The Demand Curve

In economics, there is a principle called the demand curve. It is defined as a consumer’s willingness to pay for goods is directly related to the utility derived from consumption of the unit. Basically, the more someone wants something because of its value or use, the higher the price they are willing to pay for it. 

In the retail security world, the price someone is willing to pay for an item may not be just monetary. If an item is deemed valuable enough, or needed enough, some people will go to any lengths to obtain it.

 That can include any number of ways to get it on sale, or at a discount from coupons.  I have seen people damage items to get a reduction in price. I have also seen my share of fraud, and of course theft.

Use Your Powers For Good Instead of Evil

There are no standard rules of engagement when it comes to retail theft prevention. Sure, there are things that are illegal and unethical that you need to stay away from. How far are you willing to trust someone?

When you hire an employee for your company, there is always a certain amount of apprehension involved. You want to make sure that this person is honest and hardworking. You want to know that they are going to make you proud and satisfied that you made a good hiring decision. The last thing you want is to hire someone who turns out to be completely different from the person they presented themselves as during the interview.

Whenever you are ready

I say, “whenever you are ready” to my toddler, a lot. It is probably more sarcastic than it should be, but sometimes it helps me put things back into perspective. It helps me to remember that when I am dealing with her, I am on her time frame, not mine. It is one of the few times that I feel challenged to slow down, not to speed up.

In my professional life, “whenever you are ready” is more like “it should have been done 10 minutes ago”. I put this same urgency into clothing security. In my years of working in loss prevention I have seen some ridiculous misuses of company resources.  Most of the time it involves company employees pulling dangerous or inane stunts with equipment that they think is funny.  I have seen people driving scissor lifts through coffee shop drive-thrus and riding pallet jacks like skateboards.  While such things fall within our realm of responsibility as liability issues they are actually not the worse misuse of equipment we can come across.

I am speaking specifically about incorrect or improper application of retail anti theft devices.  Just the other day I came across fifty dollar sneakers in a store with Spider Wraps sealing the boxes.  Now I understand some stores have issues with footwear theft and are looking to prevent shoplifting but Spider Wrapping boxes is somewhat extreme, rather time-consuming, and creates a hassle for when someone wants to try on or buy said shoes.

Let’s Take A Look Inside That Bag

My most recent case of employee theft came about as a policy violation. I had a floating manager go lend a hand in one of my stores a few weeks ago. The Store’s manager, I guess, had forgotten that she was going to be there. As soon as she walked in the door, the SM suddenly realized that she had forgot to have someone ring up a pack of gum that she had clearly chewed most of.

While that didn’t seem like a huge red flag at the time, after my SM had left for the day, my visiting manger noticed that an employee was snacking up at the front registers. When asked, the employee said that they always do this and then whenever the SM has a chance, she comes by and rings them up.

By now, my visiting manger was starting to suspect that the door for employee theft was wide open. They called me to let me know that some things were not adding up.

The last clue came later on that night when they started taking the trash out. The store employees were putting everything into black, opaque trash bags instead of clear ones. Upon asking why they were being used, the employees said that it was what the SM used, so they did too.

It was clear that an employee theft investigation needed to begin. We were right too. The SM and a few other employees were all stealing. While we never did figure out how much was actually taken out of the store in those trash bags, we do know that it won’t happen again.
