Un- Stuff Your Boxes

Recently I have been seeing a rash of box stuffers in my stores. They have been a little hard to apprehend because they are working in groups of several people.

Basically one or two of them walk into the store and head straight to our outdoor department. We sell a big cardboard box of merchandise for about $30 dollars retail. They take it across the store to where we sell some electronics. They leave the box there and then leave the store.

We then see a completely different person (or two) come in and take the product out of the box. One stands guard, while the other fills the box with electronics. After taping the box back up, they leave it back in the outdoor department.

A third person/ group comes in, picks up the box, and then tries to pay the $30 dollars for the hundreds of dollars worth of electronics hidden inside.

When you are trying to prevent shoplifting, that’s a hard scenario to beat. Because no one person follows through on all of the typical steps needed to make an apprehension, it has been tough trying to put them out of commission.

There is no retail anti theft devices on the box, but we have started to use the Spider Wraps to help compensate. Because we know what electronics they are taking, we have been Spider Wrapping those items.

So far the Spider Wrap seems to be a pretty good deterrent, as we are starting to see a reduction in the groups activity in our stores.

Why sell yourself short

One of the fundamentals of consumer choice is that one product can easily be substituted in for another one. There is always a choice of products to choose from at competing or comparable price points.

You know that your customers have a choice to come in and shop at your store, so why would you sell yourself short by giving them a reason to shop elsewhere. You want the right products in at the right time for the right price.

Why would you not want the same choices when it comes to your own purchases? When you decide to invest in retail security, make the best choices and get the most for your money.

Don’t sell yourself short and get inferior anti theft devices because that’s all you think you can afford.

Get cheap labels and cheap tags that are worth something. Anti shoplifting tools are diverse in quality and content. Use your power of choice and get the ones that are worth your time, money and effort. You wouldn’t sell your customers an inferior product, so don’t buy one yourself.

It’s not what you know; it’s what you can prove

It can be very exciting to uncover a case of employee theft. For some, it can be so exciting that logic and common sense can be replaced by a case of tunnel vision.

Let me give you an example…

Back in the day, I had a cash register with a hundred dollar shortage. It was pretty uncommon to be short more than five dollars in a day. We didn’t even bother keeping an over/ short tracking log for less than five dollars just for that reason. So when I saw a hundred dollar shortage, my heart sank.

My heart sank at such a huge loss, and then I took a breath and decided it must have just been an error and I could find it with a little research.

So off I went to disprove this as an employee theft case. It didn’t take me long to realize how wrong I was. The first cash transaction showed a very clear case of employee theft, at least that’s what I thought.

The employee rang up a low dollar transaction for a customer. He handed her a hundred dollar bill. She tendered the transaction, and handed him his change and very clearly, the hundred-dollar bill back.

When I went to my manager to open up an employee theft investigation, I was shocked that she didn’t want to interview right away. The video was so clear and we had suffered a big loss.

I needed to take a step back and realize that even though the employee had incurred a loss, it didn’t mean that she was intentionally stealing. That was the difference. If we couldn’t prove that intent, we had no case of employee theft.

I watched her like a hawk for months. Not even a single penny short. Maybe she did give intend to give that hundred back, or maybe she just had a bad moment. Either way, we could never prove it was a case of employee theft.

Open for the summer season

Opening up the pools for Memorial Day weekend is one of my most looked forward to moments to kick off the summer swim season. If you have had crazy nice weather like I have out here, then some of the pools may have opened early.

Some states have regulations that control the hours of availability by requiring lifeguards to be present at all times. In those states, it is hard to have an early opening, as the additional payroll required usually hasn’t been accounted for.

Whether or not the pools are open doesn’t mean you want your beach and swim clothes open for business for shoplifters. Anti theft devices are designed to help deter and combat shoplifting attempts in your stores.

Clothing security on these easily concealable items helps to eliminate the scope of risk allotted to these items due to theft. It is widely known in the retail industry that shoplifters will target stores and merchandise that does not have anti theft devices present.

Are your companies priorities straight where bottle security is concerned?

While previously working as an agent, my location was seeing increased shrinkage from theft in our liquor department and needed to tackle the issue of liquor bottle security. The store I was working in was one of many locations for a national corporation and based on shortage and locality we had been classified as a “low-exposure” store. Consequently, merchandise protection strategies such as the EASy Bottle bottle locks were not available to our location, which were reserved for “high-exposure” stores.

Due to the absence of a bottle lock, bottle security incidents were occurring daily. One subject regularly came into the store on her lunch break to drink a couple of bottles of high-priced wine before returning to work. A group began targeting Hennessy liquor, which disappeared off the shelves and into their pant legs and jackets. My team dedicated our efforts to reducing this loss even if the company wasn’t providing us with solutions from Alpha security. We performed perpetual inventory of “hot” liquor items twice a day and spent the majority of our shifts monitoring the aisle via CCTV.

Our efforts resulted in the reduction of theft in the liquor department, but other departments were now seeing an increase. There just weren’t enough agents to dedicate their shifts to sitting in front of monitors and staring at the cameras of high theft areas. I believe our bottle security dilemma could have been avoided had the company been willing to provide all of its stores with EASy Bottle bottle locks from Alpha Security. Whether a store is able to have a security team on its payroll or not, a bottle lock prevents the item from being opened before they are removed at the point of sale. With this peace of mind, store personnel can keep their merchandise on an open display without worrying about liquor bottle security.

Is Your Retail Security Up To Par?

Ever since the downfall of the economy I have noticed a spike in thefts from the retail establishment where I am a loss prevention officer. Retail security has become a major focus now because of this. During meetings my manager and I stress the importance of not only customer service, but utilizing anti-shoplifting tactics and anti-theft devices in order to make sure the only merchandise leaving store is paid for.

Two examples of anti-theft devices which are inexpensive are cheap tags and cheap labels. Cheap tags come in all different forms to fit the needs of your business and simply clip onto merchandise to act as a visual deterrent. Cheap labels compliment the anti-theft devices by providing further warning to the would-be thief. If a tag is placed incorrectly where it is not visible, the label stating that that particular item is protected will help in scaring off shoplifters.

By making sure your retail security habits and anti-shoplifting mindset are a top priority, you will have a better night sleep the night before inventory.

Anti-Theft Devices: Well Worth the Investment

Would you rather see your clothes leave the store paid for or unpaid for? Clothing security is an essential component to maximizing profits and minimizing loss. Some store managers are scared off at the idea of spending money on little plastic clips that may damage clothes. That is a huge misconception. Anti-theft devices are inexpensive, will not damage merchandise, and have an enormous return on investment.

I have been doing loss prevention now for five years and I can tell you that thieves tend to stay away from merchandise that is protected. Cheap tags come in all different sizes and types to fit the needs of your business. Cheap labels can also be purchased to add further visual deterrence by providing warning to potential shoplifters.

Buying cheap tags, cheap labels, or other anti-theft devices will be 100% beneficial to your store’s clothing security.

The devil is in the accessories

I have a friend who is an absolute clothes horse. She loves to shop, she loves to buy, and she loves to accessorize. It’s a good thing that she also works in a retail environment where she gets to sell clothes every day.

I was talking to her recently when she confided that they were having an issue with their accessories department. They keep finding empty packages, but they aren’t sure what to do about it. They never seem to see anyone suspicious lurking about.

I asked what type of clothing security they have in place. She said they have the standard anti theft devices on all of their clothes. When I asked about the accessories, she paused, and realized there wasn’t any in place.

I told her, one of the easiest things to do was to make it as obvious as possible that there was some sort of clothing security, even if it was just a camera. I also told her this would be a great area to use some cheap tags and cheap labels to drive the point home.

Be Prepared

The boy scouts have a long-standing motto to always be prepared. For all of you ex boy scouts out there, I am sure that you have often incorporated this into your adult lives. When you look into retail theft prevention, the motto applies here, as well.

There are some very well prepared, well-organized criminals out there. They operate in organized crime rings. These rings can be anywhere from a few people to sometimes hundreds of people working in various capacities in the chain. There can be ties to mafia or even foreign terrorists being funded through these criminal activities.

While it may seem that when you are faced with protecting yourself against a highly sophisticated, and often well-funded venture, there may not feel like there is much that you can do to compete with them.

It is actually the contrary. Successful anti shoplifting techniques comes from the very basic principles of retail theft prevention.

At the very forefront is to be prepared. Utilize anti shoplifting devices like a Checkpoint security system.

A Checkpoint security system may include everything from hard tags and soft EAS labels, to digital recording devices, a camera system, and monitors.

You can bet that anyone looking to score will be watching to see who has a protective system in place, and more importantly, who does not. Take a guess as to which store they will make their new target.
