Where is security when you need it?

All to often we ask the question after an incident has occurred, that should have been asked well in advance. It wouldn’t be the first time in my career that some incident happened, and the proper preventative measures were not in place.

We race around like crazy people trying to figure out what happened, and where the breakdown occurred. Along the way, people inevitably start to point fingers about whose responsibility it is, and who should have done what.

It can easily get very ugly, very fast.

An extra set of eyes and ears

Not so sneaky

I had a shoplifter the other day that did not think things through very clearly. While shoplifting, in general, is not the smartest move in the world, some shoplifters at least try to come up with a smart plan to get out the door undetected.

This woman had picked up a pair of jeans and then went into the fitting room to try them on. She was very nervous and jumpy every time the employees tried to assist her. She was in the fitting room for an awfully long time to try on just one pair of jeans.

Well, the next thing we know, this woman is walking towards the door. While we could not see any tags, we did notice the clothing security anti theft device still attached to the bottom of the jeans she was wearing. We also saw her old pair of jeans rolled up and stuffed (mostly) into her bag.

It was quite clear that the clothes she was wearing belonged to us. It was not a very sneaky attempt at shoplifting and she was quickly apprehended.

Adding insult to injury

When a thief steals merchandise from a retail establishment, it is called shoplifting. When the shoplifters try to return the stolen product for store credit, it is call an insult. The shoplifters are brazen enough to walk back into your store and place your inventory on the refund desk and expect that you give them money/ credit for those items.

Retail security needs to stop the problem before it comes back in your face. The losses happen at the point of the theft, not the refund. Therefore, the activity needs to be stopped at the point of theft.

Anti theft devices are one of the first and best lines of defense in anti shoplifting. Using cheap tags and cheap labels helps deter shoplifters before they even get out the door.

If for some reason you do have shoplifters coming back with stolen product. Get as much information as you can. Ask for a valid picture ID, and note any vehicle make and model and plate numbers, if you can obtain them safely.

Do the hustle

I have a lot of hardworking, good people that are employed in my stores. There are quite a few of them that continually o above and beyond for whatever the jobs, or the managers need. Because of that sort of loyalty, it really burns me up to see outside “customers” take advantage of them.

We have a great lady who helps our clothing security stay up to date by doing spot checks on our anti theft devices, and greets customers at the door as they come and go.

Well a man was walking with a cane and trying to push his shopping cart out the door. As soon as he walked in front of her, he tips the cart over and falls on the ground.

Being the good person she is, she immediately went to help him up and make sure he was ok. Well, as she bent down to offer a helping hand, another male ran out the door setting the alarm off with his arms piled high with clothes.

It didn’t take long for the man to get back up after that. When we reviewed the footage from the parking lot, we saw that the two were connected. Luckily we passed the surveillance off to our other stores and the pair was apprehended trying the same hustle as before.

Better than the rest

There is resurgence in the United States for products to be made in the USA. I have very distinct memories of television ads back in the 80’s talking about how proud the company was to be making their product right here. There was even a tag – red, white, and blue- that you could find in clothes that said, “ Made in the USA”.

I guess it has circled back around that we are looking for products to be made here. And why not? We know what we want out of a product, and we know what the quality of an item should really be. One of the downsides to having foreign made items is that they don’t always produce top of the line products because they will never have to use them.

Statistically, they do not come from the top

I have spent many years working with cases of employee dishonesty, theft and fraud. Statistically, the majority of those employees were working in a non-management capacity. It was always a big deal if the case implicated an actual member of management.

Part of the commotion was that managers are expected to operate with a different level of trust and professionalism. That’s why they are mangers to begin with. The other part is because it really is a much smaller percentage of managers who are actually committing theft and fraud.

That being said, I see so much more emphasis placed on running background checks and drug tests for management positions. That could be from either in house promotions, or external hires.

To me, anyway, it seems almost like it is counter productive to run those background checks while ignoring a much larger issue. There is a lack of complete background checks run for non-management employees.

There might be arguments about the additional costs incurred by running checks on everyone. I would place the counter argument that the dollars lost from even a single case of employee dishonesty can be massive.

I have seen employee theft cases reach into thousands of dollars, some even tens of thousands. How many background checks need to be run before that total reaches tens of thousands of dollars?

Run a consistent check for all employees. Keep the bad ones out before they are even considered for management.

Make it a memorable one

Well another three day holiday weekend is almost here. I am already getting the 4th of July weekend ads littering up my mailbox, both snail mail, and e-mail, by the way.

My friends and neighbors are starting to plan their backyard BBQs and outings in the park and at the water. They are also making lists of all the things they will need to go out an buy before the big weekend gets here.

After working in retail for many years, I know that all of my plans and shopping need to be done by that Wed. at the latest. You couldn’t pay me enough to have to run to a grocery or liquor store during the actual weekend. If we run out, sorry guys, we are out.

Now, I know that puts me in a minority because so many people do run out for those last minute oversights, or a beer run. That’s where it can get tricky for liquor bottle security to be effective if it isn’t planned out in advance.
