The Time in NOW!

Now more than ever before, retail security is an integral part of any store’s day to day processes. The economy is at a stand still. Unemployment rates are still high in most of the country. More people are turning to theft as a way to supplement their income, or in some cases even providing much needed basics like food and clothing.

Some of the most basic anti-theft devices are EAS tags and labels. There are cheap tags and cheap labels out there to help supply even the most budget stretched retailers with effective and inexpensive Retail Security devices.

By adding these tags or labels into the SOP of your day-to-day business, shrink and other associated losses will start to diminish. You simply adhere or pin the devices on to whatever your high shrink merchandise is. You have an instant deterrent against theft.

You might even see an increase in your employees’ engagement levels. The more you can do to show you care, the more your employees and, in turn, your customers will respond with positive results. Remember, just because retail theft is out there, doesn’t mean you have to be a victim. You can take the power to control your profits into your own hands.

Silver lining, not foil lining

For every bad or unfortunate situation, they say there is a silver lining. It’s just a matter of having to look hard enough. In clothing security, it is almost a literal truth. The silver lining we look for is an aluminum foil lining in shoplifter’s clothes or bags.

The purpose of using a foil lining is to try and prevent the anti theft devices on clothes from activating as a shoplifter passes through the EAS towers positioned at the exit doors. The shoplifter can slip out without the audible alarm drawing attention to them, if the EAS alarms do not register the anti theft devices.

Most states do have some sort of laws against the use of shoplifting tools like bolster bags and foil linings. The problem is that in order to enforce this type of law, the perpetrators need to be caught.

That generally happens only after they have been apprehended for shoplifting. It will trump up their offenses upon arrest, but understand that it is not a proactive piece of legislation.

The glue that binds

Retail theft prevention really came into its own the day Checkpoint security systems came into being. A full Checkpoint system can encompass a very wide range of products and resources to stop shoplifting. One of the biggest components is the Checkpoint label and Checkpoint security tag.

The Checkpoint security tags and the Checkpoint labels are the glue that really keeps the entire Checkpoint security system pulled together.

Think of it this way. How good are cameras if no one is there to watch them? They are probably not very efficient.

I remember an incident where I was explaining to someone why an outdoor camera panning the parking lot could not zoom in on a license plate, when they thought that the cameras were supposed to have that capability. I had to explain that the camera could do that if someone was watching it. We were reviewing video, and could not change what had already been recorded.

What about EAS towers? Do they magically close down around a shoplifter trapping them inside until the police arrive? No. That would just be silly.

Checkpoint labels and Checkpoint security tags do stop shoplifting even when no one else is around. Most shoplifters will by pass an EAS tag or label if it is already on the merchandise they are trying to steal. No other Checkpoint system component can do that on its own.

Reference Checking, it does still happen.

A few years ago I was applying for a job. It was a pretty standard application, name, education, work history, references. Nothing really seemed out of the ordinary. After a pre screening phone interview, I was called in for a face-to-face interview. A few hours after I left, I received a phone call form one of my previous supervisors. She was calling to give me an update on the glowing reference she had just given me.

Now, I always let my references know that they have been put down on an application. This was the first time (ever) that any one actually had taken the time to call my references. Since I have been out in the work force for almost two decades, it caught me off guard.

I started to think about how much information a potential employer misses out on by not running comprehensive and diverse pre employment screening.

If companies or employers are not taking the time to call a reference, are they taking the time to really dig down into a background check to find out all they can in regards to a potential new hire?

Pre employment screening is a way to drill down deeper into the lives of your applicant pool. If there is anything suspicious to report, an applicant is probably well versed in how to hide it. They are already anticipating leading questions in an interview and will d their best to deflect the question.

Background checks will filter out the deflections and reveal anything that may be a cause for concern.

Everyone should use Liquor Bottle Security

I went into my local drug store today to get a few quick things, and it turned out to be a not very quick trip after all. Because I rarely go into the store, I was unfamiliar with the layout. I spent way to long walking up and down the aisles looking for what I needed.

Eventually, I did find the right aisle, and made it on my merry way. While I was lost, I did stumble across a very small section of liquor. It was located at the far end of the store, and was barely a four-foot bay’s worth of product. I had to wonder if it was really even worth it to be there.

I did notice, however, that they did not use any liquor bottle security. Ugh. I had to shake my head as I walked past. I couldn’t help thinking about what a recipe for disaster this store had conjured up.

Back corner of the store, no visible employees, no liquor bottle security, hmm, it wouldn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what would happen next.

It really was quite a shame to see. There was plenty of space on the shelf for the bottles to have a bottle lock. Because there were so few bottles, they would really only need a few bottle locks to guard the entire section of inventory.

I’ll bet they would spend less to have the bottle lock than what they will lose on one stolen bottle. Talk about a return on investment.

Opening Weekend

If it didn’t feel like summer was here before, it sure does now. Memorial Day weekend is the traditional kick off weekend for the pool season. From community pools to apartments, and public water attractions, this is the weekend we have all been waiting for to begin the swim season.

Retailers, I am sure, felt the surge of swimsuit sales over the last week. Most loss prevention employees felt the surge of swimsuit theft attempts. Clothing security narrows in on micro seasons like swim and beach season. Clothing security tags make their appearance to help protect this transitional inventory.

Clothing security is not just limited to swimsuits though. Any type of beach and water attire seems to fly out the doors. It includes anything from shoe switches (with both incoming flip flops and outgoing), to accessories like sun hats and sunglasses. Don’t forget that if you cross merchandise any sort of sun protection (lotions, oils aloe, etc,) that they can also be easily concealed in a beach bag headed out the door.

If you are unsure of what is going on in your store, keep an eye on your clothing alarms. They will be a good indicator of who is taking product out that they haven’t paid for. Watch for hurried movements, and arms tight against the body to point you in the right direction.

Visit the Loss Prevention Store to purchase a clothing alarm or clothing security tags and an Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system.

Walking the Hard Line in Hardware

This is an extremely busy time for home improvement and hardware stores. With the beautiful weather, people are anxious to get their spring-cleaning and spring to do lists underway.

There is nothing better, especially as a home owner, than to be able to throw open all the windows, open a can of paint and redo the hideous looking walls that have been staring at you all winter long.

It’s also nice to be able to head outside and start work on the garden, the lawn and out in the makeshift –garage- wood- working shops to work on whatever project takes hold of your creativity.

The down side to all of this hard work and renewal is that tools are a hugely popular theft item.

Spider wraps seem to be a reliable deterrent, which is a good thing. Before I worked in loss prevention for a hardware store, I had no idea the scope of a stolen tool. Believe me, its actually pretty lucrative.

Tools end up in pawnshops and e-bay being sold as new in box sales. They are also big on being sold at construction sites. Did you know that most contractors/ construction workers have to supply their own tools? There are plenty out there that are willing to pay less than retail with no questions asked.

As a result, retail anti theft devices have to go beyond just a soft tag. Spider Wraps seem to fit the bill. A little more complex, they are harder to defeat. I have seen just how effective a Spider Wrap on a tool is in preventing shoplifting.

Get your piece of the pie

It seems like everyone has his or her own version of products these days. Every name brand has a store brand counterpart. Every one wants a piece of the pie.

Well, up until recently, it seems like if you wanted an item, or system, you had to pick who you wanted to go with, there was no intermingling of products.

If you got an air freshener, for example, you could only buy that particular brand’s refills. Well it seems like people are starting to wizen up. Now I am seeing air fresheners marketing that their brand is compatible with other maker’s fresheners and refills.

Anti theft devices are the same way. Not all anti shoplifting tags can be used with other manufacturer’s products. This is not the case here. These EAS tags are compatible with the Checkpoint’s retail security systems.

No more worrying about having to get a completely different system just to have access to cheap tags and cheap labels. You can get your piece of the pie and combine the systems into one effective solution for your store.

Run the reports

Unlike the immediacy of watching your high shrink merchandise walking out with a shoplifter, employee theft investigations take time. You might be able to see them take some product, or conduct a fraudulent refund on live surveillance, but that is only the beginning.

The true exposure or scope of employee theft investigations is generally revealed through detailed exception based and statistical reporting. I have had many conversations regarding the importance, or the usefulness of such reports.

On one hand, reports should be the road map that leads you from point to point in an employee theft investigation. It might lead you to additional refunds or pass offs of merchandise. The reports may also show you if other employees or outside parties are involved in the employee theft.

The flip side is that if you truly have a pulse on your store and your inventory, there should not be any surprises when you run your reports. If the employee theft targeted a specific item, there should not be any surprise that this item is on a high shrink list.

Statistical reports like excessive refunds, or inventory losses should reiterate the findings of your employee theft investigation. They should tell you that there are certain areas of concern and employee theft is the likely culprit. Sudden spikes in the losses from certain product groups are good examples.

While it very well could turn into an example of which came first the chicken or the egg, reports will ultimately enhance and solidify any employee theft investigation.
