You down with OOP?

OOP, or Out of Package items can create unnecessary work and margin loss to items that often don’t have a huge mark up to begin with. Clothes that come in packages, like socks or dress shirts, are common out of package items.

All too often I go into stores and see rounders full of shirts haphazardly thrown onto available hangers, marked at an additional discount. Socks are even worse. Someone has to take the time to hang tag them together, hope it stays, and then put out on the same hooks as the nicely packaged ones.

Most of the time OOP occur because a customer wants to try an item on for fit, or feel the quality of the clothes. Less frequently, but still a problem are those that open a package to take out one of the components and steal it.

Maybe it is the tie that comes with the shirt, or a special accessory included on a specific packaged deal. Anti theft devices can be attached to these items prior to a theft, or they can be added afterwards to these out of package items.

Don’t end the game before you even get started

One of the training tools I have used over the years with store employees is how to handle the store’s merchandise. I don’t mean how to avoid damages and move product without hurting himself or herself, or someone else (even though those are very important also!)

What I am talking about is how to move product that has soft labels as part of a Checkpoint security system. Checkpoint labels are designed to not be a customer disservice issue. They are designed to deactivate properly at the point of sale.

I all too often see stocking employees set a stack of product down at the counters of the registers. They do not realize that the deactivator pads will deactivate all of those Checkpoint labels even though there is not a sale in progress.

All of those Checkpoint labels are worthless if they have been deactivated. If the product goes out onto the sales floor from there, then the merchandise is vulnerable to shoplifters.

It’s discouraging to think that your own employees could be thwarting your anti shoplifting tools without even realizing it. A Checkpoint security system is only as good as you allow it to be. Don’t eliminate it before it even has a chance to work properly. Train your associate to understand how to keep it running.

An ounce of prevention

My husband and I had the chance to walk through a new market store in our area over the weekend. We are trying to eat a bit healthier, so we jump at the chance to look at new grocery stores.

This one in particular does a lot with the local farmers for their produce and has locally made breads. They are a smaller venue than the traditional big box. I would think they are a step above a permanent farmers market.

One thing that did surprise me, as we walked around, was that they did sell bottles of wine. Now I know that they probably aren’t a big shrink store for alcohol, but there was not any type of bottle security to be seen.

I guess you really do have to know your market to determine whether or not you need any bottle security like bottle locks. I would be more concerned as time goes by, that you might need them down the road. More than likely, they will wait until after they have a theft problem before they feel the need to address it.

If an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, the same holds true for bottle security. A small initial investment is potentially worth more than that same investment compounded by the incurred shrink losses.

All in one

I am not a space cadet. I am generally very well organized; I have a place for everything and everything in its place. I have to do lists, task lists, calendars, organizers, email reminders, you name it, I have probably got it and used it at some point along the way.

That being said, when you work in retail, anything and everything can potentially happen along the way. In the course of going from my office, around three departments and up a set of stairs to another set of offices, I can be stopped by anywhere from three to thirty people all needing something. If I don’t write it down, in my notebook, I’ll forget, and if I loose my notebook that I did write it down in, well things can start to fall apart easily at that point.

Needless to say, I like to stay organized for the sake of my own survival. That’s why I like things that are easy to use, especially when it comes to clothing security.

Clothing security tags usually have two separate parts to them. It makes it easy to use, but also easy to loose one part of the tag. Half a tag will do nothing for your clothing security. There is a product out called the Alpha Fashion2 Accessory Tag.  It is a Checkpoint tag, lanyard and pin all in one. No parts to loose, super easy to use.

Don’t Look Back

When you watch shoplifters, you pick up on mannerisms that normal, honest shoppers don’t generally exhibit. Of course, the opposite is true that normal shoppers do things that shoplifters generally don’t.

One of those traits is that normal shoppers will pay for all of the merchandise they want. Sometimes shoplifters try to deceive you by paying for a portion of the items they have in their possession. There is usually items concealed on their person, or there are items concealed inside of something, the box they are buying, or maybe in their purse.

In almost all of the incidents of shoplifting that I have encountered in my tenure is that shoplifters will do the “look back” on their way out the door. They are watching to see if someone is following them. They are also testing the waters to see if they missed any retail anti theft devices on their hidden product.

Using a Nano Gate in the department will sound the alarm before a shoplifter gets close to an exit door. Employees can even use the Nano Gate in back areas of the store to prevent shoplifting. In cases of shoplifters setting off emergency exits, Nano Gates will sound before the 15 second timer on a fire door comes up.

Next time you see a shoplifter, watch as they look back before exiting. Watch them ditch the merchandise even faster with Nano Gates in the right areas.

When it all fits

When I was a child, I loved putting together puzzles. It started out with the small little three or four piece baby puzzles. After many years I evolved into some of the hardest puzzles I could find- the ones where all the pieces look the same and have very few distinguishing characteristics.

While it has been many years since I tried to put a puzzle together, I have moved on to different types of puzzles, the kind you find working in retail security/ loss prevention.

When I work a case, I still take the same approach I did when I worked a puzzle, start out with the easy corners and the edges. Once I get the frame built, I can then start putting the little details together to form the whole picture. Sometimes it might be an employee theft case; sometimes it might be an organized ring stealing particular items.

In all of my experiences, I know that anti theft devices has always been one of the important pieces I have used to solve the puzzle laid out before me.

Testing the waters.

One of the more complex employee theft cases I had to work on was because there wasn’t a clear-cut way to explain to the associate that they were stealing.

Usually when I conduct an employee theft interview, the employee being question is aware of their wrongdoing. They may try to justify it or completely deny it, but deep down, they know it was wrong.

We had a cosmetics department in the store. At the different counters were the testers of eye shadow, and lipsticks, and of course perfume.

It wasn’t uncommon to see an employee occasionally walk by and give a little spritz as they walked to their selling department. Sometimes they would tryout a new shade of lipstick on a break. For the most part, the employees were respectful, and made purchases of the items they tested. Since this was no different than how we would treat a customer, we stayed out of the way.

One day, an employee came to me fuming because another employee would do their full makeup every day from their testers. Then this employee would take the lipsticks and eyeliners with them.

Because the makeup had no retail value, it was a hard sell when I went to talk to this employee. I explained moderation. I explained respect for the other associates. I even explained it was employee theft of company property. Nothing.

While they no longer work for the store, to this day, I really think she still believes that it is ok to take something that doesn’t belong to her, as long as it doesn’t have a price tag.

Keep it on a leash

When you think of clothing security, you generally think about either the hard EAS tags, or the soft labels. Both are commonplace in retail.

The soft tags are generally embedded into a price label, or might be slid into the pocket of a wallet, or adhered to the brim of a ball cap.

The hard tags are a little more bulky, and are made in two parts. There is the tag and the pin, which needs to pierce the garment or accessory to attach.

Sometimes, neither of these are good anti theft device options for clothing security. Soft tags can be removed depending upon placement. Hard tags can rip and snag delicate or stretchy fabrics.

Having a third option is ideal for getting the most usage out of your cheap tags and cheap labels. A lanyard attachment can loop around these problematic pieces of merchandise.

Lanyards can keep your clothes on a leash without the risk of damage or having a defeated EAS soft tag.

One in a million

I have long said that security, whether it is retail security, liquor bottle security, or any bottle security for that matter, is there to protect and prevent against a one in a million chance of something happening. It is not there for the common, everyday occurrences. For example:

I have emergency preparedness manuals placed around one of my store in case a hurricane hits. Not very likely when the store is smack dab in the middle of the Rocky Mountains, but on a one in a million chance… You get the point.

Or, I have my stores take plants inside at night so no one comes by to steal them. I don’t get the feeling that too many people will gout of their way to steal a houseplant under cover of darkness, but we do it anyway.

Alpha Security understands this concept and they make bottle locks to protect you from those off chances of something happening, like shoplifting. They make Liquor bottle security simple to use and simple to navigate.

When bottle security is in place, it turns your risk of being targeted by a shoplifter into one of those one in a million chances that something will happen. Not using bottle security like bottle locks almost guarantees you will increase the odds and likelihood of being a target for theft.

Where does the time go?

Some shoplifters are in and out of a store in a matter of minutes. If they area repeat shoplifter in your store, it might just feel like you are trying to capture a ghost.

Then there are the others who take so long, that you almost want to go over and give them a hand stealing just so you can speed up the process of apprehending them. Those are the times that drive me nuts.

When you are at the point of watching a shoplifter talking them into actually concealing the item, there is no turning back. You have to watch to make sure you know what they are taking, and where they are putting it.

I have found that the usual hold up is the retail security anti theft devices. The shoplifter is trying to figure out what to do with it. Do they try and remove it? Should they just take the item anyway?

You can tell they really want the item, but they are debating if it is worth the risk. This is the heart of anti shoplifting methodology: using anti theft devices to deter and prevent shoplifting in your stores.

While I hate the wait, I am glad the EAS tags are doing their job.
