Employee Theft Seminars

One of the issues I like to hit hard in my employee theft seminars, employee theft workshop and our pre-employment interviewing seminar is how important the pre-employment process is in the prevention of employee theft and loss.

In a study published in the July/August 2012 issue of Inc. Magazine, 34% of employers have rejected a job candidate because of the person’s social-media activity. The study listed the top four reasons that those candidates were not hired:

  1. They posted inappropriate photos or information.
  2. There was evidence of drinking or drug use.
  3. They had poor communication skills.
  4. They bad mouthed a previous employer.

As employers we must use every means legally allowed to obtain information on a job candidate’s suitability for our company. Some may see this as an “invasion of their privacy” or a violation or their “rights”. Nothing is further from the truth. If someone puts information about themselves or their conduct out in the public domain, it is fair for an employer to use that information in our decisions. This is no different than a candidate’s criminal, civil, credit or education information.

A thorough look into the candidate’s background will save you from disappointment after they are hired. Do not be afraid to use every source at your disposal.

Smoke and Mirrors

My teenage son and I went to our favorite BBQ joint for lunch. As we were walking in, he noticed the sign that had their slogan on it “All smoke and no mirrors”. He was a bit confused and couldn’t figure out why someone would cook BBQ with a mirror.

I realized that he had grown up in the convincingly “real” world of computer animation and digital effects. He had no clue that magicians used smoke and mirrors to create the illusions for them to pull off their magic tricks.

The last thing you want in your retail security is for the thieves to think your anti theft devices are all smoke and mirrors. Many stores used to have dummy domes and cameras to give the illusion of retail security.

That only works for so long. Once the word gets out that they are just fakes, the shrink losses start to increase. Better to spend your time and energy with the real thing from the start. If you are using cheap tags and cheap labels, get the ones that are reliable and work properly every time.

The constant alarm

Does your clothing alarm go off constantly? Your employees are probably so numb to the sound that they don’t even realize that it is going off. Even worse, they may hear it and completely disregard it, telling everyone around them that it is broken. Either way, those actions can wreak havoc on your clothing security.

For starters, most false alarms are not because of a broken tower or pedestal. More than likely there is a tag in the area, or clothes that are too close to the sensors with anti theft devices on it.

Another option is that you are using cheap tags and labels that are foreign made imitations. They may not always be reliable. Soft tags can reactivate if they are not of good quality. Did you ever think that if one of your employees purchases your clothes that have these cheap labels sewn in, that as they wear the item, they may be setting off an alarm? How embarrassing for both you and for them.

If you are using reliable cheap tags and cheap labels, you can at least throw out that as a list of reasons why your alarm might go off.

What can we do?

When you want to stop shoplifting in your stores, the easiest thing to do is to start using anti theft devices for retail security. They will help deter a large majority of people who would consider shoplifting. If it is no longer easy to do, this percentage will simply stop and go somewhere else that is an easy target.

Unfortunately, that leaves you with a different element of shoplifter, ones that are a little bit more seasoned, or desperate. Either way, anti theft devices are not going to dissuade them from stealing your goods.

These are the people who must be caught in order for them to stop. You have the right to detain a shoplifter. You have a right to recover your merchandise and prevent a loss.

You cannot just stop anyone because you felt like it, or you think they did something. You need to be sure. You need to know exactly which item they have, and where they concealed or hid it on their person.

You also need to either call local law enforcement or let them go within a timely manner (think less than an hour). Check your local jurisdiction for exact information.

Your brand merchandise strategy

Everyone in the retail industry has a brand. It is how you and your stores look, think, act and convey you to the consumer. Billions of dollars are spent on company branding every year. These brands transcend beyond the company logo, right down to the very detail of displays of clothes and other accessories.

Clothing security should be just as much of an integral part of your company’s brand strategy. Your brand should show how to use anti theft devices and where they will be put on the products.

Your brand should also place emphasis on the fact that you do use anti theft devices to reduce your shrink. You can easily put up a sign on the doors or near fitting rooms that you electronically monitor your merchandise.

The placement of your devices can also play a role in letting your customers know that you are reducing your shrink risk through EAS. You can place these tags as prominently as you like or as discreetly as you want based on your marketing and brand strategy.

“How do you stop shoplifting?”

It is a simple question “How do you stop shoplifting?” Unfortunately there isn’t always a simple answer. It all depends on your product, your store, and your employees and of course your use of a Checkpoint Security System.

So what type of product do you carry? More importantly, what type of product are you loosing? Retail theft prevention revolves around matching specific products or items with specific anti shoplifting solutions. Inventory losses in accessories will need a different fix than inventory losses in power tools or electronics.

You can set your store up to enhance your anti shoplifting techniques. For example, move high ticket or high theft items farther from the doors. You can keep these same items closer to where you employees will be, like at a service counter, or wrap stand.

Your employees need to be versed on your company’s policy of how to stop shoplifting. Retail theft prevention isn’t all about apprehending a shoplifter. Nothing is more effective than your employees giving great customer service.

Of course your Checkpoint Security System should at a very minimum employ the use of EAS tags and labels. Adding in cameras and public view monitors enhance the effectiveness of the overall presentation. Just keep in mind that cameras don’t catch crooks, they only deter them.

Promote from within

I recently went on a job interview with a company that was trying to hire me for a loss prevention position. They said right from the beginning that they knew I was overqualified for the position they were offering me.

Even though they had the next level position open, they wanted me at a step down. The reason was that they like to promote from within. It was very rare that they would hire external candidates for upper level positions.

In a lot of ways, that is a very smart business move. To promote from within gives several advantages over hiring from the outside. Even with pre employment screening, some things you can’t always track, like work ethic.

Being able to watch and experience first hand how an employee responds to situations will never show up on a pre employment screening. This knowledge can help determine if a promotion is warranted based on the first hand knowledge of their skill sets.

Promoting from within is also a great motivator for your existing employees as they feel that advancement opportunities are attainable.

When a company does promote from inside its ranks, take care in conducting further employee background checks.

Just because an employee passed all of their pre employment screenings, doesn’t mean an employee background check can’t still be advantageous.

This new employee background check can screen for any negative events that may have happened since their start date. It is also a chance to screen for things that may not have been needed before. Think about if the promotion will give the employee access to restricted files, cash or other assets, or even a new set of potentially liable situations.

Trouble in Washington

Well it seems like the initial rejoice is over. Washington State recently passed legislation allowing the private sector to sell liquor and alcohol. While this deregulation of sorts was initially met with a overwhelming approval, there is a new grass roots buzz going on.

It seems like the prices are no longer as low as what they used to be. The talk is that it’s the high price of liquor taxes driving the price up. It also seems like there is a reduction of inventory variety as the private sector is unwilling to stock the same multitude of brands found in the state run agencies.

So now there are fewer off- brands, leaving consumes with only the name brands, which were more expensive to begin with. Compound that price by adding huge taxes and the result is a major blow to the everyday man’s budget.

This is where Alpha Security’s line of EASy Bottle Bottle Locks can be implemented for liquor bottle security.

Anytime you incur a drastic price increase to a highly consumable and highly desirable item, theft will start filling in the gaps.

Liquor bottle security needs to be in place to prevent this sort of redistribution of wealth, if you will. A simple bottle lock will keep your goods on the shelf until the actual consumer makes their purchase.

Visit the Loss Prevention Store to purchase EASy Bottle bottle locks by Alpha Security and your Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system.

Glad they were there

A woman came into the store with a baby stroller over the weekend. While she didn’t do anything right away that caught my attention, I had a gut feeling that I needed to watch her.

It wasn’t long before I realized that my suspicions were right. As she was walking around the men’s department, she started to run her hands down the legs of some pants. As soon as found the clothing security tags, she moved on to the next pair. Because she never looked for a specific size of pants, I knew something was a bit fishy.

She continued on this way around the department, until she found a shirt that did not have any clothing security tags. Down she went, and a split second later the shirt was shoved under the basket of the stroller.

She hid the shirt so fast, that if you had not been already watching, you never would have noticed a thing. She went through the rest of the men’s department and then on towards the women’s section.

Sure enough, she followed the same process of looking for security tags on clothes. Two more shirts and a pair of sunglasses later she was out walking through the doors, knowing that she would not set off a clothing alarm with her choices.

We were there to make the apprehension, much to her surprise. Had it not been for the security tags on clothes that she had to sort through, I might not have spotted her.

Prevent Shoplifting – Crazy Reasons Given By Shoplifters

Over the years I have run into some pretty weird situations with shoplifters. In a company’s effort to prevent shoplifting we must apprehend the thieves that are stealing. In one situation I apprehended a guy who had stolen a framed picture of Christ. He did not fight me, resist, run or anything else that we are always prepared to deal with. But when the Police arrived at the store and we were switching handcuffs on the shoplifter he turned to me and said, “This is not a very Christian thing you are doing to me”. This guy STEALS a picture of Christ and I am the sinner!

Another time I stopped and detained a middle aged woman for shoplifting about $300 worth of new tennis shoes that I had witnessed her switch tags on to a lower priced shoe. She had a pretty heavy Eastern European accent. Again while police officers were taking her into custody she stated that I was discriminating against her because she was European. The police officers taking her into custody, whom I knew very well started laughing. She looked at them with shock when they told her. “Lady this store is owned by a French company and he (pointing to me) is married to German citizen (I met my clearly better half when I was in the Army stationed in Germany). They then reminded her that she had the right to remain silent and that they would prefer that she exercise that right.

Another all-time favorite is the guy who stole a $1.00 fishing lure from a sporting goods store. That was all he took! I stopped him and took him into custody. When I got him back to the Security Office I emptied his pockets (he was handcuffed) and was bagging it up for the police when I discovered a “wad” of cash well over one hundred dollars. I was shocked (still naïve then) and asked him why he stole a minor $1.00 item when he clearly had the cash to pay for it. He said, “I wanted to see if I could get away with it”. I just shook my head and told him that it was good that he had the cash on him, as he would need it for bail.

I have found over the years that you can prevent shoplifting and be entertained at the same time. My Loss Prevention Seminars and Loss Prevention Workshops explore there and many other situations.
