A day in the life

I would like to take a moment to imagine what life would be like if I were a Checkpoint security tag. Yes, it does seem rather silly. I like to view things from outside perspectives to be able to really get a feel for what retail theft prevention is working in my stores. What better way than through the eyes of a Checkpoint security tag.

Lets start at the beginning. As a Checkpoint security tag, my primary function is to stop shoplifting. So I need to be attached onto a piece of merchandise for that to happen. That means that I am either waiting in my stockroom, or I am in a bin at the cash registers waiting to be reused.

Next I need to be fitted onto the product. It is pretty easy. Stick the pin through the item and push the hard UFO looking piece on the pin. Done! That took all of about two seconds to do.

Now I go to the sales floor with my product. Because I am firmly attached, I know that no matter how many times I get jiggled, handled, dropped, or shopped. I am not coming off.

I’ll stay here until the merchandise is purchased and I am detached at the registers with a simple pull.

Not to bad. Retail theft prevention to stop shoplifting in ways that the entire store can assist with and understand.

Finding the Pattern

A pattern is simply a repetition of images, sounds, or events that when put together create a whole picture. These pictures often give us answers to questions that we may not even know we need to be asking.

My daughter has been skipping her naps over the last few days. The first time she fell asleep in the car for about ten minutes, but when I tried to get her inside and up to bed, she woke right up. Later she fell asleep while I was holding her. Again, she woke up as I laid her in bed. Well after she had a restless night of sleep, I was able to identify the pattern as an ear infection.

While it would have been nice to catch it sooner, the first few clues meant nothing to me until I saw the full pattern emerge.

Employee theft cases are the same way. You look for any patterns you can find to identify previous acts, and obtain future thefts in progress.

What you don’t want is to forgo employee background checks that might identify criminal patterns prior to employment. If you have to wait to identify a pattern of theft before you can stop it, you have waited too long. You will never see the cash or the merchandise again.

An employee background check expedites the pattern finding process by taking into account their prior activities, whether they are criminal records, or spotty previous work history.

In reference to

Do you have an employee referral program? I know that several of the companies I worked for would provide a monetary incentive for employee referrals that were hired onto the company. One of the companies I worked for had a strict no advertising rule, so employee referrals made up about 90% of our staff.

This had its benefits and weaknesses. If you had an employee who turned out to be a bad seed, who had referred many of the employees, than you would generally have a mass exodus of employees when one leaves.

On the other hand, finding a diamond in the rough that happens to have several competent friends can turn into several diamonds in the rough, all because of a referral process.

Liquor bottle security should not be any different. When you have trustworthy, competent referral, why not go along with it? That is one of the best ways to really know what you are getting yourself into.

Having seen first hand the quality and ease of use that Alpha Security EASy Bottle Bottle Locks can bring to your liquor bottle security is priceless.

No more trying to chase down a diamond in the rough, simply follow the referrals to the top of the line, newest addition to your retail team: the bottle lock.

In the beginning

I got my start in retail working for a clothing store. It was simple. Clothing security seemed to be pretty cut and dried. You put security tags on clothes and watch for people trying to steal your stuff.

While I have progressed my career with more complicated situations and cases, I still have a fondness for working in basic clothing security. Checkpoint tags were, and still are a staple. Shoplifters tend to follow the basic patterns of theft.

Now don’t think that there isn’t any skill or thought required to work in clothing security. There are plenty of both. Understanding that Checkpoint tags are only as good as the people using them and monitoring them.

Simply having security tags on clothes does not prevent shoplifters from stealing.

What I liked about the job was the simplicity to just do my job. It was about case production and making sure that clothing alarms were taken seriously. It wasn’t about getting involved in three hundred other P & L statement corrections and explanations, or in overseeing human resources issues.

I am happy with where my career has taken me, but every now and again, its nice to just be an agent who is focused on shoplifting.

There is a very rewarding feeling knowing that each shoplifter you sop makes a positive contribution to the community you work in.

No More Boring Loss Prevention Seminars …Please!

I sat through a loss prevention seminar the other day for a State license I hold. It was the worst hour of that month. I wish I could get it back. This guy just droned on in a monotone voice. His subject was interesting but wow that is little good when you are trying to stay awake.

When I teach a loss prevention seminar or a loss prevention workshop I feel that it is my duty to deliver an interesting and engaging session. Of course, I have been providing training for a long time now and I know the tricks to get and keep people involved. Of course my subject matter helps. I talk about employee theft, shoplifting, vendor fraud and other interesting topics.

I like to bring the session to life with my experiences. I have investigated and put in jail over 2300 employees for theft so there are a few good stories there. Like the guy who stole watches from my employers store and then gave them to the rest of the employees as Christmas gifts, including the Manager. And he couldn’t figure out how we had caught him!

Loss prevention seminars take on a whole new aspect when you can relate these kinds of experiences to the group. Most have their own employee theft and shoplifting stories that they can relate to. Once that happens they put it together and begin to actually learn. With a loss prevention workshop we can make that happen. Of course the group has to be the right size.

No more boring loss prevention seminars, please!

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend

It is absolutely true! Diamonds are a girl’s best friend. I can’t think of a single woman out there who would not love to see a beautiful pair of diamond earrings or a diamond necklace wrapped up in a little box as a present for her.

As a retailer who has worked with high end and middle grade diamond jewelry sales, I can tell you the conundrum we face when presented with a beautiful new piece of diamond jewelry.

The first thing you want to do is make sure every employee working for you has seen the new piece and is completely in awe. That way they can talk up the sale to all of their clients.

Next you want to find a great way to merchandise and display the jewelry. That is where the problem begins. Typical retail anti theft devices might work to prevent shoplifting in other areas, but not with a classy piece of jewelry like this.

You can’t leave it unattended, so what’s a girl to do? Use the new Jewel Loks, of course.

A Jewel Lok is a locking mechanism that is designed specifically for jewelry that needs to be mindful of presentation and preventing shoplifting.

By using a Jewel Lok, you can then display the new diamond jewelry out in the open for all to see without worrying that the retail anti theft device will be bulky, or even worse, easy to defeat.

Only sometimes

For plenty of retailers, sales are driven by special buys. These deep discount, one-time purchase items drive in customer traffic to encourage shopping in other areas of the store.

Sometimes these special buys are a consumable. Sometimes, they are a one of a kind specialty item. Sometimes you need to have access to cheap tags and cheap labels to make sure your retail security is up to speed with these one-time displays of product.

Because the draw a buyer has for a special buy piece of merchandise is the extremely low cost of goods, it may not make sense for the vendor to put in extra time or money into equipping them with anti theft devices.

By not having these items EAS tagged, it can lead to more than just an inventory loss.  You can loose major sales and reputation by not having an advertised product available.

There will surely be upset customers who made the trip into the store just for that item. To send them away empty handed will actually send them away with a bad taste in their mouths for your store. They will be less likely to make a trip again for any other sales.

The truck stops here

For most of us it can be difficult to separate our work lives from our personal lives. We are spending more time at work, involved in work, checking our emails and voicemails for work, sometimes 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our families are often pushed to the side because our work can be so consuming.

It is no surprise that so many people develop relationships at work. They can be friends, or even love interests. Even in the loss prevention profession, it is not uncommon for people to meet their future spouses while on the clock.

Most companies have clear-cut policies in their handbooks regarding personal relationships and fraternizations for a couple of reasons. One is to protect everyone form harassment or favoritism in the workplace. The other is to protect against employee theft.

It is not uncommon for employee theft to take place when there are friends or relatives (significant others) working together and having access to merchandise and a register or unsupervised back door.

Not many people know that there are policies in place regarding delivery truck drivers. Most of my stocking crews know that there is a strict time limit that must be followed for how quickly a truck must be unloaded.

While they think it is about their own productivity levels, an even bigger part is to prevent employee theft.

In large cases involving store associates and drivers, there is usually documentation of the drivers lingering at those stores and developing relationships. These relationships lead to the potential and opportunity for major theft to occur.

When the trucks are pushed on as soon as possible, those relationships do not have time to form, thus cutting back on the potential for employee theft of that nature to occur.

Clothing Security, How does it look?

I’ve been in loss prevention for 10+ years so I know the purpose of having anti-theft devices on merchandise, but most of the general public think differently.  I think we’ve all been in a fitting room, trying to hide clothing security tags while looking in the mirror.  For that reason, most of my friends ask repeatedly why it’s necessary to go to such lengths to protect clothes.

As a retailer, it’s an easy choice; loose merchandise or tag it.  I’ve dealt with a variety of anti-theft devices such as Ultramax, RF, Cheap labels, Ink tags, Cheap tags, etc.  As loss prevention I want something that is going to keep clothes in the store, as a customer I want clothing security that doesn’t hinder the shopping experience.

I swear by small anti-theft devices.  They are harder for shoplifters to defeat, easier for associates to remove at point of sale and not such an eye sore.  It’s all about finding that balance between keeping your clothes secure and keeping your customers happy.

Reinforcement Theory

We all know that a shoplifter who walks into a store, steals an item, and then gets away with it will come back to do it again. I refer to it as the “stray dog” theory. If you feed a stray dog, it is bound to come back again looking to score.

The more technical terminology, or practical theory is the reinforcement theory pioneered by a man named B.F. Skinner. He states that a reinforced behavior will be repeated; a behavior that is not reinforced will not be repeated.

So to correlate to a shoplifter: a set of circumstances that results in positive consequences will equal an increase in that behavior. A shoplifter who gets away with theft will not only come back, but will do it more frequently with bigger takes each time.

So to stop a shoplifter, change the set of circumstances that created the positive reinforcement.

By adding liquor bottle security, like using Alpha Security EASy Bottle Bottle Locks, you create extinction.

The (new) existing set of circumstances with the same behavior will result in the positive consequence being withheld equaling a decrease in the frequency of the actions.

So, based on this scientific principal, if you change the shoplifter’s ability to steal successfully, he will stop coming into your store to steal.
