Thermal Images

Do you currently use a thermal printer in your store to print out bar codes, new labels, shelf tags, etc? If you do, then you are completely in luck! One of the best anti theft devices are cheap labels that work directly with your thermal printer.

These labels are blank which allows you to customize them for all of your retail security needs. These labels are soft EAS labels that can be disguised as other bar codes, price labels, even company logos. Because they work with your thermal printers, you don’t need to go out and buy another expensive piece of equipment. You also don’t need to pay someone else a premium to customize them for you.

The adhesion is pretty good too. These aren’t stickers like my daughter gets at the grocery store. These are real labels that are designed to stick to the products you want them to without running the risk of them falling off. There is also a thickness to them, so they won’t be ripped off the packages without putting up a good fight.

Stealing Hollywood Trends

Celebrities set the trends. If Nicki Minaj sings about her Michael Kors handbag and how “you” can’t afford one, her fans will be sporting the pricey bags soon after. At around $350 a pop, not everyone will be able to shell out the cash for one.

Along with handbags, Michael Kors designs watches, clothes, wallets and fashion jewelry-all at high-end prices. Knowing what brands are hot in the media world can set you a step ahead of the game. Adding anti-theft devices and paying particularly close attention to the activity occurring on the sales floor near those sought after brands can help deter theft.

Another fad-brand in the celeb world is True Religion, a high-fashion jean brand that is commonly targeted for theft. Polo has also been made famous by celebrities and is highly desired. Most brands that the rich and famous boast about are unaffordable to the average consumer and therefor more likely to pose a problem of theft.

Whether you run a big box store or a specialty boutique, it is integral to know your brands and add extra clothing security tags where needed.

Visit RBC Security Solutions for Checkpoint Compatible Clothing Security Anti-theft Devices that can help you protect your clothes and prevent retail theft in your business with products like Cheap Labels and Cheap Tags. Right then and there

Having EAS tags and labels is a very important step. It really should be the first step. These anti theft devices are visual deterrents to a shoplifter. They tend to work even better than cameras and domes. The reason is the immediacy of an EAS tag.

If a shoplifter steals an item with an active tag, the alarm will sound, and they will be noticed. If they steal something under a camera, or dome, there is no guarantee that someone is not only watching at the exact moment, but is specifically watching them.

Cameras are useful, don’t get me wrong, I have made many successful apprehensions because of them. I also had the liberty to spend my days watching cameras. Many small businesses do not have that luxury of time or payroll.

The EAS gives that immediate response to really protect your inventory from theft. It is the first step in a great retail security strategy and process. Don’t rely on a camera to do the job. Get something up front to show a shoplifter you mean business.

Booster bags are OUT! Wear-outs are IN!

The booster bag, a long-time bane of clothing security.  Since the invention of anti-theft devices there have been thieves ingenious enough to create booster bags to allow them to circumvent said security measures and make off with clothes, jewelry, small appliances, and pretty much anything else that can have a sensor or be tagged.  But it seems the booster bag is on its way out in the shoplifting community at large as fewer and fewer of these props are turning up in active investigations.  It seems that it has been supplanted by the much older tactic of wearing merchandise out of the store.

The key reason behind this change in methodology is that a lot of shoplifters, knowing of Loss Prevention surveillance protocols and tendencies, are aware of the difficulty Loss Prevention professionals face in dealing with fitting room theft.  Further, it is much easier to be inconspicuous as the first people we generally target for observation are those carrying thick bags into our stores.

With that in mind our clothing security tactics need to counter this change in methods.  Fitting rooms are the hardest places in a store to control but with enough anti-theft devices and a big enough illusion of a constant presence it might turn a few thieves away from the idea of trying to wear six bras and ten blouses underneath their over-sized hoodie.

Can you feel the beat?

Retail theft prevention involves a fair amount of auditing. It is the formal check and balance to make sure your processes are being followed through. If your processes are accurate, then you can move on to step two. Step two is deciding if your retail theft prevention is actually working.

So how do you really find the pulse of you’re anti shoplifting activity? Is there a way to determine prior to an inventory where you are shrinking, and where your shrink is decreasing?

Yes, try running counts on your inventory. If you previously lost significant quantities of item #1234, start counting item #1234 every day. Check it against your on hands and see what comes up.

If your anti shoplifting program is working, you should have accurate counts.

If the count of what you physically can find does not match what your inventory should be, then you have a problem. By tracking these daily counts, you can determine a few things.

Is the frequency that you are missing product decreasing or increasing? Are your counts off after a shipment? Is there a specific day of the week that you are coming up short?

The answers will help you narrow down not only whether your programs work, but will give you the beat on what to do next.

Think you know it all?

There are many ways to conduct an employee job interview. I have seen most of them at some point. I am even a little bit embarrassed to say that during my early days as a manager, I was guilty of conducting some pretty shoddy interviews that left me with some pretty questionable employees.

Once I started in security management, I was not oblivious to the usefulness of a stress interview. We would conduct them with cases of employee dishonesty. It went a little something like this:

There were two of us in a small room that we would turn the heat up a bit in. Yes, we knew to wear lighter clothes that day, to avoid the heat. One of us would stuff some folders with blank papers and grab some blank VCR tapes to “pad” our case files. While one of sat behind the desk, the other would pace the room, both rapidly firing out questions as we saw fit.

The result was a very quick confession, as our employee was not able to get his bearings straight. Unfortunately I know that some executives would use this same approach for job interviews, expecting a more “real” look at the candidate.

Times have progressed and with the availability of background checks, why go to this sort of trouble to hire a new employee. I saw first hand how these new hires started their jobs filled with animosity and would quickly move on to something else.

Had we simply stuck with running a background check, we may have retained those, and even better qualified candidates longer.

Do what you do

We all are programmed to multi task. If for some strange reason we are not trying to do a billion things all at once, we don’t feel like we are being productive. I have that problem when I am trying to clean my house.

I start out innocently enough. Start the laundry. Then I realize I need to wash the dishtowel so I head to the kitchen. Then I realize that if I start doing the dishes, then I can clear out a space to put the pots that need hand washing. Then I remember the water glass in the living room so off I go.

Eventually the entire house gets clean, but nothing ever is completed progressively. There is no section that is completely done and then another one started. If something comes up out of the blue, then the entire house remains unclean.

Zen wisdom teaches to do what you are doing while you are doing it. It makes sense. Really, you cannot do multiple tasks at once. You are constantly stopping and starting new tasks.

Where to start

Over the years of working in retail, I know from experience that one of the most frustrating problems to encounter is inventory loss. Specifically, it is frustrating to have unexplained inventory losses.

How embarrassing is it to try and show a customer or client a piece of merchandise you know they will absolutely love, only to discover it is missing? That is the first indicator that you may have a shoplifting problem in your store.

Unless you have previous experience with loss prevention and security, knowing how to organize your store, your inventory and most importantly, your staff to reduce shrink will be a daunting task at best.

You can spend hours coming up with solutions that may not even work. Having the knowledge that comes from a loss prevention workshop or loss prevention seminars will not only expedite your process, but will also give you more feasible solutions.

This is the opportunity you need to provide loss prevention training to your self, your management and the rest of your staff hosted by a qualified and experienced trainer.

The information that you will take away from these loss prevention workshops can help you not only identify basic shoplifting traits, but help you hone in on an actual working solution designed with your store in mind.

10 Minutes is a long time

When you think of time, you understand that a second is over in a flash. A minute, takes a little longer, but depending on what is going on in that minute, it can feel like an eternity.

10 minutes is an eternity if you are waiting for an important phone call. 10 minutes is an eternity if you are standing in line waiting to check out at a store. 10 minutes is an eternity if you are a 3 Alarm retail anti theft device screaming at the shoplifter who stole you.

That’s right a 3 Alarm tag will sound for ten full minutes before it ceases its audible alarm. Hopefully the 3 Alarm retail anti theft devices will prevent shoplifting form the get go. If for some reason it does not deter the thief, there is essentially a three-step warning to convince them otherwise.

Step one is the perimeter warning. If the tags get too close to the entry doors without being detached, an alarm will sound.

The second step in the warning system is if the product is being tampered with. If a shoplifter tries to disarm or detach the 3 Alarm products without the proper detacher, it will generate an alarm.

Finally, if the shoplifter still tries to steal the product, the 3 Alarm tag will continue to emit a siren for a full ten minutes. That should be long enough for the shoplifter to come to their senses, drop the merchandise, and let you come retrieve it.

Anti-theft devices aren’t just anti-shoplifting tools

One of the things that happen to plague most retail companies is employees “accidentally” going home with a piece of equipment in their pockets.  The items range in size and scope from pens and memo pads to pricing guns, mag-keys, and walkie-talkies.  The truth is that a lot of the time, it is simply a matter of an employee forgetting to turn in their gear at the end of their shift but what it does is creates issues when too much equipment has walked out the door leaving a handful or no usable equipment left in the store to conduct necessary business.

By managing a log of who is assigned certain pieces of equipment a store can certainly lessen the impact of these disappearing items.  But to be certain the more important pieces don’t go for a stroll you should look into attaching an anti-theft device that will sound the alarm when something crosses the threshold that shouldn’t.  A set of Cheap Labels can cover most walkie-talkie units without lessening their effectiveness.  Same goes for mag-keys (as long as they are applied to the correct side).  As for price guns a Cheap Tag attached via a loop or around a part of the handle works just fine.
