Bottle locks are nothing new in the loss prevention industry.  However they haven’t really been utilized until the last decade and since that time they have become more and more commonplace as the economy has become worse and worse.  While their primary use has been liquor stores and grocery outlets looking to stem theft there is another business type that should look into use of this bottle security method.

Bars and clubs are frequently the havens of people looking to escape the grind of everyday life.  With so many people crammed into a single building it is not hard to find incidents of theft occurring at the bar.  The most common method used by those looking to score a free bottle of liquor is having one or two people in the group distract the bartender while the rest of the group reaches over the bar and swipes one or two items within reach.

Two Sides To Every Story

Just like there are two sides to every story, there are also two sides to every EAS tag. These anti theft devices, designed to enhance your retail security, come with two separate and distinct sides.

Try It Before You Buy It

I don’t know why, but I hate fitting rooms. Even after all these years of working in retail and knowing what a pain it is to have to take back a refund, I would still rather try on clothes in the privacy of my own home.

 The downside is that I have to be very careful of which stores I shop at because some do not accept refunds, and some only give back merchandise credit on returns. If I am returning something that I didn’t like after I tried it on, I would rather not be stuck with that item.

Help Put the Shoe on the Other Foot with Anti-Theft Devices

While working as a Loss Prevention agent for a clothing retailer, our shoes were literally walking out the door…on the feet of shoplifters. Our daily routine included visits to our office by associates from the shoe department who found a box containing dirty and worn footwear that someone decided to swap out with our merchandise. We tried to watch the cameras for the shoe aisles as often as we could to try to detect if any customers were displaying indicators that revealed their intention to make off with our shoes. Alas, it turned out that there were too many footwear thieves and too little LP employees for detainments to tighten up our retail security in the shoe department.

 The loss to the department and store was so devastating that my employer realized the need to invest in anti-shoplifting tags to prevent this problem from getting the best of us. It was inside the shoes

So, one day I was walking around the store with my Loss Prevention Regional manager. Every time we went near a door, the alarm would set off. After a few alarms, I started to notice that there weren’t’ always any customers around.

 I finally looked at my regional and told her that she needed to put back whatever it was that she was stealing because she was driving up my false door alarms for the day.

 She stopped for a minute and then realized it was her shoes.

Worth their weight in gold

Don’t Employ Criminals

Employee background checks are a crucial step in the hiring process. Taking extra precautions now can prevent theft in the future. Working as an LP detective, I once received a tip from a manager that one of his associates had friends visit him and shop in the store often. It also turned out that the associate’s register consistently turned up short.

I decided to work a case on this associate. Over several weeks I watched him and built my case. One evening, his friend came to visit. They shopped around the store, selecting merchandise from his department. The friend ended up with six shirts and three jeans.

At the register, the associate rang the friend for one shirt and one pair of jeans but bagged the other seven unpaid for items. The associate walked his friend to the exit where my fellow detective was waiting.

Needless to say, we pulled both suspects into the LP office and notified the police. When they arrived, they ran the associate in their system to check for priors. The associate carried an alias which was linked to two charges of robbery. He had a bench warrant out for his arrest.

We estimated a total of $2,000 in register shortage over his six months of employment. We never obtained a cash theft admission from him, but the shortage ended after his termination.

This entire situation could have been avoided during pre-employment screening and background checks. $2,000 of cash and an unknown amount of merchandise theft would have never occurred if criminal background checks had been implemented by a background check company.

It’s not easy being green

All to often clothing security can seem like it is a waste of time, a waste of payroll, and a waste of valuable financial resources. The last thing you want is for clothing security to be a waste on the environment as well.

Have you ever had to call a customer service line to try and fix a problem? Just about everyone has at some point. I recently spent two days trying to get a hold of a company regarding a service issue on a product. Most of the time I just got a busy signal.
