Unidentified Flying Object

Anti theft devices that we used to use for the clothing security on our store’s clothes were given the nickname of UFOs. We used to call them UFOs because the shape looked like a tiny flying saucer. The larger half that was attached to the pin was a hard plastic disk with a little sphere in the middle giving it the look of some sci fi miniature.

Now there are so many different sizes and shapes that the UFO is almost a thing of the past. The traditional UFO shape, while still available, has given way to sleeker, more modern appearances in anti theft devices.

While the alarm pedestals at the doors still easily detect the tags, they are generally much smaller in size. Both the overall width and thicknesses have decreased making it much more aesthetically pleasing for the shoppers.

The smaller design also helps the customer try on clothes without the bulky tag getting in their way. This makes for one less customer complaint to arise when trying to make a sale.

How does your garden grow?

It’s kind of amazing to watch. Planting a little garden and watching it grow. All those tiny little seeds are starting to emerge from the dirt. The little sprouts growing bigger each day. It is almost addicting to watch the progression each day.

In retail theft prevention, anti shoplifting tools and tactics are like planting a little garden in your store. You start out with little seedlings of ideas and get to watch as they manifest themselves into full-blown action plans.

You might start out using just the Checkpoint labels that the vendors put on for you. As you seek out new ways to stop shoplifting, you might want to start adding those Checkpoint labels to other product that comes into your store.

When the labels turn out to be a good idea, you might start to invest in the Checkpoint security tags. The checkpoint security tags are much more visible and work excellent when you expand into soft lines products, even if it is just back to school bags, or holiday scarves.

Before you know it, what started out as simple retail theft prevention anti shoplifting tools has emerged into quite the force to stop shoplifting.

Visit the Loss Prevention Store to purchase retail anti theft devices and your Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system from Checkpoint Systems to stop shoplifting in your store.

Asking the right questions

Getting all of the answers you need to hire a legitimately qualified candidate can be difficult. Standard job applications only cover basics of position applied for, availability, and previous work and education history.

Resumes are little better, they might be more descriptive as to what an applicant does or did at their previous places of employment, but they can also carry a web of deceit.

The reality is, without running a background check to verify information, who knows how much embellishment is actually on those pieces of paper.

Background checks sometimes are limited to what they can uncover. For example, some employers will only release the dates that an employee worked for their company. They may not give a reason why.

That leaves it up to the applicant to decide to tell the complete truth as to why they no longer are working for that company.

A background check expert will be more versed in uncovering the truth. They can call upon an applicant’s personal and professional references.

Did you know that often time references are not aware that they have been listed on an application? They also may not know exactly what they should and shouldn’t say about someone, and may give more information than they should.

A background check expert also knows how to ask other non-work related questions to get the answers you really need. Want to really know what a reference thinks? Ask them if they would let the applicant house sit or baby sit for them. Their answers might be very telling of what kind of work they will do for you.

You can’t be there all the time, but your bottle security can

In the business of Loss Prevention, we have a saying: “You can’t be there all the time”. People usually used it as a cop out for losses that occur when they aren’t around, but it can also speak to why things like liquor bottle security are so important. I’ve been using Alpha security products for my bottle security needs for a long time, and it makes me feel comfortable that even when I’m not watching cameras, my merchandise is safe and secure with the EASy Bottle liquor bottle lock system.

I spent a lot of time and stress frustrated with losses that were occurring just after I left work or just before I got there. There is nothing worse that walking in to an employee telling you, “You just missed a case! Five minutes ago there was this guy that…” you get the picture. The fact is that no matter how much you try or how many eyes you have watching, you are never going to catch 100% of the thieves that walk into your building.

On the bright side, liquor bottle locks can do a much better job of this. For starters, bottle security is a huge deterrent. A shoplifter takes one look at that and says, “I’m going down the street to a place that doesn’t have a liquor bottle locks.” And when you have that overly determined shoplifter willing to take the risk, they will soon realize that when they get outside, they still can’t open the liquor bottle lock, and they won’t be back again. Liquor bottle security deters theft, detects theft, and prevents those pesky repeat offenders all the time, not just when you’re there.

Secured Sandals

I dripped a sweat walking to my car parked in my driveway today-summer has arrived. Regardless of what region you reside in, we can all agree that it is HOT. Change of season translates to one thing in retail: new wardrobe. Bright colors, short sleeves and linen are the mode this year.

Growing up a South Florida native, the number one summer staple (well, year-round) is flip-flops. Young, old, fat, skinny, well-dressed or out of style, everyone is sure to have at least one pair of sandals in their closet.

Flip-flops, along with other shoes, can be an easy item to steal if they are not properly tagged.

A shoplifter can easily slip off their old pair and slide into new ones. Some stores do not have space to keep shoes stocked and instead place them on racks or as open-sell items in boxes. Stores that leave pairs out for display should have checkpoint tags attached to them to prevent theft.

The ideal way to sensor flip-flops is to attach the pair of shoes together and secure them with a clothing alarm. Also, knowing what merchandise is new in season and in style can help you determine which areas to offer special attention. Taking the time to ensure that there are proper security tags on clothes will make them less vulnerable to theft.

Visit the Loss Prevention Store to purchase a clothing alarm or clothing security tags and an Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system.

Train the trainer

As a trainer and as a store manager, I have spent countless hours sitting on both sides of the training room tables. Some have been the most enjoyable and rewarding hours of my life, while others have been hours that I will never get back.

Being a good trainer means providing the necessary material in the most innovative and exciting ways possible. It also means that you need to be able to read your audience and know when you have them eating out of the palm of your hand, and when you are quickly loosing them.

Having overseen a fair amount of loss prevention training, I have the advantage of teaching a great subject matter. If your audience starts to drift off, just start telling riveting stories of high speed chases to wake them back up.

This sort of interaction is so important. I can’t imagine my employees ever walking away with as much information as what they did if they were only reading manuals or listening to a computer-training program.

If you have the opportunity to send yourself, or your employees to loss prevention seminars, or loss prevention workshops I highly recommend it. You can’t ask a computer follow up questions, and manuals don’t always clarify themselves.

I even enjoy going through additional loss prevention training. It’s a great refresher for me and gives me a chance to stay up to date with the most current shoplifting and employee theft trends.

Incremental sales to major losses

Jewelry and accessories are a fun part of working in retail. Although it is typical to find fashion accessories in most clothing retailers, I have noticed a trend in not so traditional stores selling jewelry.

They are mostly located up at the wrap stands for add on sales. Even more retailers are selling them during the holiday shopping season, and for retail, it is never to late to start thinking about holiday sales.

I was working in a home fashions boutique and we would periodically get in shipments of little bracelets. Because we really had no need for retail anti theft devices (EAS) on the majority of our merchandise (hard tag a couch? Not so much.) We would see a huge issue with theft on our bracelets.

Even at $5 or $10 dollars a pop, these little wonders sure did a number on our shrink. Because we did such a low volume of sales, these losses really added up.

It would have been nice to have access to a great new product like the Jewel Lok. Designed to work with the existing systems, Jewel Loks are tiny little locks that (for bracelets) are like a mini padlock.

The protective coating makes sure that the hoop does not scratch the bracelet. The detachers are also relatively small. Because of the space constraints, it would have been nice to have a system that felt like it was designed just for our needs. Exactly what the Jewel Loks are designed to do.

Change it up

How cool is it to be able to change things on a whim. Any time the seasons change, we can change clothes. If we want to go with a new hairstyle, go for it! The power of choice gives us the power to adapt as needed.

Retail security in the form of anti theft devices also gives us the power of change. Any time our products change, we can either start a new tagging process, or stop an existing one. Seeing a spike in shrink losses in a different area? That’s an easy fix too.

Anti shoplifting devices are designed to be adaptable. That is why hard tags are easy to attach as needed, and soft tags or labels can be applied to almost any surface or material.

Because the soft tags or labels can be run through a thermal printer, they can even be disguised as bar codes or price labels to fit your specific range of products.

There is no need to let your retail security grow stagnate. Just change it up as you change out your products.

Employee Theft is No Big Deal

Over a span of almost ten years in the loss prevention field, I have been involved with numerous employee theft investigations.  Unlike shoplifting cases, most companies want to know why an employee would turn to theft.  I would sit down on average 30-40 times per year with numerous associates asking just that question.  I will never forget the first time I heard an employee say, “the company has so much money, so I thought it was no big deal”.

No big deal??  I was taken aback by this very statement.  How can an associate with whom I’ve engaged numerous times feel internal theft was no big deal?  I had followed company programs, showed the standard employee theft investigation video during orientation, engaged in multiple conversations about theft, etc.  By the conclusion of the interview, we discussed at length the impact internal theft has, not only on the company, but on the individual stores and their employees.  They seemed to understand, but it was a huge wakeup call for me and my approach to the topic of employee theft.

Talking to associates about internal theft can be difficult and uncomfortable.  I’ve seen a drastic difference in companies that drug screen and run full background checks pre-hire vs. companies that do not.  While it may seem aggressive and costly, taking such a drastic approach on preventing employee theft prior to employment, gives associates a different mindset while on the job.  It’s been my experience that approaching the subject of internal theft and how employee theft investigations are conducted seems to be a lot easier after such intense screenings.  Showing them where cameras are located will act as a visual deterrent, not push them into spots where there is no coverage.  I am a firm believer that companies who hit the topic hard and aggressive prior to employment and keep the conversations and visual deterrence present to combat employee theft.

Your time is your money

Do you really need to tag every piece of clothes that comes into your inventory? The reality is, probably not. Some things are just not a high theft item. Sure you can use anti theft devices on all of your merchandise to increase your clothing security. I doubt it will really help you reduce your shrink, though.

It is a matter of evaluating your individual company or store needs. When I was working in high-end fashion, basics (like socks and underwear) were not high theft items.

When I worked at the farther end of the spectrum in general merchandise, packaged socks and underwear, in name brands, were high theft items.

Here I spent time adding in EAS labels to increase the clothing security. It paid off in the end because we did see a reduction in shrink losses in that product group after the labels had been added.

Spend your time wisely because time is money. The time you spend tagging unnecessary items is money lost.
