How does a thing like that get started?

When I was first starting out in the loss prevention/ asset protection field I was fascinated by employee theft investigations. More specifically, the investigative process fascinated me.

I would hear all of these stories about cases of employee theft and I would wonder, “How do they get the employee theft investigation started in the first place?”

Now, I know that a lot of investigators and agents would like you to believe that all they had to do was peer into a magic 8 ball to get all of the answers, but after working in the industry for many years, I know better.

One of the best ways to start an employee theft investigation is through employee tips. Even though nobody wants to be the store “rat”, there are still many honest people who want to stand up against a wrongdoing.

The best way to get tips is to be reliable, considerate and above reproach at all times. You have to have the trust and respect of your store before they will trust you with information.

Sometimes you can rely on theft good ol’ instinct to point you in the direction of employee theft. Remember, if for some reason you think something stinks, chances are it probably is rotten.

Lastly, it never hurts to trip over a case of employee theft by being in the right place at the right time. I did that once. Literally. I was walking around a corner and I tripped over an employee who happened to be walking a contractor out the door with product he never paid for. Nasty bit of a shock for both of us, I might say!

Red, White, and blew right by

A grab and run is a theft scenario where a person or group of people load up their arms, bags, carts, etc with store product and clothes, run as fast as they can to a car usually waiting at the curb with the engine running, and high tail it out of there.

Because it happens so fast, it is hard to identify who it was, or even to get a plate number from the vehicle.

That doesn’t mean you can’t produce some sort of clothing security to protect against a grab and run.

To start with, enforce a no parking policy in front of the store. Many stores are set up with this area as a fire lane anyway, so just use that as an excuse to move cars right along.

Next watch for anyone quickly loading up mass quantities of clothes.

If someone is lingering by the exits with product, ask them if they need any help, or offer to hold their choices at the register.

Just A Little Patience, use Bottle Security!

A friend of mine has all the passion of an entrepreneur and absolutely no patience. When news of potential privatization of the state run liquor stores hit his state he had visions of buying and running several of these locations. He gave no thought to bottle security or loss prevention of any kind. He just knew he was going to run his own fleet of package stores and be the boss.

I obviously tried to help ground him a bit as I have done throughout our friendship. I wanted him to sit down and formulate a business plan that included a well rounded loss prevention piece that addressed liquor bottle security directly. I even offered to do some research for him since I knew he would not give it a thought otherwise. I was looking for a company that made any type of liquor bottle locks. At that point in time I didn’t know if there was any such thing as a liquor bottle lock. I was hoping there would be liquor bottle locks that could be placed somewhere on the bottle to deter shoplifting. It was imperative that we find a liquor bottle security solution before my friend bought one or more of these businesses otherwise we would be playing catch up forever.

I found a company called Alpha security, they had an entire system, the EASy bottle bottle lock system that employed alarmed bottle locks. I could not believe our luck. In speaking with an Alpha Security representative I was happy to hear there were different models of the bottle lock and that he would be happy to bring the actual bottle locks to a sit down meeting to discuss Alpha security’s potential to do business with my friend.

My friend had purchased three locations and was excited to get started. We reviewed several options for bottle security including the EASy bottle bottle lock system, several versions of the bottle lock, CCTV and wireless video monitoring. The Alpha Security representative was very helpful and was very knowledgeable regarding overall liquor  bottle security. He helped my friend make some very cost effective decisions regarding his bottle security strategy. In the end it was a mix of the EASy bottle bottle lock security system and CCTV that became the foundation for my friend to secure his business.

Tags and Labels Made in the USA

First of all I should say congratulations to anyone who has decided to use any sort of retail anti theft devices. Retail security is a significant issue to any retailer who is trying to save their profits on all fronts. Better yet, congratulations on deciding to use EAS tags and labels for your anti shoplifting needs.

Now that the decision has been made, it’s time to think about some of the associated costs. You need to have at a minimum, EAS tags or labels and a tower at the entrance to alarm the devices. Just because the cost of prevention is far less than  a loss of merchandise due to theft, doesn’t mean you have to spend your last penny on them.

By going with a reliable company, it is easy to get cheap tags and cheap labels for your needs. You should be aware that many companies do offer cheap labels and cheap tags that are not made in the USA.

While they may have a good price, they may end up costing in the long run. Some do not deactivate properly causing customer complaints. Some aren’t activated, which defeats the purpose of even having them. Make sure your company uses tried and true made in the USA tags and labels to really get the most for your money.

Merchandise, in general

Working with general merchandise is a relatively new thing for me. I have spent most of my tenure working with clothing security. Overall the concepts are the same, but the clothes are different. As a result, there is a different criminal element that comes in to steal. The things they are after are not what I would usually expect.

This is where I have been seeing more clothing theft as an after thought instead of the main goal. Even without the use of anti theft devices, there is less shrink, or inventory losses in the clothing assortments.

What we do see is someone coming in and stealing personal care items, and then they may decide to take a shirt, or a pair of earrings.

The big things are baby and toddler clothes. Small little onsies or rompers fit perfectly as they are rolled up into purses, or even hidden in a pocket of a coat.

No one seems to want to just steal baby clothing, but if they are stealing something else, they take the clothes too.

The Opportunistic Criminal

Using anti-shoplifting devices such as EAS hard tags and soft tags has really done a great deal to cut down on shoplifting from the opportunist or armature shoplifter in my store. The typical shoplifter is someone that shops at the store regularly, loves the merchandise, but just can’t afford to buy it all the time. These people steal because it is easy and accessible. When you take those things away by implementing retail security or anti-theft devices, you eliminate the probability of armature theft taking place. When you remove the opportunity, you reduce the theft.

Even when you have an ambitious shoplifter, they tend to be easier to identify when you have anti-theft devices in place. Working in retail security for as long as I have, I’ve seen it all. Recently I had a shoplifter that selected a few shirts that were protected with some hard tags. I didn’t pick up on the person until they were in the corner of our shoe department using the edge of the shelf to try and pry the hard tag off of the items. They were able to wrestle a few of them off the merchandise, but it took them quite some time and a lot of determination. I had several sales floor employees contacting me and letting me know what was going on as it was so obvious. By the time they had removed the tags and concealed the merchandise I was able to contact the police and have them ready to apprehend before they even left the building.

Clearly, a Visible Solution

I have no doubt that by now you have probably seen a Keeper Box being used by some shop for retail theft prevention. A Keeper Box is a clear plastic box that has a locking mechanism on the bottom that also incorporates the security tags to stop shoplifting.

I usually see them being used to protect boxes of cologne or perfume and for boxes of razor blade cartridges. In a lot of ways, I think they are a much better solution to retail theft prevention than the lock boxes were before.

About five years ago, all you would see are these big plastic locking doors hiding all of the merchandise away. While I am sure they were highly effective to stop shoplifting, they irritated me to no end if I needed to buy something and was in a hurry. I hated having to track down an employee to unlock the panel to get my product.

Now I can just pick up a Keeper Box of the same items, toss it in my shopping cart and be on my merry way.

The boxes are unlocked at the point of sale, so I don’t have to track down an employee. Because the cash wraps have the detachers, no one runs the risk of loosing the key, wasting even more of your valuable time as a consumer.

What Are Your Qualifications?

Forget about your potential employees’ qualifications for a moment. Think about what are your qualifications, or what are the qualifications of your HR managers?

Very few people are qualified to be background check experts. It’s not that it is difficult, it is because it is a time consuming qualification that very few people have put in the hours to prefect.

Being a background check expert means more than just filling out a few forms on the computer and hitting enter. It is about utilizing resources, analyzing reports, and being adept at asking the right questions to personal and professional references.

I personally rely on the knowledge and experience of experts. I am aware that I cannot be an expert in every subject that could ever possibly arise.

I need to be able to have a broad understanding of the process and what to look for, for potential red flags, but the bulk of the pre employment screening as well as the employee background checks for existing employees should be sent out to a true background check expert.

These experts will also have a keen working knowledge of the legalities involved in running these pre employment screenings and employee background checks.

My qualifications do not cover background checks. My HR manager is more qualified than I am, but she still is not an expert in background checks.

It is time to let the professionals be the experts and have them run background checks completely and thoroughly.

Before We Had Bottle Locks

When I first started working in Loss Prevention it was before the days that a liquor bottle lock could be affordable and easy to use. We didn’t even give liquor bottle locks a second thought. Our liquor bottle security was simply catching shoplifters. Now, I can’t imagine not using liquor bottle locks as our bottle security. Without it we were extremely vulnerable to theft.

We caught a lot of shoplifters in those days. We had a window on the second floor that overlooked the liquor aisle; all I needed to do was sit up in my perch and watch. I would be guaranteed at least one shoplifter a day with this method. It was great, I was being very productive. But if you think about it, if it was that easy to catch a shoplifter, how many bottles were going out the door when I wasn’t there.

Deep down I think we knew that even though we were catching a lot of shoplifters, we were not really having as big of an effect on our shortage as we should have been. I wish we had decided to become an early adopter of the liquor bottle lock. It would have saved us a lot of time and money. Once we started using Alpha Security liquor bottle locks we really started to see a dent in our shortage numbers. Bottle security was the best thing we could have done to hold on to our inventory.

One of the best things about EASy bottle liquor bottle security is that your inventory is safe even when you aren’t watching. We still catch a lot of shoplifters, but now we have more time to focus on other areas where losses were previously being missed.

Lock it in

The clothing industry or the fashion industry at whatever level you can think of (high end, specialty, even low cost) knows that clothing is the bread and butter of their market or niche.

What I mean by that is the basic clothing sales are what keep them going. Sales around the jeans, the little black dress, even plain white men’s undershirts, are what keeps most clothing companies in business.

The profitability of these stores or businesses come from add on sales. Think about the shoes and accessories. You can easily spend the same amount of money on the shirt and pants as what you can to finish that outfit off with shoes, a bag and of course, jewelry.

When you carry jewelry you enter into a new sticky realm of balancing out the additional sales, and the inevitable shoplifting that will come along with it.

Clothing security tags do not work well on jewelry. What you can do is pair your Checkpoint tags with the new Jewel Lok.

Similar to the Checkpoint tags effectiveness at deterring shoplifters, the Jewel Lok is a locking mechanism that attaches directly onto the loose jewelry and earrings. These Loks set off a clothing alarm if they are not removed at the point of purchase.

Because the Lok attaches directly onto the product, it cannot be discarded like the old soft tag in the jewelry cards.
