The shiny new bracelets

It has been a busy week for shoplifters. I guess when the weather gets warm and everyone is out, some people are trying to sneak into the crowds to shoplift clothes undetected.

We have had our share of cuts and scrapes from shoplifters trying to take off the anti theft devices. We use a better quality tag, so it does not pry apart easily, or can be cut with wire snips without doing some damage to themselves in the process.

You have to watch what kind of EAS tags you use for your clothes. All too often the cheap tags are of poor quality and workmanship. The plastic is thin and easy to break. Any seams are not sealed tight and allow for a screwdriver to pry them loose.

Just because you need a cheap tag doesn’t mean you have to settle for an inferior product. You spend the time to ensure a quality product in your store. Do your clothes justice and give them quality EAS tags to protect them.

Why you should use Anti-Theft Devices…

We all know retail security is a tough and necessary game.  There are so many different factors in performing the job that it can seem daunting at times.  What makes it worse however, is that even after you have taken every possible anti-shoplifting precaution or have access to, and use, every anti-theft device on the planet, somehow there is someone out there who will still steal from you. The truth of the matter is,  It doesn’t matter HOW they do it or even WHY they do it, they just do it and that’s all we need to concern ourselves with.  That is why when we get beat (and don’t say you haven’t because we know that’s a lie) we need to learn what our weakness was and adapt to compensate for it.

An example would be a recent endeavor to stop a series of snatch and grab thefts occurring in our high-end children’s clothing area, which is unfortunately positioned within twenty feet of a main exit.  It took two hits to that area before we realized what was happening and required installing and affixing more anti-theft devices.  When that didn’t work we installed a brand new camera to catch him in the act.  That failed too.  He was too quick and there wasn’t enough time to spot him and apprehend him.

The solution, move this target section to the far end of the second floor.

When it comes to retail security you just need to think outside the box to succeed.

I have something in my pocket

There are plenty of clothes and accessories that do not accommodate a hard EAS anti theft device used for clothing security. It may not seem like a soft adhesive label would be a good fit, but if you get a little creative, you can increase your odds of success in preventing theft.

If you carry wallets or purses, it is easy to slip one of the soft labels into the pocket. Of course you can leave the paper backing on if you want. Since the soft labels will not adhere correctly to some fabrics or flowing materials, there is not a need to even try to stick them on somewhere.

You can put the labels in the pockets of jeans or other pants. Hard tags might be too bulky for some of the skinny jeans, even at the bottom cuff.

Since the labels can stay on the paper, it is simple to cut them apart, or even just rip the paper rolls with your fingers to expedite the process.

Low Tech, High Quality

One of the anti shoplifting tools commonly used out in the retail sector is the Keeper Boxes. These boxes are absolutely ingenious in my book. I hadn’t really paid much attention to them until recently.

I think that is one of the best indicators of a successful anti shoplifting device. If your average paying customer can go about their shopping business and not have to pay attention to it, than you are better off for it. If the resources designed to stop shoplifting are hindering or stop selling, than you know you have a problem.

That is what is great about a Keeper box. If I need a pack of razor blades, I can very easily go up to the product throw one in the cart, and keep on shopping.

I recently had a chance to evaluate one of the Keeper boxes. What I hadn’t realized before was that for a seemingly simple concept, it was an extremely high quality way to stop shoplifting.

This wasn’t some flimsy plastic box that could be smashed or pried apart at the seams. This box was very well thought out. The alarm was hidden out of view, and could not be tampered with. It had a simple sliding mechanism to open up easily with the proper detachers, but was not so complicated that you run the risk of breaking pieces with repeated use.

Getting close, but not close enough

Do you have a best friend at work? For many employees out there, they do. It is someone who they joke and kid around with at work. They can vent about how they had a bad day, and the at work friend understands because they know the environment and the people in the story.

While some people do take these friendships to the next level and gather outside of the workplace, many companies do prohibit fraternization on any sort of level. At work friends, when kept at work, are an important part of employee morale so they are not limited.

The question is, do we really know our at work friends? Do we really know that person and what they are capable of if we only see them in a certain light or environment?

This is where employee background checks come into play. No matter how well you might think you know one of your employees, if you only see them on the job, you are probably not fully aware of any issues they might be having outside of work.

Employee background checks can uncover financial and criminal histories that may have begun since the employee was hired.

It is always disheartening for employees to find out that their at work buddy was caught stealing, or was terminated for drug or alcohol usage on the job. A background check might get you closer to that employee, so you really know what they are all about.

Bottle Locks, your Solution for liquor bottle security

Many years ago I worked in a local ABC shop owned by a good friend and entrepreneur.  The business did great at first but we quickly realized that some of our best customers were our worst customers because bottle security wasn’t something we had considered.

Every morning I would arrive early and stock the shelves with merchandise.  We wanted to make sure the shelves were completely stocked at opening because we always had a surge of regular customers before lunch.

Having only one employee working at a time made simultaneously running a cash register and assisting customers on the sales floor a real challenge. Within a month we lost more than $500 USD in product.  That means we lost more than $1,000 USD in potential sales and $500 USD in profit.

Bottle security needed to be a priority!

We contacted a local loss prevention consultant and they recommended a number of bottle security choices.  The plan was to start small and work our way into a more sophisticated loss prevention liquor bottle lock system.  We eventually settled on EASy bottle liquor bottle locks by Alpha Security and rolled them out within a week of placing our first order.

The following Monday when we revealed our new liquor bottle locks from Alpha Security, the suspected shoplifters were shocked!  Liquor bottle Security was clearly not something the shoplifters had considered.  The simple fact that we made an investment in liquor bottle security sent a clear message to our customers.

Each bottle lock required a nominal investment and we immediately got a return on our investment.  Bottle Locks are easy to use and they don’t inhibit our merchandising opportunities.  These days everyone knows what anti-shoplifting devices look like and why retailers use them.  Our legitimate customers could care less if we use EASy bottle liquor bottle locks.

It is only the shoplifters and thieves that are turned away by a bottle security.

Accessible solutions

Accessibility can be a key component to merchandising and sales. In my time as a department manager for a men’s clothing outfitters, I spent a lot of time evaluating and changing out my display mannequins.

If I put an outfit up on display on Friday morning, by Sunday afternoon, all of my product, well at least the popular sizes, would be completely sold out. If I didn’t have any of an item on the shelf, the shirt would literally be taken off of my mannequin’s back.

It was about having the merchandise accessible to the customer’s that allowed for the sales to take place. They could see the clothing hang correctly. They could touch and manipulate the fabrics. They could visualize themselves in those clothes. Accessible.

With the mannequin displays, it was easy to use clothing security tags. I could hide them in the fold of a collared shirt, or even retag the pants in the back waistband. It was easy to rearrange the clothing security tags without jeopardizing our clothing security.

I didn’t need my clothing security to be like Fort Knox with every thing under a strict lock and key. I just needed enough security to make sure that if someone did try to steal the clothes that the clothing alarm would go off as they exited the store.

Who do you trust?

When you are running a business it is very important to know whom you trust and whom you don’t. Hopefully, anyone in your store that has access to keys, alarm codes, and store funds (including sales deposits) is on your trustworthy list.

If they are not on your list, I trust that you have a plan in place to remove them from your employment.

Employee theft accounts for over 40% of a store’s losses, which makes it extremely vital that your key positions are held by employees with the highest of standards and scruples.

Sometimes, as a manager or owner, you might only be seeing one side of these employees. They may act very differently around you than when they are alone. Let’s face it; if an employee is going to steal from you, they aren’t going to do it right in front of your face.

They might, however, do it around other employees, many of whom are not in a position of authority. So how do you instill trust in those employees to come and talk to you about what goes on behind your back?

Take the loss prevention workshop specifically on how to talk to your employees about employee theft, and entrusting you with that information.

Some of the best information on some of my biggest cases of employee theft have come directly from my employees.

An extension of your personality

For many women (and men) out there jewelry and accessories play a major part of identifying who we are as a person. Think about someone you know who never leaves the house without a signature piece of jewelry. Maybe it is a beautiful estate necklace. Perhaps it is a constant myriad of funky jewelry designed to make a bold statement. Maybe it is just a simple gold wedding band. The point is jewelry is often an extension of our personalities.

That is why jewelry and accessories play such an important role in generating sales revenue for retailers.

Unfortunately, for most retailers, jewelry and accessory departments are often one of the highest shrink product groups. The traditional retail anti theft devices are slowly growing obsolete.

Having a soft tag embedded into a paper jewelry package just doesn’t cut it anymore. They don’t prevent shoplifting when the shoplifters simply remove the jewelry from their cards and toss the packaging away before they leave the store.

Jewel Loks, on the other hand, prevent the shoplifters from removing the jewelry from the packaging. By eliminating this kind access to the product, shoplifters are thinking twice about trying to steal.

By utilizing Jewel Loks in display and in merchandising standards, you don’t have to worry about detracting the honest consumer from their purchase. They are discrete and are designed to allow the jewelry to fit on peg hooks and rounders, like they normally do.

Women are craving to let their personalities run free through the use of accessories; Jewel Loks allow them the means to do so.

Where do I begin?

I don’t even know where to start. I ordered the free samples form RBC Security Solutions, expecting to have a small envelope delivered with one of their labels inside.

To my utter shock and amazement, there was not a single label inside. There were strips of six different types of labels! I didn’t even know where to start. It was not what I was expecting from a company trying to sell cheap labels and cheap tags.

There was more product than what I ever expected, and that makes it only that much easier to see what a great representation of anti theft devices this company makes.

When you can look and feel how the labels are going to work and look, it is easier to make decisions about how to enhance your retail security.

I could actually take a strip of labels to my thermal printer to make sure it would run through correctly, and they did! That is not something you could do if they had just sent out one lonely label in their bright green envelope.
