Minimize Wine and Liquor Theft By Maximizing Liquor Bottle Security

Bottle security is something that all businesses engaged in liquor and wine sales can take for granted.  Bottle theft is very common in the food and beverage industry because a server, cook or dish washer can quickly remove inventory from a stock room while everyone is busy on the sales floor.

Locking inventory in a closet to control access is a great first step but we all know the stockroom will be unlocked at times. EASy Bottle bottle locks by Alpha Security are a great tool for reducing theft through deterrence.

A hotel restaurant I once worked for didn’t have liquor bottle security in place during the busy holiday season.  They hired about 10-15 seasonal support staff members during this time so it was tough to make money because tips were split between so many people.

Dinner was the busiest shift and we started noticing high-end vodka disappearing in the evening.  Everything was locked in a stock room but it was hard to keep the door secured because so many people needed ready access.  Servers didn’t have time to wait for a key holder because customers’ meal orders were already delayed because of the evening rush.

A bottle lock was placed on each high-theft item before they were placed in the stockroom.  When the vodka stopped walking out the back door the red wine started disappearing.  The restaurant manager decided to place an EASy bottle bottle lock by Alpha Security on each bottle before it was placed in the stockroom.

The access key to the bottle locks was kept at the server station for ready access.  Implementing liquor bottle security stopped out inventory from walking out the back door.  It was learned that one of our seasonal cooks was stealing from the stock room while servers were on the sales floor and liquor bottle security helped management identify the thief.

We can’t always be perfect…

Although we wish our LP careers were perfect we all have moments when we just get beat.

Today was one of those days for me.

I was alone in my office and dealing with half a dozen other problems when it happened.  While listening to the droning monotone of a liability investigator on the other end of the office phone I kept myself busy by scanning through cameras on the CCTV monitor closest to me.  At the fifteen minute mark of my conversation I noticed a man who looked completely out of place in the store’s children’s clothing department.  Given his appearance and his unnaturally stuffed shopping bag through which I could see security tags on clothes, my attention shifted from dealing with the accident aftermath to observing the man much more closely.

Less than sixty seconds later I hung up on the liability investigator.

The man had selected three pairs of children’s jeans and a child’s printed sweatshirt and rapidly moved away from the department towards the nearby housewares area.  As soon as I paged for a store manager to dial my office extension the man took off down to the first floor in a jog.  I radioed mall security with his description and called local law enforcement as I ran out my office and could hear the Checkpoint tags set off the clothing alarm as the man crossed the threshold into the mall and went into a full sprint.  Other LP units in the mall had eyes on him even as he started ripping clothing security tags off the stolen merchandise as he ran, but somehow he not only made it to his vehicle, he also managed to elude police and avoid being identified.

Even with obvious clothing security in place, it only took a two minute grab and dash job to undo it all. Though security tags on clothes are effective they can in some cases be defeated. The only way to truly be diligent in our duties as LP professionals is to use all of the tools in our arsenal including CCTV and Checkpoint tags but even then we are sometimes defeated.

Gain a new perspective

As a loss prevention manager, I never got to close to my store employees. There was always a professional separation. I never went out for drinks after work, or celebrated an employee’s birthday or holiday party. It was this separation that made me good at my job, especially when it came to employee theft investigations.

It is never easy to have to terminate an employee. It is even harder to have to terminate an employee and send them off to jail. You know their lives, and future job prospects; will never be the same again.

The separation I had between me and my employees helped two fold. It helped me (without bias) identify employees that were stealing from the company. It also helped not having an emotional attachment or friendship to these employees who were to be terminated and prosecuted.

While there were specific guidelines to this effect in my loss prevention training, it also came about as just useful practice.

As a small business owner, you might not be able to have this same luxury of objectivity. That is why taking in a loss prevention workshop on employee theft will help you overcome these emotional ties.

Loss prevention seminars are designed to help you not only gain objectivity, but also useful information on how to identify employee theft, and then how to legally deal with it.

Just use a little Finesse

When you work with pieces of jewelry, regardless of high end, fashion, one of a kind estate pieces, or costume, you know that you need to be extremely careful with those pieces.

Most consumers who are looking to purchase a piece of jewelry will scrutinize every centimeter of that piece. They will hold it up to the light, turn it around in the air, and then look some more. Even the tiniest blemish will negate a potential sale.

The last thing you want is to be trying to satisfy a customer, they finally decide to buy the jewelry and then your employee scratches or mars the jewelry in the checkout process.

For some, this is a bigger issue for retail anti theft devices than whether or not it will prevent shoplifting. With Jewel Loks, your impeccable jewelry should remain blemish free.

When I first saw the Jewel Loks, I worried that because they were so fool proof, they would be difficult to remove. If you have to fight with a Jewel Lok, you would run the risk of damaging your pieces.

So I did a little research into the removal process. How simple it is! You don’t have to shake or wiggle or slide your jewelry. You delicately lay a piece on top of the detacher, and it does the work for you to easily slide the Jewel Loks off.

All it takes is a little finesse and your jewelry is safely going home with your happy customer.

Need to use a little finesse

After receiving my free samples of the anti theft devices RBC provides for its customers, I had to go back to the website to check on something.

I was sent a rounded disk that looks similar to a flattened out golf ball. I could twist the two halves, but could not get it apart. Was I missing a piece perhaps?

Well, my discovery was great. I found the product. It was a “Golf Ball Hard Tag”. After looking at the additional pictures, it all made sense to me.

The golf ball tag actually has the pin enclosed in one of the halves. This tag is designed for clothes that need a little bit of finesse when using a hard tag.

Because the pin is inside the tag, stretchy or open weave materials are locked into place. These fabrics cannot be manipulated to stretch over the pin and allow a shoplifter to remove the hard tag.

I am glad I took a look at this item up close. Without seeing the sample in person to make the connection to the description on the web site, I never would have known what I was missing.

Organized Retail Crime Thieves

Not long ago we were having huge problems with Organized Retail Crime thievescoming in and taking whole stacks of Levi’s. At that time we didn’t have any clothing security in place in our low risk stores, and we paid for it. You wouldn’t know you had been hit by a booster until you looked over and saw a missing stack of jeans where there had once been a full stock of them. The boosters were very quick and would be in and out of your store in less than five minutes. We would catch one now and again after dedicated focus on the department, but the problem didn’t stop. They would keep coming back making the circuit of our area stores and wiping out our denim supply. We knew we had to make a change and that we needed to get some anti-theft devices in place to stop this constant theft.

We jumped on it full force and used cheap tags all of our Levi’s. It was a bit of an investment at first to get the supplies, but it quickly became a worth while investment. It was astonishing how quickly the boosting stopped. The ORC groups didn’t want to bother with the hard tags and moved on to somewhere else where they didn’t have to.

Don’t let shoplifters scare your Halloween profits. Use Clothing Security Tags.

With the holidays fast approaching, many businesses are getting ready for an increase of sales that comes with this being the busiest retail time of the year. The increased customer base can translate to more money for your business, but it can also mean more people trying to steal your merchandise. The last thing you want to be worried about is theft. One of the best ways to utilize clothing security is through security tags on clothes.

With clothing security tags, you can be more worried about ghosts and ghouls than shoplifters. At the stores I cover as a loss prevention agent, the managers and associates want to place their full focus on ensuring the customer has an awesome experience in finding the perfect clothes for their friends and family. Not all stores have the resources for a full loss prevention team so utilizing Checkpoint tags can make a huge difference in putting a scare on the holiday shoplifters that can plague your store.

Clothing security tags are easy and quick to install. They work with the entire clothing security system to sound an alarm when someone attempts to take your merchandise outside of the store. They do what all shoplifters want to avoid: draw attention. Shoplifters are familiar with clothing alarm devices and they would rather go somewhere else than risk getting caught removing the security tags on clothes. The devices keep the merchandise on the shelves so your customers can find the perfect presents.

Instead of letting the shoplifters put the “boo” in your night, install clothing security tags and scare those thieves away!

A Shoplifter’s worst Enemy, Anti-Theft Devices

Clothing security is important in any retail establishment if that establishment wants to make profit. If you go into any major retailer out there I can guarantee you that Loss Prevention has a list of the top shrink/loss departments. I can also guarantee you that on a list of five departments, three will be clothes.

Clothes are easy to steal and that is the reason that they appear on top shrink lists. Investing in anti-theft devices including various forms of security tags will greatly lower your shrink. It’s a safe investment but best of all it is an inexpensive one as well. There are plenty different kinds of cheap labels and cheap tags available to fit your business needs.

Let’s say anti-theft devices were placed on jeans. The device was placed incorrectly on a pair and it was not visible to a shoplifter, the tag failed in its purpose. But like a good partner, a cheap label was there visibly stating that merchandise from that specific rack was all protected. The shoplifter changes his mind and leaves the store, and you just saved some clothes.

Anti-Theft Devices Hurt Theft not Sales!

The most commonly stolen item at my store is denim. Until recently we had little to no anti-shoplifting measures to stop shoplifting in this department. It was like a free-for all. These items were walking out the door just as fast as we were able to fill the shelves because we had no anti-shoplifting devices. How are we supposed to do our jobs as loss prevention if the companies weren’t helping up out with any anti-shoplifting support or retail theft prevention?

We recently started using Checkpoint security tags, which makes sense sine we are already using Checkpoint security systems for the store alarm. The Checkpoint security tags are simple and get the job done. You place the pin into the clothing and attach the tag portion and BAM anti-shoplifting device to the rescue!

Checkpoint security tags are the king and queen in retail theft prevention. When a company starts using Checkpoint security tags it has a 30% return on investment (ROI) in the first year of installing them. I have worked with Checkpoint systems at other retailers. I have used their camera systems, alarm systems, deactivation pads, EAS (Electronic Article System) towers, and Checkpoint tags. Checkpoint systems make my job a lot easier.

When spinning cameras looking to catch a shoplifter one of my favorite things to look for is people checking the merchandise for Checkpoint security tags. That is the first indicator that tells us that this person is looking to steal something. Most shoplifters will go through a few stacks of jeans to find one missing its security tag. I once had the Director of Loss Prevention for my company in my store say he had heard that we had been dealing with a lot of denim boosters in our stores and wanted to see the video. When we played it for him he had us pause and rewind it several times. He pointed out how the guys would check the pants for tags as they selected them. He really enjoyed seeing that the extra measures we had taken with security by adding checkpoint security tags to our merchandise were really paying off. When we first started using Checkpoint systems there was a lot of push back from the stores thinking we were going to hurt merchandise sales because of it. The Director of Loss Prevention had us copy the video for him and he played it for others in the company that were skeptical about using the Checkpoint systems. He showed them exactly where we were making an impact to our bottom line. Without these tags we would have lost a lot more merchandise than we did that year. We never heard another complaint after that. It just goes to show that Checkpoint security systems really work for retailers.
