ORC and clothing security tags

Today my store was the victim of the perfidious workings of an organized retail crime (ORC) group.  They bypassed everything from the clothing alarm to the Checkpoint tags as though they weren’t even in place.  In spite of their ability to surpass our clothing security measures, they failed in the end due a foolish oversight on their part (and perhaps a small amount of carelessness and arrogance).

Less than ten minutes after the first group of three women had escaped to their vehicle and fled the mall’s property (without anyone able to spot a license plate unfortunately) our office received a phone call about a man attempting to return nearly three hundred dollars of clothing product on the second floor, without a receipt.  Some of the pieces still had clothing security tags on them.

Under our advisement, and a second from management, the return was denied and the man left in a hurry through the third floor where I was waiting to follow on foot.  Sure enough, after tailing him along the outside of the mall for almost three minutes, I found him getting into a car that contained the three women who had stolen the clothing only moments prior.  I managed a walk-by that allowed me to call in the license plate number and a full description of the car to the local police.

Clothing security isn’t always such a task, with the foot pursuits and police intervention, but it seems to be becoming more and more common an occurrence these days.  Despite the fact that the Checkpoint tags and clothing alarms were defeated so effortlessly by them, the tools did provide us with the time and means to identify a rather experienced organized crime group.

Let the battle begin

If you know anything about waging a war, you know that the key to defeating your opponent all stems from the amount of preparedness that you put in. You need a battle plan, you need to strategize, and you need to know what you’re talking about.

Shoplifting is a battle worthy topic. Preventing shoplifting in your stores is not only about reducing the monetary losses from lack of inventory or residual sales. It is also about how to keep your employees and your customers safe inside your stores.

No one wants to be in the middle of a crime-ridden slum. You definitely do not want your store to turn into one because shoplifters have been left untouched for too long.

This is where loss prevention training comes in. It allows you to successfully create a strategy (or battle plan) to eliminate the shoplifters from your store. Going through loss prevention seminars and loss prevention workshops will give you the details and insight you need to take your plan to the next level.

These seminars will go through the basics of types of shoplifters and how to identify them. They will also go through more difficult scenarios such as how to safely and legally approach shoplifters and how to get them out of your store.

The broad spectrum

How cool is it to have so many different, and specific retail anti theft devices to prevent shoplifting?

Retail anti theft devices have come a long way since the days of plain old hard tags. They evolved into dual ink tags, soft tags, and now they are in just about every size and shape imaginable to protect your varied inventory needs.

Alpha has a wide range of high theft solutions that they have worked hard to ensure meet your high customer service standards. There is a very good reason why Alpha has been doing this for over thirty years.

Let me point out their line of 3 Alarm products that they have developed. The 3 Alarm refers to the three phase audible alarm embedded into their retail anti theft devices. It alarms at the doors, it alarms if tampered with, and it alarms for ten minutes after it has been removed from the store.

The 3 Alarm products include bottle locks for liquor and wine bottle security. They also have keeper boxes for items like cosmetics, razors, or colognes. And they have clothing solutions that include a hard tag and a lanyard to protect both garments and accessories.

When you create such a wide spectrum of products, you know that the technology involved will be consistent regardless of which solution you need.

Employee theft involving external forces

Not every employee theft investigation is going to be the same.  Sure the excuses rarely change flavor: “I needed the money”, “I have a gambling problem”, “I just thought I could get away with it”, “I didn’t think anyone would notice”, but the methods involved tend to vary enough that such investigations hardly ever follow the same pattern.

Because more and more employees are becoming aware of the so-called ‘eyes-in-the-sky’ (that’s us in the Loss Prevention game for those who are having trouble following along) and our constant focus on internal theft many have begun to try more complex and determined tactics to fleece their companies of goods and currency.  The trend that is truly taking off is using outside help to accomplish illicit goals.

In one particularly recent internal theft incident I caught someone free-bagging goods with the help of a friend.  The employee and friend had met up towards the rear of the store and were chatting when I spotted them.  It was hardly conspicuous until I noticed the two women discussing in some detail the items in the friend’s basket.  After about ten minutes the employee went up to the front of the store to a register which was unnecessary as she was only a back-up cashier and there was no line.  Then the friend went to said register to ‘check-out’.  Here was where it got interesting.  The total sale for all of the products came out to around $45.00 and the friend handed over a fifty dollar bill.  The cashier then handed her back three ten dollar bills as change.  When the drawer was clocked at the end of the night there was only the $30.00 discrepancy which they couldn’t rectify to any single transaction until I brought my employee theft investigation to light.  When later confronted in interview the employee stated “I didn’t think anyone would notice that”.

This summer’s hottest mini, now available to you

Let the fashion world beware! The hottest mini to hit the runway is ready to hit your stores. This is the Mini Hard Tag.

Boasted as one of the most popular hard tags, this little anti theft device is the perfect addition to all of your summer clothes.

Small in size, and available in standard black, these tags are sure to please all of your customers. No worries about fussing with a tag to try on some clothes. No unsightly, huge, plastic bombshells stretching out your delicate fabrics and clothing.

The Mini Hard tag registers the alarms at the doors from up to 4.5 feet away, so there is clearly no loss of power to their 8.2 MHz frequency (which means they are compatible with your Checkpoint Security Systems).

Because of the Mini Hard Tag’s small stature, this anti theft device is also an easy substitute for any place you want to upgrade your clothing security from the soft, paper backed, RF labels.

It Takes Two Types

There are two types of bottle security: Passive and Assertive. When one starts to look at how to protect the investment of liquor and wine inventory, it is important to take a dual approach. While there are many different components to passive and assertive theft prevention, here are a few examples of each one.

A passive form of liquor bottle security is one that leaves an impression in someone’s mind that there is more to your bottle security program. It can be as simple as taking inventory on a daily basis. That doesn’t mean you have to count every bottle every day. It could just mean you pick a select grouping to count. Anyone who is watching (employee or customer) will have the impression that if something is missing, you will know immediately. They will be less likely to steal.

An assertive form of liquor bottle security would be the use of an anti theft device such as the EASy bottle from Alpha security. This is a product that attaches over the mouth of a bottle. It prevents the contents from being consumed prior to purchase. The EASy Bottle liquor Bottle lock will also sound an alarm at the doors if the lock gets too close.

These liquor bottle locks are visual deterrents against shoplifting. It is a more in your face approach, as anyone who enters your establishment will take note of their presence.

Being passive and assertive in your shrink reduction will lend to consistent levels of profit. Taking a dual approach will strengthen your rate of success.

Tag it all?

The big concern about deciding what clothes to tag was always figuring out what was our top priority. With a limited supply of tags, our goal was to always use the clothing security that we had on the merchandise that it would be most beneficial on.

It was a combination of figuring out what merchandise was most expensive and what merchandise was most likely to be targeted for theft. We used those factors in order to implement our retail anti-theft devices as effectively as possible. While we were able to limit the theft of those protected items, we were still having major problems with theft elsewhere. When we protected one item the shoplifters just moved on to another. It was an endless game of cat and mouse, doing everything we could to figure out what was going to be targeted next, and get to it before the shoplifter did.

With the prices or hard tags and other clothing security options coming down, we don’t have to make those choices any more. Our game of chasing the next hot items has ended. Cheap tags allow for tagging strategies from focusing of a few key items to covering the whole store level. Now we can focus on more important things, like catching the shoplifters.

The Key to Profits is Clothing Security

Throughout my years of being a Loss Prevention Officer, I came to the realization that retail anti-theft devices placed properly on clothes can save a lot of headache, worry, and most of all money. If your main source of sales come from softlines (i.e. clothes), profitability and clothing security go hand in hand.

A large part of preventing as much loss as possible is deterring theft. Deterring theft is an inexpensive tactic that all businesses should take seriously. If you are a thief what would you rather steal: A stack of jeans with anti-theft devices in place? Or a stack of jeans that are un-protected just asking to be taken? Stores without no loss prevention or minimal loss prevention staffing must employ deterrence, clothing security, and customer service tactics in order to prevent as much of this type of loss as possible.

Visual deterrents are the best tools for this. As stated earlier, these tactics are very inexpensive. Cheap tags that clip onto clothing can come in all sorts of sizes and shapes to fit the needs of your business. These cheap tags will not damage the merchandise either, so there is no need for worrying about damaging your clothes. Cheap labels are a nice compliment for the tags and anti-theft devices in acting as a further visual deterrent for any potential shoplifters. Cheap labels warn would-be thieves that the merchandise is protected, and any type of theft will be detected.

Don’t let a Crowd blow your apprehension!

I learned a series of valuable lessons on Saturday.  The most important of all of is that if you are approaching a suspect and they are with a group of other people you have to separate them from that group no matter what.  If not, your endeavors to ensure proper retail theft prevention may prove for naught.

A perfect example of this occurred this past weekend.  A suspect was spotted on the floor, followed throughout the store via cameras by myself and the LPM as she selected a fragrance and used her nails and teeth to remove the plastic anti-shoplifting shell from the item.  Once that was accomplished she discarded everything but the perfume itself in various parts of the store until she left where she was stopped by another member of the team under orders of the LPM.

The problem took place when she was being escorted back inside.  Before she had been stopped she had rendezvoused with several friends who were not only following her back inside the store, but also creating a scene.  At one point I thought they would start a riot.

While this was occurring she was claiming she no longer had the item.  I directed my LPM via radio to the locations of the anti-shoplifting shell and the other discarded pieces but she insisted that the perfume was still in the store.  A friend of hers directed the LPM to a display rack and produced the missing perfume.

We were shocked and under the immediate assumption it was a bad stop until I reviewed the video.  Not once had the suspect come within ten feet of the display.  That led us to the conclusion that while the group was creating a scene one of them planted the item there AFTER returning to the store.

The moral of this story of retail theft prevention: kick the crowds to the curb and just take the suspect.

It is like online dating

One of the parts of reviewing job applications that I dislike is trying to decide what a person is really like. A standard, fill in the blank application is often as useless as looking through a resume, or even worse, an online profile.

I feel like I am in a bad online dating program. Applicants are trying their best to come across as successful winners. The reality is often far from that truth.

Because the applicants have the ability to manipulate the data they enter, put their own spin on job descriptions and responsibilities, it can be impossible to tell the studs from the duds.

No one will ever put down that they were terminated for theft, or poor attendance. No one will ever admit that they slacked off at their jobs and their bosses were happy to see them quit.

This is where background check experts can drill down to get the real truth of the matter. They have the ability to run background checks that include both an employee background check, as well as a criminal background check.

Background check experts can even call up references to see if they, for one, even exists, much less would ever want to work with that applicant again. They will then review their findings from the criminal background check and the employee background check.

These background checks, along with the references will put together a more compete applicant profile than the one they might want you to believe in.
