How to stop internal theft at a satellite property

This doesn’t necessarily apply to everyone company out there, but if your store or company possesses an employee run satellite property like a warehouse or shipping site you may want to give this a read.

Catching internal theft in your immediate vicinity is tough enough as it is.  If you give said employees a building all to themselves with nothing but product and time they will figure out a way to fleece you good.  Even if you implement standard methods of catching employee theft like installing cameras or making random inventory counts they will still find some way to get around it.

My store in particular has an off-site warehouse which is manned for eight hours out of the day by two members of the stock team.  It is a dull post and the warehouse is filled to the rafters with expensive product ranging from appliances to overstock clothing.  After a few reports of large quantities of items going missing my team conducted a full inventory of the property and found the stock levels were all wrong in comparison to what was in the system.  We tried reviewing the tapes from the warehouse cameras but came up with nothing.  Instead we used a more ‘old fashioned’ employee theft investigation to uncover the truth.

With an agreement from a nearby fast-food restaurant we established a rotation of stake-outs.  It is just as it sounds.  A member of my team, armed with a pad and a long zoom camera would sit in the parking lot across from the warehouse and watch it.

It took only two days of this to catch someone in the act.  It amounted to was a massive employee theft case that resulted in the prosecution of three employees because of their parts in the matter.  Sometimes it takes a more traditional approach to employee theft investigation to get results.

It’s EASy as 1, 2, 3

Hopefully you are looking for liquor bottle locks and bottle security solutions because you are trying to take a proactive approach to your liquor store’s liquor bottle security problem. That is truly the best way to protect your inventory and your profits. If you are already suffering inventory and sales losses as a result of liquor bottle theft, then you are now on the right path.

Alpha Security makes a wonderfully reliable and simple to use product. It is called the EASy Bottle liquor Bottle Lock. It truly is easy to use. Basically the EASy Bottle liquor Bottle Lock is a cap that is simply pushed down over the top of the liquor or wine bottle. There are three sizes that fit virtually every bottle that’s out there, so no worries about finding the right size. Just pick from your supply of Small, Large and Extra Large.

Once the cap is in place, it cannot be removed. That is, unless you have the key. The key allows you to maintain control over who can take the caps off. By limiting the access to that key, you can make sure that only your most trust worthy associates can unlock the bottles for sale. Liquor bottle security has never been as easy as this. It really is as EASy as 1- 2- 3.

Where is your weakest link?

When it comes to applying clothing security, we had a solid tagging process in place in our store. As soon as the merchandise was received, we had a tag on it. The only problem was that when I went to audit our tagging compliance on the sales floor, I was always coming up with clothes missing tags. Our receiving team swore it wasn’t them, and after observing their process I knew it had to be something else. What we finally came to realize was that one frequently missed task when providing clothing security was the tagging of returned merchandise. There are often very firm and well planned processes in place for tagging merchandise such as clothes as they are received, but if you do not have a hold on tagging merchandise as it is returned you will always come up short.

Often times returned merchandise is missed in regard to anti-theft devices. It is a process in which merchandise is brought into the store, yet it is often not considered as receiving. Because of this it can cause us to miss the regular processes that are followed when merchandise is received. Having product protection plans in place for merchandise that is returned can have a huge impact on ensuing complete accuracy.

Straightening out Your Clothing Security Situation

If you own or manage a retail establishment, chances are you sell clothes and also get them stolen from you. I have been doing loss prevention for over five years and I can honestly say that clothing is always on the top of all shrink department lists. It is important to invest in clothing security by purchasing retail anti-theft devices to place on the merchandise. These are extremely inexpensive and also have an enormous return on investment.

Cheap tags can be purchased and placed on merchandise with no risk of damaging the product. I would also recommend investing in cheap labels as well just to provide further visual protection warning shoplifters that the clothes are protected.

Clothing security is essential in businesses in order to make sure the only things leaving your store are paid for. I have done countless surveillance of shoplifters and they leave the clothes with anti-theft devices alone.

Retail theft prevention, tips you may not have know

In the world of retail theft prevention there are quite a few concepts that are treated as ‘common knowledge’ to those of us in the business.  Concepts such as ‘camera systems are no good if nobody is using them’ or ‘what’s the point in having security tags if you don’t attach them to products’.  In truth these things should be common knowledge (or more accurately common sense) to anyone in the retail game but there are some concepts that may not be so plain to see.

A good example would be retail theft prevention using your store’s layout and merchandising plan.  Even if you use the top tier Checkpoint security system and have enough Checkpoint security tags to tag your stores entire inventory these mean nothing to ‘smash and grab’ style shoplifters.  They don’t care if the products are tagged six ways from Sunday.  They don’t care if they set off every alarm on your Checkpoint security system.  All they care about is grabbing the priciest products within twenty feet of your store entrance and getting in and out as fast as possible.

In truth there is only one real way to dissuade such a criminal, apart from hiring a door guard for every minute that your store is open, you must ensure that anything in your store of any significant value (which is, of course, based on your profit margin and discretion) is placed as far towards the rear of the store as possible.  The more space between that product and your front door means the more time the shoplifter has to worry about being seen on camera, or by you which means an increased likelihood in them being identified and apprehended.

Internal Craziness

Crazy can be defined in two ways; 1. situation (i.e. you witness an event and instantly declare “wow, that was crazy”) & 2. people (i.e. that customer that becomes hopping mad over you not printing that gift receipt).  When you work in retail you grow accustom to both kinds of crazy.  The crazy that you don’t get accustomed to is employee theft.

We started to see this pattern of high dollar merchandise cards, the kind you would give to a customer if they had no receipt, all issued by the same employee.  The matter was ultra sensitive because the employee issuing the cards was an assistant manager.  The investigation started with a handful of cards totaling about $250.00 and by the end we had a total of 50 cards spanning back 2 years totaling well over $10,000.  During the interview the manager admitted to the theft and then hit us with a needed dose of reality; she was fired from her last job for doing the same exact thing.

Our company at the time did no pre-employment screening, ran no background checks, and did no criminal background checks.  This was the dose the company needed to get involved with a background check expert.  It could have saved them thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of dollars had all employees, pre-employment or not been subjected to a background check.  Seems like a smart thing to do seeing these are the people who handle the whole of your profit and goods.

Bottle Locks can be a Sobriety Check for the Would Be Shoplifter

What comes to mind when you think of your favorite brand of liquor?  If you are a merchant that sells alcohol chances are your thoughts immediately turn to liquor bottle security.  Liquor theft continues to be a major problem for retailers.  The good news is there are devices available that can help merchants prevent loss while increasing sales.

Alpha Security offers the EASy bottle liquor bottle lock system designed to provide a deterrent to theft by offering a highly visible liquor bottle lock system.  The locks can only be removed by using a key designed specifically for that device.  Alpha provides bottle locks that protect the product while looking great when applied.  Any merchant knows that having a great looking display is critical to increasing sales.  The Alpha Security EASy bottle liquor bottle security system provides an aesthetic deterrent to theft while making the product available for paying customers to handle.

I was fortunate enough to witness just how effective liquor bottle locks are while I was a market investigator for a large retail chain.  Many of the stores I was responsible for had high shrink in liquor. We understood something more had to be done to combat the theft.  It was decided that we would implement a liquor bottle security strategy on a trial basis to see how such devices would impact shortage.  Positive results were immediately apparent once the bottle locks were installed.  One incident immediately comes to mind.

I was observing the liquor department when I observed a subject, who had been known to steal liquor in the past, approach one of our high theft liquor displays.  The subject noticed the bottle locks and was visibly upset.  He angrily left the store without making any attempt to steal merchandise.  About an hour later I received an email from a neighboring store regarding a subject that stole a large amount of liquor from them.  I opened the attached picture and was surprised to see that their thief was the very one that stormed out of my store after seeing that we had liquor bottle security installed on our merchandise.  At that point I couldn’t help but feel that Al Capone himself wouldn’t dare attempt to steal our liquor.

Strange tales in the clothing security industry

All of us within the loss prevention field have had those moments where we question how people can prove to be so lacking in common sense or logic.

It wasn’t until around five in the afternoon last Saturday that our shoplifter du jour walked through the first floor mall entry point.  Right away the woman set off every alert signal in the profession: clothes that didn’t fit the weather, an almost immediate focus on the cameras, and she made a path for one of the most secluded corners of the first floor, which just so happened to be located next to the designer shirts.

With two LP detectives observing through the CCTV and one on the floor we bore witness to this young woman pulling two empty shopping bags from her pockets and then began moving from rack to rack deftly pulling clothes from their hangers and dropping them in her bags in front of dozens of other customers, some of whom spoke out or reported her actions to store employees.  She paid no attention to the fact that there were Checkpoint tags on the items she selected.  It took her all of three minutes to get her fill and try to escape through another entrance where immediately all of the clothing security tags triggered the alarm just as two LP detectives and three local police officers converged on her.  In spite of the witnesses who pointed her out, in spite of the clothing alarm that alerted everyone to her theft, in spite of the blatant video evidence she protested her innocence and insisted we were all crazy and she would see us on the end of a lawsuit.

Right now she is facing five years in prison for the extent of her crimes.

Show, Secure, Sell

What a great way to define Alpha Security’s line of 3 Alarm products. Show off your merchandise. Secure them with retail anti theft devices designed to deter and prevent shoplifting. Sell your customers your products in a comprehensive and user-friendly format.

Of course, when you have so many options available, it can get overwhelming. You need to have a place to put your retail anti theft devices where they won’t be misplaced, broken, or a hindrance to your daily operations.

That is one of the reasons why the 3 Alarm products are space efficient. In other words, they are small and therefore don’t take up much space, either on the merchandise, or in a stock room somewhere.

Show, Secure, Sell also refers to the S3 Key, which is needed to unlock the 3 Alarm products. It was pretty smart thinking to have all of the 3 Alarms use just one detacher. This clears up space on your wrap stands. You don’t need to have several different detachers taking up space as well as creating visual clutter.

Having access to hard tags, bottle locks, box keepers and Spider Wraps, all with the 3 Alarm capabilities are pretty good in and of itself. Having to use only one S3 Key to detach them is not only space efficient, but cost effective as well.
