You can’t out-run shrink!

No matter how hard you try, I’ll bet you just can’t out run your shrink losses. Most stores think that as long as they keep exceeding their sales budgets, retail security can take a back burner.

The days of stellar positive comps are over. Expenses are being cut left and right to make up for the difference in profits. Retail security is critical to bottom line profit increases. At some point, you can only cut out so much. So where do you turn?

Retail anti-theft devices are designed to dissolve your shrink losses. If you use cheap labels and cheap tags for your go to retail anti-theft devices, you can avoid costly expenses to reduce your shrink.

Not just for anti-shoplifting needs, these labels and tags will also keep your employees in check. Most companies report that around 40% of shrink is incurred by store employees. Why wouldn’t you want to make the right cost effective decision?

Don’t keep cutting, and definitely don’t try to keep running. Put the focus back on retail security in your store.

Internal theft Investigations in the Real World

An employee theft investigation is a situation most business owners and managers are uncomfortable with. This is understandable since this is a criminal and civil situation that the average businessperson rarely deals with. When an employee commits internal theft by stealing cash, merchandise, time or supplies they commit a clear crime.

Internal theft in the “real world” happens in every business with employees. We would like to think that the person we hired would not steal from us. But the sad fact is that many do. Internal theft also known as employee theft is often committed by some of the most “trusted” employees.  The problem is management’s definition of “trust”. Many managers and owners use personal trust in a business environment.

Business trust involves something called “trust but verify”. A good supervisor prevents employee theft and thus the need for an employee theft investigation by not simply assuming that work tasks are accomplished the way you want them. Following up on what and how an employee for instance is checking in stock keeps them on track and cuts down on mistakes and let’s the employee know you are involved. A simple audit of what the employee is doing or has done with feed back to them both positive and negative lets the employee know that any dishonest actions have a good chance of being discovered. Many times employee theft takes root when the employee feels that no one cares or knows what they do.

Dummy Tags are just plain DUMB!

In order to truly execute a sound shrink reduction plan, it is important to determine the overall cost analysis. If a plan reduces shrink, but also reduces sales, for example having high theft pieces of clothes under lock and key, is it really a feasible plan.

What about the financial costs to execute this reduction strategy? Retail Anti-theft devices are readily available, but what is the difference between the expensive name brands and the cheap labels and cheap tags?

What you really want to protect your clothes from theft is to use cheap labels and cheap tags that are reliable and accurate. Some foreign made labels and tags may be inexpensive, but they are not reliable.

They may reactivate themselves causing customer issues, or they may simply not be activated at all. If that’s the case, you are paying good money for a piece of plastic that doesn’t do anything at all to help you reduce shrink.

Rest assured, it is only a matter of time before the thieving community and your employees are aware of these “dummy” tags. Better put your trust and money into reliable tags from the beginning to protect your investments.

The hard sell

Over the course of my career I have had worked in several different states across the country. Each time I moved, I needed to reacquaint myself with the local and state laws regarding beer, wine and liquor sales.

Some states are dry on Sundays, and sales Saturday have a specific cut off point. Some allow liquor only to be sold in sate run stores and locations. In the state I currently live in, beer, wine and hard liquor can be sold by just about everyone in the retail community. You see it at the local supermarkets, convenience stores, drive thru, the big box retailers, and even the local dollar stores are in on a piece of the action.

With such a competitive market, each and every sale needs to count. Liquor bottle security is extremely vital. Loss of product not only robs you of your inventory, but also the sales and the customer loyalty having a full stock usually ensures. I highly recommend using any of Alpha Security’s liquor bottle locks to enhance the local store’s liquor bottle security.

With so much on the line, I don’t see how it makes any sense to not use liquor bottle locks or any sort of liquor bottle security. All too often I see a lack of security on a store’s alcohol and I know they are dearly paying the price.

Are your Anti-Shoplifting Devices worth what you pay?

In the land of retail security, retail anti-theft devices are a dime a dozen, sometimes literally. That doesn’t mean that every cheap tag and every cheap label is made up to the same standards.

When it comes to retail anti-shoplifting devices and tactics, the implementation of an EAS system when paired with EAS tags and labels can potentially decrease shrink losses tenfold. That is one of the main reasons why it is so common for retailers to use EAS systems. It also makes sense that every company out there is going to try and cash in on the sale of cheap tags and cheap labels.

Not every EAS device is created equally. Some labels are refurbished and do not have a high accuracy rate. Sometimes the labels may actually reactivate themselves if they sit too long, causing customer service issues. How much are you willing to pay for accurate results?

Just because you can make and sell inexpensive products, doesn’t really mean you should. Go to a reliable source like RBC Retail Security Solutions and make your retail security investment efficient and effective.

Our Suits were a Steal…

When I worked for a high-end retailer, we had an extensive men’s wear department. It was such a big deal that some locations in the company actually had a separate store dedicated just to men’s wear. The suits were a huge part of our bread and butter sales, so to speak.

One of the problems we did run into was missing pieces to suits. We were diligent about making sure our miss matched pants and jackets didn’t belong to each other. We would also notice that vests were starting to come up missing. It turns out, our clothing security wasn’t the greatest in the suit department, and thieves were starting to take notice.

When the economy starts going downhill people get desperate for suits for interviews and we were taking a big hit.

One of the ideas to prevent further theft was to use some retial anti-theft devices secured to the clothes. By using a cheap label in conjunction with a cheap tag, we were financially able to tag each piece of the suit.

Our losses slowly started to diminish as word spread. We also spent less time looking for the errant piece of a suit that wasn’t there.

Get SMART with your Anti-Shoplifting Plan

Retail security is a vast ever-expanding world of tips, tricks, gadgets and gizmos. Trying to determine where to start can be a completely overwhelming task. Even though there are a million ways to create an anti-shoplifting plan, try sticking to just one or two simple ways to begin with. Once you are comfortable with the scope, highlights and limitations of your plan it is much easier to move on to round two: execution.

When you are starting to execute, think of it like any other action plan. One of the methods we used frequently was the ‘SMART’ Plan. Is your plan Specific, Measurable, Actions, Realistic, and Timely?

When I train my managers, I always guide them through the SMART Plan way of thinking. All too often I would see elaborate action plans that sounded great on paper, but were far too complicated, time consuming or expensive to ever really work out, let alone work out quickly.

Pick out something easy to institute into your daily routine. Retail Ant- theft devices like tags and labels are readily available and simple to use. You can also easily procure cheap tags and cheap labels to fit into your budget. It’s an all around SMART move!

It’s Never to early in the season to protect Swim Wear!

I don’t know about you, but have you noticed all of the new swimwear in stock earlier and earlier? Yeah, it has been such a mild winter, at least for me, but I don’t think I am quite ready to be thinking about buying new suit.

I guess that’s why I’m not in charge of merchandise planning. What I am in charge of is clothing security. When I see new merchandise, particularly clothes, I think about how best to use retail anti-theft devices to reduce our store’s shrink.

Swimsuits often pose a challenge when it comes to preventing theft. The suits are made of thin material that is easily concealed in bags, purses or even under normal clothes. EAS tags aren’t always the easiest to use because the pins may snag the material.

I suggest to my stores to try a two pronged attack. First use an EAS tag on each piece of the swimsuit (yes, tag both the tops and bottoms). Then use an EAS label to attach to price tags or in the suits’ lining wherever you can.

When you are using cheap labels and cheap tags, it is financially feasible to double up on your retail anti-theft devices without creating major expenses.

Can Sales and LP really Get Along?

When it came to spending money to save money via retail theft prevention devices there was a constant battle amongst the powers that be. As I gradually moved up the chain I was privy to more and more of the details of the ongoing argument regarding anti-shoplifting strategies. What I came to realize was in order for any company executive to spend one penny of the budget they had to prove how an item would preferably generate sales or at the very least reduce shrink. Therein lies the problem, one side of the argument felt that if the company solely focused on raising sales the company could ignore shrink, the other side focused its attention solely on retail theft prevention.

One of the best and most controversial anti-shoplifting tools is the checkpoint security system. The checkpoint systems employ entrance/exit protection of product with RF pedestals that sound alarms whenever checkpoint security tags which are affixed to product are removed from the store. The Checkpoint security system was quite impressive, utilizing checkpoint security tags that are labels and hard tags. The third party arbitrator for peace was the checkpoint systems vendor. He was able to address both the sales and loss prevention concerns regarding sales and retail theft prevention. It was quite interesting to hear him talk about the fact that the checkpoint systems could actually increase sales by ensuring the product is protected and available on the sales floor for purchase. Many times high dollar items were placed one at a time on the sales floor and if stolen and not reported that product could go days or weeks without being represented on the floor thus reducing sales potential.

Utilizing the checkpoint security tags on all items allowed the sales team to place more items on the sales floor thus ensuring all products were represented at all times. The Checkpoint security tags also served its purpose as an anti-shoplifting tool. Once in place the checkpoint system was an incredible asset to the company serving the dual purpose of increasing sales and deterring theft. The system demands interaction via consistent tagging, tag audits, proper deactivation/detachment at register and proper reaction to alarms. Our executives were able to come to a smart conclusion that allowed both departments to work together for proper system installation and implementation. We have never looked back and always look for ways to make the system even more beneficial.

Covering all your pre-employment screening bases…

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a million times already; there is no singular perfect way to catch criminals.  If someone is truly set upon finding a way of stealing or defrauding your company, they will likely find a way and get away with it for some time before you actually catch on and stop them.  That is why you always need to employ multiple systems, some that simply overlap in function and others that provide redundancy for what you may already have in order to catch such criminals before they do too much damage.

Case in point: Employee background checks.  Any sort of pre-employment screening is done as a form of preventative measure to make sure you aren’t hiring a known ‘bad seed’.  But sometimes just requiring a basic employee background check isn’t enough to catch everything.  If you want to be sure you have covered all your bases you need to take the time to enforce a full suite of background checks and pre-employment screening.  Many years ago I worked for a certain company that dealt with a lot of sensitive information on a regular basis (as in every second of the day).  Their pre-employment screening process was intense, including a preliminary drug screening, fingerprinting, standard background check, criminal background check, credit checks, and even a medical history.  It took them two weeks just to get the results from everything before they hired me.  But even with all of those safeguards in place before they even take anyone on as an employee, it didn’t prevent those who got hired from conducting illicit activities.

During my two year tenure, there were no less than seven known instances of employees being fired for committing fraud or embezzling customer assets.  So while background checks are certainly helpful, without maintaining constant vigilance over your workforce they can still harm your business.
