Does your Lack of Bottle Security effect your Neighbors?

People do some crazy things when they are drunk, even I have some wild stories about a few college buddies. It seems like they always start with “ Yeah this one time we were out drinking…” While some of them are pretty down right funny, others can be a little scary.

Over the years I have apprehended my share of shoplifters who stole under the influence. Generally when we called the local police in, they would discover that the liquor had been stolen from another retailer as well.

While I typically try to focus my shrink reduction strategies around my own store, I do think about how another retailer’s losses are directly related to mine.

If the liquor store down the street was using some sort of bottle security like liquor bottle locks, would we be seeing the same amount of losses?

I know that Alpha Security makes a comprehensive line of liquor bottle locks and other forms of bottle security. Would it really be that hard to use them on your product? Sometimes I want to go over and volunteer my services. I want to tell them to do us all a favor and increase their liquor bottle security.

I am sure that if I am suffering losses, so is everyone else in the neighborhood. One small step for them could make a huge impact for the rest of us.

It’s all about being aware!

Shrink, or inventory losses, is not just about stopping shoplifters using elaborate schemes and tactics. It isn’t even about expensive retail security programs. It’s really about awareness!

. Are you aware of what your top merchandise losses are? If you can’t rattle off a list of your top five or ten items, how will you ever stop the shrink from happening? Are your associates equally aware? They should be. Not only are they an extra set of eyes to alert you to potential issues, but they will have a better sense of ownership if they are involved as a solution to the problem.

Do you have retail anti-theft devices in use? There are reputable companies that do make affordable, cheap labels and cheap tags to use as deterrents in your stores. Make sure your associates are aware of how to properly respond to your EAS system going off. That awareness will help you reduce your shrink by sending a clear message to the criminal community that you and your associates are now aware.

Don’t cut Payroll, Cut Shrink instead!

It has long been said that payroll is the most controllable expense a store has. You have control over the wages spent, the hours worked, allowable overtime, and can increase and reduce as needed. Sounds sensible right?

Well, I would have to disagree. When companies are reducing their work force to bare bones standards, some retailers are dangerously only having one employee in a store at any given point in time. I think that is just setting someone up to be hurt, or worse.

Instead of cutting payroll, try cutting out your shrink. It is easier than you might think. Using cost efficient cheap labels and cheap tags for your retail security needs is almost guaranteed to reduce your inventory losses. Retail anti-theft devices are notoriously effective deterrents against theft.

Since most stores do not have any way to financially allow for an inventory loss, that dollar comes right off the bottom line. A significant reduction in shrink can make a huge impact in bringing those bottom line profits back up to par.

Don’t put your store and your employees at risk by reducing your payroll to the point where it is almost nonexistent. Reduce your shrink instead through retail security and retail anti-theft devices.

Are you paying enough attention to your Clothing Security?

It was in the news just the other day that a major retailer is shutting down more of its stores. This is the second wave in just a few months. When you walk through their stores, sometimes it just makes sense. Their clothes are often disorganized and that are lacking a wide selection of colors or sizes. Now, don’t get me wrong, some of their stores are immaculate. I just have to wonder, if they can’t keep their stores clean, do they pay enough attention to other aspects of their stores like retail clothing security? Maybe that is the reason why the company is loosing huge profits.

In my experience, I have seen stores make or break their profit margin just by how well they manage their inventory, and more specifically their inventory losses. Using cheap labels and cheap tags to enhance a store’s clothing security is one of the quickest financial solutions to reducing inventory losses. With such easy solutions, why not take a moment to incorporate retail anti-theft devices in your day-to-day operations before you are shutting your doors too.

Cutting Payroll? Don’t you have a backup plan???

The economy is struggling, that is a simple fact. Payrolls have been cut and employees are being asked to do more with and for less. Thieves however are very opportunistic and are thriving in this current economic environment. Most companies are not thinking about anti-shoplifting strategies nor are they contemplating adding retail theft prevention tools or any other means of security that might incur cost. Businesses with checkpoint systems already in place are in the best position to fend off this latest push by thieves to cause loss of assets.

Newer smaller to medium size businesses are not allocating funds to protect their bottom line, they are focusing on maximizing sales and slashing the budget at every turn. A Checkpoint security system gives a business an extra obstacle for thieves no matter how many employees are working the floor. The key is the fact that the business can utilize checkpoint security tags and Checkpoint  labels on every piece of merchandise if they so desire to protect their product. The checkpoint security tags are alarmed so if a shoplifter attempts to remove a product that has a tag on it the EAS alarm at the front of the store will sound loudly alerting the staff to a potential theft. Checkpoint systems are proven to deter theft and are ranked as one of the best retail theft prevention tools in the industry.

Payroll is the most controllable expense and many businesses are moving to save money by reducing payroll. Part of the budget discussion should be to discuss the best anti-shoplifting solutions as well. If a company decides to limit floor coverage they should invest part of that money into a checkpoint security system to aid in retail theft prevention. Checkpoint systems are not 100% full proof, nothing on the market is, however this tool can be a huge help to ensure theft does not contribute to any financial hurdles businesses are encountering.

Never assume, always do a Background Check

Most people never see what goes on behind the closed doors of prominent hotel chains. It is assumed that all business matters especially the business of employee background checks have been addressed in the most professional ways possible and that any issues one might see is a minor glitch which is handled expeditiously. Even with my background in Loss Prevention this was my mindset until I had a very good friend of mine open my eyes to the challenges his job at a very large hotel located in the center of a huge city. My friend had worked as an operations manager for a few prominent businesses in the city and was valued as a manager who could assess talent and manage a large amount of people to complete numerous tasks which led to the business running smoothly in an urban busy setting.

We were just enjoying some conversation after a delicious holiday dinner with our families when he decided to run his latest job by me along with an alarming employee issue that had been dropped in his lap. Robert, my friend, had been hired by a prominent hotel to be the Director of restaurant operations. Robert immediately went to work assessing his team’s talent and what he found was a human resource nightmare. Even though this hotel was a very large and successful it was a family owned business which placed family members in key positions without the experience or credentials to fulfill those positions. One position in particular was the VP of Human Resources. Robert could not understand why many key positions in his team were filled with people who lacked the experience to fulfill their jobs until he started reviewing the hotel’s pre-employment screening process.

The review of the pre-employment screening was the beginning of the proverbial rabbit hole. You merely filled out a basic job application and submitted a resume, one interview later you knew whether you were hired or not. There were no employee background checks of any type conducted for any position. Nobody checked references, criminal history or even Social Security validity.  At this point the horrified look on my face had Robert a bit concerned, I almost passed out when he told me they did not have a background check company on retainer.I was simply astounded that they did not conduct any type of employee background check. At this point Robert clued me into the fact that the VP of Human Resources was a member of the hotel owner’s family and did not possess the necessary skills to develop a proper human resource program, including background checks.

At this point I had to stop Robert and start educating him on the basics of employing a pre-employment screening strategy. I explained to him that if he did the homework and put together a solution that included a variety of background check experts to choose from that the VP of human resources would embrace the idea as her own. The VP wanted to do the right thing, she just did not have the experience nor the understanding to realize what needed to be done.

In the end Robert was able to sit down with several members of the owners family including the VP of Human Resources and communicate the importance of retaining a reputable background check company. The good thing was Robert came out of the meeting with his job still intact and a budget to obtain the help of background check experts. Now Robert’s welcomed challenge is to choose the best suited background check company for the hotel. As a follow up I also explained the importance of conducting criminal background checks that encompass all of the potential employees former addresses and that as a suggestion to run state wide criminal background checks to ensure all counties are covered within a state. It was one heck of a roller coaster ride for Robert but in the end he was able to bring the pre-employment screening problem to the forefront before anymore serious problems occurred.

How Are They Doing It?

Aisle after aisle, the rows of shelves are filled to the brim with bottles. I feel sorry sometimes for the stockperson who has to fill and organize those shelves. Just looking through the wine selection at the local supermarket is enough to make your eyes blur. They have a larger wine and liquor department than produce section.

Even more tedious than trying to keep the bottles lined up neatly with the front of the shelves, is the amount of time they diligently put into bottle security. They start with impeccable customer service. A friendly employee is always on hand to greet you and offer suggestions or wine parings. Sometimes they even have local sales reps in  to talk about their products.

They take liquor bottle security just as seriously as wine bottle security. Neat and organized shelves are just the beginning. I am sure if anyone takes a bottle off the shelf, someone in the store knows about it. Liquor bottle security also comes in the form of bottle locks.

You can tell they painstakingly go through every single shipment of liquor and ensure that each bottle has a liquor bottle lock on it before it goes to the sales floor.

I marvel at their commitment to making their store ready for the customer on every level. They truly understand how to succeed with liquor bottle security.

Clothing Security designed for Coat Theft

Winter coats are expensive. Shoppers know it, retailers know it, and most of all the shoplifters know it. Because of their high cost, coats can easily become a target for retail theft. From boosters to thieves of opportunity, coats are a quick option.

I have seen many instances where shoplifters come into the store and target coats, specifically those lacking clothing security tags and a clothing alarm. By using security tags on clothes and coats you can have a huge impact on winter shrink in your store. There is a wide variety of clothing security tags available to fit your needs, and the use of a hard tag can do wonders in deterring theft.

Sometimes the simple solution of placing security tags on clothes can solve your problems; other times you need to take more drastic measures. Alpha Security CableLoks are a great clothing alarm product that I have used to effectively deter and identify theft activity in my store. These devices have provided great clothing security for high theft merchandise above and beyond that of what a hard tag can do.

Alpha Security CableLoks can provide heightened clothing security to your merchandise by not only notifying you that someone has attempted to leave your store with unpaid merchandise, but can also provide an ongoing alarm on the device to alert you to the location of the merchandise once it  has left your store.

The Alpha Security CableLoks clothing alarm is easy to install and even easier to remove with an Alpha Key. I have had great success with very little training to get my team using this product. Simply run the cable through one of the arms of the coat or other clothing item you wish to secure and clip the cable back into the unit. Unlike hard tags, this clothing security device is noninvasive and does not penetrate the merchandise in any way, which is perfect for that high dollar merchandise you want to secure.

Why Do Loss Prevention Seminars have to be Boring?

The other day, I sat through a loss prevention seminar for a State license I hold. It was the worst hour of the week. I wish I could get it back. This guy just droned on and on in the most monotonous voice. His subject was interesting but that is little good when you are having to fight to stay awake.

When I teach a loss prevention workshop or host a loss prevention seminar I feel that it is my duty to deliver an interesting and engaging session. Of course, I have been providing low prevention training for a long time now and I know the tricks to get and keep people involved. Of course my subject matter helps. I talk about employee theft, shoplifting, vendor fraud and other interesting topics.

I like to bring the session to life with my experiences. I have investigated and put over 2300 employees in jail for theft so there are a few good stories there. Like the guy who stole watches from my employers store and then gave them to the rest of the employees as Christmas gifts, including the Manager. And he couldn’t figure out how we had caught him!

Loss prevention seminars take on a whole new aspect when you can relate these kinds of experiences to the group. Most have their own shoplifting and employee theft stories that they can relate to yours. Once that happens they put it together and begin to actually learn. With a loss prevention workshop we can make that happen. Of course the group has to be the right size.

No more boring loss prevention seminars, please!
