Employee theft Cases are like Onions…

I worked with a corporate investigator that used to say employee theft cases are always like peeling an onion. The further down you get, the more it starts to stink and the more layers start to unfold.

In my experience, he was right. Employee theft cases keep retail security personnel on their toes. Just one employee out of control can equate to thousands, sometimes even tens of thousands of dollars in losses and the cases always seem to dig deeper and deeper.

There is a way to help diminish employee theft. Use retail anti-shoplifting tools on your merchandise.

Retail anti-shoplifting tools like retail anti-theft devices, are better known as EAS labels and tags. They are designed to provide a multi layer of defense against losses.

These labels and tags are primarily designed to help eliminate and deter shoplifters, but also work well in deterring employees from stealing.

If an employee were to steal an item that causes an alarm to go off, every one around them will know. The employee has to come back and face the rest of the store, filled with people who know them.

A shoplifter’s greatest asset is anonymity. An employee who does not have the same tool is even more likely to get caught.

Anyone in your business can steal including LP Agents…

It isn’t something that we would ever want to admit too or acknowledge openly, but the truth is that there are some Loss Prevention Agents out there guilty of as much employee theft as any other employee.  The fact of the matter is we are human beings and as such are prone to the same moral lapses, financial pitfalls, or sociopathic tendencies as anyone else.  No human being is perfect, even those who try to put out the image that they are.

Just as with any other form of authority there needs to be a method of checks and balances to ensure that no one can try to take advantage of any opportunities.  Of all the tools available to provide these checks and balances the CCTV system is by far the greatest asset.  With a well implemented camera system any store can observe the sales floor as well as any offices in the building.  Giving employees, no matter their designation or level, as few places to covertly commit internal theft as possible allows for a greater reduction simply through deterrence.  However the threat of being seen isn’t enough.  LP agents and managers usually know where any and all cameras are currently active in your store which is why measures need to be taken to discreetly place covert units from time to time.  Utilizing these prudent tools is vital to guaranteeing that there is little to no chance for ANY of your employees to get away with an employee theft.

Branding is all about Uniformity

Everyone in the retail industry has a brand. It is how you and your stores look, think, act and convey you to the consumer. Billions of dollars are spent on company branding every year. These brands transcend beyond the company logo, right down to the very detail of displays of clothes and other accessories.

Clothing security should be just as much of an integral part of your company’s brand strategy. Your brand should show how to use anti-theft devices and where they will be put on the products.

Your brand should also place emphasis on the fact that you do use anti-theft devices to reduce your shrink. You can easily put up a sign on the doors or near fitting rooms that you electronically monitor your merchandise.

The placement of your devices can also play a role in letting your customers know that you are reducing your shrink risk through EAS. You can place these tags as prominently as you like or as discreetly as you want based on your marketing and brand strategy. Regardless of where you put them, cheap labels and cheap tags should be used on every piece every time in the same way. Branding is all about uniformity, your stores look like each other, you may have the same displays up, the same shopping bags, and the same receipt lay out so why wouldn’t you treat clothing security the same way.

Add clothing security to your branding and merchandising strategy today and prevent retail theft in your store every day.

I wish I thought of that…

There is a new show out on television that is all about hometown inventors. A couple of execs go out across the country talking to people who have created new kitchen gadgets and gizmos. It’s actually pretty interesting to see what people come up with in their spare time. It is also pretty amazing to see how much money people have dumped into making their inventions a reality. Talk about conviction! I guess if you are really going to make something work you have to invest the time and money into it to make it successful.

One of the other ways to make it a successful invention according to these show hosts is to make an item simple to use and simple to understand. Take a problem and find an easy fix for it.

That, in a nutshell, is why Alpha Security’s EASy Bottle liquor bottle locks are so successful. They take a problem – a need for bottle security- and then come up with a fast and effective solution.

The result is an easy fix- a liquor bottle lock that is a bottle cap pushed over the mouth of a bottle. It works two fold, first, to prevent the contents from being consumed while the cap is in place, second, to set off an alarm if the bottle is being stolen.

Simple yet effective, I wish I had thought of it!

Is your thief trying every excuse they can?

When you catch someone stealing clothes, they always try to talk their way out of it. I have found over the years that one of the more popular ways of doing this is to claim a need to use a restroom, much like children do when they don’t want to go to bed.

On occasion, it might be a real excuse, and it’s one that shouldn’t be ignored completely but more times than not it is an excuse to avoid punishment a little longer. If a shoplifter asks to use a bathroom, be accommodating, but also try to stall until the local authorities arrive (if you are prosecuting). They are much more knowledgeable about handling such situations.

When a shoplifter tries to steal items and isn’t able to get the anti -theft devices off, they might try to conceal them on their person. If the shoplifter goes into the privacy of a restroom stall, they will try to ditch those items and claim that you are wrong in apprehending them and even threaten legal action against you or your company.

Clothing security does not take into consideration the human element, so be careful, and be observant. Recover the merchandise first, and then allow use of a bathroom. After they are out of the stall (no need to violate their privacy inside the stall), make a quick check to ensure no other clothes or anti-theft devices were discarded.

Does it feel like you’re fighting a losing battle?

Over the years I have worked for a long list of retailers as a loss prevention investigator.  I have spent hours conducting investigations to apprehend shoplifters and dishonest employees for a wide variety of theft related crimes.  The main lesson I learned during this period was that anti-shoplifting initiatives only work if you focus on retail theft prevention.

Shoplifting is going to happen… it is an unfortunate part of being in the retail business.  Our company spent thousands of dollars hiring and training people to watch the cameras and physically detain shoplifters; however, in the end I’m absolutely certain that the key to retail theft prevention is deterrence through the use of anti-shoplifting devices.

I worked for a small company that did not have a checkpoint security system in place and it was overrun with shoplifters daily. It felt like we were constantly at war trying to keep merchandise in the store.

When the yearend shortage numbers rolled out we were appalled by the losses that we incurred despite our efforts.  It was decided that we needed to implement a checkpoint security system to help mitigate our losses.

The Checkpoint Security System sent a clear message to the shoplifters that retail theft prevention was taken seriously. Checkpoint security tags were placed on all of our merchandise and checkpoint systems were installed on the doors.  Once the checkpoint security tags were in place we started to see an increase in the number of items left in our fitting rooms because the shoplifters couldn’t remove the anti-shoplifting devices.

Did you get a thorough background check?

Background checks are important, but they should never be the only tool you use to determine if a candidate is a good fit for your business. Comprehensive pre-employment screening should include many aspects beyond just sending their information into a background check company. Criminal background checks, drug testing, reference checks, and an extensive interview process should all play a part in your pre-employment screening process. When you use a vast array of screening tools you will be able to find the best candidates to fit your needs that will be loyal and work hard for your company.

Criminal background checks will allow you to identify potential employees that have been convicted of a crime. From those results you can decide if the candidate is someone you wish to pursue or if you will decide to look elsewhere. This should not be where the screening stops.

Drug testing can help you to identify if the possible employee is involved in any illegal drug activity. Reference employee background checks will allow you to discover if the person is lying about their previous experience and will hopefully help you to get a good idea of the person’s character. The key here is asking the right questions of the right people. If the reference person that the potential employee gave you seems to be giving staged or fake answers, call back and ask to speak to another manager.

Lastly, the thing you can always count on is the interview process. Make this meeting count. Be sure to research the right questions to ask and how to effectively interview. Open ended questions can be your best friend; you would be surprised how much someone will open up with just a little probing. Using a background check company can tell you a lot about a potential employee, but it takes a lot more to make sure you are hiring the right people.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure…

My husband and I had the chance to walk through a new market store in our area over the weekend. We are trying to eat a bit healthier, so we jump at the chance to look at new grocery stores.

This one in particular does a lot with the local farmers for their produce and has locally made breads. They are a smaller venue than the traditional big box. I would think they are a step above a permanent farmers market.

One thing that did surprise me, as we walked around, was that they did sell bottles of wine. Now I know that they probably aren’t a big shrink store for alcohol, but there was not any type of wine bottle security to be seen.

I guess you really do have to know your market to determine whether or not you need any wine bottle security like liquor bottle locks. I would be more concerned as time goes by, that you might need them down the road. More than likely, they will wait until after they have a theft problem before they feel the need to address it.

If an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, the same holds true for wine bottle security. A small initial investment is potentially worth more than that same investment compounded by the incurred shrink losses.

Even Children’s clothing can go missing

When you work in soft line retail shrink used to not be a huge concern in children’s clothing. The main focus was on products like jewelry or leather coats, jeans and athletic shoes. Children’s clothes were never on any big watch list, until now.

I don’t know if it is because more people are out of work, or because kids clothes are getting more expensive, but it seems like our children’s department is suffering more and more every day. If you haven’t already, I would suggest starting to use clothing security tags on children’s clothes.

For the baby and toddler clothes, it would be easy to use checkpoint tags for clothing security. Since these items typically are not tried on in the store (like adult’s clothing) a hard tag would not impede the shopping experience in any way.

For bigger kid’s clothes, clothing security would be easy with a soft tag. The non-adhesive tags could be slid into a pocket. Soft tags can also be attached as a price tag or barcode along with a hard tag for extra protection.

There are multiple Checkpoint tags to choose from to facilitate proper tagging based on the type of clothing.

Visit the Loss Prevention Store to purchase Checkpoint Tags, a Clothing Alarm, Clothing Security or Clothing Security Tags to put Security Tags on Clothes and an Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system.

Do you know how to Pre-Screen our Future Employees?

As a management professional, I am constantly reminded that we live in a very litigious society. Even when we feel that we would be doing the right thing by standing up for ourselves, or our businesses. Often times we make the decision to err on the side of caution to avoid customer complaints, or even worse, a lawsuit.

This can ring especially true when it comes to new employee hiring practices. I have seen hiring managers afraid to not hire a candidate for fear of a discrimination lawsuit, I have also seen candidates hired, despite a gut feeling that there is something the manager is missing.

So what to do? How do you keep yourselves out of hot water, and still fill your open positions quickly and legally?

Take the Loss Prevention Workshop focused on pre employment screening. They will give you the loss prevention training you need to ask the right questions and to legally obtain the right answers. They can also show you how to read between the lines of a background check.

The best part about attending loss prevention seminars is, because you are with someone face to face, you have the ability to ask questions to make sure you can take away the most useful information.
