Time To Be Objective – Loss Prevention Seminars

Loss Prevention Seminars are a great way to gain perspective and to find someone who can remain objective when it comes to shoplifting and employee theft in your store.

It’s hard to keep an objective eye when you have one of your employees disrespecting you by lying and stealing from you. Let’s face it. As a small business owner, employee theft is just as much about your losses as it is the losses your business incurs.

Shoplifting is the same. It is easy to lose your objectivity when you and your business are being victimized by theft. That is why it can be critically important to find someone who has been able to retain their objectivity in the face of employee theft and shoplifting.

By attending a loss prevention workshop you gain access to a moderator who is not only objective, but is also a seasoned expert in their field. You can take their experiences and trials and errors and learn from them. Hopefully you will be able to take these lessons and apply them to your personal situations.

Loss prevention training will open your eyes to details or methods of theft that you may have been blinded to. Knowing these details will help you more fully recover your losses and prevent them from happening in the future.

Not Authorized – Checkpoint Tags

Authorized Checkpoint security tags are designed on a different standard of quality than other tags. One of the most significant differences is in the quality of construction. It might be enticing to buy knock off tags because they are less expensive than Checkpoint tags. What you might find out is that there is a reason why those tags are so cheap.

Checkpoint security tags are made to be a seamless piece of molded plastic that has the EAS tag imbedded within it. Part of the success of the tag is that the EAS component cannot be accessed and subsequently disabled.

When you have an unauthorized tag, the construction quality can vary greatly. Often the tag has a seam in it that can easily be pried open. It doesn’t take specialist equipment either. A screwdriver or even a small pocketknife can pry the tag apart revealing the inner contents. Once the tag is in two pieces, the EAS component can easily be discarded. Without the risk of sounding an alarm, your merchandise is wide open for the taking.

Retail theft prevention is based on consistency in order to stop shoplifting. If your anti-shoplifting tools are inferior and easily defeated, then your retail theft prevention is compromised. You will end up loosing more in merchandise than if you had spent the money on the quality Checkpoint tags from the beginning.

Out of this world – Background Checks

In the early days of my working life, I knew very little about loss prevention, security, or even basic background checks, much less that there were background check companies and background check experts that could handle the employee background checks for the employer. I was fresh out of high school and working in a small restaurant with a bakery.

There was a family consisting of a husband, his wife, and her brother that worked the early morning shift. After I was hired on, we ended up working several early mornings together.  We started to form a friendship of sorts.

They asked me to teach them some English, and I learned some Spanish from them. After several months, they did something I never expected.

They asked me to marry their brother.

It was then that I knew these were illegal immigrants. This marriage would allow the brother to stay in the country legally. They would even pay me cash to compensate me for my risk. They obviously had not had an employee background check.

I turned them down, but I never turned them in. It wasn’t until many years later that I realized the full extent of these actions. They were here illegally, and had to be using someone else’s social security number to be employed. It also meant that there probably hadn’t been any sort of pre employment screening including criminal background checks done by my employer that would have potentially caught their secret.

While I don’t think that these three would have ever stolen or embezzled from the company and risked their stay in this country, the bottom line is that they were here illegally. Consulting with a background check expert to handle the pre-employment screening conducted by my employer through a background check company that would have potentially caught their secret through the criminal background check process Background checks would have quickly discovered this oversight.

Analyze Your Reports – Clothing Security Tags

It should be no secret that you need a clothing alarm for clothing security to protect your merchandise. What you might not realize is that it is also not a secret as to which specific items need clothing security tags.

The first place is to start looking at your last inventory report. You are conducting inventories at least on a yearly basis right? If you aren’t, you need to start. How will you ever know that you have a problem if you don’t have any way to manage or quantify your inventory losses?

Taking inventory is the best way to track your inventory. You should compare the quantity of each item you purchased versus the quantity of those same items you actually have on hand. Be sure to adjust for any sales or returns made.

Whatever discrepancies you have is called shrink. Now that you know what your shrink is look at those specific items. Decide if these items are ones that are continuing to cause shrink issues? Were the losses on items that you no longer carry in your store?

If you have inventory items that you still carry that you are noticing losses of these are the ones that need security tags on clothes. Checkpoint tags should be applied to these high shrink items first.

A Fatal Error – Internal Theft

It’s hard enough to think that one of your own employees has been stealing from you. It’s even harder to think that often, employee theft involves either multiple employees or an employee working with someone outside the company like a friend, a relative, or even a vendor.

I remember an employee theft investigation where a cashier was ringing up her boyfriend. Underneath his cart was about $300 dollars in product that she did not charge him for. Because she did not want to draw attention to the items, she left them under the cart. Unfortunately for her, but lucky for us, she did not realize that the items had RF tags on them. When the boyfriend tried to leave, he set off the alarms at the door alerting everyone around to the situation.

I did some research as part of that internal theft case. The girlfriend had been passing off merchandise for several months. It was probably longer than that, but they had left a trail of paperwork that we could follow.

Some of the stolen goods were returned without a receipt so a merchandise credit was issued. Because it is an in store credit, we could track all of the purchases that card made.

Each time they used the merchandise card to pay for a transaction, we saw more merchandise being passed off at the register. They would then return that product and get a new merchandise store credit that we could track. And so the cycle was established.

But Officer, I Didn’t Steal it- Liquor Bottle Security

Liquor bottle security is not always about someone coming in and trying to shoplift a bottle. As it turns out, some people actually try to consume the alcohol on the premises. There are reported incidents of people trying to open bottles and pour the contents into other containers.

They may not take or steal the entire bottle, but these actions cause the same inventory and financial loss. I mean, who can convince the next customer to buy an open, half empty bottle?!

These losses can cause just as much damage as actual shoplifting or employee theft can. The difference is that the crime is easier to justify in the minds of the perpetrators. Just drinking the alcohol, is not as tangible as theft. Since they don’t actually leave a store with a stolen object (I.E Liquor or wine bottle) they don’t see it as stealing. That makes it harder to stop.

This is a prime example where EASy bottle by Alpha Security, or comparable bottle locks, would have prevented the losses from occurring. These offenders would have more than likely left the store without incident by not having access to the bottles’ contents.

Sending a crook down the street is about the best way to protect your assets. Bottle locks help to send the crooks packing.

Wasted Production – It is so difficult to prevent employee theft

As a retail manager, I have spent ample hours stuck in meetings and loss prevention training. All too often the presenter would shift through paperwork looking for answers to topics they were not fluent in. The “errs” and “umms” would be so distracting that by the time they actually started talking our brains would have wandered off to what the lunch menu for the day would be.

It was always unfortunate because there was a lot of good information that could be garnered from those meetings, if the presenter knew what they were doing. If your trainer looses their audience, you loose out on the information given in addition to the hours of misplaced productivity. As a Loss Prevention manager one always thinks of new ways to steal; it is part of the job to effectively prevent employee theft and shoplifting.  This makes for interesting discussions with fellow Loss Prevention staff.

Adult learning is not so complicated of a process. We need to be stimulated, and energized, and entertained to a certain degree. Too often presenters drone on and on. They do not watch their audience for cues to take a break. They are more concerned with pushing through the material than to make sure there is comprehension from their audience.

This is not the way to run a meeting. Loss Prevention Seminars should be informative and educational. It is a chance for everyone to understand how to be eyes and ears in the workplace. When unskilled presenters make poor attempts at giving Loss Prevention Training, it is the audience that suffers in the end.

Stop the Amateur Shoplifter – Retail Theft Prevention

Are you missing random quantities of merchandise? Ones that might not have any Checkpoint tags? Perhaps items that aren’t normally on your high shrink list? If you are, then you are probably being hit by an amateur shoplifter.

What is an amateur shoplifter?  They can be anyone who enters your store with the intent to steal. It can be a teenager on a dare, a grandmother on a fixed income, or even a mother with a small baby.

The use of Checkpoint Security tags probably would have been enough of a deterrent for most Checkpoint security tag, it would be stolen.

Amateurs are not hardened criminals. The last thing they want is to be caught. Using Checkpoint Systems to stop shoplifting of clothing, bags, and shoes greatly reduces the losses to this particular type of thief. They do not want to run the risk of exposure. Anti shoplifting devices are nearly impossible to remove, and these thieves know the alarm will sound if they try to leave with the merchandise. They know it its in their best interest to go to a different store and leave yours alone.

But it really is me – Background Checks

There was an interesting article in our local paper last week. One of our city commissioners had been sent a 1099 form from an employer in a different state. Her first thought was that it clearly was a mistake and a quick background check would clear the matter up.

How far from the truth that was.

She first contacted the company who sent her the 1099. As it turned out, this “employee” had been working there for about five years before they left. Since they had this social on file, there was not any other information they could identify.

In the process of her pre-employment screening, she had not consulted with a background check company or any background check experts to conduct criminal background checks and employee background checks.

The next step was to contact the credit bureaus. No suspicious or detrimental information had been recorded, but a flag was put on the accounts in case of any suspicious activity in the future. That was the good news.

The bad news was that in order to fix the taxes, she had to go through a rigorous process of proving who SHE was. She had to send every document she could showing her identity, as well as copies of her social security card and an affidavit stating who she was. The federal government was ok with the end result and she ahs successfully proven the 1099 and income is not hers.

As for the state revenue department, they still want their cut of this money. So they are not accepting this “proof” of stolen identity. As of this time a lawyer has been brought in to help clear up the matter.

No telling how many more hours and dollars will be spent to clear her name.

Consulting with a background check expert through a background check company to assist with criminal background checks and employee background checks can help ensure you are getting accurate information

This is another reason why background checks and pre employment screening are needed. There is often more damage than just making a bad hiring decision.

Only For Some – Clothing Security

Clothing security tags are the front line of defense to reducing shrink from theft. A visual deterrent that only needs to be applied once, they are efficient and cost effective for both big box retailers and the small business owner.

One of the questions I am asked regarding security tags on clothes is “What should I Tag?”

While the obvious decision would be to tag everything, that would end up being inefficient, expensive and unnecessary. Having too many clothing security tags is a distraction for you, your employees and mostly for your customers.

Too many tags can lead to improper deactivations and longer waits at the register to try and deactivate all of them. If a Checkpoint tag is not deactivated, by design it will sound a clothing alarm. If a tag is accidentally not deactivated, that same clothing alarm will go off. Too many alarms and both your employees and customers start to become immune to it.

There is also the added expense of too many tags. It is more cost efficient (both straight line expenses and return on investment) if you stick with just the top inventory shrink items.

You also need to factor in the time it will take to effectively tag your merchandise. Spending countless payroll hours on clothing security for items that are not a high risk is a waste of your resources.
