Easy To Use – Clothing Security

I am generally a very well organized person – definitely not a space cadet. I have a place for everything and everything in its place. I have To Do lists, Task lists, calendars, organizers, email reminders, etc. If you can name it, I have probably tried it at some point in my quest for organization.

Retail is a particularly challenging environment in which to achieve and maintain organization. In the course of going from my office (around three departments and up a flight of stairs to another group of offices), I can be stopped by three to thirty people, each one requiring something of me. If I don’t record this in my notebook, I will likely forget; and if I lose the notebook in which I wrote the list, well things can easily start to fall apart.

Beware the Swarm – Bottle Locks

Shoplifters and dishonest employees are hard to get rid of after a store has been deemed a safe haven for theft. Even after bottle security is in place, it could still take months or even years to fully eradicate the swarm of shoplifters that are now plaguing your liquor store.

What I didn’t Know – About being your own Loss Prevention Workshop

As a rookie LP agent, I had several manuals and study guides to memorize regarding employee theft and shoplifting before I was released to make apprehensions on my own. There were several months worth of loss prevention workshops that had to be completed prior to my sign off.

When I my loss prevention training was complete, I thought I had prepared for every shoplifting situation that I could come across.

I was itching to not only prove that I had learned everything I needed to from the manuals, but also prove I was just as good as the seasoned agents in my store were. The only thing left was to detain a few shoplifters with an experienced LP, and then I could go out on my own.

It didn’t take me long to figure out how lucky I was to have someone else with me on that first apprehension.

I wasn’t prepared for what my loss prevention seminars didn’t tell me. They didn’t tell me how my adrenaline would kick in wondering if there would be a fight, or if the shoplifter might pull a weapon on me. The manuals didn’t train me on the emotional reaction I would have.

My very first shoplifter was a woman putting merchandise under her six-month-old baby because she couldn’t afford the clothes. Sad. The emotional reactions to the stories shoplifters will give you, can never be trained or prepared for.

Sometimes they will make you feel compassion, sometimes anger. Having someone to help walk you through these untrainable moments is invaluable, and I am lucky that the seasoned agents were there for this step in my loss prevention training.

Tell-Tale Behaviors – Stopping Employee Theft

Most of the shrink in the average retail store is a result of employee theft – simply because employees have more access to company assets. Associates exhibit the same telling behaviors as shoplifters do when engaged in illegal activities. Close observation of both shoppers and employees is imperative in the ongoing battle to thwart “sticky fingers”.

Any sudden changes in an associate’s behavior should definitely warrant suspicion that internal theft is a distinct possibility. Other suspicious behaviors that should wave a red flag include an employee who seems overly friendly, complains about their financial situation or that they are underpaid, as well as an associate who has frequent visits from friends and family at the store.

I once encountered an associate while I was working as an LP professional who frequently complained to fellow coworkers and everyone who would listen that he was unhappy at home and couldn’t make ends meet. One day this same associate came into work with a high-end set of $200 headphones and a new MP3 player. He continued to complain about his financial situation. Within the same week, he was gloating about a designer belt and showing everyone the receipt for $400 cash.

I decided to conduct the employee theft investigation when this information triggered awareness of the contradiction of words and actions. We posted a covert CCTV (Closed Circuit Television) camera above the register in the department in which he usually worked.

We caught the associate red-handed stealing cash from the register after a few weeks of surveillance. He admitted making duplicate receipts for customers who were paying with large amounts of cash when questioned about the theft. He used those receipts to void the transactions later at his register and pocketed the money at the end of his shift.

Being observant of associate behaviors may lead to an employee theft discovery. Now, Not Later – Clothing Security

I frequently say to my toddler, “whenever you are ready”. It may seem sarcastic, but it helps me put things back into perspective by reminding me that when I am with her, I am on her time frame, not mine. It is one of the few times in life that I am challenged to slow down, not speed up.

“Whenever you are ready” is more likely to mean, “it should have been done 10 minutes ago” in my professional life. I put this same urgency into clothing security. When in doubt – Checkpoint Security tags

If you haven’t spent a lot of time with Checkpoint systems, you may not truly understand just how beneficial Checkpoint Security Tags can be to your shop. I know that until I worked in retail security for a major company, I had no idea just how invaluable they are to a successful business.

I used to think that the Checkpoint security tags just registered an alarm if a shoplifter was trying to steal an item. What I didn’t know was that there was more to them. These Checkpoint security tags are anti-shoplifting.

Not Worth The Wait – EASy Bottle

We have all been there. I am referring to those times that we go to a store just needing one or two last minute items, and end up getting stuck in a ridiculously long line with an even longer wait. This is the story of one of those times where having Alpha Security bottle locks or another form of bottle security, might have changed the entire outcome.

The lines were stretched way out from the registers. You could see the people were restless, one man in particular. He kept stepping out of the line to see how many people were in front of him. He would crane his neck to see if any of the other registers were shorter. When he saw that they weren’t he would step back in line. After a few minutes though, I am sure it felt like forever to him, he threw his hands up in the air and yelled this is ridiculous. He then stepped out of line for the last time and started walking out of the store.

For most people, we would have left the merchandise behind, but not him.

Maybe it was because he felt it was owed to him because he had to wait. Perhaps it was because we didn’t use the EASy Bottle for our in store bottle security. Maybe he was simply frustrated and forgot that he still had bottles of our liquor in his hands.

Keeping Up With the Crowd – Alpha 3 Alarm

I should begin by saying that our primary goal is always to recover the stolen merchandise. Of course we would really rather prevent shoplifting before it ever happens, but that’s another story.

Given the choice between recovering our product and apprehending and arresting a shoplifter, we will always get our product back first. It is purely a financial decision – we want to recover our financial loss. It was worse before we started using Alpha Security for our retail anti-theft devices.

We started to use Alpha 3 Alarm for the simple reason that it is easier to track down our merchandise. When a shoplifter steals an item, we have to wait until he exits our store before we can apprehend. Unfortunately, we now have to contend with all of the mall shoppers. If the shoplifter starts to run, they can easily get lost in the crowd. Most retail anti-theft devices only set off the alarm at the door, but nothing further
