Checkpoint & A Trained Staff

Although it has become a cliché, knowledge really is power. Having a knowledgeable staff will significantly reduce your losses with the help of a Checkpoint security system . One of the main reasons for false alarms is that a cashier does not deactivate the checkpoint labels or forgets to remove the checkpoint security tags from the item being purchased.

I am sure that it has happened to you a time or two. You are purchasing something from your local hardware store or some one-stop-shop and after the purchase is complete you try to walk out the door. What happens? You alarm the system that is designed to stop shoplifters. But you are not a shoplifter. Now you have to wait for someone to check the items that you legitimately purchased or even worse a cashier that didn’t even scan the items tells you to go ahead and leave.

When this occurs it makes both the customer and employee lose faith in the system and its ability to stop shoplifting . All that is needed to prevent this from occurring in your store is a knowledgeable staff. If the employees understand how the Checkpoint security system works, then they will be more inclined to use it properly because no one wants to make a customer feel like a thief when they have done nothing wrong.

One of the main ways too keep this from occurring is consistency. Set a standard for where and how Checkpoint security tags should be placed. This will help cashiers know where to look to remove hard tags and ensure that soft tags are deactivated upon purchase. Also, it will improve the speed in which employees are able to tag merchandise because it will become repetition and not something new or different every time they are tasked with this job. (To be continued…)

Checkpoint Systems Label and Tag Placement

Just as it is important to have Checkpoint labels for your store, it is equally important to know where to place your Checkpoint labels on the merchandise. If you are using soft Checkpoint tags to help control loss then here are a few things you will need to know.

First, the Checkpoint tags are tuned to alarm your Checkpoint security system using radio frequency. This means that when you place a Checkpoint labels on merchandise, you will want to avoid metal surfaces. Metal will hinder the effectiveness of your label, if the two are placed directly against each other.

Second, your Checkpoint tags should be placed on a flat surface. When locating a security tag on an item of merchandise, you should look for a place that is flat. The more the label bends or curves the less strength it will have when it passes through the detection field.

Third, keep in mind that you are going to be deactivating your Checkpoint labels when your merchandise is purchased. The easiest way to ensure that the label will be deactivated is to place the label near the barcode. The reason this is a good location is because the barcode will pass across the scanner and within the range of the deactivation field. It also requires no extra movements or time from your cashier’s routine, which will keep production at the high standard you have already set. This will also prevent a work interruption because of a false alarm that could have been prevented by the proper placement of your security tag.

Having the knowledge of where to place your security labels will help to ensure that your Checkpoint security system is an effective tool in preventing loss.

Time to Stop Shoplifting at Your Store

How can a storeowner or manager reduce or even stop shoplifting at his business?  Sometimes it seems like a losing battle at inventory time and there is a large unexplained inventory shortage.  The customers seem to be saying, “If it’s not nailed down, it’s mine.  If it is nailed down, I’ll pry it loose.”

The it’s time to take a look around and see what measures can be taken to stop shoplifting once and for all (or at least slow it down.)  As much as many storeowners would like to lock all shoplifters in prison and throw away the key, prevention is the more cost effective remedy.  Make them go somewhere else, like to your competitor, and let him deal with them.

When your potential shoplifter comes into the store, does staff that look him in the eye and say hello greet him?  Do they frequently ask him if he needs any help?  Does he see retail anti theft devices such as a Checkpoint Security System designed to stop shoplifting at the entrance?  Is vulnerable and desirable merchandise protected with Checkpoint security tags that will activate an audible alarm as it leaves the building without being paid for?

Are salespeople strategically located to be able to observe all areas of the sales floor at all times?  Is there adequate staff assigned and in place at vulnerable times like opening and closing?

Shoplifters don’t want to be noticed and they don’t want to be caught.  Reduce your risk by training staff, reducing target opportunity, and inviting shoplifters out of your store through visible prevention measures.

The battle to reduce or stop shoplifting can be won, but it takes a sustained and broad effort.

Checkpoint Security Systems & Alpha Hard Tags Anti Shoplifting Solutions

Alpha High Theft Solutions, which is a Checkpoint Security Systems company, has an incredible anti shoplifting offering in the Checkpoint hard tag world. Alphas hard tag construction is far superior to anything else on the market. These hard tags are meant to last and show little wear.

Fashion2 Hard Tag – This tag is awesome! Only 2.75 inches long by 0.5 inches high and wide it is one of the smallest on the market. The pickup is still as sensitive as most stores need. It is a tag that will complement stores merchandise by staying out of the way. Its compact size does not allow for a flex string hole. It will accept standard pins. The seams are real solid. Use the Alpha Fashion2 on shoes and small items such as coin purses. The Fashion2 is beige in color.

Fashion2 Accessory Hard Tag – This takes the fashion2 into another world. It has an integrated 3-inch cable. It is used the same way you would use a traditional Checkpoint Security Systems mini hard tag and flex string. The big differences are that the cable is part of the hard tag and does not get separated easily. AND this is a very robust aircraft style cable. It is three times the thickness of a flex string and is clear vinyl coated. The Fashion2 Accessory Hard Tag cable also comes in 9-inch lengths.

Eyewear Tag – Small and light. The Eyewear Tag clamps down on the stems of prescription eyewear or sunglasses. The Eyewear Tag requires a special tool to remove it at the POS. Anti shoplifting in the eyewear arena is a tricky issue. Bulk and weight can be a problem with today’s lightweight frames. This new tag will resolve both of those issues.

NEW Ink Tag – This is a real departure for ink tags. This tag has the 8.2 MHz hard tag built into it. The red and yellow glass ink vials are set deep inside the tag. The clearly written warnings to shoplifters are printed directly on the ink tag, which precludes you from having to use a separate warning label as before. The pin is a very different concept. The pin back is clear plastic and the same size as the ink tag (50 mm) wide. This is a very compact, stout ink tag. Construction is what you would expect from Alpha High Shrink Solutions and Checkpoint Security Systems.

The Best Way to Stop Shoplifting in Atlanta, Georgia

The Best Way to Stop Shoplifting in Atlanta, Georgia

Actually, there is no one best way to stop shoplifting in Atlanta or anywhere else.  Whenever merchandise is put on display there will be shoplifters.

The best approach is to use a combination of anti shoplifting methods that are customized for your location, merchandise mix, and customer base.  Although shoplifting is widespread, there are groups and types of merchandise that require extra attention.

Some of the more common retail theft prevention strategies are:

·    Plainclothes store detectives.  Great for large businesses with the budget to support them, word gets out fast that shoplifters are being arrested frequently.
·    CCTV.  A good deterrent, but much more useful if there is staff available to watch.  Added value to disprove slip and fall claims.
·    Uniformed Police or Security Guards.  Again a budget buster, but necessary in some areas where violence is a threat.  More of a robbery deterrent.
·    Signs that indicate shoplifters will be prosecuted.  May prevent some impulse thieves, may be a turn-off to some legitimate shoppers.
·    Locking merchandise in display cabinets.  Pretty secure, but will it hurt sales, or take too much time to lock and unlock?
·    Arrangement of merchandise.  Keep high theft items near a wrap stand, raise the cashier area for better viewing, and eliminate hidden areas.  This is a low cost avenue to reduce theft.
·    Training staff in anti shoplifting policies and procedures?  Do they no how to act or react if they see or suspect a shoplifter in your store?  Another low cost high value activity.
·    Increase staffing when shoplifters are likely to hit.  Opening, closing, and after school are prime times.
·    Staff awareness/customer service.  Every customer should be greeted soon after entering the store, so they are aware that someone knows they are there.
·    Retail anti theft devices such as Checkpoint Security Systems. Checkpoint Security Systems are designed to detect merchandise that has active Checkpoint Security Tags attached and emit an alarm.

The store owner who wants to reduce or stop shoplifting at his place of business, should consider combining several of the methods that apply to his situation.

Checkpoint Security Tags…The Secret Weapon

A lot has been written about anti shoplifting and retail anti theft devices. But the most versatile tool in this war is Checkpoint security tags. Unlike acousto magnetic labels, which are about the size, shape and thickness of a piece of “chicklet” gum the Checkpoint labels are paper-thin.

They come in so many varieties that it is hard to keep up with them. Checkpoint security tags can be white, black, clear which allows a packages barcode to show through. They can be printed on with your own printed with barcodes, logos, pricing information and more. You can also stick your own label over the top of them.

As far as size, Checkpoint labels have a wide range of sizes. This ranges from the postage stamp size to a 1.5” x 1.5” size. And there are many in between. For example the very popular 710 label is 1.3” x 1.4”. There are two sizes of round labels and they fit very well on the bottom of bottles such as medicines. They also work very well on the bottom of small square boxes. The round shape means that the corners of a label do not hang over the edges.

Another great series of Checkpoint security tags is the 615. The 615-barcode label has not only a fake barcode but also a small box printed on it that allows another sticker to be applied such as a logo or price tag. This all goes to hiding the intent of the Checkpoint labels.

And, of course, in the arsenal of retail anti theft devices is the Checkpoint systems themselves. Checkpoint Systems latest tool is the Evolve system. As anti shoplifting goes this is the top of the pile. Evolve has so many features packed into it I will need to write a separate blog for that. But for now consider the following Evolve features: superior detection with new revolutionary electronics, people counting, alarm detection that can tell if a customer is entering or leaving the store.

Checkpoint Systems are a Shoplifter’s Nightmare in Atlanta, Georgia

Checkpoint Systems are a Shoplifter’s Nightmare in Atlanta, Georgia

What does a shopper think when he enters a retail store that has a functioning Checkpoint Security System at the entrance to the store?  Does she think that shoplifting must be running rampant in the area, or that the use of Checkpoint Systems shows a concern for keeping prices low and theft by customers under control?

The sad fact is that shoplifters are everywhere a piece of merchandise is put on display, from the swankiest boutique to the corner convenience store.  The statistics are out there; retailers lose a huge amount of merchandise to thieves, which translates into a loss of profit, meaning higher prices for consumers.

So the addition of Checkpoint Systems is generally a good decision for a retailer to make.  There is no inconvenience to the legitimate customer, and it not only alerts employees when a piece of merchandise protected by checkpoint security tags exits the premises, it also serves as deterrent to the potential shoplifter.

How does it accomplish this?  First, suppose that a customer intends to go into a store for the purpose of stealing several items of merchandise.  When he approaches a store protected by an anti shoplifting device such as a Checkpoint Security System, his first thought is to find a softer target, one that has no such retail anti theft devices.  Like a speeder who knows where the traffic cop sits, the shoplifter will avoid places where he knows he might be caught.

But what about the casual shoplifter, one who impulsively steals merchandise simply because the opportunity arises?  The thought of the Checkpoint Security System standing silently at the exit will probably affect that person’s decision, and stop him from taking an unnecessary risk.

In addition to deterring the hard-core shoplifter, the Checkpoint System gives the impulse shoplifter second thoughts.

Checkpoint Security Systems and the retailer

Checkpoint security systems are not your run of the mill systems. Sure, there are many systems out there that claim to provide the same level of security, service and protection. However, few can match the quality and service provided by checkpoint security systems .

What is the benefit of having a checkpoint security system ? For starters, it gives the amateur shoplifter that ability to decide “Never mind, I won’t steal this merchandise today”. Checkpoint security systems work by providing a visual presence, much like a uniformed security guard standing at the front of your store. The would-be shoplifter see’s the inability to exit the store without being noticed, so they give up. Also, look at your merchandise.

In the efforts to help stop shoplifting, retail anti theft devices are affixed to several type of merchandise. Now, when the average shoplifter enters your store, he see’s these retail anti theft devices and decides to not take merchandise. All shoplifters want privacy. They want to be able to get in and out of your store quietly, without being detected. A Checkpoint security system takes away that privacy.

Retailers worldwide are always looking for the solution to stop shoplifting. Can shoplifting be stopped? The jury is still out on that one. For now, focus on reducing the instances of shoplifting and protect your stores, merchandise and employees.

Employees? Did I forget to mention that a Checkpoint security system can help keep honest people honest? Sure, if an employee knows that he must remove retail anti theft devices or has to try and take off checkpoint security tags to defeat the checkpoint systems , he/she certainly will think twice about it.

All in all, keeping your store safe and easy to shop will not only boost your profits but will give your employees a sense that you care. If you care, they will care. If you haven’t already, develop a plan to help stop shoplifting in your stores.
