What you can’t see

I had a shoplifting apprehension the other day. We thought it was a pretty routine case. A male walked into the men’s wear department and picked up a shirt. He headed into the fitting room, so we sent an employee in to see if he needed any help.

After a few min, the male came back out of the fitting room with the shirt. He then walked into a far corner of the store. We watched as he took the shirt off the hanger, rolled it up tightly, and stuck it under his arm so no one would see it.

As he was leaving the store, the clothing alarm went off. At the time I didn’t think anything of it. We knew he hadn’t paid for the shirt at a register, so there was bound to be a clothing security tag left on it.

After we got him back into our office for processing, I picked up the shirt to catalogue the item number and description. I looked for the price tag to get the information, and as I turned the shirt around in my hand, it struck me that the shirt didn’t have a Checkpoint tag on it.

I then turned my attention to the suspect who was adamant about going to the bathroom. As it turned out, he had stuffed a pair of jeans into his jacket. They had a checkpoint tag which set the clothing alarm off.

Without the tag, we never would have known about the jeans he had stolen.

Watch Where You Put That Thing

When you are using clothing security tags to protect your clothing inventory, it is necessary to find a consistent and customer friendly place to attach them. When I conduct my audits, I have seen that some stores do not do a very good job with their consistency. As a result, their clothing security is less than stellar.

One of the key points of good clothing security is to eliminate false clothing alarms. If the alarm is registering constantly, it becomes about as effective as hearing a car alarm in a parking lot. When was the last time anyone took those seriously?

If you put your security tags on clothes in the same place each and every time, then you cashiers all know when and where to look for them. Often the clothing alarms that I respond to have a tag in the improper place.

When we push our cashiers for fast and friendly check outs, we need to understand that if a tag isn’t where it is supposed to be, they rarely will take the time to search the entire garment just to see if there is possibly a tag on there.

By having one set place for security tags on clothes to be attached, you eliminate the guesswork for a cashier. You also reduce the amount of false alarms, and unhappy customers who have been delayed and embarrassed by that same alarm.

Go Ahead, Put It On Display

When someone wants to purchase an item, they want to see it. They want to put their hands on it and test it out. While that is a good thing for a consumer to want, not every customer is respectful in how they inspect their potential purchase.

I see slews of open packaging around my stores from customers who insist on opening up a box to look at an item they potentially want to purchase. Even when a display is available, they have a real need to open the box.

Most of them do it out of curiosity to really “see” their item. They are also worried that they need to inspect an item for damages. Not realizing how big of a mess they will make when they start to undo tape and cardboard and Styrofoam, and user manuals. The list goes on.

Depending on how well it is packed, some customers give it up as a bad job long before they even get to the merchandise inside. All to often, the irony hits as they look for damages, they end up breaking or dropping the items trying to get it unpacked.

When you use a spider wrap you are doing more for your inventory than just preventing shoplifting. You are helping to facilitate damage reduction through proper customer service.

This retail anti theft device forces a customer to an associate for help. The Spider Wrap can be undone at any register, so you associates can carefully open boxes to look for damages without causing more of them.

Go ahead and put your products on display. Spider Wraps will keep your displays usable and your boxes damage free.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Earth Day just passed, and with it all of the handy tips and lists of how we can each do our part to save the planet. One by one they rolled out their top five or ten do’s and don’ts to protect the environment. As we look to reduce our shrink, we can use anti theft devices as part of a green retail security plan to compliment our anti shoplifting tactics.

EAS (Electronic Article Surveillance) hard tags are a wonderful eco-friendly device. Even though the hard tags are made of plastic (which is generally not an environmentally friendly choice) they are still a green solution.

The main reason: EAS hard tags are reusable. This handy little anti theft device can be used over and over again. The tags go on the product before they are put on display for sale. At the wrap stands, your cashiers remove the tags.

The easiest way to recycle them is to set up two separate bins. Put the tags in one and the pins in another. Then you simply take the full bins back to your receiving area to be reattached onto the incoming merchandise.

Don’t let the “What Ifs” Slow You Down

Any time I have ever worked on an employee theft investigation, there is always a series of “What Ifs” to go through. What if we had better controls in place? What if we hadn’t trusted them with the keys? What if we had noticed / paid attention to their personal problems? The list can go on and on.

It would be easy to let all those little what ifs slow you down. I know my store managers have a harder time with them because they take cases of employee theft personally. I tend to look at it as an unfortunate reality of the retail industry.

It is hard to get other managers and owners to become aware that statistically 2% of employees are stealing at any given point in time. Most managers, and especially small business owners have a hard time believing that an employee could be stealing from them.

If you have put your heart and soul and often your personal finances on the line as a small business owner, you tend to imagine that all of your employees (that you personally hired) are doing the same.

When I am called in for cases that revolve around high inventory costs, one of the last things an owner expects to hear is that I need to start an employee theft investigation.

When they see the end results, they are in shock and start to second-guess themselves with what ifs. While there are ways to prevent employee theft, sometimes you just have to realize that they would have found a way to steal, and it is time to move on.

Clothing Security: The Key to Profits

Throughout my years of being a Loss Prevention Officer, I came to the realization that anti-theft devices placed properly on clothes can save a lot of headache, worry, and most of all money. If your main source of sales come from softlines (i.e. clothes), profitability and clothing security go hand in hand.

A large part of preventing as much loss as possible is deterring theft. Deterring theft is an inexpensive tactic that all business should take seriously. If you are a thief what would you rather steal: A stack of jeans with anti-theft devices in place? Or a stack of jeans that are un-protected just asking to be stolen? Stores without no loss prevention or minimal loss prevention staffing must employ deterrence, clothing security, and customer service tactics in order to prevent as much shrink/loss as possible.

Visual deterrents are the best tools for this. As stated earlier, these tactics are very inexpensive. Cheap tags that clip onto clothing can come in all sorts of sizes and shapes to fit the needs of your business. These cheap tags will not damage the merchandise either, so there is no need for worrying about damaging your clothes. Cheap labels are a nice compliment for the tags and anti-theft devices in acting as a further visual deterrent for any potential shoplifters. Cheap labels warn would-be thieves that the merchandise is protected, and any type of theft will be detected.

Anything else?

When you look at clothing security for your clothes, chances are good that you will probably not use anti theft devices on every single piece of your inventory. Most retailers spend their time and efforts tagging over a certain price point, or product group, depending upon their shrink results and trends.

That doesn’t mean that you will never find someone stealing an item just because it did not have any tags. I had a recent shoplifting instance where the shoplifter stole a shirt that did not have a tag.

What was more important, was that we missed this suspect stealing a pair of jeans also. When they went out the door with the merchandise, the alarm went off. It wasn’t until later on, in our office, that we discovered our oversight.

The shirt we saw him take did not have a sensor tag on it that would have set off the alarm. We realized that he had to have something else; another piece of our clothing that did have a tag on it.

With out those tags, we never would have recovered the stolen jeans.

Bottle Locks Deter Shoplifters

In my experience, it’s no secret that thieves will go for the most expensive item on the shelf. This is even truer if your business sells alcohol. The more expensive an item is, the more the thief can resell it for and profit (at a hefty loss to you). Unfortunately for shoplifters, installing bottle locks on wine and spirits can stop a thief with ease. The last thing any shoplifter wants is to draw attention to themselves. Utilizing good bottle security throughout your store can make a thief think twice. Once they try to take the product out the doors, the bottle lock alarms with your Checkpoint System which will grab people’s attention. That is bad news for any thief and something they might think twice about before picking up anything with bottle security on it.

Not only does Alpha Security have you covered from theft, EASy Bottle can also prevent potential thieves from sampling your product while in the store. The amount of loss you can incur from damaged bottles can add up quickly. No customer will want to buy any wine or spirit that has been opened or damaged. With the EASy bottle from Alpha Security, customers can have a piece of mind knowing that when they take their beverage to the register nobody has tampered with it.

Alpha Security also has a line of liquor bottle security that fits the needs of a wide range of spirits. Both the Crystal Guard and EASy Guarde allows for maximum effectiveness with less disturbance to the aesthetics of the product. With the variety of liquor bottle security available by Alpha Security, it has never been easier to protect your business.

Get that grill fired up

It is time to make your plans for 4th of July weekend. Like all good red-blooded American holidays, we will eagerly await backyard BBQs, picnics in the park, swimming, finishing some to-dos, and of course scouring the best sales in the area.

That also means that the stores will be full of shoplifters eagerly awaiting the distractions around them, so that they may conceal their criminal activities. One of the best preparations you can do is to make sure your anti theft devices are in place now and through the start of 4th of July weekend.

Waiting until the Friday before to do some auditing and then hoping they are correct will be too late. Your stores will be (hopefully) way to busy to deal with preparations of this kind.

Plan ahead so that you and your staff can actually enjoy the holiday shoppers knowing that your inventory is secure and your anti shoplifting practices are ready to go.

When you finally get to go home to your own celebrations, rest and relax knowing your preparations paid off.

A diamond in the rough

Have you ever gone to a store because you saw an ad for an item that was such a great deal that you couldn’t resist not going to check it out? While I try to keep my impulse shopping to a minimum, I can reluctantly say that on a rare occasion, I have been swayed.

Of course it always seems like this great sale is in the most inopportune place imaginable. I have convinced myself that driving for 30 min to the store across town to get that great bargain will be will worth the extra hassle.

After I have gotten there, I have often been severely disappointed in the inferior quality of the item. Sometimes, you really do just get what you pay for.

Other times, I have been so impressed with the sale that I can’t help but to rave about what a great find it was! It makes the drive and the time invested all worthwhile.

Cheap tags and cheap labels are the same way. Sometimes you find out that they are really just a cheap foreign made product not worth the time. Others like these cheap tags and cheap labels make it all worthwhile. They really are your diamond in the rough.
