Hey, I found it!

I am always loosing my keys and my phone. I had even hired an assistant manager one time and explained to him on his first day at work was to make sure that I always had my phone and keys before leaving the office. He laughed, until five minutes later when I couldn’t find my phone.

My friends know I am a lost cause. They often joke about getting me one of those remotes that you can attach an alarm on to your personal effects. That way you can just let your lost items send off a distress signal to help you locate them.

I think that is why I like the 3 Alarm products for retail anti theft devices. The 3 Alarm will emit an audible alarm for ten minutes after a stolen product has passed through the store’s doorway.

It gives you time to find your item. If you have a shoplifter stealing an item, they will try to run out the doors. Once the 3 Alarm activates, and they realize it won’t stop; the shoplifter will realistically drop the item.

Even if they take the item with while they are running, ten minutes is ample time to find out where the item was discarded. You may not always be able to prevent shoplifting from happening, but you will always have a shot at recovering the merchandise with a 3 Alarm retail anti theft device.

Prosecuting a minor

I hate it when kids steal. There is no good scenario for anyone under the age of 18 to be caught shoplifting. To start with, I firmly believe in the innocence of a child, even if that child is ready to graduate from high school and is almost an adult. Shoplifting turns into much more serious issues if undetected.

Retail security is primarily designed for adults who knowingly violate the laws and understand the gravity of their consequences. Retail anti theft devices work best with adults because they know what these anti shoplifting tools are for.

For small children, EAS tags don’t work because they don’t know what they do. Most children, up to a certain age, may know that it is wrong to take something that doesn’t belong to them, but aren’t fully aware of the meaning of shoplifting.

Some small children (under five) may not even know that it is wrong.

It’s the older, teenage crowd that shoplifts out of a dare, peer pressure, or for fun. They may think it is all a joke because they think they have the get out of jail free card until they turn 18. The good thing about anti shoplifting devices, however, is that it only takes one time of trying to take something that doesn’t belong to them for them to learn what these devices do.

How about a hot dog?

I have no doubt that the relationship started out with the simple question of “how about a hot dog?”

Like all unfortunate circumstances what started out as a simple working relationship between a hot dog vendor in our parking lot and a store employee quickly went south.

The employee would go out on his lunch breaks and grab a bite to eat and a little small talk with the vendor. Over time they got to know each other a little bit better and would talk about families and how their workdays were going.

Eventually the vendor would give out some free food to this employee as their relationship turned to friendship.

It wasn’t long after that the vendor started to talk about getting some things for free back from the employee. This was the beginning of a very serious case of employee theft.

It started out small enough, the employee passed off some screws and adhesive to help the vendor fix something broken in his hot dog cart. Over the next few months, the employee theft grew to include some power tools and other expensive store items.

When we conducted the interview, the employee stated how he never intended to be caught up in an employee theft situation. He was feeling obligated to his new friend to help him out and the items started to get out of control with cost and frequency.

A small part of the employee was glad he had been caught because he now had a way out of the situation.

The Bathroom Scam

When you catch someone stealing clothes, they always try to talk their way out of it. I have found over the years that one of the more popular ways is to claim a need to use a restroom.

On occasion, it might be a real excuse, and it’s one that shouldn’t be ignored completely. If a shoplifter asks to use a bathroom, be accommodating, but also try to stall until the local authorities arrive (if you are prosecuting). They are much more knowledgeable about handling such situations.

When a shoplifter tries to steal items and isn’t able to get the anti theft devices off, they might try to conceal them on their person. If the shoplifter goes into the privacy of a restroom stall, they will try to ditch those items and claim that you are wrong in apprehending them.

Clothing security does not take into consideration the human element, so be careful, and be observant. Recover the merchandise first, and then allow use of a bathroom. After they are out of the stall (no need to violate their privacy inside the stall), make a quick check to ensure no other clothes were discarded.

The control process

The control process is a four-step process that can be used by any of the various levels in an organization to ensure that you are producing on all levels. The nice part is that anyone can use the control process. By setting this up, even your low totem- hourly employees have an avenue to become more engaged and take ownership in your store.

You also have the ability to determine if something is working, like the new bottle lock you just started using for your bottle security.

Step one: set the performance standard. Your new bottle locks should not interfere with your daily operations, but should still reduce and prevent inventory shrink.

Step two: measure the performance. Bottle locks should only take a fraction of your stocking time to apply. You should start to see an immediate reduction in theft.

Step three: evaluate performance. Time your employees to see how long the bottle locks are taking to apply. Can you quantify how much less product you are ordering to compensate from your inventory losses?

Step four: Take corrective action. If the bottle lock is taking too long, find out why. Should you do additional training with your employees, or are they dawdling to get the job done. There should be evidence in your product receipts after the first few months that your inventory costs are coming back in line as a result of your increased bottle security.

Is Management Creating Employee Theft?

Internal theft also known as employee theft causes close to fifty percent of all retail business loss. In thirty years of conducting employee theft investigations I am still shocked by how poor a job most businesses do in common sense prevention. For example I conducted an investigation where $5000 in forged business checks were cashed. It turned out that the stock of checks was unsecure in an office supply room. The janitor’s stole 20 checks from the middle of the stack, waited a while and then began to cash them. These checks should have been secured in a locked cabinet with strict controlled access. The checks should be logged out and issued to the person that processes them.

We drop our guard because it is “more difficult” to do it the right way. You prevent employee theft by doing it the “right way” not the easy way. The key is “prevention”. Another excuse we say is, “Oh I trust that person, they would never do that”. Those words get more business people in trouble. When a management person says that, they are basically saying that they have no business common sense.

Another case I worked on involved employees that stole hundreds of thousands of dollars in product from a warehouse they worked in. They had keys to the warehouse that contained millions of dollars of merchandise. The alarm system was not reporting when the doors were being open and closed. So coming back at night and loading up a truck was not a problem.

Internal theft or employee theft lurks around every corner. You have to be actively watching for it to prevent it. Internal theft will not go away or stop on its own. In fact it will get worse. Get your policy manual off the shelf, dust it off, update it and make sure people understand that this is your companies “business bible”, live it, enforce it! This doesn’t mean that it never changes. As your business changes your policy and procedures should change. Learn this and more in our Loss Prevention Seminar and Loss Prevention Workshop.

Value Point Plus

Soft EAS tags (EAS Labels) are great. They are simple to use, versatile in their applications, and easy to apply right where you need them. As far as anti theft devices go, these are pretty top notch. The only thing better than a good label is a cheap label.

The value point plus line of cheap labels provides that same versatility and quality that you want out of a name brand anti theft device, while keeping their prices low. Another great point is that they are compatible with your existing Checkpoint system.

The value point plus soft labels work with your thermal printer to help mesh these labels into your stores visual standards. You can print on them bar codes, or pricing, company logos, or you can just leave them blank.

The labels will adhere to a wide range of textures and materials, or they can be left on their backing if you wanted to slide them into a pocket of a purse or wallet, for example.

Value point plus means that you get the VALUE of an inexpensive label PLUS the rest of the features to provide retail security for your products.

The response

Do you know how to respond to an alarm going off in your store? If you are using a Checkpoint system for your clothing security, you probably already do. The next question is do your employees know?

Chances are, they may not. There is an element of confrontation involved when you respond to an alarm. It is not the same type confrontation that a salesperson selling clothes is using to approach a customer.

You might find that one of the reasons your alarms are going off unattended, is that your employees simply are not comfortable with that confrontation. They are probably unsure of what to say, and unsure of how the customer is going to react.

The best way to handle this is to take a copy f your company policies and run through the response script with your employees. Give them a chance to approach you acting as a customer. Give them some real life examples of what to expect. I’ll bet your alarm responses start to go up after this training.

Free Stuff

I absolutely love getting free samples in the mail. What a great way to try out a product that you might otherwise be unfamiliar with. I have actually changed my buying strategy after receiving free samples in the mail because I have discovered a great product that I would have otherwise bypassed.

This can be especially true about items that can equate to a major purchase. I will stick with what I know. Having a sample lets me explore the possibilities. Ever buy a car without test-driving it first? Yeah, me either.

So why would you think about buying retail security or anti theft devices without really knowing what you are getting? Why wouldn’t you take advantage of the test drive?

Getting free samples of the anti theft devices is more than just getting something for free to show up on your door step. It is about having a chance to explore another opportunity to enhance your existing retail security.

With just one quick little click of a mouse you can be well on your way to getting those samples sent out to you.

What else is lost

Over the years of catching and apprehending shoplifters, I have found that there are other losses that are not picked up on during the initial contact with the shoplifter.

Let me give you a few examples. When I worked security for a home improvement chain, it was not uncommon for a shoplifter to pick up a bucket and stuff it full of 18V drill batteries and then walk out the door. The cashiers never thought a shoplifter would steal a bucket, so they just assumed it was theirs.

When I worked clothing security, I saw the same thing with purses and book bags. These bags would be packed full of clothes that had not been paid for, yet the shoplifters would calmly walk out the door with not only the stolen clothes, but the stolen purse or bag.

The first time I encountered a situation like that, I faltered for a moment, and then thought to check the book bag. Sure enough, it was ours, and had been stolen.
