Build off of someone else’s legwork

I got a phone call the other day from a friend of mine who works as a district level investigator for a national retail chain. She was leaving a store when she noticed an undercover police officer escorting someone back to his patrol car. As she was watching, she noticed that all of a sudden the parking lot was filling up with squad cars, surrounding the area.

Needless to say, she was rather taken aback and decided to wait and see what was going on. Sure enough, moments later one of the store employees, who had been sitting I his car, was being put into handcuffs and taken away.

She immediately went in to let the store managers know that there was a very distinct possibility that employee would not be returning from his lunch break.

Now, there is always the protocol of innocent until proven guilty in our legislative system. However, that doesn’t mean we should not be doing our due diligence and opening up an employee theft investigation.

If the employee is clean, than the employee theft investigation will yield no results. If you have an employee selling drugs, or other illicit activities on their lunch break, in the store’s parking lot, mind you, than chances are, there will be something to find in that employee theft investigation.

As investigators, we have our pride to think about and always want to feel like we are on top of every single employee theft case. We never want to feel like we overlooked, or weren’t smart enough to catch on to the employee theft.

That doesn’t mean we can’t push our pride aside and let someone else’s investigation open the door to our own employee theft case.

Door Duty

One of the hardest jobs that I have had to try and staff for is a door guard. Now outside of the clothing security/ loss prevention department, we simply call them greeters.

A greeter’s job is really quite simple. You stand at the door, you smile and greet every single person who enters the store, you respond to the clothing alarms in a professional and timely manner, and you remove any security tags on clothes that were missed.

Sounds easy enough, right? That’s what I thought too.

Now I try to find people who understand that standing at the door really means STANDING at the door. There’s no leaning around, or grabbing a nearby chair to sit on. You stand.

Next, while it is important to be friendly, and even chatty sometimes, I really would prefer that you chat with the customers as they come in. Often the customers seem to get in the way of the conversation they are having with a nearby employee.

Lastly, if the clothing alarm goes off, you do need to talk to the customer (it’s ok, the employee will still be there when you get back) and remove the missed security tags on clothes that were purchased.

It’s a good thing that even if I can’t always rely on my greeters, I can always trust my clothing security tags to do their job.

Find the balance

Many retailers are struggling to find the balance between payroll reductions and

Maintaining customer service levels. As a result, many items that once were locked up or limited the public’s access are now out for the world to see, touch, and have.

That sort of openness is a great compromise to having a limited staff available to get merchandise like perfumes, and shoes as well as other clothes.

The flip side of that balance is making sure that you still have clothing security. Now, more than ever before, anti theft devices like cheap tags and cheap labels will be needed to ensure your profits stay ahead of the game.

Picture is worth a thousand words

If a picture is worth a thousand words, than I can only imagine what seeing the actual thing is worth. I have seen several pictures of the bottle locks from Alpha Security, and the pictures, overall, do the product justice.

They show the bottle lock, both on its own, and on a bottle and it looks about like anyone would expect. The bottle locks are simple design, pretty compact, and easy to use. Just slide one on and snap it into place. Done! It’s not really rocket science.

What I wasn’t expecting was the major difference in quality when I actually held a bottle lock in my hand. Wow doesn’t even begin to describe it.

These bottle locks are made of a super durable, extremely hard plastic. I was expecting something much, much thinner. They really are streamlined, too. You could put them on several bottles and probably not even reduce your shelf count by one.

I knew from reading the descriptions on line and looking at the pictures that this is one product that would live up to my expectations. What I wasn’t prepared for was the bottle lock exceeding my expectations. I know that these are well worth the investment to increase the bottle security in my stores.

LP Seminars for All Types of Retailers

I just taught a loss prevention seminar a few weeks ago for a new client. We focused on shoplifting in their grocery environment. We split the 40 employees into two loss prevention seminars so the sales floor was still covered. I have to say the two groups I taught were so enthusiastic that it motivated me even more. My style is high-energy, out in the group and interactive with everyone. I hate a training seminar where a speaker stands in one spot and drones on.

Well last week the General Manager told me that the training was paying off. We were discussing this on the phone and about the follow up she wanted to set up when she said “I got to go, call you right back”.

Well, come to find out that her staff had identified another shoplifter from the techniques I shared with them while we were talking. She approached the subject the way I trained her and he indeed was a shoplifter. They got the merchandise back. The police responded and the shoplifter was being taken as their “guest” for an all-expenses paid trip to County jail.

I like to teach in a loss prevention workshop environment. This allows better interaction with everyone. It is easier to draw out the employees that are generally quieter and get them involved.

I also spent some time with management in a workshop environment training them on employee theft detection and prevention. I hope when I call the GM to follow up again the same thing does not happen during that call because of an employee theft problem. But you never know!

Gluten Free Living

I have long since tried to avoid all of the diet fads. I just assumed that if I tried to eat a well-balanced and proportionate diet, than I was pretty much good to go.

Well, lately I have been paying more attention to the production of foods and what goes into them. I now try to avoid a lot of the chemical additives.

Now they are saying that even some of our Healthy foods are dangerous because of the genetic modifications to our food and plant sources. For a lot of people Gluten sensitivity is a real issue to overcome because of these genetic enhancements.

Luckily for us, our anti theft devices are gluten free. The cheap labels used for anti shoplifting have an adhesive backing to it. Unlike postage stamps or envelopes (which may contain gluten) these EAS labels do not need to be licked. This eliminates any chance of having a reaction to gluten.

I wouldn’t go out and test this theory by licking an EAS label. It will probably taste pretty disgusting, and they are self-adhesive, so that would just be pretty much counter productive.

Cheap, Cheap, Cheap

When you are looking to invest in anti theft devices to enhance your clothing security, you know that you really want a cheap tag or cheap label. The question is, what are you sacrificing to get that coveted low price point?

Checkpoint might be the industry leader in EAS products, but are they really worth the additional cost? Compared against some of the cheap tags and cheap labels out there, the answer is a resounding YES!

I recently had a chance to compare a super low cost tag against these tags, and against Checkpoint.

Wow! What a difference. The low cost tag just felt flimsy. There is a seam running the length of the tag, which shouldn’t be a problem under normal circumstances. This is the exception, and the reason why you need to be careful about some low cost operators.

The tag wasn’t sealed down this seam, so you could easily pry the two pieces apart. Our tags don’t have this issue. Once a tag is on, it should stay on.

After seeing the difference in quality, I would have no problems spending money on the RBC version.

Shoplifting shouldn’t be left to chance…

I have long said that security, whether it is bottle security, or any liquor bottle security for that matter, is there to protect and prevent against a one in a million chance of something happening. It is not there for the common, everyday occurrences. For example:

With a quickness

So I submitted my information for a sample of the Checkpoint compatible anti theft devices. By was I shocked when they came in! I was expecting a package to arrive in the mail in about a month with like one little sticker in it.

Ha, boy was I wrong to think that!

For starters, the green envelope came within a few days, not sure exactly, but I don’t think it even took a week to get to me. Then when I opened it up, wow, out came this cascade of labels.

I think they included a few of each kind of label that they carry. It was nice to be able to look at all of their products instead of just seeing only one or two examples.

It was also nice to be able to look at all the samples at my leisure. There wasn’t any pushy salesperson pressuring me to by enormous quantities right then and there. I had time to think about what I needed for my business, and evaluate what they had sent.

Because of the samples, I was able to find an even better solution with their products than what I thought I had been looking for.

It is all about the company culture

While working in soft lines retail, I heard at length the promotion of the “company culture”. Even though these words turned into empty buzzwords, overused at every meeting and every conference call, the fact remains that there is truth and success that comes from creating a culture within a company or store.

The culture of clothing security is extremely volatile. I see stores that either nail it, or completely disregard it. As such, anti theft devices are either used to their fullest potential, or they sit, forgotten in an empty corner of a stockroom.

When you create a top down culture, the owners and managers lead the teams with the expectation of commitment to success. A winning culture is one where they entire store reacts to operational breakdowns and works together to fix their shortcomings.

You shouldn’t leave new clothes or shipments sitting unaccounted for in a stockroom, so why would we not have the same expectations of our EAS systems and devices?
