I am not an expert

There are a lot of things that I know. Some of them came from formal education. Some things came from on the job training. Other things that I know came from real life experience. I think that makes me a better, well-rounded person.

What is does not make me is an expert.

As much as I would love to say that I am an expert in everything, simply put, I am not. Realistically, no one can be. That’s why we hire out certain tasks to experts in their fields. Background check experts are a great example.

I know the basics of what a background check does. I know why background checks are important to my business. I have absolutely no idea how to even begin running and researching background checks.

This is where background check experts come into play. They know what to do and how to do it. They are well versed in the legal pieces of what they can and cannot ask. They also know what information legally cannot be obtained.

Background check experts also have the time to devote to the process. All they do is run background checks. I have a billion things going on, and even more piling up on my desk as we speak.

I am not an expert, but this time, I don’t have to be. I can concentrate on my work and let the background check expert’s focus on theirs.

Do a break-even analysis

When is the last time you really sat down to figure out your break-even analysis? Was it last month, or maybe a year ago? If you have done one recently, is it because your business is starting to struggle financially? Finally, are those struggles due to an increase in theft of your inventory?

If you have answered yes to those last couple of questions, now is the time to get serious about your bottle security.

In order for you to break even, you need to know your fixed costs, and the prices of your products. Then you can add in your variable costs like the addition of Alpha Security’s EASy Bottle Bottle locks for your bottle security.

This will get you the minimum sales you need to break even. You can even run these numbers using the costs to replace your stolen merchandise instead of the price of bottle locks for comparison.

The results will show you that after the initial investment of the bottle locks, you will find your break even number is significantly reduced compared to the number including your stolen inventory replenishment.

Now you can take all of this a step further by incorporating a payoff matrix to project out your future profits, but I can tell you that the bottle lock expenses will save you money in the long run.

Visit the Loss Prevention Store to purchase EASy Bottle bottle locks by Alpha Security and your Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system.

By the book

It is amazing the overwhelming wealth of information that can be found on line these days.

I am an avid on live researcher. I am so excited that virtually everything can be found on line these days. I can look up how to get an ink stain out of a shirt. Or maybe I will look up gardening tips, and a new recipe for my recent harvest of veggies. I can also look for answers regarding my professional life, like how to prevent retail theft.

One thing I have learned through all of this information gathering is that no matter how clear the directions seem to be online, or how reliable of a source I am using, until I actually try these practices out, I really have no idea what I am in for.

I am reminded of my first few days on the job as a rookie loss prevention agent. I had been given a huge manual to read through, as well as some on line learning courses. While I felt like I had all of the knowledge in the world, nothing I read truly prepared me for my first shoplifting experience.

If it weren’t for my fellow agents, I would not have successfully pulled off my first apprehension.

Having the ability to go to a loss prevention workshop or a loss prevention seminars would be the same as having someone else around to help guide you through the process. The one on one interaction is an invaluable resource to have. It really is the best way to learn.

Locked up, lose out

For a while, retailers that were fed up with preventing shoplifting of their small, high dollar, and/ or high shrink items simply started to lock them away. While I don’t know the exact numbers, I can only imagine that their shrink losses dramatically decreased, since no one but an employee with a key could access the merchandise.

I can also assume that from a customer service standpoint, there has been a significant decrease in those sales. It’s no wonder that loss prevention is often referred to as “lost sales”

I know that as a consumer there have been times that I have needed to purchase say a razor, and it has been locked up. In a perfect world scenario, you simply ask the available sales associate to get one.

In today’s meager payroll world, spending time to go track down an associate and then find out they have to get someone else who has the key, is cumbersome and time consuming. I, for one, don’t always have the time, or patience to wait for that. I have on more than one occasion walked out of a store without making a purchase because it was taking to long to get my product out of the lock box.

As it turns out, I am not the only one who has done this. Retailers are rethinking their strategy and going to new retail anti theft devices designed for better customer service and sales.

How to prepare for the unexpected

Retail security involves developing and executing plans to prepare for just about every conceivable situation to protect the safety of your employees, your customers and to secure the profitability of your store and its assets.

On the very forefront of inventory protection are anti theft devices. They are retail security’s permanent eyes and ears.

As a manager, I can’t stand guard over my high theft merchandise every single hour the store is open. I also can’t realistically expect to have the store employees standing in shifts over that same product.

This is where anti theft devices are useful. Once the EAS devices are attached, they are permanent. I know that if I leave for the day, that hard tag I put on a pair of jeans will still be there when I get in the next morning.

I know that if someone does try to steal an item, the EAS tag will set an audible alarm off notifying every one in the area to be on alert.

In retail security you do your best to prevent the unexpected from happening. Anti theft devices help eliminate the unexpected in the way of a shoplifting loss.

Testing the waters.

One of the more complex employee theft cases I had to work on was because there wasn’t a clear-cut way to explain to the associate that they were stealing.

Usually when I conduct an employee theft interview, the employee being question is aware of their wrongdoing. They may try to justify it or completely deny it, but deep down, they know it was wrong.

We had a cosmetics department in the store. At the different counters were the testers of eye shadow, and lipsticks, and of course perfume.

It wasn’t uncommon to see an employee occasionally walk by and give a little spritz as they walked to their selling department. Sometimes they would tryout a new shade of lipstick on a break. For the most part, the employees were respectful, and made purchases of the items they tested. Since this was no different than how we would treat a customer, we stayed out of the way.

One day, an employee came to me fuming because another employee would do their full makeup every day from their testers. Then this employee would take the lipsticks and eyeliners with them.

Because the makeup had no retail value, it was a hard sell when I went to talk to this employee. I explained moderation. I explained respect for the other associates. I even explained it was employee theft of company property. Nothing.

While they no longer work for the store, to this day, I really think she still believes that it is ok to take something that doesn’t belong to her, as long as it doesn’t have a price tag.

Best foot forward

When someone is trying to put their best foot forward, it really just means that they are trying to make a good impression and to do the right things for the circumstances they are in.

When you work with clothes and shoes, putting your best foot forward can be literal. There are plenty of clothing retailers who are only putting out one shoe on display and keeping the rest in the back. From a clothing security standpoint, I like that idea.

Shoe losses are not always about theft. Unlike clothes that are simply stolen, shoes losses can occur in several ways.

Yes, someone can steal a pair of shoes. That’s why it is still a good idea to use anti theft devices.

More common, though, are losses from miss-matched shoes. When customers are allowed to shop for their own pair of shoes, it is not uncommon for a customer to switch out one of the shoes for a different size. Now you are left with two different sized shoes in the same box.

Having cashiers inspect each shoe at the point of purchase will help reduce these losses, if you must keep all of your boxes of shoes out for the customers.

The Shopkeeper’s Privilege

When someone is stealing from your store, it is important to know what you can and cannot do to protect yourself from losses and potential litigation.

I cannot stress enough how important it is to first of all try to be proactive in preventing your losses. Use clothing security tags whenever possible. These clothing alarms are one of the best and most recognizable forms of clothing security you can use.

After you start using these clothing security tags, take note, because you should start to see a reduction in the amount of attempted thefts occurring.

After that, you do have the right to detain a suspected shoplifter under the Shopkeeper’s Privilege. This allows storeowners to make a detainment and collect their stolen merchandise.

Under reasonable accommodations and time frames, you can be well within your legal rights to take someone back to an office, get their ID, and recover your merchandise.

To avoid litigation from the shoplifter, understand that you cannot hold them indefinitely. You cannot threaten them, or impose undo bodily harm to them. You also cannot violate their privacy. You also need to be 100% certain that they did steal, because it will be on you to prove it, if the case goes to court.

The best result is to contact your local police or sheriff and find out the exact dos and don’ts allowed in your area.

One size doesn’t always fit everyone

When you are having issues with shoplifting and employee theft in your stores, it is a struggle to find solutions that work. It is even harder when you are trying to do it on your own.

There are plenty of resources available to small business owners and retail establishments aimed at detecting and preventing theft. The unfortunate part is that these resources often give only a one size fits all solution.

If you don’t have the auxiliary knowledge of how to stop shoplifting or employee theft, then you can be left with a huge void to fill. That void will not be just the lack of solutions, but also the very literal void on your shelves from your missing product.

This is where having a resource like the ability to attend a loss prevention workshop   plays a key role in your success. Not only will you be able to gain knowledge and insight into the types, causes, and prevention of retail theft but you will have the guidance of an experienced professional to help guide your way.

They will guide you through your own unique problems and opportunities and work with your to design a comprehensive game plan. You can be rest assured that when you leave the loss prevention seminars you will have the loss prevention training you need to make your business a success.

Is your stores lack of security cooking up trouble?

Many stores offer a department dedicated to cookware. Some of the items are small and easy to conceal; knives, kitchen utensils, etc. But other larger items, like blenders, specialty coffee machines and cookware sets, are harder to hide on your person. Unfortunately, some stores do not offer bags large enough to place these sizable items in. Allowing customers to walk out with these high-priced items without a bag only opens the door for shoplifters to do the same.

Working as an LP agent, I once experienced a reoccurring shoplifter who would come into my store, select a high-priced cookware set, and walk out to his car. This happened every few weeks for several months.  Eventually, we caught him red handed at the exit with an unpaid for set. When we asked him why he chose to steal this particular item over and over, he told us it was easy for him. Walking out of the store, unquestioned, with one high-valued item that could be returned later for store credit was easier than concealing multiple items.

An easy way to deter shoplifters is by attaching Anti-theft Devices to these larger items. Cheap Tags and Cheap Labels are an inexpensive fix to this problem. Also, having an associate or Retail Security personnel ensure these un-bagged items are paid for by checking receipts at the door can help prevent retail theft from happening in your store.
