Think you know it all?

When I first started out in loss prevention well over thirty years ago, there were very different concerns. I remember my first review of standards involved my closure and reduction of check fraud. Check fraud! Who even writes checks anymore, much less steals them? Criminals have moved on to far more sophisticated forms of theft and fraud than stealing or forging checks.

My point is that things change. Technology has changed, the methods of shoplifting, not to mention employee theft, have changed. If I was still working under the “rules” of a decade ago, I would not be successful in reducing my shrink, and I would probably have gotten myself, or my employers into some pretty sad litigation.

It is important for my success to continue to educate myself on these changes. That is the only way I can make sure that when I do my loss prevention training, I know I am ahead of the game.

Most professional industries have some sort of continuing education or certification to stay employed in their respective fields. Why would loss prevention be any different?

Deny, Deny, Deny

It would seem that to keep a product out on display and to also have it impervious to theft would be two conflicting sides of the coin. In all my years of trying to prevent shoplifting, I know that using the right retail anti theft devices can allow you, as a merchandiser, to do just that.

 When you are using a product like the Jewel Lok, you create a product denial scenario. It is a basic principal of retail loss prevention. If a thief cannot get to the product they desire, they will not steal it.

It is getting personal

Do you need a better way to protect your personal care items? I know that we have seen an influx of shoplifters trying to steal personal and beauty care items. I guess it is because the summer is here and everyone wants to look his or her best in their summer attire.

 That doesn’t mean that they should be able to get away with stealing, it just means that we have to find a way to tighten our retail security. Most anti shoplifting processes start with anti theft devices.

 If you have access to rolls of cheap labels, it is easy to add them on the fly. If you start to notice certain items disappearing from your shelves without corresponding sales, slap an EAS label on them.

 If the thieves move on to a different item or product assortment, then start tagging those also. It may not provide the permanent solution for your shrink, but it will buy you some time to figure out a better solution for those items.

 Anything you can do to make it harder for a shoplifter, the more results you will see.

Employee Theft: The #1 Profit Killer

Throughout my career in loss prevention I was taught that three things cause shrink: external theft, internal theft, and paperwork error. Internal theft is the number one cause, followed by shoplifting, then operational miscues. Keeping track of employees is a necessity and this is done by conducting an employee theft investigation. These investigations don’t take a lot of time to complete and can be very beneficial in weeding out the dishonest employees that are causing more harm than good to you and your business.

Loss prevention and store management have a responsibility to monitor transactions and follow up on transactions that seem out of the ordinary in order to prevent as much employee theft as possible. Once some of the dishonest employees are caught and have their employment terminated, the other employees will notice this. The end result would be more honest employees who are reluctant to act dishonestly. If you were an employee that was thinking about stealing something and saw a co-worker being escorted out of the store by loss prevention or for extreme cases the police, would you think twice about stealing? The answer is yes. Deterrence works, letting your employees know that their work is monitored at all times works.

Employee theft is the worst cause of shrink and sadly it will take place. However with the help of loss prevention starting and completing a successful employee theft investigation, you can reduce the amount of loss while increasing the amount of honest and productive employees that you have in your place of business.

Another one bites off more than they can chew

We had another shoplifter this weekend. It was a pretty routine stop; all of our clothing security was in place. The anti theft devices on the clothes set off the alarm, not that we needed them to, because we had been watching the whole time.

 What was a little bit of an unexpected twist, was after they had concealed several shirts in their book bag, they stopped by one of the wrap stands and picked up a few chocolates and some candy we had for a special promotion.

 They had been bold enough to start to unwrap the chocolate on their way out of the store, not even thinking that the cashiers nearby saw them take the candy. 

They almost were spooked out by our cashiers, lucky for us and unlucky for the shoplifter, we were close enough to shoo them away so we could make the apprehension.

 It was a situation where I guess the shoplifter didn’t realize that they were biting off more than they could chew.

Is your clothing on the Internet?

I did a recent online search for some clothes that were no longer available on the company’s web site. While I never did find the exact item I was looking for, it surprised me how many people were selling this store’s clothes online.

 A few of the items were used, but a good majority of them were being sold as brand new, never worn and with tags still attached. I almost wanted to ask if they even bothered to take the anti theft devices off, or were they not there to begin with.

 This is one of those cases where if it seems too good to be true, than it probably is. There is a reason why these new clothes are being sold at a huge discount. It is because they are, more than likely, stolen items.

 If you carry one of a kind piece, or think that you might have a theft problem, check your internet stores to see if your items are being resold. If they are, your local law enforcement usually has an electronic or internet crime division.

A Package Deal with Bottle Security

So a friend of mine decides he wants to open a “package store” which is essentially a liquor store. He is one of these guys that “sees” more on a big picture level as opposed to worrying about the details. We all know the saying “the devil is in the details”. Well one of those “devils” is bottle security. This was a detail that he ignored wholeheartedly while planning his business. I don’t think my friend ever gave one thought to the fact I spent almost 15 years in the loss prevention field when he was setting up his business. In fact I don’t think he gave any thought to security at all in his “business plan”. He had the idea, he had money and away he went to open his business. That is where the trouble began.

I watched him from afar wondering how he would employ liquor bottle security over his product. I secretly started doing my own research knowing eventually the flickering fluorescent light bulb over his head would eventually blink on and he would get the idea to call me for help. My research started with looking for a company that had some type of a bottle lock or liquor bottle security device. I came across a company called Alpha Security that had created some pretty innovative products. They had the EASy bottle bottle lock system which employed bottle locks that had their own alarms as well as an embedded rf chip that would alert the alarm pedestals at the front of the store if the product with alarm was removed from the store without deactivation. Another form of bottle security he employed was putting handwritten signs around the store which stated “If you steal you go to jail”.  Besides the fact they were handwritten they did not give the good customers a “warm fuzzy” feeling about shopping in his store.  My friend was really struggling trying to invent his own version of liquor bottle locks when it finally dawned on him to call me to discuss a strategy to lower his shrink.

Knowing my friend and his stubbornness is why I let him finally get to the point of realizing he needed my help, otherwise anything I said would have fallen on deaf ears. Don’t we all know someone like that??  I quickly brought him up to speed about the EASy bottle system which was developed by Alpha Security. I showed him a picture of the liquor bottle lock that I thought would best suit his business. He could not believe that this lean and sleek lock had an embedded alarm as well as the fact that if someone attempted to defeat the liquor bottle lock it would render the product inconsumable. The obvious solution

Have you seen the Value point and value point plus cheap labels yet? If not, definitely go and check them out. I just got my free samples of them and they are pretty amazing.

 I was showing the selection to one of my store managers, and he saw that one of the labels was already printed saying, “Security device enclosed”. He was unsure as to why an anti theft device would be so obvious. He thought they should be hidden and secretive.

 We talked about how retail security isn’t always about the “gotcha” aspect. It is often about prevention. By having a label state that it is in fact a security device designed specifically for anti shoplifting, it is trying to be a warning.

 It is obvious that the inventory is under surveillance and protection. If a potential criminal knows that this piece of merchandise, or this store is not an easy target, they area more likely to move onto the next target. Some of them won’t even steal at all.

I had a shoplifter come in over the weekend and tried on some shirts in the fitting room. I had started my surveillance on her because she came in and quickly selected the maximum amount of clothes you can try on in the fitting rooms.

 She didn’t really seem to care about what she picked up; she just started laying things over her arm and headed off to a fitting room stall.

 After she was done, she was obviously wearing one of our shirts. You didn’t need to work in clothing security to realize that the tag was hanging out of the collar of her shirt.

 The other tell tale sign was the anti theft device still attached at the bottom hem of the shirt. She tried to cover it up by clenching her arm tight against the tag, but it only made her seem more obvious, and more awkward as she walked to the door.

 When we stopped her, she desperately tried to convince us that the shirt she was wearing was indeed hers. After one of the employees came out with her old shirt, she knew it was best to give it up.

Simplified Retail Security…

I am often amazed at how complex we as business leaders tend to make things.  In an effort to always do more and do it better we sometimes just overcomplicate proven processes.  Take retail security for example.  I am amazed at how many different providers there are of anti-shoplifting tools.  Last I checked all EAS tags were created equally. 

 Think about it.  It is the same technology.  Whether you get name brand EAS tags or you get cheap tags you will still be preventing loss by protecting your product.  Anti-theft devices are unnerving for most shoplifters.  Most major studies show that the overwhelming offender is an amateur.  This type of shoplifter only knows one thing; anti-theft devices will get you caught.  If they don’t care whose name is on the tag then why do we?  Why pay for a name brand tag when cheap tags and cheap labels still deter theft.  When you consider switching to less expensive equipment you will still deter theft and save on expenses.  I think that’s called a win-win situation.
