Jewelry Can Be Clothing Too- Clothing Security

Jewelry is a huge add- on item in retail, or in any small business for that matter. It is also a huge theft item by nature. Jewelry is small. It is easily concealed, and can be quite expensive. Jewelry losses sometimes outweigh the profit margins built into these impulse buys. Clothing security should always be extended out to protect this high theft item.
Clothes are not the only items that need protection using retail theft devices. Jewelry and accessories can often create losses that far exceed that of any other clothing department or product group.
In fact, I worked for a retailer once that had jewelry losses that exceeded our designer clothing department two to one.
Another point of consideration is that jewelry sales seem to be cropping up for other non-clothing retailers. How many convenience stores have been selling costumer jewelry up on their counters for points of sale add on?
When you begin to think of clothing security as more than just clothes, you may be surprised at the impact it makes to your bottom line.

Only Worn Once- Alpha Shark Tags

It is extremely difficult to stay at the height of fashion when you have a large and unsightly security tag affixed to the center of your blouse or special occasion outfit. For many women, in particular, this might be a reality as the practice of wardrobing retail becomes harder with more retailers’ using alpha shark tags.
When someone is wardrobing pieces of merchandise, they are buying an item to wear one time and then return to get their money back.
This is all to frequent with special occasion items (for example) where the wearer can’t justify spending the money on the item that will be worn only once, maybe twice.
These women keep the price tags on, being careful not to spill on or otherwise soil the merchandise, and return the item soon after the event. The justification comes from feeling like they gave back an item that is as good as new, so the retailer could not possibly be out anything.
Since they have taken such good care of the item, they feel like they are free to continue this practice of wardrobing retail to stay at the height of fashion.
Yes, in some circles, it is still taboo to wear the same thing one more than one occasion. There is a social pressure to have the latest looks, or at least a different one than what was worn to the last soiree.
Alpha Shark Tags help eliminate this one time use process. Because the tags are too obvious to be hidden, wardrobing is no longer an option.

The National Debate- Wardrobing

When national retailer Nordstrom’s recently announced that they would be trailblazing the way for retailer’s to fight the common practice of wardrobing, it seems like every retail, fashion, and business blog lit up with a frenzied debate about the pros and cons and ethical righteousness from both points of view.
Just like with any form of theft or fraud, there is always a justification of why someone should carry out such an action. In the case of wardrobing, it comes down to the stance of “no harm, no foul”.
Many people underestimate the severity of wardrobing. Because an item is paid for and then refunded, the user feels like it is no different than any other refund that is conducted on a normal basis.
Retailer’s are often in a quandary on what to do with these items. Up until now, Nordstrom’s did not have a customer service friendly way to decline these returns. They were then left with items that had been worn, and ethically could not be sold as new. The garments might have been fine upon the initial glance, but if you turned them inside out, there were often the tell tale signs of use- makeup or deodorant debris, perhaps a not so new smell.
Because there is not a defect, the retailer can’t send it back to the manufacturer for a credit. This leaves the retailer with having to take a massive discount to get the item out of their inventory.

Miss Matched Losses- Clothing Security Tags

Miss matched shoes are two different sized shoes in the same shoebox. Obviously they didn’t come in that way from the vendor, so when you have a pair of miss matched shoes there isn’t much you can do with them. Clothing security needs to be different to combat this particular kind of loss.
A customer with two different sized feet (which is very common) get two pairs of shoes in two different sizes. They take one shoe from each pair leaving you with a pair of dissimilar sized shoes.
Since it is very rare that you can find another customer with the exact need for this mixed size pair of shoes, you now have a loss on your hands.
Mini CableLoks by Alpha Security can actually help with these kinds of losses.
They are alarm based clothing security. It will emit a clothing alarm like any other clothing security tags. They are secured using aircraft grade cables instead of pins, which gives some protection against miss match shoes.
When you use the 6” cable, you can actually attach both pair of shoes together with some room for the customer to still try them on and take a step or two. If both shoes stay physically connected, they can’t be separated causing the loss.

Follow The Big Guys- Alpha Shark Tags

A recent news release brought an under acknowledged retail secret to light. That secret is wardrobing.
Wardrobing is the practice of buying an item, wearing that item once for a special occasion, and then returning the item for full purchased price.
In this news article one of the larger retail chains, whose product lines include designer and higher priced items, made a very public statement regarding the practice of wardrobing retail.
They announced that in an effort to combat this practice, they would be adding wardrobing tags to their lines of security measures. These black tags are affixed to the front of a garment. Attached to this tag is a paper card of instructions on how to remove the tag. The instructions also state that without the tag still on, the garment cannot be returned.
The point that this retailer is trying to make is to stop the likelihood of a customer wearing the product only one time before returning it. By having a big, unsightly tag on the front of an outfit, the user will be less inclined to wear that particular item out in public. If they can’t wear it, they (in turn) will be less likely to buy the item in the first place.
If they are less likely to buy the item, then the wardrobing tags are doing their job of discouraging the wardrobing retail practice.

Close The Window – Clothing Security Tags

Over the years I have seen a common problem with clothing security tags. Luckily this particular issue has a very simple remedy. The problem is attaching the clothing security tags on properly to bulky winter coats.

Often, when I do a spot check of these items, I find that the Checkpoint tags were not snapped down far enough. Sometimes the bulky of the coat makes it hard to determine that the tag is accurately secured. When it is not, there is an open window in our clothing security.

When checked, you will find that the pin is attached to the base of the tag. However, the pin is not completely engaged into the locking mechanism. That means anyone can detach the tags simply by giving the two sides a good pull. They will detach without damage to the tag or the outerwear.

To fix this, simply give the Checkpoint tags an extra push down. The pins in the tag will click and snap completely shut. This way they are not easily wiggled loose because the pin was not completely engaged.

By doing minimal additional training with your store employees, you should greatly reduce these discrepancies. The unintentional window will be shut and your coats will once again have the proper level of clothing security.

Who Has The Money? – Security Tags on Clothes

When times are good and parents have more disposable income, they are more willing to spend money on name brand items of clothing. As times get harder and money is tighter, the same drive to purchase these items decreases. That doesn’t mean you need to lie off of your clothing security. Just because there is a decrease in desire to buy the clothing, doesn’t mean there is a decrease in desire for the clothing
What we end up seeing is a combination of one of two events. The first is the martyr syndrome. Well meaning parents spend what little income they can on their kids. They feel that they must be taken care of before the parent’s own needs. Because they still have their own list of wants that they are unable to afford, these parents might turn to theft to supplement their own wants.
The flip side is that when a parent’s cash runs short, teens and tweens (who rely on their parents for spending cash) are left without. That means the designer jeans and fashionable accessories are not as easy to come by.
Both groups can succumb to their own personal pressures and turn to theft. Security tags on clothes are an effective deterrent as neither of these groups is willing to risk too much effort for fear of getting caught.

Drill Down the Reports- Clothing Security

I was recently talking to a national company who was incurring losses due to theft at the hands of major organized crime rings. They wanted to know how to reduce the losses and increase their clothing security.
I spoke with them about some of their basic operations to get a better feel for what we could do for them. As it turned out, some most of the issues had nothing to do with clothing alarms or clothing security tags. The biggest complications came from their inventory ordering and management.
Their inventory relied heavily on special buys. These were big purchases of designer clothing that were either a second run or otherwise greatly reduced item. Once these items sold out, there was no rebuy of the merchandise. Inventory was taken once a year so it was potentially twelve months before a loss was identified. Needless to say tracking their losses was a difficult task.
I suggested that they start by drilling down the sales reports. It is there that they would be able to see what was there but also what was not. If they were not selling in a particular area they might be experiencing theft issues, If you don’t have the product to sell, your sales suffer. Next is to evaluate the clothing security on those items and increase their usage accordingly.

The Name Game- Clothing Security Tags

I don’t recall there ever being a time when it was not important to wear a name brand. Even though the names might change, having a designer label or the right name brand is always important- especially to teenagers. Since these teens are often under serious pressure to have the right look, or to fit in with the “right crowd”, they often resort to making attempts to defeat clothing security to steal their coveted attire.
One of the redeeming factors for retailers is that teenagers are not hardened career criminals. This means that clothing security tags make a greater impact on thwarting those types of theft.
Teenagers do not have the same level of experience or determination needed to defeat security tags on clothes. In some ways, they have more driving factors to convince them not to steal. Having Checkpoint tags increases the risk of a teenage getting caught stealing. If they are caught, they know that their parents will find out, maybe even their friends or their school. As much as they are pressured to wear these name brand clothes, there is equal pressure not to get caught.
By increasing their risk of getting caught, you can tip the teen’s decision-making scales in your favor. Clothing security on name brand clothes will keep your merchandise in stock and keep your popular with the “right crowd”.

Fit The Shoes- Clothing Security

Using the Alpha Security Mini CableLok instead of checkpoint tags offers more range for your clothing security. The Mini CableLok is a small 3” aircraft grade cable with an isolated sound chamber. The cable can be looped through straps or decorations that would secure the lock. By increasing the range of merchandise that can now be secured, to makes it harder for a shoplifter or an employee to sneak out the door.
Shoes always pose a problem for clothing security tags. The two biggest losses in the shoe department are inventory shrink losses from shoplifters or employees.
These theft losses are pretty straightforward. Often a shoplifter will come into the store with an old pair of shoes and try on a new pair. They put their old pair in the box and walk out with the new pair.
An employee might do the same, or they will be more likely to pass off the shoes at the point of sale to a friend or relative.
Using clothing security only partially solves each of these problems. Since the pin system only works when there is an eye to thread the stickpin through, many shoes cannot be tagged.
Strappy heels, dress shoes and sandals are prime examples. Without clothing security, it is just that much easier for a shoplifter to walk out the door unnoticed.
