Top Of Their Game- Checkpoint Tags

Checkpoint tags are to a certain extent efficient in preventing shoplifting. When it comes to shoes, these clothing security tags may not be at the top of their game. If it is a case of straight theft from a grab and run, or concealment then the tags can be useful. When it comes to miss matched shoes, it is not an effective deterrent.
Miss matched shoes are two different sized shoes in the same shoebox. Obviously it didn’t come in that way from the vendor. A customer with two different sized feet (which is very common) get two pairs of shoes in two different sizes. They take one shoe from each pair leaving you with a pair of dissimilar sized shoes. Since it is very rare that you can find another customer with the exact need for this mixed size pair of shoes, you now have a loss on your hands.
Mini CableLoks by Alpha Security can actually help with both kinds of losses. They are an alarm based clothing security tag. They are secured using aircraft grade cables instead of pins, which gives some protection against miss match shoes. When you use the 6” cable, you can actually attach both pair of shoes together with some room for the customer to still try them on and take a step or two. If both shoes stay physically connected, they can’t be separated causing the loss.

Blurred Lines- Wardrobing Tags

The hard part of combating wardrobing is that there are blurred lines within the process. Stores take returns of clothing that have not been worn. Stores take returns of clothing that were worn multiple times, but ended up being defective.
So why would it be so bad that someone wears clothing once, for only a few hours, and then returns it?
Just because you can justify it, doesn’t make it any better, or any more ethical to be wardrobing. Unfortunately, these blurred lines only make it easier for some people to rationalize what they are doing as acceptable.
Retailers do not have the luxury of entering into a discussion with these particular customers to convince them that wardrobing is bad. Any broach of the subject can create potentially an accusatory situation for a customer; and not every employee is going to be correct in their accusations.
The end result is that retailers need a better way to consistently uphold their return policies, while accommodating the legitimate customer return, and declining the fraudulent ones.
Wardrobing Tags are designed to help clear up any blurred lines that a seemingly generous return policy might have.
The Wardrobing Tags have the ability to hold a copy of the store’s return policy. They also provide a visual identifier for store employees to differentiate between a real customer and one who is wardrobing.

When Do You Think You Will Need Them? – Checkpoint Tags

Why should a retail business spend money on Checkpoint Tags, when they might not actually need them? The real question is why wouldn’t you want to spend money on Checkpoint Tags before it becomes a problem? If you wait until after you have a theft problem, you will end up spending more money to fix the problem than if you had initially invested in clothing security.
Some shoplifters are specifically looking for designer brands that they can resell easily on ebay, or in a flea market. Others are looking for personal usage of the merchandise. Whether they can’t afford, or simply don’t want to pay for new clothes, shoplifters often steal so they have something new to wear. Same thing goes for employees.
Ultimately, security tags on clothes are there for two reasons.
One is to deter shoplifters from taking clothing and other items from your stores. The next is to stop the theft that might be taking place already, that you are not aware of. Both of which can create a serious financial strain if left unnoticed.
In any case, Checkpoint Tags have been proven to reduce inventory shrink numbers by as much as 85 percent- more than what the cost of clothing security would be in most stores.

Can’t Keep Waiting- Clothing Security

I have spent countless hours watching shoplifters in the act of committing their crimes. One time I spent thirty minutes waiting and “cleaning” the fitting room, because there was a girl inside, who was going to steal a shirt, and kept checking to see if I left. We didn’t have much clothing security, so I knew that she was determined to take the shirt.
Just like every other store employee, at some point you have to stop watching in order to attend to another function of your job.
In this case, there was a hurt customer that I needed to attend to. So I left my potential suspect with the clothes that had no anti theft devices. It wasn’t long before I saw the girl leave. When I went to see if she left the clothes, all I found was a pile of empty hangers.
I knew that if we had used something, anything, even if it were just cheap tags or cheap labels for anti theft devices, this girl would not have left with our merchandise.

Big Protection, Tiny Package- Clothing Security Tags

Shoes always pose a problem for clothing security. The two biggest losses in the shoe department are inventory shrink losses from shoplifters or employees.
These theft losses are pretty straightforward. Often a shoplifter will come into the store with an old pair of shoes and try on a new pair. They put their old pair in the box and walk out with the new pair. An employee might do the same, or they will be more likely to pass off the shoes at the point of sale to a friend or relative.
Using Checkpoint tags only partially solves each of these problems. Since the pin system only works when there is an eye to thread the stickpin through, many shoes cannot be tagged. Strappy heels, dress shoes and sandals are prime examples. Without clothing security tags, it is just that much easier for a shoplifter to walk out the door unnoticed.
Using the Alpha Security Mini CableLok instead of checkpoint tags offers more range for your clothing security tags. The Mini CableLok is a small 3” aircraft grade cable with an isolated sound chamber. The cable can be looped through straps or decorations that would secure the lock. By increasing the range of merchandise that can now be secured, to makes it harder for a shoplifter or an employee to sneak out the door.

Can’t Change Her Mind – Wardrobing Retail

As a retailer, it is our job not to try and change the perception of these customers. It is our job to eliminate the opportunity within our own store for wardrobing retail to take place.
Two ladies were talking about the interview one of them had later. One of the ladies was expressing her disgust at the other coffee shop patrons who were walking to closely to her with their cups of coffee.
She talked about how mad she would be if someone spilt even a drop of coffee on her new outfit. At first I sympathized thinking that if I had bought a new outfit to impress a potential employer, I would not want to show up with coffee stains all over it.
Then I realized that the lady was upset because she needed to keep the outfit nice so she could return it to the store the next day. It actually made me so disgusted that I personally wanted to “accidentally” spill my coffee on her. Then I realized- what good would that do?
The lady was so open about her actions that this very clearly was not her first time doing so. Unfortunately, this also would not be her last.
Wardrobing is a part of her lifestyle. It probably is something she had done for so long, that she no longer sees anything wrong with it, if she ever even felt any remorse or hesitation about it.

Don’t Throw It Away- Clothing Security

Would you throw a hundred dollar bill in the trash for no reason? How about a twenty? No? Well maybe you would walk by a trashcan and throw a dollar bill into it without caring; it is just a dollar after all?
If you wouldn’t throw money away on purpose, than you probably keep pretty tight controls on your business’s cash.
You probably have register reports that tell you how much cash you should have at the end of the day. You probably also count the cash in your safe and any starting banks for your tills. You most likely have a bank deposit log for outgoing deposits, and balance that record against your account statements form the bank every quarter, if not every month.
How about your merchandise? Do you keep the same level of control on your merchandise as you do your cash?
Do you maintain inventory tracking and counting on a quarterly basis?  Once a quarter might be to frequent for some business, so how about conducting a full inventory once every six months, or once a year?
You have a locking cash register and understand the importance of securing your cash, so why wouldn’t you secure you clothing and other inventory products?
Because you spent your carefully managed and tracked cash on purchasing your inventory, would it not make sense that you should spend as much time and effort in protecting your clothing inventory from losses?

Cheaply Made, Cheaply Defeated- Security Tags On Clothes

In order for security tags on clothes to be effective, you have to have a certain level of quality in your clothing security resources and tools. Some retailer’s use cheaply made and cheaply sold clothing security, instead of Checkpoint Tags.
If I was to look closely at these cheap clothing security tags, I would be able to see the actual seam in the middle of the hard shell. On some of them, the seams are actually breaking apart.
Any shoplifter with an ounce of persistence could easily pry the two sides apart with a screwdriver or other tool. Once the two sides are pried apart, the shoplifter has access to the inner locking mechanism, which is what holds the pin in place on your clothing. Once the pin is removed, these clothing security tags have effectively been rendered completely worthless.
Checkpoint tags have a guarantee of quality. They know that if you cannot rely on their product for your clothing security needs, you will spend your money elsewhere. That is why when they seal the clamshell section of their tags together, they do it so it is a permanent seal that will not come undone, or be easily pried apart. Just remember, if the tags are cheaply made, they will cheaply be defeated.

Are Your Profits Tied Up? – Clothing Security

It is not uncommon for retailers to use bulky cable and chain locks to secure entire fixtures of expensive clothes, like jackets or coats. The problem is that these chain locks are often extremely sensitive and are prone to setting off the clothing alarm by very little movement of the product.
That means that an employee needs to be present at all times to detach an item for a customer. When an employee is not there, customers are often reluctant to try anything on, much less to take their time to track down an employee just to look at one on.
This is probably the most common area that retailers are challenged with finding a balance. They need to balance the use of clothing security with the shopping habits and needs of their customers.
When your merchandise is tied up to the point that it is unshoppable to the average customers then your profits on those items are tied up as well. Literally. It has been proven over and over that when you eliminate access to your merchandise, sales go down. When you give customers the ability to touch, feel, and try on clothes at their leisure, sales of those items increase. When the sales increase, so does the profit.

Nice Nails- Alpha Shark Tags

At one time, we employed a door guard whose job it was to greet customers, answer alarm activations, and to validate returns coming into the store. One day he told me about a girl that came in to return some nail polish. As she showed my employee the receipt and the bottle she was returning, told her that the color was really pretty and almost like the color she was wearing on her nails. It was a classic case of wardrobing.
Now this girl quickly changed her story and backtracked saying that she wasn’t going to return the nail polish, but she knew she was caught.
Too bad it isn’t always that easy for a retailer to know if their product is used in wardrobing.
Even though it is rare to catch a customer actually wearing the clothes they are attempting to return, Alpha Shark Tags are the next best thing. These plastic red tags help to reinforce your store’s return policy. Because the red tags simply can not be removed or reattached without showing signs of tampering, it is a fool proof way for your employees to determine if the clothing can be returned or not.
Alpha Shark Tags may not be able to tell you what the customer did with the clothes after they left the store, but they can decrease the likelihood that they were worn and then returned.
