I had an incident recently where a woman had come into the store to buy a new swim set. She thought that she could be sneaky and basically, con the cashier.

This woman picked out her two-piece swimsuit and put them on the same hanger. Then she pulled the price tag off of one of the pieces. She was trying to make it look like the pieces were to be sold as a set, instead of individually.We have had more success with selling swim items separately, instead of as a two-piece set.

Since we no longer sell swimsuits in a set, everything is sold as an individual item; it was pretty easy for the cashier to spot what was going on. The cashier explained that it was two separate pieces, and she needed to get the price for both items.

Needless to say the woman barked out something rude and left without her half price swimsuit.

A grab and run theft is a pretty basic, and yet highly effective form of theft that affects many clothing retailers. The thieves come into a store, pick up a large quantity of the same merchandise, and run out the door into the waiting get away car.

Sometimes the thieves will load their own arms up as with as much as what they can hold, sometimes they will use the store’s shopping bags or carts to hold the massive quantity of merchandise on their way out the door.

Because these thefts are so big and obvious, the shoplifter will come in and out in as little time as possible- sometimes less than a minute total. All of that is contributed to some detailed planning ahead of the actual theft.

They will have scoped out the store ahead of time to find out where items are kept. They will figure out the best place to park the escape vehicle, and they will know when your employees are most and least likely to notice them.

Because the theft happens so fast, it is basically over before it begins. The days of mob bosses and pin striped suits are gone. The new face of organized crime is one of many nationalities, both males and females, and of all groups. The sad reality is that organized criminals are stealing from these stores because the owners and employees are so oblivious to what is going on. The employees are simply looking the other way, or do not realize the full extent of the theft.

What ends up becoming a reality is that many retailers think because no one in a fedora and pin stripe suit is stealing from them they are immune to organized retail theft.

During a recent loss prevention consultation with a local clothing store, we knew we needed to have some ways to identify what kinds of thefts were taking place, and what kinds of clothing protection would be effective to stop the inventory losses for happening.

We started by taking a look at the store’s sales reports. We broke the sales down by departments and compared them to last month’s sales and last year’s. We noticed which departments were behind on their sales goals for the year, and which ones did not increase compared to last year.

I explained that if they did not have the right products to sell, then they would not have a chance at meeting or exceeding their sales goals.

Next we looked for signs of theft- specifically for torn of clothing tags. We found several caches of them behind the mirrors in the fitting rooms. We also found them under some shelves in an unattended corner of the store.

One of the most basic solutions was to start using electric article surveillance tags and devices to protect the inventory from theft. Next we put a seal of caulk around the fitting room mirrors, preventing the thieves from sticking price and clothing tags behind them.

Lastly, we moved the tables around to open up the back corner. Now, even when an employee can’t physically be back in that corner, they can still keep a watchful eye from the front of the store.

How much is too much? When you are merchandising and stocking in your departments, traditionally you want to fill the shelves and the racks as much as you can. It is usually discouraged to have things in a back stockroom. How does this play into clothing security? Can there be too much product on the sales floor?

If you have theft issues, than yes, you can have too much product out. Thieves will take every opportunity you give them. If you put out every piece of high theft merchandise, do not be surprised if the thieves actually take every piece.

Can you reduce your shelf quantities and not make a negative impact on your sales? If so, do it. Take those items and back stock them.

The right way is to look at your current sales and make a determination if you can make the reductions.
