Let The Sun Shine In- Checkpoint Tags

As with many accessories, glasses have always been problematic in trying to protect form shoplifters. It’s not just sunglasses that need protection it is also prescription glasses. Now, thanks to Checkpoint tag compatible Alpha Security technology, you can (as they say) protect this year’s hottest sunglasses and prescription eyewear with the Eyewear Tag.
These Eyewear Tags are small attachments that fit on the glasses’ earpieces. The Eyewear Tag provides durable construction with a protective cushion that securely holds and protects eyewear. They are easy to apply and remove, and easily reused for the next pair of glasses that comes into your inventory. Training your employees on how to use and reuse them will be a breeze.
This clothing security comes in two sizes in RF clothing alarm technology and three sizes in AM technology. This makes it even easier for your clothing security tags to seamlessly incorporate with your Checkpoint tags and existing clothing alarm.
Even better for you and your customers is how small and unobtrusive the Eyewear Tags really are. As with any other clothing security tags, you wouldn’t want to inconvenience your customers in the name of theft prevention. The tags are fitted so the flat side is inward- eliminating bulk for when a customer is trying the glasses on.

Make A Good Impression- Wardrobing

I recently had a chance to interview several recent college graduates. We talked about the opportunities that were opening up to them, now that they had their degrees. The conversation then turned to interviewing skills and general interviewing tips for their job hunt. I wasn’t expecting the moral conversation about wardrobing that was about to follow.
As we talked about how to dress professionally, one of the grads started talking about how she is always prepared because she buys a new outfit for each interview and then returns it. She talked about how the hardest item to return was shoes. When you wear them outside, they immediately begin to show wear on the soles- retailers look for that at the returns desk. Everything else was pretty easy to return.
She figured out that if a suit jacket has the price tag on the sleeve she could bend the plastic on the attachment and slide it carefully through the hole in the price tag. Instead of clipping the plastic piece, she pushes it back inside the sleeve for the interview.
After she is done, she bends the plastic end back through the hole of the price tag. By doing this, the employer never sees the evidence of her wardrobing, and the retailer that she is returning the outfit to never suspect anything because the tag is still attached.

One in Six- Wardrobing Retail

There are some staggering numbers that have come out recently regarding the practice of wardrobing retail stores. One in six women admit to having purchased an item that they knew they were only going to wear one time.
It gets even worse. Of those women, one in eleven of them are wardrobing habitually. That means that this is a part of their day to day lives, and are probably one of the stores “best customers” since they are in all the time buying things. Ugh.
Special occasion items are one of the biggest victims of wardrobing. You have the fashionista that is desperately trying to keep up with the latest trends, the high school prom go-er who wants a beautiful dress, but can’t afford it, and the ladies of society who wouldn’t be caught dead wearing the same thing twice.
Whether through society’s pressure or simply an internal desire to be better than the next, wardrobing retail is a way to stay ahead of the curb. Many of these women will go to great lengths just to keep the merchandise in pristine condition so they can be assured of getting their full refund later.
Since so few retailers use wardrobing tags, it is easy to get away with. That just adds to these women’s ability to rationalize what they are doing and disregard that this is another form of refund fraud.

Themed Holidays- Wardrobing Retail

When we talk about protecting our clothing inventory from wardrobing retail, we think in terms of price points and special occasions. What we sometimes overlook is holiday attire.
Sure, we might concentrate on wardrobing that goes on around December. There are so many holiday parties and family gatherings that we see an influx of wardrobing to meet the clothing demands of the season.
What we are missing is the lesser holidays that occur almost every month throughout the year. Do you carry a special line of green for St. Patrick’s Day? How about fireworks themed or red, white and blue apparel for the Fourth of July? I would bet that you do.
Unfortunately, buyer’s remorse can often settle in with these holiday themed clothing items. Once the excitement of the day is passed, many shoppers realize the limits of the item they purchased. They know they would feel silly with a St. Pats shirt on in the middle of August, or a Halloween outfit in April.
It is then that these shoppers start to think about returning their purchase to get a refund. Since these holiday items are generally sold within a short span of time, the buyer would be within even a 30-day refund policy.
Using wardrobing tags like the Alpha Shark Tag will help eliminate these holiday specific wardrobing returns to your store.

Two For One Sale- Clothing Security

I had an incident recently where a woman had come into the store to buy a new swim set. She thought that she could be sneaky and basically, con the cashier.
This woman picked out her two-piece swimsuit and put them on the same hanger. Then she pulled the price tag off of one of the pieces. She was trying to make it look like the pieces were to be sold as a set, instead of individually.
We have had more success with selling swim items separately, instead of as a two-piece set.
Since we no longer sell swimsuits in a set, everything is sold as an individual item; it was pretty easy for the cashier to spot what was going on. The cashier explained that it was two separate pieces, and she needed to get the price for both items.
Needless to say the woman barked out something rude and left without her half price swimsuit.
Beyond spotting these kinds of two for one scams, we have found several other benefits to only selling swimsuit separates as individual items, instead of as a set.
Customers who can buy the correct top and bottom sizes they need, and are much happier with their purchase, decreasing the amount of returns we have on these items. We also have fewer issues with miss-matched sets. We don’t have to worry about customers taking two sets in different sizes and piecing together the sizes they need, leaving us with a set that is not the same size, and almost impossible to sell.

Grab What You Can- Clothing Security

A grab and run theft is a pretty basic, and yet highly effective form of theft that affects many clothing retailers. The thieves come into a store, pick up a large quantity of the same merchandise, and run out the door into the waiting get away car.
Sometimes the thieves will load their own arms up as with as much as what they can hold, sometimes they will use the store’s shopping bags or carts to hold the massive quantity of merchandise on their way out the door.
Because these thefts are so big and obvious, the shoplifter will come in and out in as little time as possible- sometimes less than a minute total. All of that is contributed to some detailed planning ahead of the actual theft.
They will have scoped out the store ahead of time to find out where items are kept. They will figure out the best place to park the escape vehicle, and they will know when your employees are most and least likely to notice them.
Because the theft happens so fast, it is basically over before it begins. Your employees probably won’t notice anything until the EAS/ security alarm goes off as the thieves are running out the door with your merchandise. The losses are astronomical due to the large quantity of product being taken at one time.

No More Pin Stripes- Clothing Security

The days of mob bosses and pin striped suits are gone. The new face of organized crime is one of many nationalities, both males and females, and of all groups. The sad reality is that organized criminals are stealing from these stores because the owners and employees are so oblivious to what is going on. The employees are simply looking the other way, or do not realize the full extent of the theft.
What ends up becoming a reality is that many retailers think because no one in a fedora and pin stripe suit is stealing from them they are immune to organized retail theft.
In fact, many organized retail theft cases that I have worked in the past revolve around a suspect that every one in the store has seen. That is because these thieves are in the store on multiple occasions and aren’t scared of employee interaction.
When I show my employees pictures of my suspects so they can let me know if they see them, the employees often are surprised because they do recognize the suspect. They see them frequently, but never suspected a thing. This familiarity only makes it easier for these organized retail criminals to get away with multiple thefts and major financial losses for the unassuming stores.

Keep A Watchful Eye- Clothing Security

During a recent loss prevention consultation with a local clothing store, we knew we needed to have some ways to identify what kinds of thefts were taking place, and what kinds of clothing protection would be effective to stop the inventory losses for happening.
We started by taking a look at the store’s sales reports. We broke the sales down by departments and compared them to last month’s sales and last year’s. We noticed which departments were behind on their sales goals for the year, and which ones did not increase compared to last year.
I explained that if they did not have the right products to sell, then they would not have a chance at meeting or exceeding their sales goals.
Next we looked for signs of theft- specifically for torn of clothing tags. We found several caches of them behind the mirrors in the fitting rooms. We also found them under some shelves in an unattended corner of the store.
One of the most basic solutions was to start using electric article surveillance tags and devices to protect the inventory from theft. Next we put a seal of caulk around the fitting room mirrors, preventing the thieves from sticking price and clothing tags behind them.
Lastly, we moved the tables around to open up the back corner. Now, even when an employee can’t physically be back in that corner, they can still keep a watchful eye from the front of the store.

Is This A Joke- Alpha Shark Tags

What is black and white and red all over? No, it is not a newspaper. It is clarity of your store’s return policy against consumer wardrobing when you use the red Alpha Shark Tags on your special occasion clothing.
One of the best ways to implement a change of policy is to make sure your intentions are clear- make them black and white. When you start to use wardrobing tags, you want to make sure your employees and your customers are clear form the start as to what they are and what they are used for.
Wardrobing tags are plastic clamps that affix to the front of a garment. There is usually a pin that clamps the two sides together securely. Because this is not an anti shoplifting device, the consumer can easily remove the tag with a pair of household scissors.
It is important that the consumer knows these tags are there for one reason only: to stop wardrobing. The consumer also needs to know that if the tag is removed, it will be unable to be reattached. If the tag is removed, the retailer can use its discretion to reject a return even if it is within the store’s receipted return policy.
The best way to ensure the consumer knows this policy is to verbally tell them at the point of sale. The Alpha Shark Tag can also attach a paper copy of the return and wardrobing policy to the garment to further ensure communication with the consumer.

How Much is Too Much? – Clothing Security

How much is too much? When you are merchandising and stocking in your departments, traditionally you want to fill the shelves and the racks as much as you can. It is usually discouraged to have things in a back stockroom. How does this play into clothing security? Can there be too much product on the sales floor?
If you have theft issues, than yes, you can have too much product out. Thieves will take every opportunity you give them. If you put out every piece of high theft merchandise, do not be surprised if the thieves actually take every piece.
Clothing security actually goes beyond just putting clothing security tags on your merchandise. It involves taking a second look at the opportunities your store presents. Can you reduce your shelf quantities and not make a negative impact on your sales? If so, do it. Take those items and back stock them.
By giving your store a different approach to theft prevention than just using Checkpoint tags, you will be better off. Reducing your shelf quantity is just another enhancement to your clothing security.
The right way is to look at your current sales and make a determination if you can make the reductions. If you sell multiples of an item and need a large representation of this item, don’t sacrifice your sales through a shelf quantity reduction. However, those situations are generally more of an exception than a rule.
