Moving Day

If you have ever had to move, you know what a pain it can be. There’s the packing, and hauling, and then once you get everything into your new place you have to unpack it all.

Sometimes, for me, I have a hard time trying to figure out where to put all of my belongings in the new place. At the old house, there was a rhyme and reason. Storage and organizers were tailored to work with that house’s specific nooks and crannies. They don’t always fit the same way in the new home.

You wouldn’t expect all of your things to fit perfectly with every new space or situation, so why would you expect all of your clothing security tags to be a universal fit?

Security tags on clothes only work if they can be attached correctly and in a useful manner. If you are trying to make only one or two types of Checkpoint tags work for every situation, you are missing an huge opportunity.

Just like taking the time to get the right storage pieces for your house to be clean, organized and efficient, you have to specialize your Checkpoint tags to be effective as security tags on clothes.

Checkpoint tags are more than just a hard tag and a soft label. They have spent countless hours making sure the products they have cover the spectrum of opportunities you have for your clothing security needs.

Clothing Security Tags Versus Shoplifters

Almost a tradition, Clothing security tags and a clothing alarm have long defended the retailer against shoplifters. At times the competition is all out war. Fortunately for many companies, clothing security tags are winning the battle. Yet, there are still others that have one hand tied behind their back attempting clothing security.

I once read a book about shoplifting or shoplifters, the name of the slips my memory, but it was written from the shoplifter’s point of view. Included in the text was “how to shoplift”, “what to do if you are approached by managers or security” and much more. There was a whole chapter dedicated to clothing security. The author details specifics about retailers clothing security processes, what they do and don’t do. On several occasions the author tells the readers to stay away from stores with clothing security tags, as they make the task of stealing more difficult. At the time this book was written, the technology of clothing security tags was in its infancy. Mostly, the large box retailers used security tags on clothes.

I found this book interesting and laughable, yet a tool for retailers to use to build a solid defense and clothing security. To this day, it gives good tips on shoplifting activities as the basics of shoplifting have not changed. They want the merchandise, and they want it easily.

Shoplifting is a huge problem for clothing retailers. If you are still operating your stores without security tags on clothes, your time will come. Even if you feel your store is in a “nice” area and don’t experience shoplifting, you’re kidding yourself. Security tags on clothes are your defense and your ticket to increased sales through merchandise protection.

All in one

I am not a space cadet. I am generally very well organized; I have a place for everything and everything in its place. I have to do lists, task lists, calendars, organizers, email reminders, you name it, I have probably got it and used it at some point along the way.

That being said, when you work in retail, anything and everything can potentially happen along the way. In the course of going from my office, around three departments and up a set of stairs to another set of offices, I can be stopped by anywhere from three to thirty people all needing something. If I don’t write it down, in my notebook, I’ll forget, and if I loose my notebook that I did write it down in, well things can start to fall apart easily at that point.

Needless to say, I like to stay organized for the sake of my own survival. That’s why I like things that are easy to use, especially when it comes to clothing security.

Clothing security tags usually have two separate parts to them. It makes it easy to use, but also easy to loose one part of the tag. Half a tag will do nothing for your clothing security. There is a product out called the Alpha Fashion2 Accessory Tag.  It is a Checkpoint tag, lanyard and pin all in one. No parts to loose, super easy to use.

Opening Weekend

If it didn’t feel like summer was here before, it sure does now. Memorial Day weekend is the traditional kick off weekend for the pool season. From community pools to apartments, and public water attractions, this is the weekend we have all been waiting for to begin the swim season.

Retailers, I am sure, felt the surge of swimsuit sales over the last week. Most loss prevention employees felt the surge of swimsuit theft attempts. Clothing security narrows in on micro seasons like swim and beach season. Clothing security tags make their appearance to help protect this transitional inventory.

Clothing security is not just limited to swimsuits though. Any type of beach and water attire seems to fly out the doors. It includes anything from shoe switches (with both incoming flip flops and outgoing), to accessories like sun hats and sunglasses. Don’t forget that if you cross merchandise any sort of sun protection (lotions, oils aloe, etc,) that they can also be easily concealed in a beach bag headed out the door.

If you are unsure of what is going on in your store, keep an eye on your clothing alarms. They will be a good indicator of who is taking product out that they haven’t paid for. Watch for hurried movements, and arms tight against the body to point you in the right direction.

Security Tags On Clothes: Profit’s Best Friend

I have been doing Loss Prevention now for five years and I can honestly say that clothing security is vital in preventing loss since loss prevention cannot monitor everything that goes on in a store. Shoplifting occurs when loss prevention is conducting a surveillance, or on an arrest. Having security tags on clothes aids loss prevention in its mission of maximizing profits for the store.

Clothing security encompasses different strategies but strive for the same goal. A popular example of clothing security tags are checkpoint tags working in conjunction with a clothing alarm. Checkpoint tags are the tags you see on clothing that cause a clothing alarm to make a beeping sound by the store’s exit door.

Having security tags on clothes, a number of clothing security tags on hand to protect your merchandise, and a clothing alarm to compliment the checkpoint tags will drastically increase your shoplifter deterrence capability. Moreover, reduce your store’s loss/shrink. The objective is to assist loss prevention as much as possible. That way loss prevention can catch the shoplifters, and your clothing security tactics will scare off the thieves that loss prevention may miss.

Making Your Business More Profitable with Clothing Security

Many businesses find themselves at a point when the investment in clothing security measures becomes a harsh reality to them.  They might have thought they could go without for a while but eventually the shrink numbers are just too high to avoid it any longer. This investment most often comes in the form of various security tags on clothes or clothing alarms.  The use of clothing security tags is the primary security deterrent used by businesses worldwide.  Clothing security tags also known as electronic article surveillance (EAS) tags provide the user with a physical theft deterrent, which can be used as a part of an overall loss prevention strategy.

These security tags on clothes can act as an active or passive security system. Many clothing security tags are used as an element to work in conjunction with an overall electronic article system.  The electronic article systems also works with various clothing alarms, which can give an immediate notification of removal from the system.  This notification is most often an audible clothing alarm that is triggered.  As a passive system, clothing security tags present themselves as a visual deterrent to shoplifters.  The application of clothing security tags will deter many if not the majority of shoplifters from your place of business.

While working for a major international retailer, I was involved in the planning and implementation of a clothing security strategy.  This strategy was a response to an increase in shoplifting across our brand.  After instituting the clothing security systems, which included clothing alarms and security tags on clothes the company noticed a drastic reduction in clothing theft and better profit margins at the store level.  The use of clothing security had a large and positive impact on profit margins and moral for the company’s stores.

The use of clothing security can benefit both small and large retail businesses.  It allows the business owner to control their loss and lower the bottom line.  This can improve the business profit margins and create a safer environment for employees.

Watch Where You Put That Thing

When you are using clothing security tags to protect your clothing inventory, it is necessary to find a consistent and customer friendly place to attach them. When I conduct my audits, I have seen that some stores do not do a very good job with their consistency. As a result, their clothing security is less than stellar.

One of the key points of good clothing security is to eliminate false clothing alarms. If the alarm is registering constantly, it becomes about as effective as hearing a car alarm in a parking lot. When was the last time anyone took those seriously?

If you put your security tags on clothes in the same place each and every time, then you cashiers all know when and where to look for them. Often the clothing alarms that I respond to have a tag in the improper place.

When we push our cashiers for fast and friendly check outs, we need to understand that if a tag isn’t where it is supposed to be, they rarely will take the time to search the entire garment just to see if there is possibly a tag on there.

By having one set place for security tags on clothes to be attached, you eliminate the guesswork for a cashier. You also reduce the amount of false alarms, and unhappy customers who have been delayed and embarrassed by that same alarm.

What you can’t see

I had a shoplifting apprehension the other day. We thought it was a pretty routine case. A male walked into the men’s wear department and picked up a shirt. He headed into the fitting room, so we sent an employee in to see if he needed any help.

After a few min, the male came back out of the fitting room with the shirt. He then walked into a far corner of the store. We watched as he took the shirt off the hanger, rolled it up tightly, and stuck it under his arm so no one would see it.

As he was leaving the store, the clothing alarm went off. At the time I didn’t think anything of it. We knew he hadn’t paid for the shirt at a register, so there was bound to be a clothing security tag left on it.

After we got him back into our office for processing, I picked up the shirt to catalogue the item number and description. I looked for the price tag to get the information, and as I turned the shirt around in my hand, it struck me that the shirt didn’t have a Checkpoint tag on it.

I then turned my attention to the suspect who was adamant about going to the bathroom. As it turned out, he had stuffed a pair of jeans into his jacket. They had a checkpoint tag which set the clothing alarm off.

Without the tag, we never would have known about the jeans he had stolen.

Tie One On

One often-overlooked piece of clothing that can cause a significant amount of shrink is men’s ties. Right now millions of teenage and adult men are looking for ties. They need them for proms, and commencement ceremonies, job interviews, and don’t forget Father’s day is just around the corner. What Dad hasn’t received the ubiquitous tie as a present there?

Clothing security tags aren’t just for the rest of a man’s wardrobe. Ties need their own clothing security as well. Ties pose a specific risk because they can be easily concealed. Ties can be rolled up and shoved into a pocket, or they can be stretched flat against a shoplifter’s body. Ties can even be tied on and worn out the door.

Because ties can easily range from $30 to well over $100 or even two hundred dollars a shot, any losses can add up quickly.

Clothing security in the way of soft labels is the easiest way to go. While you can use a hard tag, I would caution as to where you attach it. Since most ties are a silk, or silk blend, the EAS tag’s pins can easily catch, creating a run and ruining the tie.

Don’t get caught off guard because you were too busy trying to protect your other merchandise. Don’t forget to tie one on.

Whenever you are ready

I say, “whenever you are ready” to my toddler, a lot. It is probably more sarcastic than it should be, but sometimes it helps me put things back into perspective. It helps me to remember that when I am dealing with her, I am on her time frame, not mine. It is one of the few times that I feel challenged to slow down, not to speed up.

In my professional life, “whenever you are ready” is more like “it should have been done 10 minutes ago”. I put this same urgency into clothing security. Clothing security tags can’t just be put on whenever someone feels like getting around to it. Those are the times that someone will come in and rob you blind.

Shoplifters, especially the professional ones, go out of their way to look for and exploit those situations. All it takes is one unlocked door, one stack of jeans without clothing security tags, and one moment of lethargy to add up to a very costly situation.

Clothing security is all about consistency and timeliness in execution. Even if you have the best clothing security like Checkpoint tags in place, they do no good if they are still sitting in a basket somewhere, instead of on your merchandise.

Make sure that “whenever you are ready” means “do it right, and do it right now”.
