Long Term Payout- Checkpoint Systems

One of my retail companies signed on with Checkpoint Systems for their installation and maintenance of their new door pedestals and the corresponding Checkpoint tags for anti shoplifting.
The contract they signed also included a service contract for their camera system and other video and recording equipment. They thought they were completely covered.
They knew that Checkpoint tags are pretty low maintenance, and the door pedestals generally have minimal issues beyond the annual servicing and testing. Where they really wanted the service contract was with the camera system. It had been patch worked together over the years as funds had become available to invest in a camera or DVR system.
As the cameras would slowly break down, they discovered that Checkpoint Security Systems are limited on what they could do to repair them. Because most of the cameras had been bought at a discount, they were off brands with limited warranties.
The end result was that we spent more to replace the camera systems with proprietary branded Checkpoint Security Systems components. Their products are more reliable and are covered under their service contract making them a more affordable investment over the years. Instead of spending money on unreliable and unserviceable equipment may have saved money initially, but ended up costing much more over the long term.

The First Priority- Checkpoint Tags

Checkpoint Security Systems are pretty straightforward. You start with the installation of door towers at your exit points. These towers are what creates and audible alarm when anti shoplifting tags pass through.
Without the addition of Checkpoint Tags, the door towers would have nothing to activate them, rendering them mostly ineffective. While they would still be a visual deterrent, it wouldn’t take long for shoplifters to figure out they are just for show.
The Checkpoint Tags are hard plastic tags that pin onto merchandise, primarily clothing or accessories. They are also used for zippered merchandise like comforters or sheet sets. By securing the two zippers together, it eliminates the ability to open the bags. Shoplifters will frequently stuff high priced merchandise inside of these bags, like electronics or jewelry, and then pay for the only the sheets or comforter.
The addition of the two component Checkpoint Systems (the towers and the tags) have been proven to reduce shoplifting losses by as much as 85 percent.
A camera system can be used as a deterrent for employee theft and to promote safety within the stores, but is not nearly as effective when used independently, compared to using them with Checkpoint Tags to stop shoplifting.

Why They Work- Checkpoint Tags

An integral part of the process to stop shoplifting is to use Checkpoint systems that include Checkpoint tags. Without these anti shoplifting tools, there have been very few successful resources for retail theft prevention. A large part of the success of the tags comes from how they are made.
The first step to make a Checkpoint tags is to form the hard tag portion through injection mold or vacuum formed. The pins are made from nickel-plated steel.
The second step is to make the resonator. A resonator is a series of tiny metal loops or coils made out of appropriate magnetic metal that will resonate in response to an interrogation signal (formed at the exit door towers).
The resonator is what will trigger an alarm if a tag is left on, or label left activated- a key step in retail theft prevention.
Once the resonator is placed inside the tags, it is time for the locking mechanism to be added. This is the component that will hold the pin in place, preventing shoplifters to easily separate the two sides.
Now that the internal components are complete, the upper and lower sides of the plastic tag are heat fused or ultrasound sealed together completing the tag assembly. Without a tight seal between these two sides, a shoplifter could easily pry them apart, gaining access to the locking mechanism, defeating the tag.

Go Directly To The Source -Checkpoint Systems

Designed for better anti shoplifting and retail theft prevention, source tagged merchandise makes a shoplifter think twice about where and what they are trying to steal.  Since the shoplifters don’t know exactly where the Checkpoint labels are hidden and which items specifically have them, they know they are less likely to defeat them.
Rather than risk being caught by an alarm at the exit doors, the majority of common shoplifters will bypass stealing from retailers that are known to utilize buried source tags.
Source tagging takes the smallest possible, and still effective Checkpoint labels hiding them in seams of clothing, or within the soles of popular athletic shoes. By affixing the Checkpoint labels within the actual product during production, a retailer’s payroll spent attaching hard tags to clothing and other products is reduced.
Conversely, the retailers are also saving payroll and customer check out times as there is no need to remove, sort and recycle these embedded labels. The labels are deactivated using the same deactivator pad used for Checkpoint systems. Additionally, there are no additional supplies or accessories to invest in since the source tagged labels are compatible with existing components to stop shoplifting. The labels will deactivate the same way any other exterior labels do, even though they are buried inside of a garment or product.

A Highly Taxing Situation- Retail Theft Prevention

Did you know that if a shoplifter steals the same item in two different states, it might only be a misdemeanor in one state and a felony in another? It’s important to know, because how and what you can charge a shoplifter with can be an important part of you retail theft prevention.
Anti shoplifting isn’t only about Checkpoint Systems. It is about the message within the community about how your store will stop shoplifting.
One of the biggest determining factors a court has is the dollar amount of the merchandise taken. In some states, a felony charge can happen with as little as two hundred dollars. For others, it can be anywhere from five hundred to a thousand dollars.
Additionally, you may be able to include the taxes on the item when you charge a shoplifter. If that is the case (check your local jurisdictions first) then you may be able to increase the severity of the charges. For example: In one state that I worked, it was five hundred dollars in losses to be considered a felony theft. We had a very desirable item that was frequently stolen; the cost was four hundred and ninety-five dollars. After conferring with local prosecutors, we discovered we could add the tax and the dollar value of the loss then exceeded the five hundred dollar mark.
It wasn’t long before the criminal community discovered that they would be charged with a felony theft instead of a misdemeanor. The losses on this item were greatly reduced thereafter.

Paying Double- Anti Shoplifting

When you have product stolen, your vendors do not care. They might be sympathetic to your plight, but they are not out anything financially. In fact, your vendors are actually profiting by your losses. So why should they worry about your anti shoplifting needs?
If you don’t stop shoplifting, you end up paying for the initial product that is lost and you will pay a second time to replace that same product to have more available for your customers to purchase. When you have to purchase inventory items twice, the vendor gets paid twice. When you have one of those two products stolen, you only get paid once- so who comes out ahead?
This is where you need to leverage your vendors into source tagging your Checkpoint systems. They should be paying their employees to take the time and effort to do the tagging for you, and save you money by not having to use your own labor to install anti shoplifting devices.
If these vendors are resistant, you need to start looking at other suppliers who will source tag for you. There is no reason that your vendors can’t provide source tagging. Since you are the only one suffering from product losses, there is no reason why your vendors can’t help you out with the costs by providing a reliable service to you.

By The Thousands- Retail Theft Prevention

Our thieves knew that we had limited retail theft prevention for expensive saw blades. The end result was that we lost them both frequently and in large quantities. Shoplifters would clear an entire peg worth of blades in just one swift motion. That could be anywhere from a few hundred to a thousand dollar loss all at once.
These particular saw blades came to us in the most minimal packaged plastic clamshells. There was a checkpoint systems soft tag on the outside of the packaging, mostly because there just wasn’t any other place to put it.
It wasn’t until recently that there was better retail theft prevention that could help us mitigate these particularly expensive inventory losses. The Alpha Security Alpha Spider Web’s unique multi-strand steel cable mesh bag presents an excellent visual deterrent.  The Alpha Spider Web still allows for open merchandising while providing anti shoplifting.
Alpha Spider Webs provide breakthrough security for even the most irregular-shaped packages, like our saw blades. Now we can slide the blades into one of these mesh bags. We can still merchandise them on a pegboard like we have been. The difference is the Spider Webs will stop shoplifting better than the soft labels.

The Most Common Loss- Checkpoint Labels

Retail theft prevention is about focusing on the root cause of inventory shrink. Currently the root cause of retailer’s shrink comes from small items. Because they are easy to steal, and frequently have a high dollar value, they make for a prime target for shoplifters.
These small, high dollar items can be found in practically every classification of retailer. Depending on what percentage of your store’s individual shrink comes from small items, it might be beneficial to focus your retail theft prevention around how to stop shoplifting.
Checkpoint labels are a great way to incorporate anti shoplifting tools on these small pieces of merchandise. The Checkpoint labels are available in a variety of sizes and shapes, making them a versatile solution for your store.
These labels work simultaneously with any existing Checkpoint systems. The labels can be applied as a visual deterrent; you can even have the word “alarm” pre- printed on them. They can also be hidden covertly inside of a pocket or a sleeve of a wallet, for example.
The easy addition of these anti shoplifting labels will help reduce a significant amount of theft of these items. You might even see a decrease in the larger items too. As shoplifters discover that the small items are monitored, they might assume that the larger items will be monitored too.

What Do They Want –Stop Shoplifting

Rutgers University criminologist Ronald V. Clarke came up with an acronym for what kinds of products are susceptible to theft. He uses “CRAVED” for any of the hot products that a shoplifter might be interested in stealing. That means they are- Concealable, Removable, Available, Valuable, Enjoyable and Disposable. When you try to stop shoplifting in your store specifically, you should look to what is “CRAVED” to determine your next course of action.
Once you determine which products in your store are “CRAVED” most, you can begin to tailor your retail theft prevention towards those specific items. That could mean installing anti shoplifting systems like the popular brand Checkpoint Systems.
If you need a more immediate action plan to stop shoplifting, you should look to improving your customer service training and awareness. Some reports state that when a customer (or suspect) is greeted immediately upon entering a store, they are 64% more likely to not steal than if they are not greeted. The more customer interaction with your employees, the better that percentage gets- and your sales improve too.
Regardless of any specific application it all comes down to what is “CRAVED” in your store. That understanding can make a significant impact on effectively reducing your in store shrink and other losses.

The Dummy Case- Stop Shoplifting

I had a store that was having an extremely hard time with one of their packaged products being stolen. For an attempt at anti shoplifting the store started to put out dummy cases in place of live product.
A dummy case is basically an empty package that sits on a selling shelf. Sometimes it acts as a display, sometimes the customer brings the empty box to the register- then they get the actual product at check out. Video rental stores notoriously did the latter.
In our situation, the dummy case was more for display and retail theft prevention. Since the actual product was kept separately, we didn’t need to worry about the case being taken. I guess we forgot to let the shoplifters know because the next day I saw an employee putting out a new empty case.
When I asked why, he told me that someone came and took the box. Holding back my laughter, I told the employee it was ok, because the thief had worked really hard to steal an empty case. Imagine their surprise when they got the case open and discovered there was nothing inside.
Retail theft prevention doesn’t have to be complicated; it just has to be smarter than your average criminal.
