The New Look – Jewel Lok

An essential up-selling tool in retail is jewelry. Jewelry is one of the most effective  means of creating a new look with an outfit. Nothing works like accessories to create or complete a new look with a new outfit or add miles to an existing outfit or a new pair of shoes.

Using standard retail anti-theft devices in order to deter and prevent shoplifting of accessories is not 100% reliable. The EAS tags and labels are hidden inside the packaging most of the time and it is a simple matter to remove the jewelry from the packaging.

It’s a  no brainer for the average shoplifter to exit the store with stolen jewelry with little or no risk involved with only the standard devices in place. Enter Jewel Lok.

Jewel Lok is the latest innovation in jewelry retail anti-theft devices.  Jewel Loks tailored for necklaces and bracelets, as well as for hoop and stud earrings make it possible for the retailer to protect every size and type of jewelry in inventory. Each device is designed to create a highly successful, locking mechanism to make sure your jewelry does not walk out the door in the possession of shoplifters.

No more running around the store collecting loose, discarded jewelry packages. Jewel Lok precludes  the product  being removed without the proper detachers.

Prevent Shoplifting without locking everything up

At one time, many retailers who were baffled with finding a system that would prevent shoplifting simply started to lock their small, high dollar, and/ or high shrink items away. This method undoubtedly dramatically reduces shrink; but at what cost in lost sales?

From a customer service standpoint, this system is terribly ineffective AND costly. It is not surprising that this style of loss prevention is often referred to as “lost sales”.

There have been times as a consumer that I have needed to purchase an item  that has been locked up. In today’s meager payroll world, spending time to track down an associate, wait while they find another associate who has the key, and then wait for the item to be unlocked for purchase is highly frustrating and time consuming.

Most consumers in this “culture on the go” either don’t have the time or willingness to spend the time waiting for this process. I have no doubt that I am not the only customer who has walked out of a store without making the purchase because the process was simply taking too long.

Good customer service demands that you are able to simply ask an available sales associate to get whatever product you want into your hands without the drama. Successful retailers are rethinking this strategy and implementing the many versions of retail anti-theft devices designed for better customer service and sales.

10 Long Minutes delivered by 3 Alarm

When one thinks of time, it can feel as if a second is over in a flash. A minute may take a little longer. A minute can also feel like an eternity depending on what is happening in that minute and one’s frame of mind.

Ten minutes can feel like an eternity if one is waiting for an important phone call. Ten minutes can also feel like an eternity if one is standing in line waiting to check out in a store. Ten minutes absolutely feels like an eternity if your store’s 3 Alarm retail anti-theft device is screaming at the shoplifter who just stole your merchandise.

That’s right, a 3 Alarm tag will sound for a full ten full minutes before it ceases its audible alarm.

Hopefully 3 Alarm retail anti-theft devices will prevent shoplifting from the get-go. This system uses a three-step warning to persuade a shoplifter to change his ways if for some reason it does not initially deter the thief.

Step one in the warning system is the perimeter warning. If the tags get too close to the entry doors without being detached, an alarm will sound.

The second step occurs anytime a product is being tampered with by a potential thief. An alarm is generated if a shoplifter tries to disarm or detach 3 Alarm security products without the proper detacher.

Finally, if the shoplifter ignores all warnings and attempts to walk out the door with the product, a 3 Alarm tag will emit a siren for a full ten minutes. That is usually enough time for the shoplifter to come to his senses, drop the merchandise, and allow you to retrieve it before it walks out the door.

Are we talking about Chili – Alpha 3 Alarm

I would like to feel that I am pretty savvy when it comes to technology. There isn’t much that I can’t do or figure out. I am baffled when it comes to what exactly are the Alpha Security Alpha 2 Alarm and Alpha 3 Alarm retail anti theft devices.

I know this isn’t like a 3-alarm fire or a good bowl of 3-alarm chili. It did take me a bit to realize that Alpha Security has come up with different levels of protection against in store theft.

The most basic level is the typical EAS system.  A product has a tag that alarms when the tag passes through the field generated by two towers at an exit door. We see that in just about every big box retailer out there.

That is a good start, but what if you are trying to prevent shoplifting by more experienced shoplifters? Your retail anti theft devices need to step it up a notch. This is where the Alpha 2 Alarm comes in. That is an alarm that comes directly from the retail anti theft device if it is tampered with.

Now if you still need more protection look for the Alpha 3 Alarm. It has the alarm capabilities of both levels one and two. But the biggest difference is that an Alpha 3 Alarm will sound if the retail anti theft device (and the product) leaves the store without being paid for. The alarm will continue to go off for up to ten minutes allowing you time to find where the shoplifter has inevitably discarded the merchandise.

Visit the Loss Prevention Store for Alpha 2Alarm, Alpha 3Alarm, Alpha Fashion2, Alpha Jewel Lok, Alpha Nano Gate,  Alpha Shark Tag, Alpha Spider Wrap and other retail anti-theft devices from Alpha Security to use in conjunction with your Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system that can help you prevent shoplifting in your business.

Wrap Your Head Around It – Alpha Spider Wrap

What is the single biggest reason why employees find discarded packages?  Shoplifters were attempting to eliminate the EAS tags. Most of the experienced shoplifters and professional thieves are aware that EAS tags are kept inside product packaging.

The next question- is there retail anti theft devices, which will effectively keep the product inside the package until it was purchased?

Lucky for us, there is.

Alpha Security makes the Alpha Spider Wrap.

I know that sounds like a complex series of web like strings intricately wrapped around product packaging. It sounds also like a potentially complex process to attach and detach when a customer buys the item.

In reality, The Alpha Spider Wrap is two bands that interlock around a box or other packaging that is susceptible to theft. There is a center disk that connects them and easily secures itself and detaches with the proper equipment.

Hardware stores are starting to use them extensively for power tools. That’s where I first stumbled across them. They have many more applications than just big boxes of power tools though. Just apply them to any boxes that you are having an issue with someone taking the product out of the box.

Most of the common shoplifting groups need a visual deterrent to prevent shoplifting. These retail anti theft devices also create an audible alarm within themselves. The audible alarm sounds when a shoplifter tampers with the Alpha Spider Wrap.

Keep Shoplifters at Bay with Spider Wrap

Spring is well under way and so are many home improvement projects for homeowners.  The beginning of April through the Fourth of July weekend is the busiest time in the home improvement industry. Memorial Day weekend is often compared to Black Friday or Christmas. If stores fail to make their sales during these times, the entire year’s projections can be shot.

For many years I have managed loss prevention in home improvement stores to prevent shoplifting. I have learned that just as these busy seasons see an increase in sales, there is also a corresponding increase in shoplifters and shoplifting attempts.

Spider Wrap is one of the finest retail anti-theft devices that I have ever used to prevent shoplifting. Every store would greatly benefit from the use of spider wraps. They are criss-crossed wires with a center disc joining them as they wrap around a box. Spider Wrap holds the contents of a box inside the box and sounds an alarm if anyone attempts to tamper with the box.

Shoplifters are frequently not well prepared. There is no easy or simple way to deactivate the alarm when a shoplifter comes across Spider Wraps. It is the perfect deterrent because the last thing a shoplifter wants to do is draw attention. Keep it under wraps and your shoplifters at bay.

Protection with retail anti theft devices

Sometimes it takes a few losses to realize how desirable a particular item has become to the shoplifter. We cannot predict which items will be the next hot theft item or which merchandise will need our focus to prevent shoplifting.

The best strategy is to protect our most expensive merchandise with Spider Wrap, Jewel Lok, Shark Tag, or one of the many other retail anti-theft devices that are available on the market before theft can becomes noticeable.

My typical strategy after assessing price points is to focus on things that are easy to steal and easy to sell when determining which items require spider wrap. Any high dollar item with packaging that has a handle accelerates straight to the top of the spider wrap list. Expensive, small, or easy-to-conceal items are typically first on a spider wrap roster as well. Browsing local resale shops or online resale websites also helps to identify which merchandise is being targeted.

When determining the list of merchandise to shark tag, I will typically tag merchandise seasonally. I also notice the return trends for used items on specific types of merchandise. School dance seasons such as prom or homecoming are the most common times that we utilize Jewel Lok and Shark Tag.

The Jewel Lok or Shark Tag affixed to all high dollar items deters customers from purchasing and wearing the item to their big event and then returning afterward.  Leather coats also merit shark tag to prevent seasonal wearers from purchasing an expensive coat at the beginning of the season and returning it when the cold season has ended.

Door Guards as retail anti-theft devices

Larger stores sometimes have the luxury of an employee only entrance which utilizes some type of door guard or watchman.  This system offers a huge advantage in the ongoing battle to mitigate and control internal theft. These watchmen are hired to inspect bags and check refunds as well as to sign off on employee purchases. They are also alert to retail anti-theft devices that may have accidentally (or otherwise) failed to be deactivated.

It is not that easy for most of us. Although there might be an approved entrance and/or exit, there is always a back door which is normally used for trash and receipt of deliveries.  Any security measures used at the back door are designed to prevent employee theft and not to prevent shoplifting.

This back door area offers a huge opportunity for employee theft to occur unless someone is watching this door.  Unfortunately there are many employees who are looking for opportunities to sneak merchandise out the back door.

This is where a device like Nano Gate is the perfect solution. The design is compact enabling it to hang discreetly on a wall and out of the way of damage. The big bulky EAS towers are not conducive to receiving a truck full of boxed-up merchandise. The Nano Gate is a much better fit.

Employing this extra alarm creates one more barrier that an employee attempting to steal must thwart. They are now prevented from sneaking EAS tagged merchandise out the back door and attempting to deactivate tags in the privacy of their own home. A Nano Gate absolutely reduces or eliminates high dollar items walking out the back.

Shopping Bags and Retail Anti-Theft Devices

I have seen it all after 10 years working in the field of loss prevention.  I have seen shoplifters enter a store with not a single bag and leave with multiple bags full of merchandise. This means that they not only left the store with stolen merchandise, but that they also stole the shopping bags in which they put the merchandise.  Many stories can be told by someone who tries to prevent shoplifting.

One thing continues to be true time and time again – shoplifters always go for the easy stuff. The merchandise not protected by retail anti- theft devices is considered the easy stuff. I observed that the majority of shoplifters detained in my stores shoplifted the unprotected merchandise more often than any other merchandise in the store.

Often times the shoplifter admitted during the interview and processing that the merchandise taken was not the merchandise the shoplifter originally planned to steal. They admitted that when they saw a security tag; they would quite simply find something easier to shoplift.  They also stated that they found retail anti-theft devices impossible to remove without damaging the merchandise or injuring themselves.

Shoplifters are not as cooperative as one might think and often they do not give up without resistance.  Because I wanted to prevent shoplifting in the store as well as prevent the dangerous confrontations I had been having, my observations led me to consider that I could likely prevent shoplifting throughout the other areas of the store by increasing the use of security tags.

I began placing the retail anti-theft devices on more and more merchandise in the store in an effort to prevent shoplifting and injury to myself. My plan worked.  I experienced a decrease in the number of shoplifters as well as a tremendous decrease in inventory shortages.

Nano Gate to the Rescue

Anyone who has spent time apprehending shoplifters has either made a bad stop or come really close.  When I say “bad stop”, I’m referring to an apprehension where the suspect did not actually have the product on their person.  The most common scenario is that the LP Agent saw the customer conceal the product, but somewhere along the way the suspect de-concealed the product and the LP Agent missed it. Some days are like that when you are trying to prevent shoplifting.

Potential lawsuits can be filed for false imprisonment, defamation of character, emotional distress, etc. in situations such as this and can become extremely costly to companies.  Many retailers have stopped making apprehensions all together to avoid the risk of liability. A different solution is needed to protect your merchandise and increase profits by reducing losses.

Stores definitely need LP Agents making apprehensions.  This is a strong visual deterrent which helps prevent shoplifting because it sends an unequivocal message that your store is not an easy target for shoplifters.  I also suggest adding retail anti-theft devices to the mix to help your LP Agents make safe and responsible apprehensions.  Retail anti-theft devices will by themselves help prevent shoplifting.  Placing sensor tags, spider wrap, etc. on the product will further deter many would-be shoplifters.

3 Alarm products are a new series of retail anti-theft devices produced by Alpha Security.  I also suggest getting the Nano Gate from Alpha to maximize the 3 Alarm System. 3 Alarm sensor tags do several things.  One, they act as a traditional EAS tag that sets off the door alarm.  When you add the Nano Gate the 3 Alarm tags will also activate an alarm built into the tag itself (once it passes the Nano Gate at the door). An LP Agent should expect the tag to sound from the shoplifter’s bag when a suspect exits with a concealed item with a 3 Alarm tag attached. A sounding alarm confirms their suspicions and makes it safer to make the apprehension. No alarm and they can back off before making a costly mistake.
