Those That Can, Should – Loss Prevention Seminars

In my experience, to be a successful trainer, you have to spend time honing your skills and your education. It helps you become an expert in your subject matter. It also helps you to comprehensively answer the questions that might arise during your Loss Prevention Seminars.

They say that those that can – Do, and those that can’t- Teach.  Sayings like that must have been true at some point to have sustained the momentum to keep the saying alive. However, it isn’t always the case. Take loss prevention training for example. The company’s founder – Bill spent years actually doing, so now he can take his experiences and teach you.

How would you expect someone to effectively answer questions on how to conduct interviews for employee theft situations if the trainer had never conducted an interview before?

They would not be able to give you tips on getting the most beneficial information from that employee. They might also not know that there are certain safety precautions that should be in place in your office before you conduct the interview.

If it were not for the experiences a full career in Loss prevention has given, you would not be getting such a complete education during your loss prevention workshop.

What I didn’t Know – About being your own Loss Prevention Workshop

As a rookie LP agent, I had several manuals and study guides to memorize regarding employee theft and shoplifting before I was released to make apprehensions on my own. There were several months worth of loss prevention workshops that had to be completed prior to my sign off.

When I my loss prevention training was complete, I thought I had prepared for every shoplifting situation that I could come across.

I was itching to not only prove that I had learned everything I needed to from the manuals, but also prove I was just as good as the seasoned agents in my store were. The only thing left was to detain a few shoplifters with an experienced LP, and then I could go out on my own.

It didn’t take me long to figure out how lucky I was to have someone else with me on that first apprehension.

I wasn’t prepared for what my loss prevention seminars didn’t tell me. They didn’t tell me how my adrenaline would kick in wondering if there would be a fight, or if the shoplifter might pull a weapon on me. The manuals didn’t train me on the emotional reaction I would have.

My very first shoplifter was a woman putting merchandise under her six-month-old baby because she couldn’t afford the clothes. Sad. The emotional reactions to the stories shoplifters will give you, can never be trained or prepared for.

Sometimes they will make you feel compassion, sometimes anger. Having someone to help walk you through these untrainable moments is invaluable, and I am lucky that the seasoned agents were there for this step in my loss prevention training.

Left on your own – Loss Prevention Seminars

I was talking to a friend of mine the other day. He was trying to get through a very rigorous set of tests to get his state licensing completed. He had taken them once before, but had failed. Knowing that I had conducted loss prevention seminars covering extensive information in a short span of time, he asked me for some advice.

The advice wasn’t on the information that I had specifically covered in my loss prevention training. Rather it was in how to manage and disseminate the massive amount of information he had to sort through in such a short span of time.

The advice I gave him was to find a way to categorize the information. If he could loop the ideas together into groups, then he could break the information down into smaller sections of information. For example, my loss prevention workshops fell into three main categories of employee theft, shoplifting, and operational breakdowns.

From there, my trainees could spend time focusing on one category until they knew it forwards and backwards. They didn’t need to loop it all into one big mess of information. If I tried to talk about all three situations, but labeled them all under the guise of say, shoplifting, it would have been too much to handle.

Her Time to Shine – A Loss Prevention Training Success Story

One of my most successful moments in my career came from the Loss Prevention Workshops that I did with all of the store’s new hires. There were three main topics that I routinely presented on: employee theft, credit card fraud, and shoplifting.

This isn’t a story about how Loss Prevention Seminars stop shoplifting. This is a little different.

There was an employee who was very clear that the only reason she was working there was to get the employee discount. Policy and procedure were nothing to her, no matter how many conversations were had. She spent more time shopping on the clock than she did working.

One day, she burst into my office with a huge smile on her face. She had in her hand a form that I had implemented to help curb credit card fraud with phone orders. She proudly waved the form at me and exclaimed, “This is credit card fraud, and I know it!! All the signs are there and I remembered you said this in our new hire class. It happened just like you said it would!!!”

Wow. The woman that no one could reach and no one expected anything from, remembered what I had said. That was a pretty good feeling realizing that she had taken away something from that meeting.

More importantly, she did something she never thought in her life that she would do and she was proud because of it. I was proud of her for it too.

Without my passion and that Loss Prevention Training, she never would have stopped that fraudulent phone order. She never would have had that moment to be better than what she or anyone else ever believed she could be. I have to say that I am proud that my training somehow took hold in her mind and all those months later, it came back to her so she could do something positive.

Bring it out of the red – via a Loss Prevention Seminar

If you have a failing business, call an expert! One of my favorite nights of TV watching is oddly enough on a cooking channel. They have a series of shows dedicated to failing restaurants. I think I like the shows because most of the story lines are very similar to what I see in the retail world. Many business owners have to deal with shoplifting and other loss prevention related topics.

A small business owner, who was once successful, now is loosing sales and they can’t figure out why. So the restaurant does a last resort -hail -Mary -pass to the end zone- they call the expert in to find a way to fix the business.

Retail is no different. The loss prevention workshops will help you to identify what your inventory and sales issues are. With some basic loss prevention training experts can point you in the right direction regarding employee theft instead of shoplifting. Not all sales are lost due completely to theft of inventory. Maybe it is a bad hire that is stealing and giving poor customer service to your regular clientele. Or maybe that bad hire is bringing down the morale of the store and you need a way to bring it back up again.

Loss Prevention Seminars are a failsafe way to have an expert help you and your business. Take the time to have an expert bring you out of the red and back on track.

What’s on your Program – Loss Prevention Workshop

Who doesn’t want to have fun while they learn? No one is really interested in sitting in a conference room for hours listening to some random guy speak. Just because I think attending a Loss Prevention Workshop is the most fascinating thing on the planet, doesn’t mean that everyone else does too. We need to be able to enjoy our education in whatever form it might take. It took a two year old to really make me appreciate that simple fact of adulthood.

My two year old has recently started taking an interest in cartoons; both on the computer and on the TV. As a new parent, I was totally against it at first. My child simply should not be in front of anything as bad as a TV, for whatever reason. After looking at what programming is available to her I started to change my mind, especially after seeing so many successful Loss prevention workshops.

While at first it might seem like that is a completely obscure reference point, Let me take a moment to explain. The shows that my daughter is most drawn to are ones that she was learning from. There were colors and numbers, songs to sing and things to learn about. This was, in essence, a way to begin to give her the world – begin her love of learning. She needs to be exposed to the things the world has created and has to offer. And she needs to have fun while learning. Those successful loss prevention workshops I mentioned earlier- They were successful because they were fun and educational too!

Why Would You Reinvent the Wheel? – Loss Prevention Training

There is no need to reinvent the wheel when it comes to loss prevention training. Most of the tactics used by or to prevent shoplifters are pretty universal. It is just a matter of being aware of them and knowing how to apply them to your store.

Loss prevention seminars give you a chance to talk about your experiences with theft. How you handled it, maybe something that you started that worked, and maybe something that didn’t work. While you can never find it on a syllabus or meeting agenda, making contacts was always one of my favorite parts of attending a loss prevention workshop.

Loss prevention training provides an opportunity to have an open conversation about these issues. If you have worked retail for any span of time, you will at some point have come across a shoplifter or an employee theft situation. Even if you didn’t see the shoplifter, you were probably aware of their presence in your store at some point.

Other attendees have a chance to regale their stories as well. That’s one of the best parts of a workshop. When the informal training comes into play, you can learn from each other’s hands on experiences. I have always felt that most attendees learn more from these impromptu discussions than they do at a long drawn out training forum.

Why am I here? – Loss Prevention Training

There is nothing worse than sitting through a Loss Prevention training program and discounting the presentation as it is going on. I think we have all been there, hoping to find a way to take a suggested method and apply it, all the while knowing that the criteria or resources do not apply to your specific situation.

By making the subject matter relevant to the audience, your employees are more likely to walk away from the presentation with useful knowledge that they can actually apply.

For many store employees that are faced with the task of attending a loss prevention workshop, they might feel like they are in for an extremely boring presentation about information that either doesn’t apply to them, or they will never have a practical use for.

Unfortunately, In some cases that might be true. There are many presenters for loss prevention seminars that drone on incessantly about building employee theft cases or how to stop shoplifting. Neither of which may apply to your average store employee.

A good presenter, however, will give ways to deter shoplifters and how customer service can curtail shoplifting. Good loss prevention seminars will also give ways to stop and prevent employee theft through operational controls and awareness.

By making the subject matter relevant to the audience, your employees are more likely to walk away from the presentation with useful knowledge that they can actually apply.

Put Passion In Its Place – Its Easy in a Loss Prevention Workshop

My husband hates meetings. I always chuckle to myself anytime he has to go to any sort of meeting, regardless of what it is. I have to agree with him, though. Meetings generally are no fun. It is a full day of being stuck in a lightless room, with monotonous presenters and ill prepared presentations. The only meetings I ever looked forward to, were the ones I presented at.

I think it was because not only did I have control over the pace and quality of the meeting, but I had an exciting topic to present about: shoplifting and employee theft.

Giving loss prevention seminars was fun because I could make it fun. I was passionate about my chosen field of work, but I was also passionate about helping people learn. You really need both.

A Loss Prevention workshop is nothing more than any other boring meeting if you don’t have someone who has passion. They can get the attendees riled up and interested in what is being said. If your employees are interested in the meeting, you have a better chance of them actually retaining parts of the presentation.

That is why they are at the Loss Prevention training to begin with. I doesn’t matter how many times you say the words shoplifting or employee theft. If your employees don’t retain the information then it was just a waste of time for all involved.

It’s No Accident- Loss Prevention Seminars

I had a friend that was in a car accident. It was a minor fender bender, but she was still pretty shaken up over it. The responding police officer told her that there were two kinds of drivers out there. There were the ones who had been in an accident, and there were the ones that will be in an accident. Employee theft is no different.

There are two types of businesses – ones that have had an employee steal from them, and the ones that will have an employee steal from them. If you have been in the first category, you know how devastating that can be. If you are in the second category, well, maybe you should consider pumping up your knowledge about employee theft by getting some loss prevention training or taking a loss prevention seminar.

In the loss prevention workshops, you will learn about preventative measures, impressions of control, and common methods of theft. No two cases are identical, but there are common ways that employees steal, and common practices that you can put into place to prevent employee theft.

A good loss prevention seminar will teach you the basics of case building and options for the resolution of the case. They may also be able to provide insight into your specific state’s criteria for a legal or civil case to be made.
