My Best Friend was a Shoplifter…

Back when I was in grade school, I had a friend that I would go to the mall with. She always wanted to go check out some amazing sale. I never really saw the sales she did. I also never saw her buy anything, but the next day she would show up at school wearing something new.

I was pretty young and naive at that point. I didn’t figure out until much later that my friend would be shoplifting clothes when we would go into the fitting rooms. Back in those days, there wasn’t much for retail clothing security and anti-theft devices were almost non-existent.

Much has changed over the years, and it’s for the best. I hate to think about what would have happened if she had been caught while we were out. Would I have been drug into her mess too?

If there had been anti-theft devices like EAS and cheap tags and cheap labels in use, than maybe she wouldn’t have been as tempted to steal.

My First Apprehension…

I was alone at my first LP job when I started watching a woman on camera that entered with a crumpled, empty shopping bag. The previous day I finished training and was released to detain shoplifters. I hadn’t made a solo arrest yet; I was incredibly nervous and secretly hoped this was nothing. I wanted my first stop to be with another agent to assist with surveillance and back me up during the apprehension. Although I could feel myself shaking, I went to the sales floor to perform live observation; after all, it was my responsibility to maintain the store’s clothing security.

After locating the customer, I watched her check merchandise for Checkpoint tags and select a handful of tops without clothing alarms. She placed them on a rounder, held the shopping bag under the merchandise, and slipped each item off its hanger so it fell in. With this, I realized I must stop her when she exited. As she headed to the door, my nerves took over and I was hit with a wave of nausea. I was going to be sick and made a beeline for the restroom. I went to find the subject when my queasiness had passed, but of course she was gone. This wasn’t my proudest moment and while my boss was kind about it, I felt I had failed to preserve my store’s clothing security.

Employees can make mistakes; they call in sick, they take breaks, and no one can afford hiring enough people to watch all merchandise. Retailers that understand this utilize clothing security tags to fill in the gaps that naturally occur if a mission as significant as clothing security is left only to people. Clothing alarms are most effective when used uniformly and on merchandise that would hurt the store the most to lose. That way, if a rookie investigator has anxiety, it won’t break the business.

If you’re going to shoplift at least know what you’re doing…

I had a shoplifter the other day that did not think things through very clearly. While shoplifting, in general, is not the smartest move in the world, some shoplifters at least try to come up with a smart plan to get out the door undetected.

This woman had picked up a pair of jeans and then went into the fitting room to try them on. She was very nervous and jumpy every time the employees tried to assist her. She was in the fitting room for an awfully long time to try on just one pair of jeans.

Well, the next thing we know, this woman is walking towards the door. While we could not see any tags, we did notice the clothing security retail anti-theft devices still attached to the bottom of the jeans she was wearing. We also saw her old pair of jeans rolled up and stuffed (mostly) into her bag.

It was quite clear that the clothes she was wearing belonged to us. It was not a very sneaky attempt at shoplifting and she was quickly apprehended.

Keeping your Clothing on a Leash…

When you think of clothing security, you generally think about retail anti-theft devices like the hard EAS tags, or the soft labels. Both are commonplace in retail.

The soft tags are generally embedded into a price label, or might be slid into the pocket of a wallet, or adhered to the brim of a ball cap.

The hard tags are a little more bulky, and are made in two parts. There is the tag and the pin, which needs to pierce the garment or accessory to attach.

Sometimes, neither of these are good retail anti-theft device options for clothing security. Soft tags can be removed depending upon placement. Hard tags can rip and snag delicate or stretchy fabrics.

Having a third option is ideal for getting the most usage out of your cheap labels and cheap tags. A lanyard attachment can loop around these problematic pieces of merchandise.

Lanyards can keep your clothes on a leash without the risk of damage or having a defeated EAS soft tag.

Fitting room theft…

While employed as an agent for a department store, one issue that we never stopped confronting was fitting room theft. It might be assumed that the amount of shoplifting that occurs in this location would probably be similar, if not equal, to the restroom because both places offer privacy. However, carrying an armful of clothing into a designated area for trying on apparel isn’t devious at all, whereas smuggling merchandise into a lavatory should raise some red flags.

Shoplifters are normally prepared for a store’s fitting room procedures and have an arsenal of techniques to thwart clothing security efforts. Even if an attendant is diligently counting merchandise in and out, they may have apparel double-hung on one hanger, have items hidden inside other items, or “swap-out” their old clothing for a new article without causing a clothing alarm. So how can retailers reduce their vulnerability to fitting room theft and beef up their store’s clothing security when thieves are continuously improving the way they steal?

The best and most-widely used solution for fitting room pilferage is the application of clothing security tags or security tags on clothes. Depending on a store’s needs, they’re available in an array of sizes, shapes, and styles. In the security industry, Checkpoint tags are unsurpassed for good reason: for over forty years they have worked with retailers to provide innovative and technologically-advanced solutions to address theft. Even if a customer going into the fitting room looks suspicious, retailers can be confident that Checkpoint tags won’t let their merchandise disappear in there.

Protect your clothes and accessories!

I have a friend who is an absolute clothes nut. She loves to shop, she loves to buy, and she loves to accessorize. It’s a good thing that she also works in a retail environment where she gets to sell clothes on a daily basis.

I was talking to her recently when she confided that they were having an issue with their accessories department. They keep finding empty packages, but they aren’t sure what to do about it. They never seem to see anyone suspicious lurking about.

I asked what type of clothing security they have in place. She said they have the standard retail anti-theft devices on all of their clothes. When I asked about the accessories, she paused, and realized there wasn’t any in place.

I told her, one of the easiest things to do was to make it as obvious as possible that there was some sort of retail anti-theft devoces, even if it was just a camera. I also told her this would be a great area to use some cheap labels and cheap tags to drive the point home.

Are you Elastic?

In economics, there is a definition of elasticity that talks about how a reduction in the price of an item (say clothes) is reduced, and the seller’s revenue increases. It sounds kind of crazy until you understand how it works. How can you make more money by lowering your prices right?

Basically, it explains how a retailer can make more money by putting an item on sale if they then sell more of the item than they normally would.

What if you don’t have the clothes to sell because they keep walking out the door? Are you still elastic? The answer is probably not, because you won’t have the quantity of clothes in place to make the sales worthwhile.

Retail anti-theft devices are a great way to utilize clothing security methods to help you stay elastic. There is nothing worse than a customer specifically going to a store looking for a specific sales item and finding out that they are all sold out.

It’s even more disappointing, as an owner or manager to realize you have lost out on those precious sales because you no longer have the items in, due to theft.

Protecting Winter Clothing with Clothing Security

The lower the temperature the higher the demand for cold weather clothing to beat the holiday chills.  Many shoplifters expect some type of clothing security and prey on the most vulnerable items.  Placing security tags on cloths is a great visual deterrent for shoplifters.

While working for a major retailer there were three (3) types of clothing security tags I used frequently during the busy holiday shopping season; checkpoint tags, a clothing alarm or ink tags – sometimes more than one.

Checkpoint tags are great for securing long sleeve items such as turtle necks, long-sleeve polo shirts and athletic wear.  If I wanted to secure a bulky item such as a jacket, I always used a clothing alarm or ink tag.

A couple of years ago the major retailer I worked for had a problem with homeless customers stealing jackets so they decided to increase clothing security by placing security tags on cloths. I placed a 3alarm on our high end leather jackets and ink tags or checkpoint tags on our bulky cold weather jackets.  When a customer attempted to exit the store without purchasing the jacket a door alarm would sound off.  If the customer attempted to remove the ink tag before they left the store they would rupture the ink cartridge.

The fact that the merchandise was protected by security tags on cloths caused would be shoplifters to think twice before stealing.  We finished the quarter with great sales that year and clothing security tags gave us an added layer of protection against jacket theft that helped us reduce the number of thefts by 75% that winter.

Sometimes the simple solutions work best…

Why anyone would ever try to come up with some elaborate, nearly impossible to execute plan to reduce shrink, is beyond me. I routinely ask my department heads to create working solutions to help solve their department’s shrink.

I have seen some doozies, let me tell you! I have even asked them, if they really think that their plan will work, and they look at me and reluctantly say no. Sometimes, it just really doesn’t need to be complicated.

On one hand, it helps create accountability when they have to execute their own plans, versus something I came up with. Secondly, they are in their departments every day and understand the subtle nuances and challenges they face.

When your clothes are walking out the door without being paid for, it’s time to use a realistic solution to you clothing security problem.

Using retail anti-theft devices is one of the easiest ways to combat shrink. If the shoe fits, then wear it. If the retail anti-theft device prevents theft, well, then use it!
