Is your thief trying every excuse they can?

When you catch someone stealing clothes, they always try to talk their way out of it. I have found over the years that one of the more popular ways of doing this is to claim a need to use a restroom, much like children do when they don’t want to go to bed.

On occasion, it might be a real excuse, and it’s one that shouldn’t be ignored completely but more times than not it is an excuse to avoid punishment a little longer. If a shoplifter asks to use a bathroom, be accommodating, but also try to stall until the local authorities arrive (if you are prosecuting). They are much more knowledgeable about handling such situations.

When a shoplifter tries to steal items and isn’t able to get the anti -theft devices off, they might try to conceal them on their person. If the shoplifter goes into the privacy of a restroom stall, they will try to ditch those items and claim that you are wrong in apprehending them and even threaten legal action against you or your company.

Clothing security does not take into consideration the human element, so be careful, and be observant. Recover the merchandise first, and then allow use of a bathroom. After they are out of the stall (no need to violate their privacy inside the stall), make a quick check to ensure no other clothes or anti-theft devices were discarded.

Did you make all the right investments?

Do you know how to respond to an alarm going off in your store? If you are using a Checkpoint system for your clothing security, you probably already do. The next question is do your employees know?

Chances are, they may not. There is an element of confrontation involved when you respond to an alarm. It is not the same type of confrontation that a salesperson selling clothes is using to approach a customer.

You’re already invested in your clothing security system and you cheap tags and cheap labels but did you make sure to invest in the training for your employees to know how to use these valuable tools? You might find that one of the reasons your alarms are going off and not being attended to is that your employees are simply not comfortable with that confrontation. They are probably unsure of what to say, and unsure of how the customer is going to react.

The best way to handle this is to take a copy of your company policies and run through the response script with your employees. Give them a chance to approach you acting as a customer. Give them some real life examples of what to expect. I’ll bet your alarm responses start to go up after this training.

Even Children’s clothing can go missing

When you work in soft line retail shrink used to not be a huge concern in children’s clothing. The main focus was on products like jewelry or leather coats, jeans and athletic shoes. Children’s clothes were never on any big watch list, until now.

I don’t know if it is because more people are out of work, or because kids clothes are getting more expensive, but it seems like our children’s department is suffering more and more every day. If you haven’t already, I would suggest starting to use clothing security tags on children’s clothes.

For the baby and toddler clothes, it would be easy to use checkpoint tags for clothing security. Since these items typically are not tried on in the store (like adult’s clothing) a hard tag would not impede the shopping experience in any way.

For bigger kid’s clothes, clothing security would be easy with a soft tag. The non-adhesive tags could be slid into a pocket. Soft tags can also be attached as a price tag or barcode along with a hard tag for extra protection.

There are multiple Checkpoint tags to choose from to facilitate proper tagging based on the type of clothing.

Adding Insult to Injury…

Over the years of catching and apprehending shoplifters, I have found that there are other losses that might not be picked up on during the initial contact with the shoplifter.

Let me give you a few examples. When I worked security for a home improvement chain, it was not uncommon for a shoplifter to pick up a bucket and stuff it full of 18V drill batteries and then walk out the door. The cashiers never thought a shoplifter would steal a bucket, so they just assumed it was theirs.

When I worked clothing security, I saw the same thing with purses and book bags. These bags would be packed full of clothes that had not been paid for, yet the shoplifters would calmly walk out the door with not only the stolen clothes, but the stolen purse or bag.

Not only were these people robbing us blind but were even stealing their means of carry-out. That is what I call adding insult to injury.

Cheap Labels are great for hats!

I had a shoplifter last week and all he really wanted was a new hat. He came into the department and started to try on every hat he could get his hands on. Gradually, he started to narrow down his selection to just a few hats.

What caught my eye wasn’t that he was making a huge mess out of the discarded hats, it was how he was looking at the hats he liked.

He wasn’t comparing the hats to his clothes, or his shoes. He wasn’t even looking at them in the mirror any more. Most guys, when they are looking to buy a ball cap, will play with the bill, and try to get just the right curve to it. This guy seemed to be stretching the bill out, as if looking for something on the inside. At this point it was obvious that he was looking for Anti-Theft Devices. We had cheap labels  and cheap tags on all of the hats but he eventually found one that had been missed.

I guess he finally decided that it was free of anti theft devices and put the one he liked on his head. He bee lined for the door, and headed out. We stopped him, and recovered the hat.

Did you realy think you would get away with that?

I never fail to see something new in my internal cases. Sometimes it makes me laugh. Sometimes I think about how much more productive they could have been if they had only used their cleverness for good instead of evil. Sometimes I just look at the employee and sigh. That’s how this last case was, one big “did you really think you could get away with that” sigh.

Clothing security is a huge focus in our stores. A lot of inventory loss has been avoided because of our diligence. We do a great job using Checkpoint tags to coincide with our clothing alarm. With security tags on clothes, the losses we do incur are easier to track. This is where this particular employee messed up.

I was reviewing our report for clothing alarms that happened before and after hours. One incident had shown up. When I reviewed on our CCTV system, it showed an employee leaving with one of our brand new jackets and a pair of pants on. I reviewed her during the day and saw that she had come in to work with a different outfit on, and no bag. When I reviewed for a purchase, there wasn’t one.

This employee had stolen a brand new outfit for her date that night. She said she was going to return it, which is why she didn’t bother to take the clothing security tags off. This employee simply thought it wasn’t a big deal to “borrow” clothes from work?!? If it hadn’t been for the clothing security tags, the clothing alarm wouldn’t have gone off. It was an easy case; you just followed the obvious trail she left behind.

Clothing Security for Out Of Package Problems?

OOP, or Out of Package items can create unnecessary work and margin loss to items that often don’t have a huge mark up to begin with. Clothes that come in packages, like socks or dress shirts, are common out of package items.

All too often I go into stores and see rounders full of shirts haphazardly thrown onto available hangers, marked at an additional discount. Socks are even worse. Someone has to take the time to hang tag them together, hope it stays, and then put out on the same hooks as the nicely packaged ones.

Most of the time OOP occur because a customer wants to try an item on for fit, or feel the quality of the clothes. Less frequently, but still a problem are those that open a package to take out one of the components and steal it. The problem is that customers seldom want to pay full prices for an OOP item. The only way to prevent loss on these items is to use clothing security. Cheap Labels and Cheap Tags are great for these types of items.

Maybe it is the tie that comes with the shirt, or a special accessory included on a specific packaged deal. Retail anti-theft devices can be attached to these items prior to a theft, or they can be added afterwards to these out of package items.

What’s your resolution?

I love hearing about people’s New Years resolutions. Some of them are so far fetched you know they won’t make it through the first week. Some of them are pretty typical, you know the ones, eat right, drink less, workout more. That’s the one that perks my ears when I hear employees talking about it,” workout more”.

Now I think it’s amazing to want to take charge of your life and your health. I also know that about this time of year, we get in fresh new shipments of athletic attire and inevitably we have at least one employee stealing their way into their New Year’s Resolution.

It’s because of this trend that I emphatically start putting security tags on clothes starting with the athletic wear. I know that clothing security tags are strong visual deterrent to the theft of that particular item. I like that the clothing security tags do most of the work for us. The majority of the employees stay honest because they don’t want to contend with beating a clothing alarm.

Clothing security doesn’t just stop there for us. We also talk about the high shrink departments every chance we get. Just as shoplifters avoid being noticed, employees are less likely to steal if they know the area is under constant surveillance.

After the initial resolution has either wilted or become a habit, I can put to rest my worries of protecting our athletic wear. I know its now time to move on to protecting the next target.

Always keep an eye out for the Silver Lining…

For every bad or unfortunate situation, they say there is a silver lining. It’s just a matter of having to look hard enough. In clothing security, it is almost a literal truth. The silver lining we look for is an aluminum foil lining in shoplifter’s clothes or bags.

The purpose of using a foil lining is to try and prevent the anti theft devices on clothes from activating as a shoplifter passes through the EAS towers positioned at the exit doors. The shoplifter can sometimes slip out without the audible alarm drawing attention to them, if the EAS alarms do not register the anti-theft devices through the lining.

Most states have some sort of laws against the use of shoplifting tools like bolster bags and foil linings. The problem is that in order to enforce this type of law, the perpetrators need to be caught. That generally happens only after they have been apprehended for shoplifting. It will trump up their offenses upon arrest, but understand that it is not a proactive piece of legislation. Therefore, the best way to avoid falling victim to these types of devices is to keep a vigilant watch on your shoppers particularly during the busy holiday seasons when they are carrying more than one shopping bag.

Thieves will take advantage of almost any opportunity…

I have a lot of hardworking, good people that are employed in my stores. There are quite a few of them that continually go above and beyond for whatever the stores or the managers need. Because of that sort of loyalty, it really makes me mad to see outside “customers” take advantage of them.

We have a great lady who helps our clothing security stay up to date by doing spot checks on our retail anti-theft devices, and greets customers at the door as they come and go.

Well, one day a man was walking with a cane and trying to push his shopping cart out the door. As soon as he walked in front of her, he tips the cart over and falls on the ground.

Being the good person she is, our associate immediately went to help him up and make sure he was ok. Well, as she bent down to offer a helping hand, another male ran out the door setting the alarm off with his arms piled high with clothes.

We decided to go back over the CCTV footage from the parking lot to see if we could get a license plate number and when we scrolled back to the point where the thief entered the store we were astonished to find he and the man with the cane walking into the store together. The two were in cahoots and took completely advantage of our associates’ helpful nature. Luckily we passed the surveillance off to our other stores and the pair was apprehended trying to pull off the same job as again.
