Security tags on Clothes Work To Keep Profits In Stores

Putting security tags on clothes can really help maintain profitability and makes a really good store plan. Believe it or not there are still many retailers that attempt to operate their business without any form of clothing security, putting both the overall store safety and profits in jeopardy.

How can clothing security or clothing security tags affect store safety? It’s pretty straight forward. When you have a clothing business and the merchandise is easy to steal, meaning there are no security tags on clothes, you will attract shoplifters. In the shoplifter community, there is communication via websites, books, personal and other forms that identify stores that are “easy”. Through this spread, the unprotected store becomes a target for theft and more. Increasing the instances of grab and runs or persons wanting to get away from the manager that’s confronted them, they flee, knocking down customers, assaulting employees and more.

Don’t be the irresponsible retailer. As a loss prevention professional, I have seen many shops lose valuable merchandise, profits and growth all because they refused to buy into any clothing security. In fact, had these stores simply put clothing security tags on their merchandise, much of the issues in their stores could have been prevented.

Simply put, clothing security tags offer a conspicuous presence to both the consumer and the thief. One of my favorite forms of clothing security is the clothing alarm. As clothing security tags go, a clothing alarm is tops in protection. You can be on one side of your store, and the second a thief tampers with or attempts to remove the clothing alarm, an audible alarm activates making the thief immediately flee.

If you are in the business of turning a profit, consider clothing security and security tags on clothes.

Experience Summer Profits with Clothing Security

School is out, summer is here, and people are taking vacations.  They are traveling, maybe taking some time off of work, and may have a little bit of extra free time on their hands.  So that may mean increased customer traffic in your business.  And it could also mean increased loss due to shoplifting.

The more people that come into your business, the more likely that some of them could be shoplifters.  We’d like to have that increase of business so we can be profitable, but at what cost if so much merchandise, especially clothing, is walking out of the door without being paid for?  Clothing security and security tags on clothes can help increase your profits and your in stock during these summer months, while at the same time reducing the loss you experience due to theft.

Clothing security tags are affixed to the clothing that you sell.  They are a visual deterrent to the shoplifter, showing that shoplifter that you are serious about clothing security.  Your employees can also easily remove security tags on clothes when the clothing is purchased, but they are not so easily removed if the thief wants to hide in a corner of your business and try to remove the clothing alarm.  Most won’t even try, and those that do will probably give up.  It is much easier to move on to the next unprotected business that does not have clothing security.

Take advantage of the summer months by actually having merchandise displayed for your customers, instead of empty racks left behind by your shoplifters.  Clothing security can help you out with that by protecting what you have worked hard to be able to display and sell.

Clothing Security Adds Promise to New Retailer

A new retailer opened the doors to their new location without clothing security. This business was put together well, yet lacked the necessary security tags on clothes it needs to operate in its current location.

Working for this new retailer, my team and I helped them put to together a clothing security program that would help prevent theft from happening in the first place. First, we showed the owners clothing security tags and offered to install them on a limited number of items and test out the product. With them in agreement, we put security tags on clothes and set the merchandise for open sell.

As a two week period went by, the store claimed to have seen little theft occur in the merchandise, yet other areas of the store were hard hit. In fact, the store owner was so impressed with the performance of the clothing security tags, he placed an order with the vendor that very day.

As time went on, I monitored the progress of this retailer. I looked at the clothing security of other comparable sellers in the area and only a few could match the clothing security tags program this store had. One other retailer did stand out, as they were using a clothing alarm to protect their garments. I really think the clothing alarm is a cool feature. To this day, I get a laugh when I remember the look on the face of the first shoplifter attempting to remove the clothing alarm… the surprised look when the alarm activated.

It has been a couple of years now, this retailer has opened 2 more stores and is continuing with their success and they agree that clothing security tags helped boost their profits and keep them in the black.

The True Costs of Clothing Security

Is clothing security expensive? A question I hear all the time from managers and owners. One that is somewhat easy to understand and explain. I enjoy showing the cost versus benefit scenario with those wanting to listen.

Clothing security is more than an investment; it is a psychological tool for both employees and customers alike. The morale of employee is affected when they see theft occur in their stores, yet nothing is done to stop or prevent the incidents from occurring. Customers that steal, and get away with it, will most certainly be back to take more. They’ll also tell at least one friend how easy it was to steal from your store and those friends tell their friends and so on. Soon, you’ll realize the true costs of clothing security.

A simple fix or deterrent to theft is clothing security tags. Clothing security tags attach directly to the garment and are visible as soon as the potential thief enters the department. Imagine yourself as a thief, entering a store and going to your favorite spot. You reach for merchandise and notice something different. You have been in this store many times before but have never seen this new little device attached before. You look around, and see all other clothing items with the same device. Security tags on clothes have ended your fun.

It’s true. Security tags on clothes will get the same reaction from most any shoplifter that has been hitting your stores, untouched. As a retail professional, I always recommend security tags on clothes for any business looking to decrease theft, increase profits and keep a sound, responsible business.

One last item I’ll mention is a clothing alarm. One of the coolest features of clothing security tags is this little audible alarm. The clothing alarm works by making a high toned alarming sound when a shoplifter attempts to defeat the tag. Security tags on clothes are MUST for any retailer analyzing the true costs of clothing security.

Clothing Security is Available in both Cities and Smaller Communities

The retailer I work for is in a rural community.  We are not, however, immune to theft.  Shoplifters still impact our business, and will impact your business, no matter where it is located.  That is unfortunately the nature of the business that we are in.  More people than we would like to believe are involved in shoplifting, either for their own use, for the thrill, or possibly even for organized retail crime.

If your business is one that sells clothing, you have probably noticed already that clothing is considered a high theft item.  To help prevent the theft of the clothing you sell, clothing security can be an option.  Shoplifters want to be able to steal your merchandise and make a quick getaway.  They do not want to have to fight to remove security tags on clothes that they wish to steal or risk setting off a clothing alarm.

Clothing security, such as clothing security tags, can be attached to your high end and high theft clothes.  These tags are nearly impossible for thieves to remove, but are easily removed at the time of purchase by your store employees.  The clothing security tags can then be reused on more merchandise.  That allows your merchandise to be better available for your paying customers.

Metro businesses can have more theft due to shoplifting than rural areas.  Wherever your business happens to be located, you have options available for clothing security.  You do not have to sit back and watch your merchandise walk out of your door.

An investment in clothing security tags is an investment in high profits and reduced shrink.  That is well worth the effort, just to keep the shoplifters moving on to the next business.

Clothing Security is A Good Morale Boost

Many retailers forget how clothing security affects not only the sales of the stores and business but the employees as well.

One of the best ways to drive your sales and business is to keep your employee happy. Happy employees lead to better customer service, more productivity, less claims of injuries and an overall pleasant environment for everyone. So how can you best impact the morale of employees? Believe it or not, clothing security can help.

As an experienced loss prevention manager, I have seen the negative impacts of stores without clothing security and how it affects employees. When employees continuously witness shoplifters running out of the stores or employee theft and nothing being done about it, it creates problems. Clothing security helps cut out the shoplifting and employee theft aspect.

Imagine your business with clothing security tags and a clothing alarm. The employees take an active role in placing the security tags on clothes and building the clothing security program. Assigning the responsibility of putting security tags on clothes to various employees gives them the chance to lead. It makes them part of the team and gives them a sense of pride when they see their program being executed.

Security tags on clothes and a clothing alarm provide the visual presence necessary to deter most shoplifters and keeps the merchandise in the stores and available for purchase. There are a lot of benefits to clothing security tags. Specifically, their impact on the overall impressions of control of the business, employees love being part of the solution.

If you are a business owner and have not yet transitioned to a clothing security tags program. Get with it. Security tags on clothes will show you progress and will positively impact your business if done correctly and followed through with. In fact, I believe it’s somewhat negligent for a clothing retailer to not provide some sort of clothing security tags program as these stores invite crime. Security tags on clothes work, in more ways than one.

Watch Out for Increased Profits With Clothing Security

A type of theft that I’ve seen recently at the retailer I work for is one in which the shoplifter purchases a cheap item, in recent cases a mailbox, and then walks out onto the sales floor with the purchased item. The shoplifter then adds other items to inside the mailbox and walks out of the store. If receipt checked, the customer can show the receipt for the mailbox.

If some shoplifters would just use their creativity for good instead of evil…but that is simply not the case. This type of theft can be prevented, even if your business sells clothing. If you Use clothing security tags it would be a risky to attempt this type of theft due to the chance of a clothing alarm going off if the shoplifter walks out of your front door.

Clothing security has to be on the forefront of business owners’ minds in order for them to experience more profit than loss. Security tags on clothes are a worthwhile option for minimal investment and can reduce such losses that can result from the actions I discuss above.

Clothing security tags can be attached to your high end or high theft merchandise, and are removed at the time that the clothing is purchased. Your cashiers can easily remove clothing security tags using a key, and then the tags are able to be reused. Your in stock for your honest customers improves, which drives sales. This is especially important in these tough economic times when every sale matters more than ever. Every prevented theft due your use of clothing security will be a component in maximizing those sales.

Security tags on clothes can also offer a visual deterrent that is very important for profitability also. Profit, not loss, is what your business needs, and will experience when you use clothing security.

Clothing Security Tags Prevent Shoplifting

The store associates placed clothing security tags on the merchandise as directed by their manager. Each of the clothing security tags were attached cleanly, neatly and positioned to be visible by customers.

The store was not yet open, and the manager was preparing for the day. As a seasoned professional working in a store in a tough area, she knew the importance of clothing security and determined to reduce shrink in her store and meet her sales numbers for the week and year. The manager spoke to other associates in the building and gave her routine morning speech. Touching on the topic of clothing security, the manager said clothing security tags helped protect merchandise in their store daily, and that it was very important for all associate to understand the need for clothing security and how it affects the overall performance of the store. She asked a couple of questions about clothing security tags, and got back the right answers. Her associates know clothing security is a big piece of the business.

The store opened for the day, the associates went to work and the manager got on with her administrative duties. Feeling comfortable about the associate awareness, she walked the sales floor and inspected the various areas requiring clothing security tags. She greeted customers, assisted others and help restock merchandise where needed.

Security tags on clothes combined with a solid manager, and receptive staff makes clothing security that much easier. Shoplifters like stores with no security, employees that are too busy to help customers and privacy. Security tags on clothes take away that privacy. If a thief can’t leave the store without a clothing alarm going off they will become too obvious for comfort.

As a loss prevention consultant, I always recommend security tags on clothes and a clothing alarm to any business selling clothing. I’ve never seen a benefit to any clothing retailer choosing to not use security tags on clothes. In fact, most retailers that went against security tags on clothes end up regretting their decision.

The Clothing Alarm versus No Clothing Alarm

Kind of an age old question, do I use a Clothing Alarm, or can I go with no Clothing alarm. If you’re a clothing retailer, I can give you some insight of the benefits of utilizing clothing security in your business.

Particularly for smaller clothing retailers, the benefits of using a clothing alarm far exceed the costs of the initial purchase. Sure it may sound like a lot of money, but you need to look at clothing security as a long term investment into your business.

I worked for a chain of stores, 6 stores in the entire chain. This private business was selling clothing and fast. However, growing just as fast as their business was shrink or inventory loss.  As most business owners and managers know, nothing kills sales and profitability faster than shrink. Hired as a consultant, I observed the operations of each store. I also monitored the customer traffic and crime statistics for each specific neighborhood. Reports from employees helped me build recommendations on clothing security that would be most beneficial.

As a demonstration, I showed the owners a clothing alarm, and attached it to merchandise. I recommended at least one store try on this clothing alarm on high risk/theft merchandise. Initially, the store was somewhat reluctant to spend any money for security tags on clothes and wondered if this was the right idea. Soon, their worries about clothing security tags went away. In one particular department and one line of high risk merchandise, in the 30 day trial period, the store had a 95% decrease in the merchandise lost or stolen. Look at this success, the owners gave the managers direction to put clothing security merchandise on items in other parts of the store. As time went on, the business owners were sold on security tags on clothes. Infact, they purchase enough of a supply to properly outfit each of their stores and each of their departments clothing security tags.

If you are a business owner or manager looking to enhance sales and boost profits, make clothing security a priority.

Security Tags on Clothes Offers Great Physical Deterrence

It’s true; security tags on clothes do offer physical deterrence. It interesting to me when I see new retailers selling clothing, yet have no form of clothing security.  I mean, really, security tags on clothes are cost effective, offer the visual deterrence needed to fend off the average thief and offer great protection against the pro’s with the tools. Why would you not use security tags on clothes?

The only rationale I can find is that some retailers are afraid of the initial cost of instituting a clothing security program. However, you have to look at the long term potential of a clothing security program. No one starts a clothing business expecting to close in just a few years. Just the same, you shouldn’t start a clothing business without clothing security.

In the many years I’ve worked loss prevention, I have seen only one business close. The closure was a direct result of merchandise loss. The owner ran a somewhat initially successful apparel retail chain of 4 stores. His model provided great merchandise and target low to moderate level incomes. In the areas he opened stores; crime rates were much higher than other areas. Yet, the owner felt it was unnecessary to implement clothing security. He felt a uniformed security guard would more benefit the store than security tags on clothes and a clothing alarm. Unfortunately, he could not see how security tags on clothes provide a visual and physical deterrence to thieves. Eventhough clothing security tags and a clothing alarm could offer a dramatic decrease in the amount of clothing loss he was experiencing, he refused to listen.

Had our efforts to provide his business with clothing security tags been successful, I’m certain his business would be thriving today. Now, understand, clothing security tags are not the “be all, end all”, but they do help prevent loss. In fact, one the biggest reasons, in my opinion, that large box clothing retailers have been successful in sales is a direct result of the merchandise protection they receive from clothing security tags.
