Security Tags on Clothes Deter Shoplifters and Save You Money

At the store where I work, we started using security tags on clothes slowly a few years ago after we noticed that the majority of our theft was in softlines merchandise. Not only was our merchandise coming up missing, it seemed as if every shoplifter we did apprehend was telling us it was easy to steal from our fitting rooms and take clothes because, as they put it, they didn’t “beep” going out the door through a clothing alarm like they did at many of the stores in the mall next store. After we began putting hard Checkpoint tags on our clothes to work with our existing EAS system, the results in our shrink have been incredible.

Because of the clothing security tags, our shrink was down in our juniors apparel in one year by almost 50%! As an LP associate my cases started to become more interesting and the police department also seemed to have more fun when people started coming in with tools to help them shoplift! Now they don’t tell me that we are easier to steal from than the mall as often as I am hearing that they couldn’t remove the Checkpoint tags without some kind of tool. Some of my shoplifters have even told me they changed their mind on stealing because we had security tags on clothes and would be ripped or destroyed if they tried to remove them.

I am so glad we took this easy step in increasing our clothing security. It has paid for itself over and over again because now we can sell the merchandise that was just being stolen before. I am really happy with the results and my police department is thankful for all the “silver bracelets” I’ve helped them hand out to criminals.

Woven labels. A must for high end clothing security.

High end boutiques are a constant target for theft.  In today’s market that holds even more truth.  Many have been negatively impacted by the recession, but still want to hold on to their old lifestyle.  That means taking the products they can’t afford to buy.  The result is retailers are forced to utilize a clothing alarm and put security tags on clothes in order to protect their product.  The problem is that many high end boutiques don’t want standard clothing security tags on their products.  Now even high society retailers have a tailored clothing security option.

Checkpoint tags can be woven into the product.  This is accomplished by having the manufacturer install a small fabric label that contains Checkpoint tags into the product.  This can go anywhere you want.  I have mostly seen them used by the cleaning instructions or existing size tag.  It is not noticeable.  It does not require putting a hole in the product like a standard hard tag.  It can be used on almost any type of fabric.  And best of all, it still provides the clothing security you need.

Shoplifters will see the clothing alarm when they walk in the door and know that you use security tags on clothes so the deterrent effect is still in place.  For those who try to steal the clothing alarm will alert you and still give you the ability to react.  You also get the visual aesthetics of not seeing the clothing security tags which many high end retailers really want.  Additionally, you won’t have to worry about your cashiers forgetting to remove a sensor from the product and your customer having to come back before they can use the product.  It’s a win all the way around.

Utilize security tags on clothes to ward off ORC theft of jeans.

For those of you not sure what ORC is; it stands for Organized Retail Crime.  ORC is credited with millions of dollars each year in stolen product.  Many small businesses have been completely decimated by ORC and numerous larger chains have still felt the impact that ORC creates.  By putting security tags on clothes you will go a long way to prevent being targeted by professional shoplifters.

There are several types of clothing security tags to choose from.  I suggest Checkpoint tags for several reasons.  For one, they work.  Some smaller EAS outfits have products that are not very good quality and you end up spending more in repair and service calls than going with a trusted brand.  Two, Checkpoint tags are recognized by professional shoplifters.  These persons make a living by stealing.  (And when I say living I don’t mean paycheck to paycheck living.  Many make 6 figures a year and live better than you and me).  They know the clothing security that works and the clothing security that doesn’t.  Just by using a recognized and trusted product you enhance the deterrent effect of putting security tags on clothes.

Anyone in softlines retail knows that jeans are the hot products.  It really doesn’t matter what brand, jeans sell on the street.  By putting security tags on clothes you force the thieves to do one of two things.  One they can bag up the product and walk out, but that will set off the clothing alarm at the door and gain them unwanted attention.  Now they have increased risk by coming back.  Two, they can try to defeat the clothing security tags which takes time and increases the risk of being caught.  Neither one is wanted by ORC groups and will force them to find other stores to steal from.

Fully Integrated Tags are the new standard in clothing security.

We all know that in order to prevent shoplifting we have to apply security tags on clothes.  While we agree that clothing security is important, I still often hear complaints about the time and effort it takes for store personnel to apply the clothing security tags.  Now there is a better solution.

Checkpoint tags can be purchase as FIT or Fully Integrated Tags.  These clothing security tags are actually the hang tag.  Checkpoint creates the barcode, branding and other store specific data you want on your clothing hang tag and then place a clothing security tag inside.  It is a one stop shop.  You get the variable data tag that you need with the benefit of built in Checkpoint tags that work with your existing clothing alarm system.  This serves several functions.

The first function is clothing security.  You are putting security tags on clothes in order to prevent theft.  The second function is you make the garment stylish.  There are no visible tags to look at, but just the garment itself.  The third function is time efficiency of your staff.  No longer will your staff have to be tied down applying security tags on clothes.  They can instead be focused on your customers and sales.  Finally, you protect yourself from internal theft.  If the employees are putting the clothing security tags on then they can skip the items they want to steal that have not yet been tagged.  By having the manufacturer apply Checkpoint tags before the product even arrives to the store then you are also protecting yourself from employees who may want to take the product themselves.

Clothing security a must to stop large scale theft.

I am surprised as a consumer, and LP Professional, at how many small boutiques don’t use clothing security.  For some, I know that cost is a factor as they are lower volume retailers and don’t have as much money to invest in expensive technology.  For others, I find that it is basically a lack of understanding how much they are targeted by professional shoplifters because they don’t put security tags on clothes.

To address the first group, I would like to introduce you to Checkpoint tags.  While it is not free by any means, Checkpoint tags are cost effective.  The reality is, you can’t afford not to use a clothing alarm.  If you really took a count I would virtually guarantee you are “spending” more in lost product than you would by investing in clothing security.

For the second group, you need to understand how much shoplifters hate clothing security tags.  They hate them for several reasons.  One is that they know Checkpoint tags are going to set off the clothing alarm and get them noticed.  Shoplifters hate to be noticed; especially, the professionals.  The reason is simple.  They want to keep targeting your store repeatedly and they can’t if the employees learn who they are.  Another reason shoplifters hate security tags on clothes is because without the proper detacher they can damage the merchandise which means they can’t wear it or worse; they can’t sell it.

Don’t let your store become a target for professional shoplifting simply because you don’t use clothing security tags.  Force them to “shop” your competitors or dare them to battle Checkpoint tags.  Either way, you can rest easier knowing your profits are safe.

Prevent All Varieties of Theft with Clothing Security

In my position overseeing the safety and security of a large retail store, I have seen all types of shoplifters over the years.  Most of the time, when clothing is stolen, the shoplifter places the clothing into a bag or a purse and then leaves the business.  Sometimes, he or she will wear it under their own clothes, concealing it while in a fitting room.  Or, sometimes he or she will just put on the clothing, like winter coats and jackets, and wear it out of the store.

Sometimes the shoplifter will remove the tags, which take just a quick second, and discard them before concealing the clothing.  Clothing security tags, such as Checkpoint tags, are not as easy to manipulate in order to steal.  Security tags on clothes are much different than breaking a plastic price tag.  Clothing security tags have to be removed at the time of purchase by one of your employees, using a key at the registers.  Removal of security tags on clothes with something other than a key at the registers can be time consuming, can ruin the clothing, and can draw attention to the shoplifter.  These are all components that are not favorable to most shoplifters.

If you are reading this, and you are a business owner, you have probably suffered losses due to shoplifting.  If you sell clothing, you have definitely seen your share of unaccounted for merchandise and wondered just what happened.  Clothing security can be a great deterrent to shoplifters that just do not have the time to fight with the clothing security tags, or do not want to risk being detected.  It is much easier to move on to the next business that sells clothing – the one that does not have security tags on clothes.  Don’t be that business…the one shoplifters are out looking for that provides an easy steal.

CLOTHING SECURITY Necessity not Nuisance

We’ve all seen them; we’ve all heard their piercing sound, those annoying little devices known as security tags. Security tags on clothes can be especially inconvenient in the fitting room. But if we remove the inconvenient annoyance factor and actually look at the bottom line, make money and prevent loss; these tags will soon become the norm. Security tags or Checkpoint tags were created to prevent loss and help protect a company’s assets.

High dollar items are always the first to be protected. This makes sense considering the dollar amount for this particular inventory. Checkpoint tags are good for items of high dollar. What about items of lesser value? Why not protect all assets of high or low value with checkpoint tags?

What about clothing security tags? Clothing security is not always priority but once considered over a period of time how much loss in clothing adds up; one might see the need for security tags on clothes. Clothing security is important considering consumers will always need clothes. Next to food, clothes are a necessity which means companies will always make money and always lose money from this particular kind of merchandise. The bonus to clothing security tags or security tags on clothes is tagging can be very discreet and less annoying if thought through and placed properly on or within the item.

Keeping clothing security tags and other security tags on and within items keeps an honest man honest and sends a shoplifter somewhere else. If you take away the opportunity and use all preventive measures to protect all assets, profit made will most certainly outweigh loss.

Clothing security made fashionable. What???

Yep.  I said it.  Clothing security can be fashionable.  We all know that in this day and age you have to put security tags on clothes in order to protect your inventory.  One of the major downsides though is how it looks.  We work in sales and sales are all about looks.  That is why Checkpoint tags come in so many different sizes and shapes.

You can always get the trusty hard clothing security tags.  But that does not look that great and can make trying clothes on hard, depending on the product.  There are now a variety of sizes in hard clothing security tags that make them less noticeable and do not impede the “trying on” process.  In addition, Checkpoint tags now can be sewn inside the product.  Many retailers are using this for their high end product.  The Checkpoint tags are “soft tags” and they are inside a small piece of cloth and sewn beside the size tag or cleaning instructions.  The customer’s don’t even notice they are there.  The clothes look great on the mannequins or rack, but your EAS will still alert you if someone is trying to steal the product.

Whatever clothing security solution you use is up to you, but know that putting security tags on clothes no longer has to be a trade-off for sales.

Prevent Organized Retail Crime with Clothing Security

A common practice amongst thieves is theft for resale. Organized retail crime impacts our businesses more than we sometimes realize, and businesses that sell clothing are not exempt. Groups of shoplifters have been known to enter businesses, grab handfuls of merchandise, and exit quickly without making an attempt to conceal the crime. Speed is the tool that they use to try and make their quick getaway.

Clothing security can help prevent these types of crimes. Having a clothing alarm, such as Checkpoint tags, can make shoplifters nervous that extra attention may be drawn to their crimes. Removing clothing security tags after the theft is extremely difficult also, as Checkpoint tags require a key for removal. Your employees can remove the clothing security tags easily at the time the merchandise is purchased, but shoplifters do not want to have to fight for hours to remove them from the merchandise they have stolen.

Having clothing security also includes merchandising your items in such a way to minimize theft. Make sure that high theft, highly sought after merchandise is not located right near the entrance and exits of your business. High theft merchandise should also be located in an area where employees can monitor it. Employees should also be taught to provide good customer service to keep your honest customers coming back, and to deter the shoplifters from stealing.

Security tags on clothes are a recommended option to protect your merchandise from those that wish to steal it. Checkpoint tags are a visual deterrent to shoplifters, and can be just convincing enough to encourage the shoplifters to move on to a business that does not have clothing security.

Clothing security that makes shoplifting pointless. Now that’s a solution.

The basic idea behind putting security tags on clothes is to deter theft.  One of the major deterrent factors is that clothing security tags sound an alarm and brings attention to the shoplifter (which they don’t want).  Over the years I have seen some pretty interesting work-arounds to standard clothing security.  On of the biggest problems I’ve seen occurs when people use “knock-Off” clothing security tags.

When cheap import tags are used instead of Checkpoint tags, shoplifters can often remove the tags by prying them apart or breaking them. With Checkpoint tags you can be assured that your clothing security tags will not make be removed by anyone except your sales associate. Genuine Checkpoint tags are also the most effective with your clothing alarm.

Another option is to use ink tags. Ink tags are hard tags that have a dye built into the tag.  If the product is handles normally then there is no problem.  If the thief tries to remove the ink tag then it will break the ink vials and ruin the garment and the hands of the thief.  By using these security tags on clothes it makes the garment not worth stealing.  This ink cannot be washed out so it is pointless to the thief to even try to steal it.  The downside is that you can lose a few items to damage until the thieves figure this out; however, better lost to damage than theft.  Also, in the long run it will save you product.  For this reason I suggest standard hard tags as your first clothing security option, but this is great if that is not working.
