Which Size Is Right? – Security Tags on Clothes

Security tags on clothes rely on appropriate sizing to be as customer friendly as possible. A too small tag is not a visual deterrent to shoplifters, while clothing security tags that are too large inhibit the experience for actual shoppers. The Alpha Security Cable Lok and the Mini Cable Lok help solve the problem of which one goes where.
The difference between the two really comes down to size (the size of the lanyard and the size of the housing). The size determines which tag is more appropriate for specific security tags on clothes and accessories.
The Cable Lok has three sizes of lanyards- 6”, 48” and 72”. The Housing – 3.53”L x 1.62”W x 0.74”D 25 (8.97 cmL x 4.11 cmW x 1.88 cmD). The 6” is a great size for luxury handbags, backpacks, luggage, camera bags, and briefcases and sports equipment.
The Mini Cable Lok also has three sizes of lanyards, but they start at 3”, and then 48” and 72”. The Housing is slightly smaller as well – 2.60”L x 1.16”W x 0.80”D 25 (6.60 cmL x 2.95 cmW x 2.03 cmD) which works great for smaller items like shoes.
The two larger sizes are ideal for coats, furs, dresses, men’s and women’s suits. Choosing the right clothing security tags all depends on what your merchandise is.

Make It Crystal Clear- Wardrobing Retail

One of the best ways to implement a change of policy is to make sure your intentions are clear- make them black and white. When you start to use Alpha Shark Tags, you want to make sure your employees and your customers are clear form the start as to what they are and what they are used for.
Alpha Shark Tags are plastic clamps that affix to the front of a garment. There is usually a pin that clamps the two sides together securely. Because this is not an anti shoplifting device, the consumer can easily remove the tag with a pair of household scissors.
It is important that the consumer knows these tags are there for one reason only: to stop wardrobing retail. The consumer also needs to know that if the tag is removed, it will be unable to be reattached.
If the tag is removed, the retailer can use its discretion to reject a return even if it is within the store’s receipted return policy.
The best way to ensure the consumer knows this policy is to verbally tell them at the point of sale. The wardrobing tags can also attach a paper copy of the return and wardrobing retail policy to the garment to further ensure communication with the consumer. That eliminates a significant amount of possible confusion between the consumer and your store.

Professional Grade Interview- Wardrobing Retail

After a friend’s recent college graduation ceremony, one of the grads started talking about how she is always prepared for job interviews because she buys a new outfit for each interview and then returns it. Basically she was admitting to wardrobing retail to make herself look better (and more qualified) for a job interview.
She talked about how the hardest item to return was shoes. When you wear them outside, they immediately begin to show wear on the soles- retailers look for that at the returns desk. This is one of the biggest reasons why retailers don’t use Alpha Shark Tags on shoes to prevent wardrobing.
Everything else was pretty easy to return. She figured out that if a suit jacket has the price tag on the sleeve she could bend the plastic on the attachment and slide it carefully through the hole in the price tag. Instead of clipping the plastic piece, she pushes it back inside the sleeve for the interview.
If she wears a jacket then it will hide any tags that are in her shirt, which means she does not have to even try and take those tags off.
After she is done, she bends the plastic end back through the hole of the price tag. By doing this, the employer never sees the evidence of her scheme, and the retailer that she is returning the outfit to never suspects her of wardrobing because the tag is still attached.

Caught Red Handed- Alpha Shark Tags

Even though it is rare to catch a customer actually wearing the clothes they are attempting to return, tampered Wardrobing Tags are the next best thing to catching them in the act. Alpha Shark Tags may not be able to tell you what the customer did with the clothes after they left the store, but they can decrease the likelihood that they were worn and then returned.
The Alpha Shark Tags help to reinforce your store’s return policy. Because the red tags simply can not be removed or reattached without showing signs of tampering, it is a fool proof way for your employees to determine if the clothing can be returned or not.
At one time, we employed a door guard whose job it was to greet customers, answer alarm activations, and to validate returns coming into the store. One day he told me about a girl that came in to return an outfit along with some nail polish. As she showed my employee the receipt and the bottle she was returning, told her that the color was really pretty and almost like the color she was wearing on her nails. It was a classic case of wardrobing retail.
Now this girl quickly changed her story and backtracked saying that she wasn’t going to return the nail polish, but she knew she was caught. She ended up leaving with all of the merchandise because her nails gave her away. Alpha Shark Tags would have prevented the outfit from being returned had we used them. If the girl had removed her polish before she came in, we never would have known she was wardrobing.

Keep It Off The Shelves – Clothing Security

Clothing security goes beyond just putting security tags on clothes in your store. It involves taking a second look at the opportunities your store presents. Can you reduce your shelf quantities and still make a positive impact on your sales? If so, do it. Take those items and back stock them.
By giving your store a different approach to theft prevention than just using Checkpoint tags, you will be better off. Reducing your shelf quantity is just another enhancement to your clothing security.
If you sell multiples of an item and need a large representation of this item, don’t sacrifice your sales through a shelf quantity reduction. However, those situations are generally more of an exception than a rule.
The right way is to look at your current sales and make a determination if you can make the reductions. Clothing security tags are very important to reducing your shrink losses on a permanent basis, but they are not the only way to go. By remembering that there are other enhancements that you can quickly make will only help you be proactive to specific issues as they arise.
If you notice that you are no longer shrinking an item, it is easy to increase the shelf quantities at that time.

Jewelry Can Be Clothing Too- Clothing Security

Jewelry is a huge add- on item in retail, or in any small business for that matter. It is also a huge theft item by nature. Jewelry is small. It is easily concealed, and can be quite expensive. Jewelry losses sometimes outweigh the profit margins built into these impulse buys. Clothing security should always be extended out to protect this high theft item.
Clothes are not the only items that need protection using retail theft devices. Jewelry and accessories can often create losses that far exceed that of any other clothing department or product group.
In fact, I worked for a retailer once that had jewelry losses that exceeded our designer clothing department two to one.
Another point of consideration is that jewelry sales seem to be cropping up for other non-clothing retailers. How many convenience stores have been selling costumer jewelry up on their counters for points of sale add on?
When you begin to think of clothing security as more than just clothes, you may be surprised at the impact it makes to your bottom line.

Only Worn Once- Alpha Shark Tags

It is extremely difficult to stay at the height of fashion when you have a large and unsightly security tag affixed to the center of your blouse or special occasion outfit. For many women, in particular, this might be a reality as the practice of wardrobing retail becomes harder with more retailers’ using alpha shark tags.
When someone is wardrobing pieces of merchandise, they are buying an item to wear one time and then return to get their money back.
This is all to frequent with special occasion items (for example) where the wearer can’t justify spending the money on the item that will be worn only once, maybe twice.
These women keep the price tags on, being careful not to spill on or otherwise soil the merchandise, and return the item soon after the event. The justification comes from feeling like they gave back an item that is as good as new, so the retailer could not possibly be out anything.
Since they have taken such good care of the item, they feel like they are free to continue this practice of wardrobing retail to stay at the height of fashion.
Yes, in some circles, it is still taboo to wear the same thing one more than one occasion. There is a social pressure to have the latest looks, or at least a different one than what was worn to the last soiree.
Alpha Shark Tags help eliminate this one time use process. Because the tags are too obvious to be hidden, wardrobing is no longer an option.

The National Debate- Wardrobing

When national retailer Nordstrom’s recently announced that they would be trailblazing the way for retailer’s to fight the common practice of wardrobing, it seems like every retail, fashion, and business blog lit up with a frenzied debate about the pros and cons and ethical righteousness from both points of view.
Just like with any form of theft or fraud, there is always a justification of why someone should carry out such an action. In the case of wardrobing, it comes down to the stance of “no harm, no foul”.
Many people underestimate the severity of wardrobing. Because an item is paid for and then refunded, the user feels like it is no different than any other refund that is conducted on a normal basis.
Retailer’s are often in a quandary on what to do with these items. Up until now, Nordstrom’s did not have a customer service friendly way to decline these returns. They were then left with items that had been worn, and ethically could not be sold as new. The garments might have been fine upon the initial glance, but if you turned them inside out, there were often the tell tale signs of use- makeup or deodorant debris, perhaps a not so new smell.
Because there is not a defect, the retailer can’t send it back to the manufacturer for a credit. This leaves the retailer with having to take a massive discount to get the item out of their inventory.

Miss Matched Losses- Clothing Security Tags

Miss matched shoes are two different sized shoes in the same shoebox. Obviously they didn’t come in that way from the vendor, so when you have a pair of miss matched shoes there isn’t much you can do with them. Clothing security needs to be different to combat this particular kind of loss.
A customer with two different sized feet (which is very common) get two pairs of shoes in two different sizes. They take one shoe from each pair leaving you with a pair of dissimilar sized shoes.
Since it is very rare that you can find another customer with the exact need for this mixed size pair of shoes, you now have a loss on your hands.
Mini CableLoks by Alpha Security can actually help with these kinds of losses.
They are alarm based clothing security. It will emit a clothing alarm like any other clothing security tags. They are secured using aircraft grade cables instead of pins, which gives some protection against miss match shoes.
When you use the 6” cable, you can actually attach both pair of shoes together with some room for the customer to still try them on and take a step or two. If both shoes stay physically connected, they can’t be separated causing the loss.

Follow The Big Guys- Alpha Shark Tags

A recent news release brought an under acknowledged retail secret to light. That secret is wardrobing.
Wardrobing is the practice of buying an item, wearing that item once for a special occasion, and then returning the item for full purchased price.
In this news article one of the larger retail chains, whose product lines include designer and higher priced items, made a very public statement regarding the practice of wardrobing retail.
They announced that in an effort to combat this practice, they would be adding wardrobing tags to their lines of security measures. These black tags are affixed to the front of a garment. Attached to this tag is a paper card of instructions on how to remove the tag. The instructions also state that without the tag still on, the garment cannot be returned.
The point that this retailer is trying to make is to stop the likelihood of a customer wearing the product only one time before returning it. By having a big, unsightly tag on the front of an outfit, the user will be less inclined to wear that particular item out in public. If they can’t wear it, they (in turn) will be less likely to buy the item in the first place.
If they are less likely to buy the item, then the wardrobing tags are doing their job of discouraging the wardrobing retail practice.
