Can’t Change Her Mind – Wardrobing Retail

As a retailer, it is our job not to try and change the perception of these customers. It is our job to eliminate the opportunity within our own store for wardrobing retail to take place.
Two ladies were talking about the interview one of them had later. One of the ladies was expressing her disgust at the other coffee shop patrons who were walking to closely to her with their cups of coffee.
She talked about how mad she would be if someone spilt even a drop of coffee on her new outfit. At first I sympathized thinking that if I had bought a new outfit to impress a potential employer, I would not want to show up with coffee stains all over it.
Then I realized that the lady was upset because she needed to keep the outfit nice so she could return it to the store the next day. It actually made me so disgusted that I personally wanted to “accidentally” spill my coffee on her. Then I realized- what good would that do?
The lady was so open about her actions that this very clearly was not her first time doing so. Unfortunately, this also would not be her last.
Wardrobing is a part of her lifestyle. It probably is something she had done for so long, that she no longer sees anything wrong with it, if she ever even felt any remorse or hesitation about it.

Don’t Throw It Away- Clothing Security

Would you throw a hundred dollar bill in the trash for no reason? How about a twenty? No? Well maybe you would walk by a trashcan and throw a dollar bill into it without caring; it is just a dollar after all?

Because you spent your carefully managed and tracked cash on purchasing your inventory, would it not make sense that you should spend as much time and effort in protecting your clothing inventory from losses?

At one time, we employed a door guard whose job it was to greet customers, answer alarm activations, and to validate returns coming into the store. One day he told me about a girl that came in to return some nail polish. Implications Beyond Your Store –Wardrobing

Wardrobing is not just about the customers who are in your store. It is also about customers who do any kind of online or mail order shopping. I never thought about those ramifications until I was presented with an unfortunate situation as a customer.
I recently bought a dress. Since I made the purchase online I never worried that the dress may have been involved in any wardrobing before I bought it. I didn’t realize that some companies send merchandise straight from a store, instead of out of a warehouse.
Once I received the dress in the mail, I went to try it on and there was a huge smudge of makeup all inside the dress. Ugh. After calling customer service, I was given two options, return the dress or keep the dress with an extra ten percent discount. Since I really wanted the dress and the discount would cover dry cleaning, I went with option number two.
One of two things had happened. The make up came from a customer trying the dress on, oblivious to the damage she did, or it came from a customer who was wardrobing.
Either way, the company lost out. They were shorted the discount that they gave me. Additionally, they lost me as a customer (and all the money I am spending elsewhere) because it was not worth the potential hassle to order anything from them again.

Up To You –Wardrobing Tags

There are some forms of return fraud that is very clearly illegal, however wardrobing retail is not one of them. Most state legislation only says that a retailer must post their return policy in a prominent location. They say nothing about how a retailer outlines what is acceptable within those policies.
Since there are still a fair amount of retailers that welcome back refunds of merchandise in any condition, it makes it even harder to form actual legislation on wardrobing.
 Would you be happy if state laws outlined exactly how your return policy should read? Probably not. Because there are so many variables and variations, it would be difficult to find a universal return policy that retailers would find neither too strict nor too lenient.
That leaves it up to the individual retailers to create their own return policy as well as finding clear-cut ways to discourage wardrobing retail within their stores.
Some retailers have found success through having an “all sales are final” policy. Simple and effective; no one can abuse a policy that has no margin for exception. As this can potentially alienate a large, honest customer base, maybe a less strict policy can be utilized. Maybe a 30-day policy would work, or implementing Wardrobing Tags on all of your special occasion items can be effective in your situation.
Until that time that all retailers can agree on one policy, it is best for you to decide what your store would and would not find acceptable and then make sure it was clear to all of your customers.
