Clothing Alarm Basics

Most clothing alarm systems are made up of several components. The antennas at the doors, the security tags on clothes and the detachers. Each plays an important role.

The clothing alarm antennas such as Checkpoint Systems are normally located at the customer doors. The antennas are mounted to the floor and require 110-volt AC power. The Checkpoint System antennas watch for hard tags at a frequency of 8.2 MHz. Once the tag is seen the Checkpoint antennas produce an alarm tone and light alerting store staff. It is important to keep the antennas clear of merchandise. Displays must be at least three feet away. It is also best to keep store fixtures and decorations such as Christmas trees away from the system. The clothing alarm should be tested every day and any issues should trigger a service call. These systems require professional installation and service. Contrary to what resellers of used equipment tell you they can only be tuned by authorized service tech with the training and tools.

The clothing security tags come in a wide range of types and sizes. One thing to remember is that the bigger the better. Smaller clothing security tags will not generally perform as well as larger ones. However, for most retailers the smaller security tags on clothes work just fine. The most popular is the Checkpoint mini hard tag. There is now the next generation of clothing security tags . It is called the 3G. This hard tag has a very strong shell that cannot be pried apart with a knife or screwdriver. The Fashion2 and Fashion2 Accessory clothing security tags are also very good. Most hard tags are in models that require either a standard or super detacher.

The detacher is what store employees use to remove the security tags on clothes when they are purchased at the POS. Detachers come in several types. But you should use a super detacher at a minimum. The first generation “standard” detacher is easier to defeat by shoplifters. The clutch in clothing security tags that require a super detacher are much more robust. Even better is the S3 detacher by Alpha High Theft Solutions. The S3 is very unique and is almost impossible to defeat.

Take clothing security serious and you will be rewarded with higher profits and less shoplifting. Remember clothing security starts when the shoplifter walks in your door!

Clothing Security – The Alpha Fashion2 Hard Tag and Accessory Tag

Clothing security can be a tough nut to crack with some items. The average clothing item takes a hard tag well. You usually locate it on a seam or similar location. But what becomes tricky in clothing security is items like leather, purses, belts, bags and hats. A clothing alarm relies on the use of a hard tag but what do you do when the tag is either to large or the use of a pin is not practical or it will damage the product.

In the clothing security world there is a low cost but high-end solution. It is the Alpha Fashion2 Tags. The Fashion2 hard tag is less than 2 inches long and very thin. This tag requires the use of a pin. However, because of it’s small size it will fit on very small items such as those thong type swimsuit bottoms that do not have a whole lot of material to begin with!

The Fashion2 Accessory Tag takes clothing security in a whole different direction. This tag looks the same as the Fashion2 Hard Tag but it has one major difference. The accessory tag has a built in 3 inch coated aircraft cable with a built in pin. The cable loops around the item and then locks into place. In the past you would have to use a traditional hard tag and flex string. Because the cable is only 3 inches the Fashion2 rides close to your merchandise item and has a pleasant appearance. The cool thing about this tag is that when you remove it the cable stays attached to the hard tag. No more fishing around for a flex string.

Another strong clothing security point is that the aircraft cable is a thicker more robust cable. It would take quite a bit of time to cut through this baby. The clear plastic coating protects the finish of your merchandise. Loop these clothing security tags through belt buckles, shoes, purse handles, leather item buttonholes, openings in hats or bag handles. Basically if you can loop the cable through the merchandise item you have attached your clothing security tags.

Both the Fashion2 and the Fashion2 Accessory clothing security tags come in RF and AM formats and are available in beige, gray and black colors. Standard or super detacher models available.

Stopping return fraud with clothing security

One scenario that I have seen in the retail loss prevention world is a “buy one get one free” type of scam.  The customer comes into the business and buys items that he or she wants.  Then the customer leaves and later returns to your business.  He or she steals the exact items that they had previously purchased.  Assuming that the shoplifter gets out of the store without being caught, the shoplifter can then return again with the stolen merchandise and return it for cash, since they have a “receipt.”

Businesses that have clothing security make this type of fraud more difficult for thieves.  Clothing security tags are a deterrent for shoplifters, and this type of scam is no exception.  A shoplifter that is considering this return fraud is not going to want to have to figure out how to bypass the security tags on clothes in order to return the stolen merchandise.

Return fraud of clothing is an easy way to earn some quick money.  Clothing is easy to steal, especially if the business does not have clothing security.  By returning the clothing to the business for cash, the shoplifter gets 100% profit with no monetary investment.  Shoplifters can receive a pretty hefty payout for only a few minutes of work, so no wonder this type of scam is tempting.
You do not have to allow this to happen in your business.

Security tags on clothes are a worthwhile deterrent to shoplifters wanting to profit off of your loss.  Shoplifters know that they cannot return merchandise that has clothing security tags, and most do not want to even attempt the theft, knowing the risk of activating a clothing alarm.  The quick buck isn’t worth the risk if you have clothing security.  Especially when the thief can move on to the next, unprotected business.

Stopping shoplifters with clothing security

Shoplifters come in all shapes and sizes.  They are male, female, old, young, single or married.  They work alone, in pairs, or in large groups.  And as I’ve discovered after working in the loss prevention field, they can be skilled at what they do.  They also try to stay one step ahead of being caught.

If you operate a business that sells clothing, clothing security needs to be a consideration in order to increase your bottom line and reduce losses due to shrink.  Security tags on clothes are a useful tool in the fight to keep your clothing available for those who wish to purchase it, instead of allowing it to walk out your doors at the hands of a shoplifter.

Shoplifters may stuff clothing in their bags, inside of other items or under their own clothing.  They may also be bold enough to just grab a handful of clothing and walk out of your business.  However they choose to steal, by having clothing security tags, alarms will sound if they try to go past your doors without paying for your merchandise.

When shoplifters are deciding whether or not to steal from you, they look for security measures such as alarms at the doors or security tags on clothes.  It is much easier to steal unsecured clothing than it is to worry about activating a clothing alarm.

Shoplifters have to have anonymity in order to get away with the crime, and activating a clothing alarm makes anonymity difficult.  They do not want to get your attention – they just want to get your merchandise.

The clothing security tags displayed on your high theft merchandise allow for increased sales instead of increased theft.  That is a minimal investment with a substantial return in profit.

Can Your Clothing Alarm Be Used For Something Else?

Your clothing alarm system protects your merchandise 24/7. It does not call in sick or take a vacation. A properly used system will dramatically drop your shoplifting losses. But what else can your clothing alarm be used for?

How about controlling store use items such as tools and equipment. You could place a hard tag on these items that would alert you if they were being removed from the store. We know that people will steal anything that is not nailed down this includes your store property. This could also include pricing guns and any other merchandise labeling equipment.

Do not forget office equipment and supplies that may have a tendency to walk away with either customers or employees.

You can also protect smaller items such as keys. Attach a hard tag to customer restroom keys. That way if the customer simply forgets to return them you will know. Store staff use keys could also be tagged. This is not an issue of theft but just forgetting to put them back before going home. Have you ever come in one morning and the person who closed took keys home by accident?

Documents and paperwork that is not to leave the store can also be protected with a Checkpoint label. Again it is probably not an issue of someone stealing it. You just do not want it to leave the store.

Rental equipment or items should also be protected with a Checkpoint hard tag or Checkpoint label until they have been properly rented and the customer is then authorized to remove them.

The profitability of clothing security

Is it really profitable to add clothing security on to the checklist of items it takes to run a clothing business?

Many managers and business professionals have a tendency to look at clothing security as a profit killer. They factor in the time it takes to install the security tags on clothes and other minimal facts. Ultimately it kills their plans to provide clothing security. Yet, they tend to forget if there is no merchandise to sell there are no profits.

Let me make this as simple and as straight forward as possible. Clothing security is a vital part of running any clothing business. Whether you feel you have the best situation, store location, nice area of town or believe that you have customers that don’t steal… get your store clothing security tags.

Putting in place a clothing security program is simple, but will require you to do some homework. Security tags on clothes can come in a number of different designs and styles, better suiting your needs. Clothing security tags are an obvious image to amateur and professional shoplifters alike. These guys like to go for the merchandise that is least protected. Look around your store. What merchandise do you consider desirable? All of it, right? What are you doing to protect it?

Clothing security tags are affordable and will provide payback through the protection of the merchandise. Protecting your profits through clothing security

Clothing security can sometimes seem a moot point. In many retailers, the merchandise seems to turn so quickly that putting security tags on clothes seems to be time consuming and almost too difficult to manage.

Let me say, if that statement is true for you, you need help…fast! Clothing security is an important part of your retail business. After all, if you don’t have the merchandise in your stores to sell, then you have no profits. Placing security tags on clothes is just one detail in the realm of increasing your profitability.

Clothing security tags protect not only the value of your merchandise but give the appearance and impression to both your customers and employees that you truly care. I have seen and heard from business customers that frequent or have frequented many of the stores I work. The customers talk about the good and the bad of clothing security tags . Believe it or not, most customers understand the need from clothing security and realize that clothing security helps keep the merchandise they want, in your stores.

In speaking with customers over the years, the biggest complaints I’ve heard was that clothing security tags damage merchandise, or clothing security tags are a nuisance. What these comments tell me is that the stores are not managing the program effectively.

Placement of the clothing security tags is crucial for both appearance, security of the merchandise and merchandise salability. If you have security tags on clothes , yet the person placing the tags is doing it just to do it, and there is no follow up… you get what you get. Poor standards.

The execution of standards for security tags on clothes falls directly on the management within the store. Inspect what you expect, follow through with the program appropriately and clothing security can pay you back, big time.

New Alpha Clothing Security Tags.

Alpha High Theft Solutions has produced several new clothing security tags. If you are a retailer that is concerned about clothing security you will want to look consider these in your arsenal.

The first is the S3 Multi Tag. This tag is a bit of a departure form the normal. The most obvious feature is that it has two pins. These pins are part of one base and form a “U”. Both pins lock into the hard tag. This makes the S3 Multi Tag ideal clothing security tags for lingerie, dresses or any other item with a strap. In this case the pins never punch through any material. This would also be great for leather items.

The S3 Multi Tag itself has a bit of a teardrop shape. It is 0.75” thick and 1.25” high by 1.25” wide. The S3 Multi Tag is very dark slate gray in color and requires a S3 detacher.

The second new item is the S3 Accessory Tag. This dark gray hard tag is somewhat triangular shaped and very small, 1.0” wide at the base and 1.0” tall. What makes this a hot item is that it has a very small black plastic coated aircraft cable tipped by a built in pin. The cable can loop around anything such as a shoe strap, purse latch or hardware. The S3 Accessory Tag could also be used with other merchandise such as power tools or anything else with some loop. It is a very versatile hard tag that is not just for clothing security

After looping the cable and pin through the merchandise the pin is then inserted into the back of the S3 Accessory Tag. It is then locked in place and can only be opened with an S3 Detacher. The really cool thing about these is that the cables come in some very nice lengths, 2”, 6”, 9”, and 21”. They are available in either RF or AM.

Thefts prevented with clothing security

I recently read about a theft in my city from several businesses in a mall.  The female suspect was caught and arrested after an alert store employee notified law enforcement about the theft.  When police searched the suspect’s vehicle, however, they found out that it was jammed full of merchandise that the suspect had stolen and taken to her car before returning for more.  She had, essentially, successfully stolen those items and would have been able to get away with the crime if she had not been greedy and gone back for more.

Much of the merchandise stolen was clothing from clothing stores.  There is one common factor among the victim stores – they did not have security tags on clothes.  There was no type of clothing alarm that alerted store employees that the thefts were occurring.  No type of clothing security is utilized in any of these businesses.  They suffered thousands of dollars of loss that was fortunately recovered – this time.  And if the crime hadn’t been discovered while in progress…those thousands would be lost.

Had clothing security tags been utilized, these stores may not have even been targeted by this individual.  Additionally, had this thief entered the stores with the intent to steal, she may have changed her mind when she realized that there were security tags on clothes.  She was able to get in and out of these businesses several times without drawing attention, and this is not easily done when clothing security is in use.

This tale of theft has a happy ending since the bad gal went to jail.  But for every shoplifter apprehended there are many more that are successfully stealing from businesses.  By protecting the clothing that you sell with clothing security tags, you are making a minimal investment that can have magnificent rewards.

Stop being a victem! Get a clothing alarm installed and go on the offense!

Protecting your profits with the use of Clothing security tags

Clothing Security Tags are used by many retailers in their efforts to help control theft by customers and maintain their inventory levels.

Professional shoplifters around the world are deterred daily by these security tags on clothes . If the regular shoplifter is looking for privacy and an easy way to get in and out of the store with very little recognition, then clothing security tags are a great deterrent.

As an example of the benefits of having clothing security, a sporting goods retailer I worked for had issues with customer theft of merchandise off of the salesfloor. The store input a clothing alarm program that included clothing security tags.  These security tags on clothes offered a visible deterrent to potential shoplifters. Thieves like to get into the store, take the merchandise they can quickly sell or move and get out of the store with as little interaction with store employees as possible. A clothing alarm takes away that privacy. The minute the thief tampers with the device or attempts to remove it in any way, an alarm activates. Instantly taking away the discreet atmosphere desired by these bums.

Clothing security tags are not new, but the technology is evolving. It is becoming more and more an important part of the everyday operations of many retailers. Certainly, for a business to grow and produce profits, they must have the merchandise to sell. Well, a solid clothing security program places the retailer in a better position to increase their profits.

That sports retailer I worked for as been able to keep their average shrink to less 1%, thanks in large part to the clothing security program they have enacted. Combined with an excellent employee awareness program, security tags on clothes offer the best way to keep merchandise in your stores and boost your profits.
