Not The Trade Off You Are Looking For- Security Tags on Clothes

Accidents are extremely costly due to the medical expenses involved in addition to the potential longevity of the accident claim. It is very rare that the cost of one accident is less than the costs incurred through multiple shoplifting losses. Clothing security is financially ineffective if you are creating unsafe environments.
Cable locking systems are an ideal way to protect runs of clothing like jackets, handbags or suits. The power system has a built in clothing alarm. The steel cords are highly effective security tags on clothes.
The downside to cable locking systems is that they pose a potential safety hazard. The cables are generally only one size that is quite lengthy to incorporate the maximum amount of merchandise.
The power supply frequently needs to be plugged into an outlet to make the clothing alarm operable. The end result can be an unsightly mess of cords and plugs and wires. All of which are difficult to shop around and could be easy to trip over.
By creating a safer environment you are saving yourself thousands of dollars from potential general liability claims. When you switch to the Alpha Security CableLoks you can continue to use top quality security tags on clothes without all of the bulk and potential tripping hazards.

Another Pressing Matter- Anti Theft Devices

Just like every store employee, at some point you have to stop watching a suspected shoplifter in order to attend to another function of your job. I had one particular incident that I still think of because I knew this was a solid case, and our lack of clothing security was why she was here.
One time I spent thirty minutes waiting and “cleaning” the fitting room, because there was a girl inside, who was going to steal some shirts, and kept checking to see if I left. I was bound and determined that I could outwait her. Eventually she had to give up, right?
That was a great idea, at least until I had another pressing matter come up.
There was a hurt customer that I needed to attend to. So I left my potential suspect to address the injured customer. It didn’t take long before I saw the girl leave. When I went to see if she left shirts, all I found was a pile of empty hangers.
I knew that if we had used anti theft devices, even if they were cheap labels and cheap tags, this girl would not have left with our merchandise.

The Other Side of Training – Clothing Security

When you conduct loss prevention training, how far are you taking it? There are several main parts when you train your employees about your store’s clothing security and the clothing alarm system.

The first part is the technical side of things. You have to teach your employees how to use the system. Show them what happens when clothing security tags come too close to the exit doors. How close can you get before the clothing alarm goes off? It is important to know that customers can be shopping close by with no intention of exiting the store and still set an alarm off. They also need to know how close to the doors they can merchandise product with clothing security tags or they will set off false alarms all day long.

Your employees also need to know that Checkpoint tags need to be removed. Just passing them over the deactivator pads cannot deactivate the tags. The soft labels, on the other hand need to be passed over the deactivator pads, but there is a field in which they need to pass. If the cashier is not putting them over the pad within the designated field the clothing alarm will go off.

Clothing security training is not just about putting security tags on clothes. It is about how the system works as a whole and the role your employees play in making sure it is working as it should.

Let Them Cave To Their Impulses – Security Tags on Clothes

This is probably the most common area that retailers are challenged with finding a balance. They need to balance the shopping habits and needs of their customers with the need for clothing security. It is not uncommon for retailers to use bulky cable and chain locks to secure entire fixtures of expensive clothes, like jackets or coats.
The problem is that these chain locks are often extremely sensitive and are prone to setting off the clothing alarm by very little movement of the product.
When your merchandise is tied up to the point that it is unshoppable to the average customers then your profits on those items are tied up as well. Literally. It has been proven over and over that when you eliminate access to your merchandise, sales go down.
A better solution is to replace the outdated chain and loop systems. Security tags on clothes have come a long way since these systems first came out. Now there are better solutions to protect outerwear items. You can use individual clothing security tags. They are less bulky and not as sensitive to movement. That means your customers can try them on as they are shopping. It turns the merchandise into more of an impulse purchase than a destination buy.

How Much is Too Much? – Clothing Security

How much is too much? When you are merchandising and stocking in your departments, traditionally you want to fill the shelves and the racks as much as you can. It is usually discouraged to have things in a back stockroom. How does this factor into clothing security? Can there be too much product on the sales floor?

If you have theft issues, then yes, you can have too much product out. Thieves will take every opportunity you give them. If you put out every piece of high theft merchandise, do not be surprised if the thieves actually take every piece.

Clothing security actually goes beyond just putting clothing security tags on your merchandise. It involves taking a second look at the opportunities your store presents. Can you reduce your shelf quantities and not make a negative impact on your sales? If so, do it. Take those items and back stock them.

By giving your store a different approach to theft prevention than just using Checkpoint tags, you will be better off. Reducing your shelf quantity is just another enhancement to your clothing security.

The right way is to look at your current sales and make a determination if you can make the reductions. If you sell multiples of an item and need a large representation of this item, don’t sacrifice your sales through a shelf quantity reduction. However, those situations are generally more of an exception than a rule.

Nordstrom’s is Leading The Way- Wardrobing Tags

A recent news story told the tale of how Nordstrom’s, one of the larger high end retail chains, made a very public statement about the changes they are making to their notoriously lenient return policy. These changes are specifically designed to discourage the all to common practice of wardrobing retail purchases.
Nordstrom’s announced that in an effort to combat wardrobing, they would be adding large black tags to their lines of security measures. These wardrobing tags are affixed to the front of a particular garment. Attached to this tag is a paper card of instructions on how to remove the tag. The instructions also state that without the tag still on, the garment cannot be returned.
The point that Nordstrom’s is trying to make is to stop the likelihood of a customer wearing the product only one time before returning it.
By having a wardrobing tags on the front of an outfit, the user will be less inclined to wear that particular item out in public. If they can’t wear it, they (in turn) will be less likely to buy the item in the first place.
It is just a matter of time before the customers who previously abused their liberal return policy are caught having to keep an item because they tore the wardrobing tags off and are now declined the refund.

Secure the Web Orders- Clothing Security Tags

One of the current shopping trends is to allow customers to place their orders on line, and then pick up the merchandise in the store. Some of these pick ups are merchandise that comes from the supply chain, while others come from existing store inventory. Either way, security tags on clothes need to be taken into consideration.
Here is where a decision needs to be made regarding the clothing security tags.
Do you remove the clothing security tags immediately, in an effort to expedite the customers wait (a big part of why they shopped on line to begin with)? If so, you run the risk of shoplifting or employee theft of readily accessible items that have the clothing security already removed.
Or, you can leave the Checkpoint tags on, protecting your merchandise from this easy access, and run the risk of irritating the customer who is expecting a smooth and quick pick-up process?
If you have a secured location to keep the merchandise form these orders, then you might want to consider removing the clothing security tags ahead of time. Some stores have access to a locked cage or other secured area to store these orders. This secured area would serve the same purpose as the tags. It provides a way to keep your customers happy while you keep your merchandise secure.

Return Fraud With The Tags- Alpha Shark Tags

I had an employee who was going to start a new job with a different company. She needed business attire but didn’t have the money to completely replace her entire wardrobe. So she came up with a plan to save money and have the clothes she needed. It wasn’t wardrobing, but it was still return fraud.
She started to buy the clothes from our store with her employee discount. They had the regular EAS tags and the Alpha Shark tags. At the purchase, the EAS tags came off, and the Alpha Shark tags stayed on. This was the normal checkout procedure.
Later she would come back to the store with the empty shopping bag. She would walk around the store and put identical items of the clothes she purchased into the bag and then return them with her receipt.
The returns employee never thought otherwise because she had a receipt and the wardrobing tags were still attached. The returns associates were more concerned with wardrobing and forgot that return fraud can still happen even if the wardrobing tags are still attached to the clothing.
It wasn’t after we noticed that she was returning 100% of her purchases that we started to investigate. Sure enough it was a case of return fraud that had been overlooked because we were only focused on wardrobing retail.

A Little Peer Pressure- Checkpoint tags

How do checkpoint tags work against employee theft when they know everything about them? It might seem like it would be the opposite- an anti deterrent, if you will. Employees know all of our secrets; they hold the bag of tricks.
They have a full awareness of how clothing security tags work, where the clothing alarm is, and how to deactivate them. With all of that knowledge and insight, wouldn’t it be easier for the employees to work around the clothing security?
The answer lies with all of the employees having this same knowledge. That means for an employee to go up to a register to deactivate a tag and there are no customers around, or they don’t deactivate a tag and set the alarm off- employees will notice.
Trust me, your employees see more than what they often admit to. They take note when employees are late to work or take longer/ too many breaks.
They know when someone is slacking and when someone is pulling their weight.
They will know when an employee is doing something they shouldn’t.
Even though these employees may not recognize that they are witnessing employee theft, they will recognize something as wrong. It is this peer pressure that is tied to the security tags on clothes that makes this deterrent work.

Lack of Funds- Clothing Security Tags

Clothing security tags are an effective deterrent against two groups of shoplifters that are not willing to risk too much effort, for fear of getting caught.
When times are good and parents have more disposable income, they are more willing to spend money on name brand items of clothing. As times get harder and money is tighter, the same drive to purchase these items decreases.
The flip side is that when a parent’s cash runs short, teens and tweens (who rely on their parents for spending cash) are left without. That means the designer jeans and fashionable accessories are not as easy to come by.
Just because there is a decrease in the income to buy the clothing, doesn’t mean there is a decrease in desire for the clothing. That means it is still important to maintain security tags on clothes.
What we end up seeing is a combination of one of two events. Well meaning parents spend what little income they can on their kids. They feel that they must be taken care of before the parent’s own needs. Because they still have their own list of wants that they are unable to afford, these parents might turn to theft to supplement their own wants.
The kids are in a similar boat. Because they do not have the extra income to buy these items, they might decide to make an attempt at theft. If they do not see any clothing security, they are more apt to steal than if there is something (like checkpoint tags) standing in their way.
