Follow The Lines- Checkpoint Security Systems

We had a shoplifter in our store over the weekend. We knew that he was up to something based on his actions. He had entered the store and then bee lined over to our denim wall. Instead of looking at the tags, or the waistbands of the jeans- presumably to find his size- he followed the leg of each pair of jeans down to the end. What he was checking for was electronic article surveillance tags (EAS) commonly called security tags.
The shoplifter was trying to find pairs of jeans that did not have these EAS tags on them. He wanted to be able to steal the jeans without being conspicuously identified by an alarm sounding as he exited the store. If he found a pair of jeans without the tags, he had a better chance of making a clean escape.
What the shoplifter did not realize was that his actions actually made him more obvious. He was not exhibiting behaviors that most paying shoppers do. Shoppers look for their size of jeans, which is found somewhere, near the waistband, not at the bottom of the leg. Even if a shopper picks out a few jeans with similar sizes to try on, they still are more focused on the sizing found near the waistband.

Do A Spot Check- Security Tags on Clothes

When you use security tags on clothes, as owners and managers we often focus our efforts on compliance. Did we tag all of the clothing? Are the Checkpoint Tags in the proper location on the garment? Do we have a new item that we want to enhance our clothing security with?
What we often forget about is how to train our employees in responding to alarms generated by the clothing security tags. If you had a bag in your hand, with an item inside that had a clothing security tag on it, and walked out the exit door triggering the alarm, what would your employees do?
Would they come over to deactivate the tags? Would they validate the receipt? Would they simply ignore the alarm and continue on with what they are doing?
That is where training your employees on the expectations are critical. It doesn’t matter how many times an alarm goes off, if no one responds, all of your time and effort to tag the merchandise is rendered useless.
More often than not, the reason why employees disregard the alarms is because they do not feel comfortable with how to respond. By properly training them and showing them your own example of how to respond, your alarm activations will be much more productive.

React and Reactivate- Checkpoint Tags

Checkpoint Tags are hard plastic tags used in almost every major retailer as a way to stop shoplifting. The basic premise is simple. Apply the tags before the merchandise is displayed on the sales floor. At the point of sale, an employee removes the Checkpoint Tags with a Checkpoint Security System detacher. The tags are removed in two parts- the pin and the button. Each part is put into a bin to be recycled for use with the next shipment of merchandise.
Checkpoint Labels are also used to stop shoplifting, but in a different way. Where the tags are designed to be visible to shoppers and shoplifters, Checkpoint Labels are usually hidden form view. The labels are put in boxes, or inside of a pocket. Sometimes they are on the outside of a clamshell package.
Checkpoint Labels are also deactivated at the point of sale, but they are not removed from the merchandise. The Checkpoint Security System deactivator pad deactivates the labels. As long as the label passes over the deactivator pad, the label will be deactivated.
Since the labels stay on the merchandise, they are not recycled onto new store merchandise like the tags are. New labels are put on those products, or the labels are reactivated if the merchandise is returned.

But Is It Illegal? –Wardrobing Retail

Wardrobing retail is a highly unethical process. Whether it is from the intent to wardrobe from the beginning, or an after thought from an outfit worn with buyer’s remorse it is morally wrong to return worn merchandise.
The problem for retailers is that it might not actually be illegal. There are some forms of return fraud that is very clearly illegal, however wardrobing is not one of them. Most state legislation only says that a retailer must post their return policy in a prominent location.
Additionally, there are still a fair amount of retailers that welcome back refunds of merchandise in any condition. That makes it even harder to form actual legislation that the majority of all retailers can agree on. Would you be happy if state laws outlined exactly how your return policy should read?
That leaves it up to the individual retailers to create their own return policy as well as finding clear-cut ways to discourage and reduce wardrobing within their stores.
Some retailers have found success through having an “all sales are final” policy. Simple and effective; no one can abuse a policy that has no margin for exception. As this can potentially alienate a large, honest customer base, maybe a less strict policy can be utilized. Maybe a 30-day policy would work, or implementing Alpha Shark Tags on all of your special occasion items can be effective in your situation.

Still A Leader- Checkpoint Systems

A Checkpoint Security System is an absolute necessity in any retail environment for good reason. They are proven industry leaders, and have been for decades. It is so common to have a Checkpoint Security System in place that any retailer who doesn’t have one is an immediate target for shoplifting.
Checkpoint Systems stop shoplifting because they are not only a recognizable brand, but because they have built their reputation on reliability and effectiveness.
A Checkpoint system is pretty straightforward. You start with the installation of door towers at your exit points. These towers are what creates and audible alarm when Checkpoint tags pass through.
The Checkpoint tags are the second part of the anti shoplifting system. The Checkpoint tags are hard plastic tags that pin onto merchandise, primarily clothing or accessories. The addition of just these two Checkpoint Systems components have been proven to reduce shoplifting losses by as much as 85 percent.
Additionally there are other kinds of equipment to stop shoplifting that Checkpoint Security System can install and service. These fall into the category of camera systems. The camera system will have cameras as well as recording and playback devices. While these are secondary to the Checkpoint tags for effectiveness, a camera system can be used as a deterrent for employee theft and to promote safety within the stores.

What Happened There? –Wardrobing

I recently bought a dress. Since I made the purchase online I never worried that the dress may have been involved in any wardrobing before I bought it. Unfortunately, once I received the dress in the mail, I went to try it on and there was a huge smudge of makeup all inside the dress. Ugh.
Now I can’t even begin to tell you the range of thoughts that went through my mind, but the first thing I did was to hop on the phone with customer service. Sure enough, this dress had been shipped from a store, and not from a warehouse or distribution center. Even better, this was the last one in my size.
I was given two options, return the dress or keep the dress with an extra ten percent discount. Since I really wanted the dress and the discount would cover dry cleaning, I went with option number two.
Because the dress came from an actual store, one of two things happened. The make up came from a customer trying the dress on, oblivious to the damage she did, or it came from a customer who was wardrobing.
Either way, the company lost out. They were shorted the discount that they gave me. Additionally, they lost me as a customer (and all the money I am spending elsewhere) because it was not worth the potential hassle to order anything from them again.

How It’s Made- Anti Shoplifting

If you have ever looked at Checkpoint tags or other tags designed for retail theft prevention, you might not realize just how sophisticated that piece of plastic actually is. Embedded within those molded shells is technology that is decades in the making. These tags are considered by some as a work in progress, as the EAS tags are constantly being improved upon.
The first step in making these anti shoplifting tags is to create the hard tag portion through an injection mold or is vacuum formed. The pin is generally made from nickel-plated steel.
The second step is to make the resonator. A resonator is a series of tiny metal loops or coils made out of appropriate magnetic metal (like copper) that will resonate in response to an interrogation signal (formed at the exit door towers of the Checkpoint Systems). This is the key to stop shoplifting. The resonator is what will trigger an alarm if a tag is left on, or label left activated.
Once the resonator is placed inside the Checkpoint tags (or similar) it is time for the locking mechanism to be added. This is the component that will hold the pin in place, preventing shoplifters to easily separate the two sides.
Now that the internal components are complete, the upper and lower sides of the plastic tag are heat fused or ultrasound sealed together completing the tag assembly.

Tie One On- Alpha Shark Tags

The news has been quick to point out that women are more likely than men to be wardrobing. One in six women will admit to having committed some sort of wardrobing retail in their lives. That doesn’t mean that men never do it that just hasn’t been the focus of media attention.
One of the more common items that men will buy, wear and then return is a tie. Just as a woman wants to have a new dress for each occasion she goes to, men want to update their looks to. A quality tie can sometimes run you just as much as a women’s special occasion dress can.
In most cases, it is even easier for a man to hide the tags while wearing a dress tie. Most of them can be sandwiched between the two ends of the tie, and sealed with a tie clip so no one else is the wiser.
Alpha Shark Tags are a great solution. The pins are delicate enough to not snag when attached. If the tag is properly attached to the lower third of the tie, the wardrobing tags will not be hidden even when the tie is tied around the purchaser’s neck.
This strategic placement is key to success. If the Alpha Shark Tag is to low, or on the wrong end, the tag can be hidden from view, rendering it ineffective against wardrobing.

Buried Within- Checkpoint Labels

Source tagging is a retail theft prevention practice of embedding Checkpoint labels, or other brands of retail theft prevention, within an actual product. This takes place at the point of manufacturing.
Source tagging takes the smallest possible Checkpoint labels and hides them in seams of clothing, or within the soles of popular athletic shoes. By affixing the labels within the actual product during production, a retailer’s payroll spent attaching hard tags to clothing and other products is reduced. Conversely, the retailers are also saving payroll and customer check out times as there is no need to remove, sort and recycle these embedded labels.
The labels are deactivated using the same deactivator pad used for most Checkpoint systems. There are no additional supplies or accessories to invest in since the source tagged labels are Checkpoint systems compatible. The labels will deactivate the same way any other exterior labels do, even though they are buried inside of a garment or product.
Designed as a better way to stop shoplifting, source tagged merchandise makes a shoplifter hesitate, as they can’t find the labels to defeat them. Rather than risk being caught by an alarm at the exit doors, the majority of your common shoplifters will bypass stealing from retailers that are known to utilize buried source tags.

It’s Sew Easy! – Security Tags On Clothes

For some retail boutiques, it is all about the brand image. That is a key selling point for your customers- their clothing came from the boutique, not some mass merchandise clothing store. In reality, how many boutiques have the resources to create and manufacture their own lines? Not very many, so the solution comes in re-branding existing clothing that may or may not have any clothing security attached.
When a boutique re-brands their clothing, they are usually taking other designer’s clothing and eliminating these logos and other identifying tags. The boutique will then sew in their own tags and logos; effectively creating their own in house brand of clothing and merchandise.
Fortunately for these small boutiques, this re-branding process is a prefect time to add security tags to clothes. Checkpoint tags have a sew- in label that is the perfect clothing security.
These sew- in labels are highly efficient from a labor and payroll perspective. The labels are sewn into the garment at the same time the boutique’s labels and tags are sewn in, saving time and effort.
The labels are also customizable, which can further reinforce the boutiques brand and image.
Finally, the labels are harder for a shoplifter to find and remove. It really is a solution for clothing security tags that are sew easy!
