The Time Of Their Life- Alpha Shark Tags

For many schools, proms and graduations are over. The need for formal and special occasion wear has come and gone. Teenagers across the United States have had the time of their lives. For many of them, they have also completed their wardrobing of their formal attire too.
The hard part of combating wardrobing retail is that there are blurred lines within the process. Stores take returns of items that are not worn. Stores take returns of items that are worn multiple times, but are defective. So why would it be so bad that someone wears clothing once, for a few hours, and then returns it?
Just because you can justify it, doesn’t make it any better, or any more ethical to be wardrobing retail. Retailers however do not have the luxury of entering into a discussion with these customers to convince them that wardrobing is bad.
The end result is that retailers need a better way to consistently uphold their return policies, while accommodating the legitimate customer return, and declining the fraudulent ones.
Alpha Shark Tags are designed to help clear up any grey area that a liberal return policy might have. The Alpha Shark Tags have the ability to hold a copy of the store’s return policy. They also provide a visual identifier for store employees to differentiate between a real customer and a wardrobing one.

Safety In Your Stores- Retail Theft Prevention

If customers will not enter a store, there is no way to sell them anything. If a customer comes in, but rushes to get out, any carefully laid out merchandising plans, sales and promotions will do no good to generate additional sales- the customer is simply oblivious to them.
When customers are avoiding being inside of a store for any length of time, the culprit if frequently due to an unsafe feeling. When customers do not feel safe, they are less likely to spend money and potentially ill stop shopping at a particular location.
What you can do to prevent avoidance of this kind is to create a safe environment for your customers and your employees.
Make sure parking lot lights are on (and working) when it starts to get dark. Use EAS tags and other kinds of theft prevention like cameras and domes to deter shoplifters and other criminals from even entering your store.
Build a relationship with your local police department, so they routinely stop by to say hi and make sure you are safe.
Preventing shoplifting theft is a perfect way to help build a safe reputation within your store. Customers are more likely to see someone stealing than employees are. If these customers feel unsafe, they will take their money and shop someplace else.

Why Do We Need Protection? – Clothing Security

Why do we need protection for our clothing inventory? Who is going to take our merchandise? These two questions come up frequently when I consult for small businesses that are not convinced that they need clothing security.
The first question is why? What they are really asking is why they should spend money on clothing security, when they might not actually need it. I answer them by explaining that clothing security is there for two reasons. One is to deter shoplifters from taking clothing and other items from your stores. The next is to stop the theft that might be taking place already, that you are not aware of.
Next we talk about who is going after clothing. Depending on what kind of clothing you carry, the attraction is different for specific kinds of shoplifters.
Some shoplifters are specifically looking for designer brands that they can resell easily on ebay, or in a flea market. Others are looking for personal usage of the merchandise. Whether they can’t afford, or simply don’t want to pay for new clothes, shoplifters often steal so they have something new to wear. Same thing goes for employees.
In any case, clothing security tags have been proven to reduce inventory shrink numbers by as much as 85 percent- more than what the cost of a system would be in most stores.

Online Prevention- Checkpoint Tags

Like many retailers, you may be starting to push an online shopping experience for your existing customers. An online store is also a great way to reach a whole new customer base. Unless you are doing extremely well, you are probably not at a point where you need a separate and distinct shipping warehouse to fulfill your online orders. That means you are fulfilling orders out of your existing stock, from your existing brick and mortar locations.
That makes it even more important to make sure your employees are packaging orders correctly. They need to ensure the product’s size, color, brand and quantity are what have actually been ordered. Your employees also need to make sure that any security tags have been removed or deactivated.
Based upon the product being shipped effects the potential for customer service fail when the customer receives the product. For instance, if a customer orders an item of clothing and the hard security tag has been left on, the customer cannot effectively wear that item. They have to send the item back and wait for a reshipment of that item.
Soft tags are less likely to cause a major issue if they are not deactivated before shipping, but they may still cause some problems for the customer.

A Two Part System- Clothing Security Tags

In order for clothing security to be effective, you have to have a certain level of quality in your security resources and tools. I had a camera system once that spent more time waiting for a service tech to come fix it, than I did actually using the system. I ended up not relying on those cameras because I didn’t want to have to need them and then find out they weren’t working.
It was a cheap system that had been pieced together over the years. It wasn’t until we upgraded to a total camera system package did I truly feel I could rely on the cameras as part of my clothing security system.
The same thing goes with our clothing security tags. I have seen some retailers use cheaply made, and cheaply sold, clothing security tags. Boy, do these not work well for anything. If I was to look closely at the tags, I could see the actual seam in the middle of the hard shell. On some of them, the seam was actually breaking apart.
Any shoplifter with an ounce of persistence could easily pry the two sides apart with a screwdriver or other tool. Once the two sides are pried apart, the shoplifter has access to the inner locking mechanism, which is what holds the pin in place on your clothing. Once the pin is removed, the clothing security tags are rendered completely ineffective.

In The Blink Of An Eye- Checkpoint Tags

It happened in the blink of an eye. It took less than ninety seconds and the thieves were in, out, and gone. Had it not been for the security alarm the thieves set off, we may not have even noticed the theft until it was way to late to do anything about it.
I worked at a major upscale department store. We had several entrance doors in our location, and I had gone to start locking them all up as we closed down for the night. As I was walking to lock up the last door, I heard the security alarms go off. I looked up and saw five guys with their arms loaded with expensive handbags running out the door. The security tags on the handbags set the alarm off notifying us of the problem.
Unfortunately, the security tags did not deter these professional thieves. They knew they were going to be fast getting in and out, and would set the alarm off as they went.
What they didn’t count on was the camera system we had documenting their every move. Even though they disregarded the tags, the alarm let us know what was happening. We were able to use this information to build a case with the police department, which led to their arrest.
Had we not had the tags on to set the alarm off, we would not have noticed that night that the handbags had been stolen.

A Long Talk Over Coffee- Wardrobing

I was at a local coffee shop this morning when I overheard the conversation at the next table. Two ladies were talking about the interview one of them had later. Next thing I knew, the conversation turned to wardrobing.
One of the ladies was expressing her disgust at the other coffee shop patrons who were walking to closely to her with their cups of coffee. She talked about how mad she would be if someone spilt even a drop of coffee on her new outfit.
At first I sympathized thinking that if I had bought a new outfit to impress a potential employer, I would not want to show up with coffee stains all over it. Then I realized that the lady was upset because she needed to keep the outfit nice so she could return it to the store the next day.
It actually made me pretty disgusted, and I wanted to “accidentally” spill my coffee on her, but what good would that do? The lady was so open about her wardrobing decision that this very clearly was not her first time doing so. Unfortunately, this also would not be her last.
Wardrobing retail was part of her lifestyle. It was just something she had done for so long, that she really didn’t see anything wrong with it.
As a retailer, it is our job not to try and change the perception of these customers. It is our job to eliminate the opportunity within our own store for wardrobing to take place.

Over the Line- Anti Shoplifting

Before a shoplifter considers stealing from a store, they first need to have a motive for doing so. Part of effective anti shoplifting strategies is in knowing and understanding how a person’s motivation drives them over the line to commit a crime.
Specific motives can vary widely amongst shoplifters, but a safe generalization is that they are trying to get something for nothing.
A shoplifter’s motivation can come from greed- wanting more than what they can afford. Maybe they are trying to afford the latest and greatest tech gadget. Maybe they are trying to keep up with the most current fashion trends.
A shoplifter’s motivation can also be driven by necessity; they simply cannot afford to purchase something like food or diapers. Maybe their debts are out of control and they steal because there is nothing left. Maybe they lost their job and have nothing.
When this motivation to steal is coupled with the opportunity to commit the crime with a lowered risk of getting caught, you can be sure that they will make an attempt to steal. By understanding this cycle of events, you can gear your anti shoplifting strategies and programs toward effective ways to stop shoplifting.

Using Your Money- Clothing Security Tags

When you diligently add clothing security to all of the new merchandise comes into the store, you reduce the likelihood that shoplifters will target your store. This is particularly important of you sell on trend clothing and brands as a major art of your shrink losses can be due to theft from fashionistas who are filling their closets on your dime.
To increase the urgency and perceived need for a customer to buy more product, retailer’s focus on the next season’s incoming merchandise. Touted as the latest and greatest, customers are being lured back to by more clothing. From email campaigns to in store displays, retailer’s focus on the latest fashion to come off the delivery trucks and make sure their customers are intimately aware of what fashion trend is now in stock.
Unfortunately, these marketing lures also bring in the shoplifter who is trying to stay ahead of the fashion trends by always having the latest styles and products. The sad reality is that for those that cannot afford the clothing, they turn to shoplifting to fill their closets.
Clothing security tags prevents your store from being targeted by shoplifters. When used consistently, these security tags on clothes serve as a warning that each season’s merchandise is protected.
Shoplifters will know that there is no point in even checking to see if the current season’s merchandise has been secured, because you are one step ahead of them.

Billions Lost To Organized Retail Crime- Retail Theft Prevention

National estimates are around 30 billion dollars worth of losses at the hands of Organized Retail Theft crimes. You heard that right, 30 BILLION dollars in losses. That is massive. It is also indicative that these crimes are so widespread that they will affect every retailer, both large and small.
While major retailers have multiple locations and larger quantities of desirable merchandise making them attractive to organized retail crime, they also have more security and theft prevention resources available to help combat those thefts and inventory losses.
Smaller retailers, who may not have the most desirable selection of merchandise, may actually find themselves more prone to organized retail crime because their stores are more vulnerable without inventory security devices, or other EAS and camera systems.
The biggest take away is that organized retail crime will seek out the greatest path of least resistance. If you have any merchandise at all that can be resold, or otherwise profited from, and you have minimal store security, you can bet that organized retail crime will be a factor in your store.
The point of organized retail crime is to take advantage of retail merchandise for their benefit. These thieves do not care if they get their haul in one big job, or in multiple smaller ones.
