For Your Viewing Pleasure – Clothing Security Tags

As a merchandising manager, I have spent countless hours trying to find the balance between my clothing security and my visual display and merchandising guidelines. To be used in conjunction with your Checkpoint tags, the Alpha Security Fashion2 is smaller and more visually appealing. These clothing security tags are customer friendly, fashion forward, and of course a huge deterrent for shoplifters.

Just because you are using clothing security tags for loss prevention does not mean that you can’t continue to make your product and your displays look their very best. The biggest difference these tags have is that they are much smaller. They are also available in black instead of just a standard white. This makes them less obvious visually in your presentations, but does not conceal them completely from the roving eye of a shoplifter.

Security tags on clothes should not be a distraction from marketing or sales promotions. By making these particular tags smaller, easier to color coordinate with darker fabrics, and be overall less obvious is a huge win. There is the same high quality and reliability as a clothing alarm that comes with Checkpoint tags

Your visual presentation will not be compromised in the same way it has been for years when you use big and bulky clothing security tags.

A Flick of the Wrist – Checkpoint Security Tags

If you have been searching for anti-shoplifting tools to stop shoplifting, you might have seen a slew of knock off Checkpoint security tags. These are tags that work with Checkpoint systems, but are not authorized Checkpoint security tags.

It might be enticing to buy these knock off tags because they are less expensive than Checkpoint security tags. What you might find out is that there is a reason why these tags are so cheap.

Authorized Checkpoint tags are designed to a different quality standard than these other tags. One of the most significant differences is in the quality of construction.

Checkpoint tags are made to be a seamless piece of molded plastic that has the EAS tag imbedded within it. Part of the success of the tag is that the EAS component cannot be accessed and subsequently disabled.

When you have an unauthorized tag, the construction quality can vary greatly. Often the tag has a seam in it that can easily be pried open. It doesn’t take specialist equipment either. A screwdriver or even a small pocketknife can pry the tag apart revealing the inner contents.

Once the tag is in two pieces, the EAS component can easily be discarded. Without the risk of sounding an alarm, your merchandise is wide open for the taking.

Easy To Use – Clothing Security

I am generally a very well organized person – definitely not a space cadet.  I have a place for everything and everything in its place. I have To Do lists, Task lists, calendars, organizers, email reminders, etc. If you can name it, I have probably tried it at some point in my quest for organization.

Retail is a particularly challenging environment in which to achieve and maintain organization.  In the course of going from my office (around three departments and up a flight of stairs to another group of offices), I can be stopped by three to thirty people, each one requiring something of me. If I don’t record this in my notebook, I will likely forget; and if I lose the notebook in which I wrote the list, well things can easily start to fall apart.

Needless to say, I like to stay organized for the sake of my own survival. That’s why I like things that are easy to use, especially when it comes to clothing security.

Clothing security tags usually have two separate parts to them. This makes them easy to use and even easier to lose one part of the tag. Half a tag will do nothing for your clothing security. The Alpha Fashion2 Accessory Tag is a great product that eliminates this problem.  It is a Checkpoint tag, lanyard and pin all in one – no parts to lose, quick, and easy to use.

What Do You See – Checkpoint Systems

When you walk into a big box retailer, what do you see? I’ll bet you see clothing, general merchandise; maybe some power equipment or groceries. There are probably several employees in uniform, and maybe one or two employees that are in “plain clothes” that you don’t see. What about a Checkpoint Security System?

If the retailer has done it well, you should not be acutely aware of the Checkpoint System they have in place. It is their job to be discrete enough that you don’t feel like you are walking into Ft. Knox. You, as a customer should have a pleasant and enjoyable shopping experience while in their stores.

If you are not a shopper, but a shoplifter, the Checkpoint Security System is designed to stop shoplifting. By using a combination of anti-shoplifting tools like cameras, EAS tags, alarms, and Public View Monitors, big box retailers know their security systems will stand out to those who are looking for them.

As a small business owner, it is ok to model your own loss prevention and security after the big box model. You may not need to incorporate all of the things that those big retailers do, but even a fraction of those tools will help you stop shoplifting in your store.

Now, Not Later – Clothing Security

I frequently say to my toddler, “whenever you are ready”. It may seem sarcastic, but it helps me put things back into perspective by reminding me that when I am with her, I am on her time frame, not mine. It is one of the few times in life that I am challenged to slow down, not speed up.

“Whenever you are ready” is more likely to mean, “it should have been done 10 minutes ago” in my professional life. I put this same urgency into clothing security. It is a huge and potentially costly mistake to wait to attach clothing security tags such as Checkpoint tags until “someone” feels like doing it. A thief will likely show up and rob you blind while “someone” is waiting around to get the job done.

Shoplifters, especially professional ones, are looking for every opportunity to exploit these very situations. It only takes one unlocked door, one stack of jeans without clothing security tags, or one moment of inattentiveness to fuel a very costly situation.

Make sure that “whenever you are ready” means “do it right, and do it right now”.

Clothing security is about consistency and timeliness in execution. Having the finest clothing security such as Checkpoint tags does absolutely no good if they are left sitting in a basket somewhere, instead of where they belong – on your merchandise.

When Opportunity Knocks – Retail Theft Prevention

How do you stop shoplifting when the shoplifter doesn’t know that they are going to steal?

What? Are we supposed to be mind readers here? How can that even be possible?

Well the reality is that retail theft prevention really can stop shoplifting by opportunist shoplifters. I guess I should start at the beginning. You don’t have to be a mind reader or have a crystal ball. Opportunist shoplifters are shoplifters that don’t plan on coming into your store to steal.

They are presented with the opportunity to steal and decide to take it.  What if someone leaves a shirt in a fitting room, and you don’t clean it out before the next person goes in. They may decide that to take that shirt because they are aware that no one knows the shirt is in the fitting room. Therefore, no one will know it is gone.

How about taking a small piece of jewelry because no one is looking, or because no one came to help them?

What if your wrap stand or checkout is not cleaned off and an additional piece of merchandise is accidentally put into a bag. The customer didn’t take it, but they also probably won’t bother to return it when they get home and discover the error.

This is where retail theft prevention comes into play. Anti-shoplifting tools like Checkpoint systems will help keep your customer’s honest. It will also help detect errors at the point of sale.

My Time or Yours? – Clothing Security Tags

I was watching a suspected shoplifter over the weekend. As far as clothing security goes, she knew what to look for. She was checking a selection of clothing for Clothing Security Tags. She would go through a table of shirts, for example, and see if she could find one without a tag on it.

If no one else was in the area, she would casually walk to a corner and stuff her bag with the un-sensor tagged merchandise. She would go back to the clothing area and start looking through a new section of merchandise for the checkpoint tags. Once she could fit no more in, she would make her way to the exit. Luckily for us, we were watching and were able to make the apprehension.

Unfortunately, after reviewing more video from the day, we realized that she had been in the store at least three other times. There’s no way to tell how much we lost in those stuffed bags of merchandise because the security tags on clothes were not 100% accurate.

We learned an important lesson about why we need to stay consistent with our clothing security tags. I have a story that can help remind my employees that even if they don’t have the time to properly tag, it doesn’t mean that a shoplifter doesn’t have time to look for our errors.

The Nuts and Bolts – Checkpoint Systems

Have you ever wondered how Checkpoint Security Tags Checkpoint labels work.

There are two main components to Checkpoint systems. The towers, which are stationed at an entrance door, and the Checkpoint Security tags or Checkpoint labels.

The towers flank the door and send out a signal, creating a sort of force field around your door. An audible alarm is generated any time a tag enters this field,. This alerts your staff to the door to offer quality customer service to validate a false alarm, or ultimately to recognize a theft in progress.

By just having the Checkpoint system at your door, many would be thieves will bypass your establishment, because you are not an easy target to hit. This element, in itself, helps stop shoplifting in your store. Thieves want to be able to slip by undetected. If they see an obstacle they would have to overcome before making a clean escape, they will think twice about that particular target.

The Checkpoint Security tags will also stop shoplifting by providing another visual cue. These tags affix to garments and are only deactivated by being removed by a store associate. If you can’t remove the tag, the garment is rendered useless to a shoplifter.

Safety First – Checkpoint Tags

Many years ago, a famous actress was arrested stealing clothes from a high dollar retailer. When she was apprehended, there was a cut on her finger. While that little detail might not mean anything to the common observer, to anyone in clothing security, it means all the difference in the world.

There is a reason why retailers almost universally use Checkpoint tags as their preferred brand of clothing security tags; in a word – Quality. Just because you use security tags on clothes doesn’t mean the crooks will simply throw their hands up and walk away. The unskilled ones will, but there are those out there that will make attempts to defeat the Checkpoint tags.

That means your clothing security tags need to be beyond reproach. No one should be able to come in with a pocketknife or a pair of pliers and pries open the tags to defeat them and bypass the clothing alarm. Your tags should be seamless and fool proof.

That is what happened to the actress. She tried to pry apart the Checkpoint Tags. When they didn’t easily open, the knife slipped cutting herself. This action not only prevented the tag from being disabled, but it also gave the store further proof, in court, of her intent to commit the crime she had been accused of.

A Visible Dissuasion – Checkpoint Systems

Anti-shoplifting takes many forms. There are so many different reasons why someone steals in the first place. A study done by one of the major credit card companies showed that shoplifting is secondary only to going out to eat as a form of personal reward.

At some point, the need for the lift has to be significantly reduced through the probability (not just a possibility) of getting caught. If you cannot provide enough incentive to NOT steal, the internal need to steal will overcome a potentially honest shopper. Having Checkpoint systems that are visible and eminent will help persuade them not to steal.

Regarding shoplifting, getting a “lift” can actually mean two separate things. It is the literal shop-lift or the act of the theft that amateur or opportunist shoplifters are looking for.

They can also get the emotional or adrenaline lift from stealing and getting away with something. Just as there are shoppers who can get a similar lift from a great sale (think day after thanksgiving sale madness) these are people who get the psychological lift from getting something for free.

Retail theft prevention needs to be completely visible to stop shoplifting by this particular type of person. This doesn’t mean that every type of retail theft prevention you use needs to be visible; it just means that some parts of it need to be prominent to dissuade these lifters.
