Show ‘Em What You’ve Got- Anti Theft Devices

When faced with additional obstacles to get the product out the door with out being caught, most of these non-professional shoplifters will either abandon the thought of stealing, or they will go someplace else to steal their goods.
Anti shoplifting tools provide the visual deterrent needed to do just that- prevent retail theft.
For some, it might seem counterproductive to give away your secrets as to what kinds of security you use to prevent retail theft. In reality, it is quite the opposite. You see, when someone is looking to steal, they are going to look for the path of least resistance.
If they do not see any anti theft devices, they assume the path is clear of any type of resistance. This makes a store a bigger target, or a product more likely to be stolen. When you start to prevent retail theft by using anti theft devices you are showing the potential thieves what they are up against in order to steal successfully.

Safe and Secure- Clothing Alarm

Cable locking systems are an ideal way to protect runs of clothing like jackets, handbags or suits. The steel cables provide reliable clothing security and the clothing alarm is built into the power system. That means you don’t need to wait for an alarm to go off at the door before you realize that the merchandise is being stolen.
The downside to cable locking systems is that they pose a potential safety hazard. The cables are generally only one size that is quite lengthy to incorporate the maximum amount of merchandise. The power supply frequently needs to be plugged into an outlet to make the clothing alarm operable. The end result can be an unsightly mess of cords and plugs and wires. All of which are difficult to shop around and could be easy to trip over.
Accidents are extremely costly due to the medical expenses involved in addition to the potential longevity of the accident claim. It is very rare that the cost of one accident is less than the costs incurred through multiple shoplifting losses.
By switching to the Alpha Security CableLoks you can continue to use top quality clothing security tags without all of the bulk and potential tripping hazards. By creating a safer environment you are saving yourself thousands of dollars from potential general liability claims.

An Unexpected Conversion- Anti Shoplifting

Retail theft prevention isn’t only about anti shoplifting. It is about the message within the community about how your store goes beyond Checkpoint systems. When your retail theft prevention involves the working knowledge of local laws and ordinances, you might find that there are hidden benefits to help stop shoplifting losses in your stores.
In some states, a felony charge can happen with as little as two hundred dollars. For others, it can be anywhere from five hundred to a thousand dollars. Knowing this information is essential to your retail theft prevention. Additionally, you may be able to include the taxes on the item when you charge a shoplifter. If that is the case (check your local jurisdictions first) then you may be able to increase the severity of the charges.
For example: In one state that I worked, where five hundred dollars in losses was considered felony level theft, we had a very desirable item that was frequently stolen. The cost of this item was four hundred and ninety-five dollars. After conferring with local prosecutors, we discovered we could include the dollar amount of sales tax with the dollar value of the merchandise and it would then exceed the five hundred dollar mark. This converted the shoplifter’s charges from a misdemeanor theft to a felony.
It wasn’t long before the criminal community discovered this change. Shoplifting incidents were greatly reduced at our store as a result.

The Least Complicated – Clothing Alarm

Shoplifters will always find the path of least resistance. When they are trying to shoplift clothing, they will go out of their way to find merchandise that does not have any clothing security tags on them.

If that is not possible, the next thing that a shoplifter does is to try and leave the store without any visual clues that they have any merchandise with them. That means they will try to conceal the stolen product.

Concealing merchandise is not about trying to bypass the clothing alarms. It is about plausible deniability. Even if the clothing alarm responds to the concealed clothing security tags, a shoplifter who is seen empty handed can blame the alarm on something else.

If an employee does not see any merchandise being stolen, they have a harder time trying to get product back. Compare this to a shoplifter carrying merchandise, or holding a bulging purse. The visual cue that there might be stolen product makes it much less discrete for a shoplifter leaving the store.

More experienced shoplifters will use boosters to effectively conceal product. It can include false casts on arms and legs. There are ways to add extra hidden pockets to an already puffy coat. Sometimes it is as simple as a booster under a woman’s dress that looks like a pregnancy belly, but is really a hollow shell designed to have stolen clothing stuffed inside of it.

Employee Theft- Retail Security

I knew that Checkpoint labels and Checkpoint tags were originally designed as anti theft devices to protect against external theft- or shoplifters. What I didn’t know was how these same devices are a theft deterrent for employees as well.
Did you know that retail security could help you eliminate or reduce employee theft in your business?
It took me a long time to figure that out. It wasn’t until I had some actual training in loss prevention that I realized how truly multifunctional anti theft devices could be for both anti shoplifting and employee theft deterrents.
You see when an employee looks to steal merchandise, they go through a very similar process that a shoplifter does.
They look for a quiet moment when no one is watching to commit their act. They look to figure out how to get the merchandise out of the store. They also look to see how which merchandise would be best to take.
If the merchandise has no anti theft devices attached, then the merchandise is more desirable. It will be easier to get out the door undetected by other employees or management. When you use retail security, both shoplifters and employees are less likely to steal from you.

Not The Trade Off You Are Looking For- Security Tags on Clothes

Accidents are extremely costly due to the medical expenses involved in addition to the potential longevity of the accident claim. It is very rare that the cost of one accident is less than the costs incurred through multiple shoplifting losses. Clothing security is financially ineffective if you are creating unsafe environments.
Cable locking systems are an ideal way to protect runs of clothing like jackets, handbags or suits. The power system has a built in clothing alarm. The steel cords are highly effective security tags on clothes.
The downside to cable locking systems is that they pose a potential safety hazard. The cables are generally only one size that is quite lengthy to incorporate the maximum amount of merchandise.

Another Pressing Matter- Anti Theft Devices

Just like every store employee, at some point you have to stop watching a suspected shoplifter in order to attend to another function of your job. I had one particular incident that I still think of because I knew this was a solid case, and our lack of clothing security was why she was here.
One time I spent thirty minutes waiting and “cleaning” the fitting room, because there was a girl inside, who was going to steal some shirts, and kept checking to see if I left. I was bound and determined that I could outwait her. Eventually she had to give up, right?
That was a great idea, at least until I had another pressing matter come up.
There was a hurt customer that I needed to attend to. So I left my potential suspect to address the injured customer. It didn’t take long before I saw the girl leave. When I went to see if she left shirts, all I found was a pile of empty hangers.
I knew that if we had used anti theft devices, even if they were cheap labels and cheap tags, this girl would not have left with our merchandise.

Through The Front Door – Retail Theft Prevention

I recently had an opportunity to speak to several peers in the retail industry. We chatted about a variety of topics but the conversation soon turned toward our issues with retail theft prevention. It seemed we all were experiencing some form of refund or return fraud and didn’t know how to handle it.

For some of my peers, the refund fraud was causing more issues with policies. They did not have policies in place regarding refunds that did not have a receipt. As a result, refunders targeted them on almost a daily basis.

For others, they did not use anti-shoplifting devices for retail theft prevention. Since the theft of the merchandise was so easy, the store was viewed as an easy refund target within the community.

Our store uses checkpoint systems to stop shoplifting. This helps to alleviate most of the criminal element from coming into the store to start with. Next, these same tools that we use for retail theft prevention also help clue us in when someone tries a fraudulent refund. They come to the cashier and try to refund merchandise that still has anti shoplifting tags still attached, and no receipt.

We started a policy of allowing customers three no receipted refunds within a six-month period before we declined the return. That gave the legitimate shopper an opportunity to return items that a receipt was lost, or they received the items as a gift.

The Other Side of Training – Clothing Security

When you conduct loss prevention training, how far are you taking it? There are several main parts when you train your employees about your store’s clothing security and the clothing alarm system.

The first part is the technical side of things. You have to teach your employees how to use the system. Show them what happens when clothing security tags come too close to the exit doors. How close can you get before the clothing alarm goes off? It is important to know that customers can be shopping close by with no intention of exiting the store and still set an alarm off. They also need to know how close to the doors they can merchandise product with clothing security tags or they will set off false alarms all day long.

Your employees also need to know that Checkpoint tags need to be removed. Just passing them over the deactivator pads cannot deactivate the tags. The soft labels, on the other hand need to be passed over the deactivator pads, but there is a field in which they need to pass. If the cashier is not putting them over the pad within the designated field the clothing alarm will go off.

Clothing security training is not just about putting security tags on clothes. It is about how the system works as a whole and the role your employees play in making sure it is working as it should.

Another Employee Lost- Stop Shoplifting

Last night we had another employee lost to temptation. They seemed to be so in tune to retail theft prevention. They were always quick to point the finger at potential shoplifters and other employees who were stealing.
It was unfortunate to discover that all of this finger pointing was just a smoke screen. He was stealing merchandise and had been for a very long time. Had it not been for our checkpoint security tags we may not have ever caught him.
He was smart enough to understand that if he simply bagged up merchandise, the EAS alarm would sound when the checkpoint security tags passed through the exit doors. So he made sure that he went to the register to deactivate all of the tags.
He also realized that if he was deactivating tags at the register, he needed it to look like he was helping a real customer. So he had friends come in to “check out”.
One day, he must have missed a tag because the alarm went off when the customer/ friend left. Later on when I reviewed the alarms and the receipts I realized that no actual sale took place. I researched more and found out just how many time he had been faking sales. Had it not been for the checkpoint security tags to stop shoplifting, we may not have ever found out his employee was stealing.
