I Thought I Had It- Retail Theft Prevention

One of my managers came to me the other day because they thought they were loosing their mind. He kept having customers looking for a particular item, and when he would go to the selling shelf, he would find the entire row of product gone. Since he did a lot of the stocking himself, he knew that he had just filled the shelf recently. I knew immediately that we needed to amend our retail theft prevention.

Make A Good Impression- Wardrobing

I recently had a chance to interview several recent college graduates. We talked about the opportunities that were opening up to them, now that they had their degrees. The conversation then turned to interviewing skills and general interviewing tips for their job hunt. I wasn’t expecting the moral conversation about wardrobing that was about to follow.
 As we talked about how to dress professionally, one of the grads started talking about how she is always prepared because she buys a new outfit for each interview and then returns it. She talked about how the hardest item to return was shoes. When you wear them outside, they immediately begin to show wear on the soles- retailers look for that at the returns desk. Everything else was pretty easy to return.
She figured out that if a suit jacket has the price tag on the sleeve she could bend the plastic on the attachment and slide it carefully through the hole in the price tag. Instead of clipping the plastic piece, she pushes it back inside the sleeve for the interview. 
After she is done, she bends the plastic end back through the hole of the price tag. By doing this, the employer never sees the evidence of her wardrobing, and the retailer that she is returning the outfit to never suspect anything because the tag is still attached.

It gets even worse. Of those women, one in eleven of them are wardrobing habitually. That means that this is a part of their day to day lives, and are probably one of the stores “best customers” since they are in all the time buying things. Ugh.
Special occasion items are one of the biggest victims of wardrobing. You have the fashionista that is desperately trying to keep up with the latest trends, the high school prom go-er who wants a beautiful dress, but can’t afford it, and the ladies of society who wouldn’t be caught dead wearing the same thing twice.
Whether through society’s pressure or simply an internal desire to be better than the next, wardrobing retail is a way to stay ahead of the curb. Many of these women will go to great lengths just to keep the merchandise in pristine condition so they can be assured of getting their full refund later.

Two For One Sale- Clothing Security

I had an incident recently where a woman had come into the store to buy a new swim set. She thought that she could be sneaky and basically, con the cashier. 
This woman picked out her two-piece swimsuit and put them on the same hanger. Then she pulled the price tag off of one of the pieces. She was trying to make it look like the pieces were to be sold as a set, instead of individually.
We have had more success with selling swim items separately, instead of as a two-piece set. 
Since we no longer sell swimsuits in a set, everything is sold as an individual item; it was pretty easy for the cashier to spot what was going on. The cashier explained that it was two separate pieces, and she needed to get the price for both items. 
Needless to say the woman barked out something rude and left without her half price swimsuit.
Beyond spotting these kinds of two for one scams, we have found several other benefits to only selling swimsuit separates as individual items, instead of as a set.
Customers who can buy the correct top and bottom sizes they need, and are much happier with their purchase, decreasing the amount of returns we have on these items. We also have fewer issues with miss-matched sets. I had an incident recently where a woman had come into the store to buy a new swim set. She thought that she could be sneaky and basically, con the cashier.

This woman picked out her two-piece swimsuit and put them on the same hanger. Then she pulled the price tag off of one of the pieces. She was trying to make it look like the pieces were to be sold as a set, instead of individually.We have had more success with selling swim items separately, instead of as a two-piece set.

Since we no longer sell swimsuits in a set, everything is sold as an individual item; it was pretty easy for the cashier to spot what was going on. The cashier explained that it was two separate pieces, and she needed to get the price for both items.

Needless to say the woman barked out something rude and left without her half price swimsuit.

Beyond spotting these kinds of two for one scams, we have found several other benefits to only selling swimsuit separates as individual items, instead of as a set.

Customers who can buy the correct top and bottom sizes they need, and are much happier with their purchase, decreasing the amount of returns we have on these items. We also have fewer issues with miss-matched sets. Trade You Later- Checkpoint Systems

A recent news story came out around a lady who decided to go into her local supermarket to shoplift. This woman walked over to the seafood section and quickly picked up several packages of lobster tails. She picked up so many packages that the total was over $80 dollars worth. Since she didn’t think to bring a bag with her, she used the next best thing- her pants. The store’s security team didn’t need to have sophisticated anti shoplifting devices, like Checkpoint Systems, to stop this very obvious crime from taking place.
The store security team watched as she stuffed her pants full of packages of lobster tails and then wobbled her way to the exit doors. Because her pants were so full, she was even more obvious as she tried to leave. Now, the store actually did use Checkpoint Systems for their cameras and also in the soaker pads inside the lobster tail’s packaging. If this shoplifter had been more discrete, the store would have had other avenues to recognize this theft.
When she was apprehended, she told police that she was going to trade the tails to a friend for either a buffet lunch or for some prescription drugs. Since it is hard to know someone’s motivation for stealing before they come in, it is best to have something like Checkpoint Systems in place to stop shoplifting.
