Use Your Leverage- Checkpoint Labels

When you have product stolen out of your inventory, who pays? Obviously, you do. You pay for the initial product that is lost and you will pay again to replace that same product to have more available for your customers to purchase. If you are installing the Checkpoint labels yourself to stop shoplifting, you might be loosing out on more profits than what you realize.
When you have product stolen, your vendors do not care. They might be sympathetic to your plight, but they are not out anything financially. In fact, your vendors are actually profiting by your losses. When you have to purchase inventory items twice, the vendor gets paid twice. When you have one of those two products stolen, you only get paid once- so who comes out ahead?
This is where you need to leverage your vendors into source tagging your Checkpoint labels. They should be paying their employees to take the time and effort to do the tagging for you, and save you money. If these vendors are resistant, you need to start looking at other suppliers who will source tag for you. There is no reason that your vendors can’t enhance your Checkpoint systems. Chances are they are already doing it for other businesses.

Don’t Hang Yourself- Anti Shoplifting

When I worked security for a major home improvement retailer, we frequently had expensive saw blades stolen. These blades came with the absolute minimal plastic packaging possible. They were designed to merchandise the blades on a pegboard with the maximum shelf quantity. The only retail theft prevention came from a small EAS label that was easy to peel off the plastic packaging.
Our thieves knew that we had limited resources to stop shoplifting these saw blades. The end result was that we lost them both frequently and in large quantities. Shoplifters would clear an entire peg worth of blades in just one swift motion. That could be anywhere from a few hundred to a thousand dollar loss all at once.
It wasn’t until recently that there was a better anti shoplifting product that could help us with this particular problem. The Alpha Security Alpha Spider Web’s unique multi-strand steel cable mesh bag presents an excellent visual deterrent.  The Alpha Spider Web still allows for open merchandising while providing anti shoplifting. Spider Webs provide breakthrough security for even the most irregular-shaped packages.
Had we had access to the Alpha Spider Web anti shoplifting devices, we never would have lost the thousands of dollars annually to shoplifters stealing our saw blades.

A Quick Addition- Checkpoint Tags

When the retailer rebrands their merchandise, they will typically take out any existing labels and sew in the new proprietary ones. For example, a shirt would have the original tags in the back of the neckline or collar. They would be taken out and replaced with the new brand tags. This replacement is the perfect time to add security tags on clothes in the form of Checkpoint Tags.
These Checkpoint tags are actually a paper label that is embedded with an anti theft device.
This anti theft label would be encased in a small pocket of material. The pockets are close to the size of a quarter, which is far less bulky when compared to the button and pin hard tags used by many retailers for clothing security.
The softer pocket material around the anti theft label helps reduce any discomfort a customer might experience when trying the shirt on- another benefit to using these clothing security tags.
The pocket is a secure way to add security tags on clothes with minimal time and effort on your part, or that of your employees. Best of all, the pocket is removed after being purchased by the customer once they get home, with a pair of common household shears. Because these labels are sewn into the neckline or seam, they are easily removed without as much risk of damaging the garment.

Like A Sore Thumb- Anti Shoplifting

Anti shoplifting tools, the form of EAS tags, labels and tower systems, are only as effective as the accuracy of how we use and employ those devices. We need to start by ensuring our tagging is 100% without fail. Then we can better analyze the reports that come from the digital alarm keypad.
Designed like the face of an ATM machine, employees can record what kind of alarm the EAS towers are recording. This feature is found on the more current models of the Checkpoint systems EAS alarm tower systems.
The options include false alarm, tag in area, recovery, test, etc. By training your employees to accurately record what caused the EAS alarm to register, you can develop an action plan to eliminate false alarms through better employee training.
With a digital report, you can break the alarm report down by the time of day the alarm activated. If you have a camera system, you can review who was going out the doors. You can also review the employee interaction at the point of the alarm, helping you assess what kind of training will best suit the situation.
Additionally, you can better stop shoplifting by making an actual incident more noticeable. Without extraneous EAS alarms clouding the accuracy of the Checkpoint systems, shoplifters start to stick out like a sore thumb.

A High Rate Of Return- Wardrobing Retail

Having products like wardrobing tags gives a better determining factor between a customer who is returning multiple items legitimately, and one who is wardrobing retail. In other words, they are purchasing clothing items and have no intention of keeping them after they have worn them.
More research is showing that a larger majority of loyal customers actually have a higher return velocity or rate of return. For a retailer to primarily rely on return velocity as a basis to accept or deny a return/ refund puts that retailer at risk for offending one of their best, and most legitimate customers.
This is due in part to the level of comfort a customer has in spending their money with a particular retailer. If they know they can take the time to find exactly what they want, they will come back.
Sometimes customers want to try on items in their own home. Mother’s of young or multiple children find it difficult to wrestle everyone into a fitting room and keep them calm long enough to actually try on and evaluate a clothing purchase. It is easier to buy several items that look like they might work out and try them on at home where they have the space and the time to do so.
Maybe they need to compare clothing styles and colors to items already in their wardrobe. It can be difficult to remember exactly what you have in your closet and then try to find an exact fit for a new piece. Both scenarios happen frequently and can contribute to a high return rate.
Both scenarios however will benefit from using wardrobing tags to show an employee that these frequent or large returns are indeed legitimate and should be honored appropriately with their refunds.

They Just Need One- Checkpoint Tags

If Checkpoint Tags are not consistently used on every article of merchandise that is determined to need retail theft prevention, you create an opening for shoplifters to take advantage of your store. The best and easiest way to determine if you are executing your tagging standard to 100% is to perform a self- audit for compliance rate.
A self-audit means taking either a sampling of those tagged items (for large quantities) or all of the items (for small quantities) and checking for accuracy.
If you conduct a sample of twenty items and only ten have tags, you are at 50% accuracy. 50% is not going to keep shoplifters at bay. Based on this audit you know where you need to focus your efforts to make sure you are at 100% accuracy.
Shoplifters are very mindful of any opportunity that is presented to them that makes it easier to steal. Even though you are using retail theft prevention as a way to stop shoplifting, you aren’t guaranteed that a shoplifter won’t every come into your store.
Anti shoplifting tools like Checkpoint Tags are a deterrent only when used properly. If a shoplifter is trying to steal a pair of jeans to resell later, they don’t care which jeans they get. They will dig through a stack of merchandise, if they see one pair without a Checkpoint Tag, that’s the pair they will try to steal from you.

Looking Ahead- Clothing Security

Confronting a shoplifter takes more than just responding to a clothing alarm and throwing out a wild accusation. It takes actual knowledge of the crime being committed. An accusation that has no truth to it can result in a wrongful detainment lawsuit from the accused, costing an enormous sum of money and time.
Confronting or detaining a shoplifter takes an intimate knowledge of the crime. That means you have to personally witness the event. You have to know one hundred percent, undeniably, that the clothing the person has is yours, and they intended to steal it.
One of the parts of recovering the merchandise during the initial detainment is to make sure the shoplifter knows you have complete knowledge of their actions. That usually includes you stating “ I know you have Item A hidden in your bag (pocket, purse, coat, etc)”. By stating the exact item and the exact location the item was concealed, you have proven your knowledge of their theft attempt.
While some of the larger companies have access to RFID tags as a part of their clothing security, smaller business still have to rely on being an actual eyewitness to determine which specific pieces of merchandise have been concealed.
If dedicating that kind of time to reduce shoplifting losses just isn’t plausible for you, security tags on clothes are an effective deterrent. They stop losses before they even begin.

Is This The Answer? – Wardrobing Tags

Are Wardrobing Tags really the answer to solve the problem of refund fraud in your store? Yes. Yes they are. Wardrobing tags, or more specifically Alpha Shark Tags are an easy and comprehensive way to determine if a refund should be taken.
If the Alpha Shark Tags is still on and un-tampered with, then there shouldn’t be a reason to suspect wardrobing. However, to really put an end to wardrobing retail and other more costly forms of refund fraud, there needs to be another action plan put into place.
When you clarify your return policy, customers have a better chance of understanding what they can and cannot do even before a purchase is made. It is easier to retain your customer base when they understand what the ground rules are. There is nothing more frustrating than trying to make a legitimate return, only to find out that the store will not allow it.
That means you need to make sure your return policy is clear and concise, while still protecting your inventory. A few examples are to start with posting your return policy in writing where the customer can see it. You can reinforce this by printing it on the back of the receipt, or adding a second attachment that has the return policy on it.
Secondly educate your employees to educate your customers. Have them verbally explain the policy as the customer is making their purchase. This is especially crucial if they are buying something that has special return considerations like a shortened time frame or all items must be in their original packaging.

Mixed Media Production- Checkpoint Security Systems

I worked for a company that had slowly been integrating their retail theft prevention over the course of several years. They had minimal finances to spare to stop shoplifting, but knew they needed to have as much as possible.

They would progressively add a camera here and a recording device there. Not much matched as far as brands, or systems go. It was very much a conglomerate of mixed media fixtures.

Eventually, the company signed on with Checkpoint Security System to install and maintain the door towers and the Checkpoint tags they were investing in. Since the contract with Checkpoint Security System also included a service contract for their camera system they thought they were completely covered.

The Checkpoint tags were pretty low maintenance, and the door towers had minimal issues beyond the annual servicing and testing. Where there were problems was with the camera systems.

As they would slowly break down, we discovered that Checkpoint Systems was very limited on what they could do to repair them. Because most of the cameras had been bought at a discount, they were off brands with limited warranties.

The end result was that we spent more to replace the camera systems with authorized Checkpoint Systems products. Had we spent the money initially on the Checkpoint Security Systems, we would not have had to pay for the cameras and components twice.
