Rutgers University criminologist Ronald V. Clarke came up with an acronym for what kinds of products are susceptible to theft. I had a store that was having an extremely hard time with one of their packaged products being stolen. For an attempt at anti shoplifting the store started to put out dummy cases in place of live product.

We were watching a group of thieves that were going into several of our stores in the market. The group’s ringleader was a very well dressed man. Every time we saw him, he had on a vivid (and distinct) purple suit and purple shoes. The alerts that we sent out to the stores to stop shoplifting all were titled “The Purple Man Group”.
