As Flexible As You Need It To Be- Checkpoint Systems

Many libraries that use Checkpoint systems are based off of technology similar to a retail environment. They use labels for library theft prevention that generate an alarm at the exit doors if the label is active. During the checkout process, the labels are deactivated, and reactivated when the library materials are checked back in.
As libraries upgrade to electronic checkouts, these Checkpoint systems can be easily incorporated.
An important feature is that these systems can be flexible in their cost. If the library is small, maybe only one deactivator pad is needed, and then shared between checkout stations. If more are needed as the library expands, then more deactivator pads can be added in.
Budgetary restraints should not prohibit a library from investing in feasible library theft prevent. Utilizing a system that can start out as small as what you really need it to be, and can also be expanded based upon other needs is a truly great solution.
It is also easier to take initial cost analysis to overseeing boards and trustees that can be fit into existing budgets. It is a much harder sell to try and convince them that an expensive and bulky system is needed. By sizing the library theft detection system to the actual size needed for your location makes it easier to actually get approval to go forward.

They Just Need One- Checkpoint Tags

If Checkpoint Tags are not consistently used on every article of merchandise that is determined to need retail theft prevention, you create an opening for shoplifters to take advantage of your store. The best and easiest way to determine if you are executing your tagging standard to 100% is to perform a self- audit for compliance rate.
A self-audit means taking either a sampling of those tagged items (for large quantities) or all of the items (for small quantities) and checking for accuracy.
If you conduct a sample of twenty items and only ten have tags, you are at 50% accuracy. 50% is not going to keep shoplifters at bay. Based on this audit you know where you need to focus your efforts to make sure you are at 100% accuracy.
Shoplifters are very mindful of any opportunity that is presented to them that makes it easier to steal. Even though you are using retail theft prevention as a way to stop shoplifting, you aren’t guaranteed that a shoplifter won’t every come into your store.
Anti shoplifting tools like Checkpoint Tags are a deterrent only when used properly. If a shoplifter is trying to steal a pair of jeans to resell later, they don’t care which jeans they get. They will dig through a stack of merchandise, if they see one pair without a Checkpoint Tag, that’s the pair they will try to steal from you.

Mixed Media Production- Checkpoint Security Systems

I worked for a company that had slowly been integrating their retail theft prevention over the course of several years. They had minimal finances to spare to stop shoplifting, but knew they needed to have as much as possible.

They would progressively add a camera here and a recording device there. Not much matched as far as brands, or systems go. It was very much a conglomerate of mixed media fixtures.

Eventually, the company signed on with Checkpoint Security System to install and maintain the door towers and the Checkpoint tags they were investing in. Since the contract with Checkpoint Security System also included a service contract for their camera system they thought they were completely covered.

The Checkpoint tags were pretty low maintenance, and the door towers had minimal issues beyond the annual servicing and testing. Where there were problems was with the camera systems.

As they would slowly break down, we discovered that Checkpoint Systems was very limited on what they could do to repair them. Because most of the cameras had been bought at a discount, they were off brands with limited warranties.

The end result was that we spent more to replace the camera systems with authorized Checkpoint Systems products. Had we spent the money initially on the Checkpoint Security Systems, we would not have had to pay for the cameras and components twice.

Finding The Appropriate Text- Library Theft Prevention

As more Barnes and Noble stores are getting into college campus settings, they are replacing many of the bookstores that used to be run by the college or university. As such, they bring with them the wealth of knowledge to operate with financial efficiency, and their library theft prevention techniques and strategies.
Many campus- run bookstores simply had a hard time maintaining them financially. The lack of Checkpoint Systems created too much of a financial struggle to replace stolen textbooks and supplies. A larger retailer who has a system in place can deter a large amount of theft, making the store profitable and the college as well.
Textbooks currently can be as much as six or seven hundred dollars. Some students, who cannot afford their pricey class textbooks, have turned to the campus library as a resource. The problem is that libraries don’t typically loan out a textbook for an entire semester.
So what option do these students have?
Many of them turn to theft. Since libraries without any library theft detection system make for an easy target, students low on cash may turn to the library to steal their textbooks from. As more campus bookstores equip themselves with Checkpoint Systems, libraries become more vulnerable to student theft that normally would have occurred at the bookstore instead of at the library.

What Do Your Shoplifters Crave? –Retail Theft Prevention

For every retailer, high theft items differ based on availability and product groups offered. For some boutiques, expensive denim is highly sought after, while in some general merchandise stores, it could be baby formula or cosmetics. Therefore, retail theft prevention tactics vary based on what products shoplifters crave in your store.
As a generalization, Rutgers University criminologist Ronald V. Clarke came up with an acronym for what kinds of products are susceptible to theft. He uses “CRAVED” for any of the hot products that a shoplifter might be interested in stealing. That means they are- Concealable, Removable, Available, Valuable, Enjoyable and Disposable.
Once you determine which products in your store are “CRAVED” most, it will be easier to determine the best course of retail theft prevention to take. That could mean installing checkpoint systems or other anti shoplifting EAS systems. It could also include increased employee training and awareness. Immediate customer service can stop shoplifting by up to 65% based on no or little employee engagement with the suspect.
Regardless of any specific application it all comes down to what is “CRAVED” in your store. That understanding can make a significant impact on effectively reducing your in store shrink and other losses.

I Thought I Had It- Retail Theft Prevention

One of my managers came to me the other day because they thought they were loosing their mind. He kept having customers looking for a particular item, and when he would go to the selling shelf, he would find the entire row of product gone. Since he did a lot of the stocking himself, he knew that he had just filled the shelf recently. I knew immediately that we needed to amend our retail theft prevention.
Because my manager had come across this situation with several different products, I knew it was not just an isolated incident. We had a series of thefts that could turn into big losses for the store if we didn’t react quickly.
One of the nice things about our store’s retail theft prevention was that we used Checkpoint systems. They are easy to use and can be changed at a moments notice. We were seeing losses primarily in our beauty products. In order to stop shoplifting, we needed to find a product that could be applied to small packages.
After consulting with our rep from checkpoint systems, they were able to provide us with several plausible solutions to not only fit our problem, but our budget as well.

If Found, Please Return – Checkpoint Labels

For those that spend their careers focusing on retail theft prevention, they understand that shoplifting is as much about the products they take as it is about the end result of those products.
For many general merchandise businesses, health and beauty products are often a high theft item. To stop shoplifting, it is essential to understand why these items are taken.
These items can be taken for personal use. Because they are consumable items, meaning they are used up and then need to be repurchased, it is for economic reasons that they can be stolen.
However, if you are missing large quantities (in particular all at once) then you are probably looking at a resale situation. Shoplifters will steal an item, like toothpaste, and find a place to re sell them for profit. This can be a pawnshop, ebay, or another local Mom and Pop store looking for a better profit margin.
To stop shoplifting these items, think about using Checkpoint Systems products to assist you. Checkpoint labels are the perfect anti shoplifting tool.
Not only is the Checkpoint labels geared to be adhered to almost every box or package, they can be pre printed with your own message. Think about adding your store’s name, phone number and a message stating that this is an anti shoplifting label, if found for resale please call your store’s number.

First In Innovation- Stop Shoplifting

Alpha Security was the first anti shoplifting company to introduce a version of the Spider Wrap into usage for retail theft prevention. It worked so well, that variations of the Alpha Security Spider Wrap are used by over five hundred retailers- both small and large businesses alike.
Spider Wraps have become an industry standard for two primary reasons. The first is that their anti shoplifting devices are compatible with Checkpoint Systems. That means businesses do not have to reinvest in a completely different system just to use the high quality Alpha Security retail theft prevention.
The second reason why Alpha Security products are so widely used is due to the actual features of their products. Take the Alpha Spider Wrap for example: their expandable, 7-strand aircraft grade cables are able to protect a wide range of merchandise. Not only are they easy to apply and remove, but also they are also tough, secure and reusable.
A two-stage locking buckle is for the most secure fit around medium to large packaged goods. The slim cable features do not obstruct the customer’s view and allows maximum viewing of product graphics.
When you look to stop shoplifting, having a quality range of products, like those supplied by Alpha Security is priceless.

Trade You Later- Checkpoint Systems

A recent news story came out around a lady who decided to go into her local supermarket to shoplift. This woman walked over to the seafood section and quickly picked up several packages of lobster tails. She picked up so many packages that the total was over $80 dollars worth. Since she didn’t think to bring a bag with her, she used the next best thing- her pants. The store’s security team didn’t need to have sophisticated anti shoplifting devices, like Checkpoint Systems, to stop this very obvious crime from taking place.
The store security team watched as she stuffed her pants full of packages of lobster tails and then wobbled her way to the exit doors. Because her pants were so full, she was even more obvious as she tried to leave. Now, the store actually did use Checkpoint Systems for their cameras and also in the soaker pads inside the lobster tail’s packaging. If this shoplifter had been more discrete, the store would have had other avenues to recognize this theft.
When she was apprehended, she told police that she was going to trade the tails to a friend for either a buffet lunch or for some prescription drugs. Since it is hard to know someone’s motivation for stealing before they come in, it is best to have something like Checkpoint Systems in place to stop shoplifting.

How Much Is Not Enough? – Retail Theft Prevention

Many retailers have stopped wasting their time apprehending shoplifting incidents under twenty-five dollars. What they have found is that the time and money spent to apprehend and prosecute these low dollar cases does not outweigh the losses from the crime. So it makes sense, financially, to let those small-dollar shoplifting incidents go.
Unfortunately, when you have too many small dollar incidents, you still risk these losses adding up to a cumulatively large financial loss.
For the big box stores that are large enough and financially secure enough to absorb such losses, this is not a big deal. What about for the smaller retailer? How much can you effectively absorb before it is too big to handle?
You might want to focus on smaller dollar losses, so they do not become a bigger issue over time. It might make more sense to you to take care to these little things.
You have to take the time to evaluate your own financial situation to determine how much is still not enough to prosecute? Maybe your store can set a limit at ten dollars; maybe you don’t want to waste your resources unless the crime is over fifty dollars.
Whatever the mark is, understanding both the short term and the long term valuations will determine what makes sense to you.
