Retail theft prevention for Grocery Stores.

If you work in the grocery business you know that theft is a real part of everyday life.  When I first started working Loss Prevention in this retail setting I was blown away at the amount of theft that occurs.  To that end it is important to use anti shoplifting devices, such as Checkpoint security tags, in an effort to prevent theft.  True retail theft prevention is about deterring theft as opposed to reacting to it.  This is even more important in a grocery store.

Consider this.  If a shoplifter steals a shirt by stuffing it in the front of their pants and pulling their jacket closed; you can still sell the shirt when you make the apprehension.  Now, imagine that same shoplifter shoving a pack of steaks down his pants.  Even if you make the apprehension you can’t in good conscience sell that product.  You have to throw it away which creates shrink even though you caught the bad guy.  Additionally, most grocers don’t have full time LP in every store.  The store personnel are responsible for the retail theft prevention on top of their other responsibilities (which are amazingly numerous).

To that end we have to help them by providing anti shoplifting tools.  The Checkpoint security system is a top notch system.  There are a variety of Checkpoint security tags that can be placed on many different types of merchandise.  I use labels on my boxed products.  They are also useful on cans of formula and other odd shaped items as they easily conform to the package.  Additionally, items like EAS soaker pads can be used for high end meat and seafood.  Checkpoint systems are also recognized by shoplifters.  They are much more likely to steal from a store that doesn’t have a Checkpoint security system than they are from you.

Dream of Better Profits with Checkpoint Systems

You are a business owner living the American dream, operating a profitable business. You are not one to let shoplifting stand in the way of good profits and common business sense. You want to do what you can to protect your merchandise. This American dream can only be a reality if retail theft prevention is an important part of your business plans.

An option for anti shoplifting strategies in your business is a Checkpoint security system. Checkpoint security tags can be attached to your high theft merchandise, allowing for you to display it prominently, increasing visibility and sales. Merchandise displayed out in the open, as opposed to merchandise that is secured in locked cases, can experience higher sales. Customers do not have to wait for a sales associate to unlock the merchandise and the customer also does not feel pressure to make a decision about the product they are looking at.

Checkpoint security tags also are a visual deterrent to the shoplifter, telling them that you do have some knowledge about retail theft prevention. Shoplifters do not want to have to take the time to figure out how to get around your anti theft devices. It is easier to move on to an unprotected business.

We often feel as if the shoplifters are one step ahead of us. It is frustrating to see the various methods that thieves use to rip off our businesses. Minimal investment in retail theft prevention, such as Checkpoint systems, can put you as the business owner a significant step ahead of the losses that you previously experienced. You do not have to let that dream of profitability die.

Checkpoint Security Tags…The Secret Weapon

A lot has been written about anti shoplifting devices like the Checkpoint security system. But the most versatile tools in the war are Checkpoint security tags. Checkpoint security tags work with your Checkpoint security system in a retail theft prevention aspect.

Unlike acousto magnetic labels, which are about the size, shape and thickness of a piece of “chicklet” gum the Checkpoint labels are paper-thin making the versatile in that they can either be easily hidden inside packaging or placed obviously on the outside as an altogether deterrent.

They come in so many varieties that it is hard to keep up with them. Checkpoint security tags can be white, black, clear which allows a packages barcode to show through. They can be printed on with your own printed with barcodes, logos, pricing information and more. You can also stick your own label over the top of them.

As far as size, Checkpoint labels have a wide range of sizes. This ranges from the postage stamp size to a 1.5” x 1.5” size. And there are many in between. For example the very popular 710 label is 1.3” x 1.4”. There are two sizes of round labels and they fit very well on the bottom of bottles such as medicines. They also work very well on the bottom of small square boxes. The round shape means that the corners of a label do not hang over the edges.

Another great series of Checkpoint security tags is the 615. The 615-barcode label has not only a fake barcode but also a small box printed on it that allows another sticker to be applied such as a logo or price tag. This all goes to hiding the intent of the Checkpoint labels.

And, of course, in the arsenal of retail anti shoplifting devices is the Checkpoint systems themselves. Checkpoint Systems latest tool is the Evolve system. As anti shoplifting goes this is the top of the pile. Evolve has so many features packed into it I will need to write a separate blog for that. But for now consider the following Evolve features: superior detection with new revolutionary electronics, people counting, alarm detection that can tell if a customer is entering or leaving the store.

Simple Theft Prevention with Checkpoint Systems

Retail theft prevention can be a complicated endeavor. Those of us that work retail know that shoplifting costs businesses millions of dollars a year. It seems that the thieves are often one step ahead of our efforts to reduce the impact shoplifting can have on our business. Businesses do, however, have options in anti shoplifting that can provide real results. You as a business owner do not have to sit idle and not react to the loss of your merchandise due to shoplifting.

Checkpoint systems are an option available to businesses that are interested in anti shoplifting devices. Checkpoint security tags are attached to your high theft merchandise and sound an alarm if they get too close to your entrances and exits. The tags are nearly impossible for thieves to remove, which is an additional deterrent for the would-be shoplifter. For the business owner, Checkpoint security tags are removed with a key by employees at the time of purchase, and can then be reused on other merchandise. Better in stock of merchandise is an additional benefit of anti shoplifting devices.

A business owner cannot expect to be in business long without taking retail theft prevention into consideration. Burying our heads in the sand and hoping all the shoplifting will go away will only allow the loss to continue. Developing an anti shoplifting program for your business is the best way to slow down the loss of merchandise and profit. A Checkpoint security system can help out with that.

Retail theft prevention does not have to be a scary concept. Checkpoint security tags can prevent additional lost profit for your business by protecting the merchandise responsible for your profitability. A minimal investment in your business’s future is an investment that is worthwhile.

Anti shoplifting devices a necessity in today’s economy.

If you work in retail you know that business in many areas is starting to pick back up, but you know that theft is also still on the rise.  The fact is, many are still unemployed or have had to take pay cuts or reduced roles in order to survive.  This means that there are a lot of people in need and many who still want to live the same lifestyle they always have.  For us, that means we have to protect our profits more than ever in order to keep our companies protected as well as our employees jobs.

To do this we rely heavily on anti shoplifting devices as a major form of retail theft prevention.  I like Checkpoint systems as my provider for anti shoplifting devices.  There are several components to utilize.  First are Checkpoint security tags that can be placed on any product in order to add protection.  There are a variety of Checkpoint security tags that can be used.  There are varying sizes of hard tags as well as soft tags for boxed products and packages.

Secondly, you need the Checkpoint security system.  The tags won’t do much good without the Checkpoint security system to sound the alert when product is leaving with tags attached.  This system has pedestals at the doors and when a tagged item passes through the pedestals read the RF signature in the sensor tag and set off an alarm which alerts your employees.

The final component to the Checkpoint systems is the employees themselves.  They have to be trained on how to routinely test the equipment to ensure functionality.  They also have to be trained on how to respond properly to the activation of the Checkpoint security system in order to ensure customer service and retail theft prevention.

Retail theft PREVENTION is the goal.

For as long as retail anti shoplifting devices have been around, I am still surprised by the number of times I hear people say they expect to use Checkpoint security tags to catch shoplifters.  For those who may have that mindset, let me share some thoughts with you.  The goal of Checkpoint systems and in particular Checkpoint security tags is retail theft prevention.  Not to “catch” shoplifters.

One of the key principles I have learned in business is that it is much better to be proactive than reactive.  To this end we use anti shoplifting devices in hopes of deterring theft.  I often joke when teaching new hire orientation classes that you will never see a sensor tag throw a suspect to the ground.  You will never see a sensor tag put handcuffs on anyone and you will never see it take someone to jail.  The reason is that is not its intended purpose.

Shoplifters, amateur to professional, know about Checkpoint systems.  When they see the anti shoplifting devices on your product they expect the Checkpoint security system at the door to alarm if they try to steal product.  Our job is to make sure that when the Checkpoint security system does sound that we react.  Now I caution everyone about reacting with the assumption of theft.  Most false alarms are due to cashiers not removing a tag on a purchase as opposed to theft.  With that said, we need to show would be shoplifters that we are going to stop them and require a receipt or investigate to find out what caused the alarm.  This is where the prevention comes in.

Make sure to train your associates how to properly respond to the activations as this is what retail theft prevention should look like.

Don’t let your profits walk out the door.

I used to work for a company that sold footwear in addition to many other clothing items.  Surprisingly to me, the footwear was the most commonly stolen item and the hardest to catch.  I soon learned how important the anti shoplifting devices by Checkpoint systems were to literally preventing my products from walking out.

The main way I found that footwear was stolen was simple.  The shoplifter leaves their old nasty shoes in the box and walks out the door with the new shoes on.  Even though it seems obvious, it really is not.  You expect to see a shoplifter with a big bag or trying to somehow conceal product.  The truth is it can be easiest to miss the bold approach right in front of you as it is unexpected.

We started to use the Checkpoint security tags from Checkpoint systems.  These work with the checkpoint security system door alarms to sound an alarm if “live” tags go out the door without being deactivated.  This is great because we would put “soft” Checkpoint security tags under the insole of the footwear.  Customers did not know the items were being protected by anti shoplifting devices.  The shoplifters would trade shoes and then the Checkpoint security system alarm going off at the door was a dead giveaway of just what they were doing.

This served two main purposes.  First, it allowed us to identify the theft and react.  Secondly, it provided retail theft prevention.  Prevention is the key.  Once word got around (and it did quickly) that we were using Checkpoint security tags on footwear the theft and shrink in that department dropped dramatically.  The ultimate goal for anti shoplifting devices is the retail theft prevention aspect and Checkpoint systems makes that happen.

Anti-Shoplifting Devices: Saving You Profits and Making Customers Feel Safe

Shoplifting can put a major dent in your bottom line and these days many stores are turning to anti-shoplifting devices like EAS (electronic article surveillance) to help them safeguard their profits by deterring theft and boosting associate awareness.

Retail theft prevention devices such as EAS pedestals can also provide a visual deterrent against theft, sending folks that want to steal other, less well protected stores. As an added bonus, knowing you are scaring off the criminal element gives your customers a greater feeling of personal safety and security.

Where I currently work, we use a Checkpoint security system, which consists of Checkpoint security tags, deactivation pads at the point of sale, and EAS pedestals by the doors that alarm if someone tries to carry out our merchandise. As a loss prevention associate for a major retailer, I use anti-shoplifting devices regularly in my work to guard against major theft incidents like organized retail crime, where professional thieves come in and simply walk out the door with our high ticket items. The great thing about EAS systems, specifically Checkpoint security tags like the soft EAS tags, however, is they can also be used to target specific merchandise that seems to come up missing more often, which sometimes changes from season to season.

For instance, although theft of electronics, alcohol and fragrances might be high all the time and I might always have those products tagged with hard tags or Alpha spider wraps, the soft tags that are used with Checkpoint systems let me tag things that might be new that I think might be stolen or that are a new trend, like swimwear, drink mixes or baby formula, without investing in additional hard tags. The flexibility that I get from using retail theft prevention devices like soft EAS tags helps me more closely monitor my theft trends, keeps the criminals out of my building and helps safeguard my company’s bottom line.

You Are Not an Easy Target with Checkpoint Systems

Shoplifters that steal for resale are looking for that easy target; that business that allows the opportunity for shoplifting to occur. Without the opportunity, there cannot be successful shoplifting theft, so reducing that opportunity is a primary factor in retail theft prevention.

Anti shoplifting techniques also have to provide the shoplifter with attention that he or she does not want. Shoplifters not only have to have the opportunity to steal from your business – they have to go unnoticed when they steal your merchandise. So giving customers attention by providing good customer service can go far in reducing theft.

There are tools available to use in your anti shoplifting crusade for your business. Checkpoint Security system has tags that affix to your high theft merchandise that can be a deterrent to the potential shoplifter. Checkpoint security tags are easily attached but hard to remove by a shoplifter. When the item is purchased, the tags are easily removed with a key by your employees. Checkpoint security tags can then be reused on other high theft and high ticket merchandise that you wish to display.

Organized retail crime, which includes shoplifters stealing for resale of your merchandise, can be hard to combat. These groups are often familiar with anti shoplifting techniques and other methods of retail theft prevention. However, these groups know that businesses with Checkpoint Security tags can be difficult to steal from, and Checkpoint systems can be enough of a deterrent to send the shoplifters on to the next business. Protecting your business and its assets with anti shoplifting devices is the best way to maximize profits while sending a message – that you are serious about retail theft prevention. Don’t be that easy target that the organized shoplifters want to frequent.

A checkpoint security system can monitor your assets when you’re not always able to.  Who better to watch your property than the latest Checkpoint Security system equipment? Even if thieves think they can get around the equipment you can use the Checkpoint System CCTV program as evidence when filing a theft or burglary report.

I once worked for a company that had an outstanding checkpoint security system alarm and CCTV system. My loss prevention department had received word that our early morning cleaning crew were possibly stealing. We did some review of video tape and found that they were emptying a mop bucket quite often outside. This was alarming to us because they had an in store sink for dumping water. We set up a time to come in and actually monitor their every move from all our cameras. Come to find out they were loading up the mop buckets with merchandise then taking them outside to their cars. The items they took did not have checkpoint security tags or sensors. They avoided the high dollar items because without a special tool they could not remove the sensors.

Checkpoint security tags are a great deterrent.  Who knows what they had already taken out?  Retail theft prevention and checkpoint systems will keep your customers and employees from receiving that 100% discount.
